Renton

You know, some person literally broke in to my apartment one day when I was gone and they reset the alarm clock next to my bed. I heard it go off just a few seconds before a new "Hawaii Five-O" episode premiered recently.

Then you got the jerk who is constantly hacking up snot out in the parking lot day and night. Day and night I have to listen to that jerk coughing up his lungs. Hard to be sympathetic towards a legitimate medical condition when I look out my window and see him out there again hacking up his lungs and puffing on a cigarette. Disgusting moron. Day and night. They must have deliberately put him downstairs for no reason other than to piss me off.

And the incredible stupid goddamned morons and their stupid goddamned yap dog. Anybody walking by on this sidewalk and that little goddamned vermin starts yapping. Stupid damn people.

I probably became a military lawyer in 1992. That may be why a U.S. Navy Commander with the JAG symbol on his shoulder boards passed me on the sidewalk a while back. That was somewhere around 5th and Pike I think. I was walking to that VA medical assessment with the doctor on Olive Way, which was on April 27, 2006.

Back in the summer of 2005, after I became homeless, I wandered around for a while as I have written. I was exhausted at went again to the police, this time the Redmond police for help. They didn’t ask me any substantive questions and instead took me to Overlake hospital. I remember a doctor made a confusing remark about how he didn’t know I was now homeless. I wondered what that meant but it was consistent with my suspicions that people knew who I was everywhere I had been going for all those years. From there they transferred me somewhere, it may have been Harborview. They didn’t have room so they transferred me to the mental health unit of UW Medical Center. I was there for about four days I think before they transferred me to the VA in Seattle. One of those days at UW, a woman I don’t think I saw before or again in there organized a group activity where we made drawing with colored pencils. The instructions were to draw anything we wanted to draw. I drew a diagram of our solar system. I told her after I finished it that I should have made it larger because it was too small to show the detail I wanted. I was trying to illustrate how one side of the planets was brighter because it was facing the Sun.

I wrote recently about those two service-connected disability claim assessments were on 4/27 and 5/4, which seem important. Also, as I noticed yesterday, the first one was at 509 Olive Way and it was near that address where I passed the USN Commander with JAG shoulder boards. The doctor was named “Raney”

I must have been trying to determine the date the clock stopped, by using the date I had earlier calculated was the graduation date. I don't know when I started thinking it was 4/27 though as I had earlier written that it was 4/26, so I don't know why I chose 4/27. Maybe it was because of something I wrote about earlier. I got a letter dated 4/14/06 about those two VA medical assessments. The first appointment was for 4/27 and the second was 5/4. At some point I decided those were the dates I graduated and that the Sheffield was hit with me on it. Later I would realize that those two dates are exactly one week apart, on Fridays. That first appointment, though, was at 509 Olive and the doctor was named Raney. 509 and Ray-nee. 4/27/82 was a Tuesday, I would later realize, and that also puzzled me as to whether that was the actual graduation date.

Joseph McConnell , Jr.

Date of birth: 30-Jan-22

Date of death: 25-Aug-54

Burial location: Victorville, CA

Place of Birth: New Hampshire, Dover

Home of record: Apple Valley California

Status: DNB

During WWII Joseph McConnell attempted to become a pilot, but wound up flying as a navigator in a B-17. At age 28 when war broke out in Korea, he was thought too old to be a fighter pilot, but persisted until he was in the cockpit of an F-86. His 16 aerial victories made him the leading American Ace of the Korean War. His celebrity status prompted production of a movie titled "The McConnell Story," starring Alan Ladd, and June Allyson. Captain McConnell never saw the finished product. He was killed on August 24, 1954 at Edwards AFB while acceptance testing an F-86H. He remains the highest-scoring American jet ace in history. .

