prohibition

The Anti-Saloon League, founded in 1893, led the state prohibition drives of 1906–13. During World War I a temporary Wartime Prohibition Act was passed to save grain for use as food. By January 1920 prohibition was already in effect in 33 states covering 63 percent of the total population. In 1917 the resolution for submission of the Prohibition Amendment to the states received the necessary two-thirds vote in Congress; the amendment was ratified on Jan. 29, 1919, and went into effect on Jan. 29, 1920. On Oct. 28, 1919, the National Prohibition Act, popularly known as the Volstead Act (after its promoter, Congressman Andrew J. Volstead), was enacted, providing enforcement guidelines.

Spread of radioactive particles is 'out of control'

Further earthquakes could worsen problems at the Fukushima plant

Total radiation released 'could exceed Chernobyl', officials admit

Magnitude 6.3 aftershock hit this morning, biggest since March 11 disaster

Fires continue to break out at the tsunami-devastated nuclear power plant ahead of the crisis level being raised to 7 with one raging in a building close to one of the reactors.

As workers continue to battle in vain to bring the situation under control at the Fukushima plant, a blaze was discovered in a room filled with batteries close to No 4 unit.

Japanese officials admitted today that the spread of radiation from its crippled nuclear plant was out of control and that the government had raised the crisis level to the worst on the international scale.

Palin decries 'Dumpster divers' at Calif. campus

By GARANCE BURKE

ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

TURLOCK, Calif. -- Sarah Palin leveled criticism at California's attorney general and others raising questions about her visit to a cash-strapped university, telling supporters that students had better things to do than dive through Dumpsters to find out how much she earns speaking.

The material recovered by the students, which detailed perks such as first-class airfare for two and deluxe hotel accommodations, prompted California Attorney General Jerry Brown to launch an investigation into the finances of the university's foundation arm and allegations that the nonprofit violated public disclosure laws.

"Jerry Brown and friends, come on. This is California," Palin retorted. "Do you not have anything else to do?"

Palin finishes memoir, 'Going Rogue,' out Nov. 17

By HILLEL ITALIE

AP National Writer

NEW YORK —

That was fast.

Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate, has finished her memoir just four months after the book deal was announced, and the release date has been moved up from the spring to Nov. 17, her publisher said.

"Governor Palin has been unbelievably conscientious and hands-on at every stage, investing herself deeply and passionately in this project," said Jonathan Burnham, publisher of Harper. "It's her words, her life, and it's all there in full and fascinating detail."
