Microsoft Trial -- Microsoft Takes Aim At Accuser From Intel -- Defense Says Witness Is Disgruntled Employee

WASHINGTON - Microsoft trained its legal guns on an Intel executive today and attempted to show that he was a disgruntled employee whose inflammatory accusations are discounted by internal documents and by the sworn testimony of his boss.
But McGeady stuck to his testimony that Microsoft, through a series of threats, had snuffed out Intel's effort to develop software that Microsoft opposed. That's why Intel kept the whole program secret from Microsoft initially, he testified.
"The fear that kept us from telling Microsoft about it was the fear that was ultimately realized, the fear that Microsoft would stomp it out of existence," McGeady said.

WASHINGTON — Intel Corp. executive Steven McGeady, under cross-examination Tuesday in the Microsoft antitrust trial, acknowledged that Intel blundered when it developed multimedia technology for a soon-to-be-replaced version of Microsoft's Windows operating system. But he refused to yield on his contention that the technology was shelved because of Microsoft's threats.
A Microsoft lawyer spent the afternoon attacking McGeady as a poorly-informed malcontent in an attempt to undo his testimony that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates threatened to withhold vital support for Intel microprocessors unless Intel ceased development of multimedia software known as native signal processing, or NSP.
The thrust of McGeady's testimony was that even Intel, which shares dominance of the personal computer world with Microsoft, was not immune from bullying when Microsoft perceived incursions on its turf--any software connected to Windows.
McGeady's testimony is considered especially significant because unlike other government witnesses to date, he represents not a competitor, but a Microsoft partner--and one of the high-tech world's most powerful forces. Intel microprocessors are the brains of more than 80 percent of the world's desktop computers, and like Microsoft, the company is being sued by federal regulators for abuse of its market power.
McGeady testified that consumers were hurt by Intel's decision to sideline NSP because it delayed the availability of software that improved the clarity of pictures and sound delivered over the Internet on Windows-based computers.
He also said Microsoft would have damaged the openness of the Internet by adding proprietary elements, called extensions, to the basic language of Web pages, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
His notes of a November 1995 meeting quote a Microsoft official as saying the company planned to "kill HTML by extending it."

And now, to top off our most propane-explosion-free science week ever, our grand finale: the launching of a weather balloon!
The children cheer. Bart's voice can be heard over the top.
BART
Go, weather balloon! Hurrah for science, woo!
SKINNER
(quietly) "Hurrah for science, woo"? I can't say I approve of the "woo" but the "hurrah" was quite heartening. (louder) Release the balloon!
Groundskeeper Willy releases the balloon as the kids cheer. As the balloon rises, Bart can be seen holding a piece of string. It is connected to the balloon, and he pulls it sharply. Two flaps on the balloon unroll, revealing a picture of Skinner's head on one side and his legs on the other. A banner on the balloon reads "Hi, I'm Big Butt Skinner". The kids laugh.
SKINNER
Nooooo!!!
Skinner runs after the balloon.
BART
I don't think I really captured the eyes.
MILHOUSE
Bart, if you have a failing, it's that you're always demanding perfection. If you have a failing.
SKINNER
Whoever brings down that balloon doesn't have to learn fractions!
The children cheer and start throwing rocks. Many land on Skinner's car, which is beneath the balloon.

He shoots a gun into the sky several times, as two fighter planes fly past.

A screen flashes "Iraqi Fighter Jet".
PILOT ONE
Iraqis again. Launching sidewinder missile. (A missile is launched and destroys the other plane.) Missed 'em. Launching second sidewinder missile. (The missile destroys his plane, and both pilots parachute.) (to the other pilot) This is what happens when you cut money out of the military and put it into health care!
PILOT TWO
It's a good program! Just give it a chance, that's all I ask!
Suddenly, the parachutes rip, and both pilots fall to the ground. They get straight up and start punching each other. Back at the school, Skinner watches the balloon float off.

Plot Summary
In the winter of 1868, Eben Frost goes to a Boston pawnshop and redeems a silver medal, inscribed to "Dr. W.T.G. Morton, the Benefactor of Mankind, with the Gratitude of Humanity." Frost drives to a country farmhouse and gives the medal to Morton's widow, Elizabeth Morton who explains to her daughter, Betty, that Frost was the first person given anesthesia by her father, Boston dentist Dr. W.T.G. Morton. The story flashes back 20 years to find Morton being wildly acclaimed by medical students as the man whose discovery of "letheon" had forever ended pain as, before that day, even amputations were performed with the patient fully conscious. "Letheron", unknown to everybody but Morton and Elizabeth, is simply highly rectified sulfuric ether - cleaning fluid - easily obtainable at a pharmacy. By keeping the secret, Dr. Morton could be rich, but he had rather be poor than see a girl strapped to an operating table under the knife of Dr. Warren, and he reveals his secret to a group of surgeons in the hospital operating theatre. With his secret out, and all hope of personal reward gone, with the possible exception of proceeds from his glass inhaler, he gets the news that Congress has voted him a reward of $100,000, and also learns that the patent on his inhaler has been infringed. President Pierce, under pressure from newspapers inflamed by jealous medical rivals of Morton, refuses to sign the bill until Morton has proven patient infringement.

So I started reviewing other details from my environment there at Microsoft and I was stunned to understand what they were doing. There was the woman who worked closely to me named Ramona, which reminds me of Ilan Ramon, the Israeli pilot who flew one of the F-16's on the Osirak strike in 1981 and who was lost in Columbia on 2/1/2003. There was Tom Devey, who worked on a team where I was the technical lead, that also included Ramona, who had a remarkable resemblance to Ilan Ramon. I remember after the 9/11 attacks, Tom Devey came over to my desk to ask me if I was going to the Professional Developers Conference that was coming up, that next February I think, and I puzzled over why he seemed nervous when I told him I was flying down there too.

As I was riding the bus to the VA, I remembered something else that happened at Microsoft. I was complaining to a friend one day about how Sharon Bjeletich had put a curtain up at the entrance to her cube so no one could see in. That was the second cube I sat in after moving to that new floor in the Bellevue office. Sharon sat two cubicles from me. Eddy Hahn was in the cube between us. I believe that Sharon put that curtain up because she, and everyone else, knew that there were cameras outside the building staring in at me and she was being captured in the frame. I am certain that happened in 2000 because I remember something from Halloween when I was still on that floor and by Halloween of 2001, we were all out at Issaquah. Halloween of 1999, I was still a TAM and I remember another TAM dressed up as a hockey player and he asked me if I was trying to work. Eddy is that guy I wrote about that worked in Las Vegas before Microsoft. He is from Budapest. I can't remember where Sharon was from originally but she is the one I wrote about that reminds me of Sarajevo. Eddy has one of those masks from that movie....can't remember the name now. Wasn't it something similar to "I Know What You Did Last Summer."? That movie came up one time when I was still a TAM. Something with Wally Simpson. I was leaving notes around his desk with that phrase on it. He said his son found the one I left in his closed laptop.