AWARDS AND CITATIONS

Distinguished Service Cross

Awarded for actions during the Korean War

The President of the United States of America, under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain Joseph McConnell, Jr., United States Air Force, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy of the United Nations while serving as a Pilot with the 39th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter-Interceptor Wing, FIFTH Air Force, in action against enemy forces in the Republic of Korea on 18 May 1953. Leading two F-86s on an air superiority mission over North Korea, he sighted a formation of twenty-eight MIG-15 type aircraft. Determined to accomplish his mission and with complete disregard for the numerical odds against him, he immediately attacked. Although under fire himself, he pressed his attack to such extent that he completely disorganized the enemy formation, destroying one of the MIGs and damaging another. Several enemy aircraft were then firing at him but, seeing that the other Sabre in his flight was also being fired upon, he completely ignored enemy cannon fire directed at himself and destroyed the MIG that was pursuing his wingman. These victories, in spite of counterattacks by such superior numbers, completely unnerved the enemy to the extent that they withdrew across the Yalu before further attacks could be made. Through his courage, keen flying ability and devotion to duty, Captain McConnell reflected great credit upon himself, the Far East Air Forces, and the Untied States Air Force.

Judge scolds UW for e-mail on lawsuit

A King County Superior Court judge has rebuked the University of Washington administration for sending an unauthorized e-mail about a class-action lawsuit involving back pay for 3,000-plus faculty.

In an October partial summary judgment, Judge Mary Yu ruled that the UW breached its duty by not awarding most faculty a 2 percent merit increase in the 2002-03 academic year. The ruling could cost the UW up to $16 million.

On Nov. 30, UW President Mark Emmert sent a facultywide e-mail to "offer as much clarification as possible" about the lawsuit. But Monday, Yu ordered the UW to send a corrective e-mail and refrain from further unauthorized communication.

Yu said the court is concerned about Emmert's e-mail because it was sent to class-action members without notice to counsel; it discussed the alleged budgetary impact to the UW, "which on its face appears to be an attempt to influence class members regarding their participation"; and it didn't include contact information for class-action counsel.

Bail was set at $1 million Tuesday for a man accused of shooting a Renton police officer.

Officer Larry Strauss was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center on Tuesday. Police say Strauss, 49, and a 20-year veteran of the force, was shot in the neck Sunday evening as he approached four people getting into a van at a strip-mall parking lot near the Renton Municipal Airport.

The 48-year-old suspect is not being identified because he hasn't been charged.

Inmate sentenced for 1990 murder

A man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing of a Seattle mother was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.

Trenino Rollins, who is already in prison serving a sentence for another murder, will begin serving his time when his current sentence is complete — in about six years.

Rollins was convicted of stabbing 38-year-old Betty Elaine Minnis more than 30 times with a pair of scissors in 1990. It wasn't until DNA evidence surfaced that detectives identified Rollins as a suspect.

Rollins' first trial for the crime ended in a mistrial in April. The hung jury was split 10-2 in favor of conviction.

A new trial was scheduled to start in October, but Rollins agreed to a deal that reduced the original first-degree-murder charge to second-degree murder.

The standard sentence range was 13 to 21 years.

Man who shot officer sentenced

A man convicted of attempted first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm for shooting Renton Police Officer Larry Strauss was sentenced Friday to 50 years in prison.

Wilford Armstead received the high end of the sentencing range for the charge, plus additional time for a firearm enhancement and an exceptional sentence. He also had 27 previous felonies, which accounts for the severe sentence.

On Jan. 8, Strauss tried to stop three jaywalkers near downtown Renton. One of them, Armstead, bolted and fired at the officer.

Strauss, who was shot in the neck, does not remember the shooting and has been unable to return to police work.

Kerry Wayne Burgess

Kerry Wayne Burgess, born November 2, 1965, in Antlers, OK, is an alias for the covert U.S. military operative Thomas Allyn Ray. The secret identity of Burgess was exposed several years ago by employees of Microsoft while Burgess was an employee. The purpose of the exposure was to improve investor and customer confidence in Microsoft, a notable defense contractor for the U.S. military.

To cover up Microsoft's past acts of treason against the United States, Microsoft has been trying to get Kerry Burgess killed. Kerry Burgess only recently started to regain his knowledge of his covert status. Burgess's primary objective was to live as the test subject of a PTSD treatment program, which as part of the treatment, resulted in his complete loss of memory about his life as Thomas Allyn Ray.

Thomas Allyn Ray is a 1982 graduate of the United States Navy Academy. Prior to graduation, according to information available to this author, Ray participated in the April 1980 rescue attempt of the 53 hostages from the U.S. embassy in Tehran. Microsoft demonstrated knowledge of his participation in that event when they offered employment to Kerry Burgess and gave him a starting salary of $53,000. Kerry Burgess became a full time employee with Microsoft on December 7, 1998.

Microsoft further demonstrated knowledge of Thomas Ray's covert activities when they announced a 2:1 split of Microsoft stock which became effective on 2/14/03. Kerry Burgess held 2000 stock options at that time and the split gave him another 2000 for a total of 4000 options. As witnessed by this author, employees were incredulous that Microsoft was splitting the stock at that time. This author recently made the connection to this stock split and the events described in Rodger Claire's "Raid On The Sun."

"Raid On The Sun" describes the pre-emptive strike by the Israeli Air Force against the non-fueled Osirak nuclear reactor outside Baghdad. The strike occurred on 6/7/81 and was timed to prevent radiation from injuring the nearby Iraqi civilian population. As Claire describes in his book, the F-16s were carrying two-2000 pound bombs under each wing. Before Kerry Burgess quit in protest of management misconduct at Microsoft, he was receiving two paychecks each month that were slightly above $2000. In the book "Raid On The Sun," there are several photos of people associated with the strike. Many of those photos are credited to a company named Corbis. Corbis was founded is an interest of Bill Gates, who also is known to control Microsoft.

A few months before the Feb. 2003 stock split, Kerry was in a performance review meeting with his manager, Kirk Tavener. Tavener, known to fancy himself as resembling Kevin Costner, had been Kerry's manager at Microsoft since 2000. During the performance review meeting, Kerry explained his accomplishments during that review cycle and present his case for an increase in salary and employee stock options. Tavener's immediate response was to show Kerry a pornographic video, The video, titled "Priceless," featured a male asking for sexual favors and promised to return the favor. Kerry complained to Tavener's manager and his manager documented the incident in email.

This author also believes that Thomas Ray, also known as Kerry Burgess, was present as a covert third crewperson on several flights of the space shuttle. The most notable flight, according to current information, was the first flight of April 12 to 14, in the year 1981. During that flight, there was a problem with the landing gear of the shuttle. Ray corrected the problem but he was thrown out of the shuttle when the gear went down prior to landing. It is unclear from current information how he survived the fall but the author assumes he deployed a parachute. This author recently connected this incident with a news article in October 2004. In the article, Karl Rove, presidential adviser to George W. Bush, stepped away from the president's side as they were boarding Air Force One and was photographed sitting down in front of the landing gear of the aircraft. The author is unsure of the message that Rove was sending but it is probable the message is related to Ray's incident on the Columbia with the landing gear on the first shuttle flight.

Twice-shot Renton officer slowly creates a new life

By Jennifer Sullivan

Seattle Times staff reporter

Larry Strauss misses many things about police work: the camaraderie, the adrenaline rush of 911 calls and catching bad guys.

But he's worried about being a target.

Few would argue with Strauss, who is believed to be the only police officer in Washington state history to have been shot in two different incidents.

That he is still alive and in relatively good health explains why he, on many levels, feels fortunate. But after the second shooting left Strauss physically unable to continue his career with the Renton Police Department, Strauss, 50, finds himself puttering around his home, researching new careers and planning his retirement.

"Am I lucky or am I unlucky? I would have preferred [retirement] to be on my own terms," said Strauss, who has been on the force 21 years. "I couldn't go back to police work; it's just too realistic to me to be a target."

In March 1991, Strauss was shot after he responded to a real-estate office where a man was threatening employees with a gun. Donald Venefra was apparently angry with his estranged wife for not paying their mortgage on time.

A struggle between the two men ended with both firing gunshots. Venefra's shot lodged in Strauss' bulletproof vest, bruising his chest.

Venefra, who also was shot in the chest, survived and was later convicted of second-degree attempted murder. He was released from prison in March 1998.

As a result of his actions that night, Strauss became the first Renton police officer to be awarded the city's Medal of Valor.

A second shot

Strauss figured that would be all the gunfire he'd ever see. He agreed when people called him lucky, and even joked about taking his good fortune to Las Vegas.

But on Jan. 8, 2006, Strauss stopped three jaywalkers who had crossed seven lanes of traffic. He asked the first for his name and then turned to another of the jaywalkers, Wilford Armstead, who instead bolted and jumped into a nearby van.

Armstead, who had 27 prior felonies, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in an assault case.

Strauss later testified that he didn't remember much about what happened next. He saw Armstead reach into his coat as if he were about to pull out a weapon and then everything went black.

Armstead fired at Strauss' head four times, police say. One bullet barely missed his bulletproof vest and burrowed into his neck, leaving him with a broken collarbone, a punctured lung, a broken rib and a collapsed trachea.

In December, Armstead was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Doctors told Strauss that he was only a few centimeters from being killed. Strauss felt like the "unluckiest lucky man" alive.

Once able to run 20 miles a week, Strauss was forced to use a wheelchair immediately after the shooting. Though he gradually was able to hobble, walk and eventually run short distances, Strauss said the shooting left him forgetful.

Although the muscular 50-year-old looks healthy, he said the post-traumatic stress caused by the shooting is forcing him to retire. Strauss has been receiving disability pay from the department and will receive a pension after he retires.

An uncertain future

But as Strauss meets with state Department of Labor and Industries career counselors to decided what his future will hold — possibly a job as a photographer, an electrician, a computer programmer or an auto-body specialist — he spends most of his days puttering around the house, wishing he could be still be a cop, but not be in harm's way.

He knows, however, that isn't possible.

"I miss the fun, the camaraderie, handling the [911] calls and the challenges," Strauss said. "I have challenges at home; they're less meaningful. I've been trying to repair the lawnmower."

Strauss said while at home, he keeps a close eye on his 14-year-old son and does chores while his wife, Rema, goes to work.

Rema Strauss knows well the dangers associated with being a police officer. A 911 dispatcher, she handled the emergency call when her husband was shot last January.

"I didn't know he was shot; officers often hit their emergency button," she said. "There's nothing you can do, just handle the call."

Now, she is looking forward to her husband's new life.

"He gets to relax and enjoy life. He gets to have coffee with friends and find something new and fun to do," she said. "I don't have to worry about him anymore."

Another honor

A few weeks ago, Strauss was awarded his second Medal of Valor from the city of Renton for his actions on Jan. 8, 2006. He remains the only person to receive the honor.

Friday, he will be one of six officers to receive the state's law-enforcement Medal of Honor.

Strauss and State Patrol Trooper Kelly Kalmbach, who survived being shot last summer, will receive the award from Gov. Christine Gregoire in Olympia.

Joe Don Baker ... Chief Earl Eischied

This two-hour episode, actually Parts 1 and 2 of three (in the NBC reruns, they were shown as two 90-minute episodes; in syndication, they are three one-hour episodes), is a close retelling of the Son of Sam case, with Albert Colvin (James Stephens) as a serial killer who hunts down and shoots beautiful women while taunting reporters by phone. 9. King Nicholas of Montenegro issues proclamation calling upon all Montenegrins to join in "holy war"

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: August 31, 2006

I've been thinking for a while that the dreams I have are literal. They are the foreign dreams I used to write, the dreams produced by the manipulators of my thoughts. Don't know what to say about that last one. Jumbled, disturbing, painful. Somebody put in a lot of effort to make me forget those memories, if it is real. There was a scene there straight out the opening of "Saving Private Ryan" except that it seemed to be in the Middle East. And it was something like a pyramid I was running into, and I was by myself and every gun, there were countless guns, was turning towards me. It was sort of like a pyramid I was rushing onto, except that it was elogated, like a castle wall. In another scene, a two-star general or admiral was captured by the enemy. Back in the stretched-pyramid, I was fighting off an attack. Grenades were flying in on me, but I don't recall them going off. Then, I and some of my fellow soldiers seemed to be cleaning the place. A lot of other stuff that is fading from my mind. I feel sad, very sad.
