Press intrusion and Princess Diana
Before her death in September 1997, Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, following continuous media intrusion into her private life, confronted the British press in a vain plea for privacy for herself and her sons. Following the revelation of her friendship with Dodi Fayed, the son of the wealthy and controversial owner of Harrods, Mohammed Fayed, the press and photographers were anxious to photograph her on holiday in France with Dodi.
‘Exasperated at the attention bestowed on her family by journalists, she hopped from his yacht into a launch and made her way to a boat carrying reporters and photographers. Wearing a leopard-print swimsuit, she remonstrated for five minutes with representatives from the Daily Mail, the Mirror and the Sun, who had been training binoculars and camera lenses on her throughout her private holiday.’
Eralier in April 1997, Lady Diana described an incident in which a passer-by forced a freelance cameraman into an armlock so that she could confiscate his film as a ‘distressing intrusion’ into her private life. The incident was captured by another photographer, and displayed over three pages of the Sun newspaper. In response, the Princess issued a statement condemning the action of the photographer. The statement read:
‘Once again the Princess of Wales has been harassed by a photographer. Once again this has become the subject of inaccurate press comment. The Princess hopes that the recently passed Protection from Harassment Act will give greater protection to people such as herself who are victims of this kind of distressing intrusion into their private lives.’
The incident was the latest in a series of disputes between the Princess and photographers. Many freelance paparazzi (professional photographers who specialise in taking photographs of famous people and selling them to the media) refused to heed her pleas for privacy, believing that she was a fair target. Apart from being a public figure - the mother of the next King - she was known to have meetings with favoured journalists, leaving her open to accusations of manipulating the media for her own purposes and only copmplaining about publicity when it was not controlled be her.
Following her divorce from the Prince of Wales, the Princess appealed to the media several times to leave both them and their children alone so that they might get on with their lives. In July 1996, Princess Diana complained to the Press Complaints Commission about 'intrusive' pictures of her on holiday in France which were published in the Daily Mirror. Princess Diana also obtained an injunction against a press photographer, who has allegedly been ‘harassing’ her for a long time in August 1996. The injunction prevented him from coming within 300 metres of her. The man, named in the writ as Martin Stenning, was the photographer involved in an incident earlier in 1996 in which the Princess jumped out of her car and took his motor cycle ignition key to prevent him from following her.
The writ appeared to treat the freelance press photographer like a stalker. He was prevented from communicating or attempting to communicate, molesting, assaulting and harassing her ‘or otherwise interfering with her safety.’
Anthony Julius, the Princess’s lawyer, stated that:
‘My client has been compelled as a last resort to take legal action. She hopes that, as well as alleviating her own distress, this will highlight the destructive effect of persistent harassment on women's lives.’
Yet the death of the Princess Diana was the subject of more newspaper coverage than the most dramatic events of the Second World War and set a media record, according to Durrants Press Cuttings agency which monitors nearly 200,000 newspapers and magazines a year. No other subject in the agency’s archives, which go back to 1880, compared with the coverage devoted to Diana’s death, funeral and subsequent stories. In death, there was even more press interest than during her life.

Mary: Where’d you learn this?
Johnston: Well, like most things that are fun and illegal…my dad.
Mary: So the stories Eric tell are true?!
Johnston: Afraid so. You remember that book um, something about women are from Venus and men are wrong? Not that I read the book mind you, but I did flip through Gail’s copy of it. Lot of stuff in there about men needing to go off hold up in a cave some time. Now I don’t know if this was actually in the book, but if men can’t find a cave they’ll make one out of what ever circumstances happen to be lying around.
Mary: Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m sure that’s all it is.

P.G.T. Beauregard
P.G.T. Beauregard, in full Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (born May 28, 1818, near New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.—died February 20, 1893, New Orleans), Confederate general in the American Civil War.
Beauregard graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York (1838), and served in the Mexican-American War (1846–48) under the command of Winfield Scott. After the secession of Louisiana from the Union (January 1861), Beauregard resigned from the U.S. Army and was commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate army; he eventually became one of the eight full generals of the Confederacy and participated in almost every important theatre of the war. He commanded the forces that bombarded Fort Sumter, South Carolina, was on the field at the First Battle of Bull Run (1861), and assumed command at Shiloh after the death of General Albert Sidney Johnston (1862). He later conducted the defense of Charleston and toward the end of the war defended the southern approaches to Richmond. Though he proved to be a capable combat commander and often displayed sound strategic sense, Beauregard revealed serious deficiencies as a general officer. His penchant for questioning orders bordered on insubordination.
After the war he returned to Louisiana, where he became a railroad director, adjutant general of the state, and manager of the Louisiana lottery. His last years were marked by bitter quarrels with Joseph E. Johnston, Jefferson Davis, and William Preston Johnston over their published accounts of the war and Beauregard’s role in it. Beauregard was the author of Principles and Maxims of the Art of War (1863) and Report on the Defense of Charleston (1864).

The basic story about my mission, as I now imagine it, is that I launched from Earth on 11/2/75, where my Orion spacecraft was already in orbit. From there, I went to Mars and I landed on Mars on 1/21/76 and left on 1/23/76. I found a lot of details in my "memory" that I used to develop those dates and they are mostly from highway numbers, but I don't want to go into a lot of details about that right now. I have two reasons for why my Mars landing was selected for 1/21/76.

Control Voice: (opening narration) Night comes too soon on the battlefield. For some men it comes permanently, their eyes never open to the light of day. But for this man, fighting this war, there is never total darkness. The spidery beams of light in the sky heat rays that sear through tungsten, steel and flesh as though they were cheesecloth. And this soldier must go against those weapons. His name is Quarlo, and he is a foot soldier, the ultimate infantryman. Trained from birth by the state, he has never known love, or closeness, or warmth. He is geared for only one purpose: to kill the enemy. And the enemy waits for him.

This reminds me of the last time I called the police for assistance. It was because I noticed something familiar about that Tacoma Mall terrorist. I can’t remember the date I was talking to the Seattle police but I think it was shortly after I arrived in the gulag at Pioneer Square. I remember standing there in front of the patrol car camera pointed at me as I told the police patrolman that I had suspicions that the vagrants in the area thought I was an informant. I think I wrote some of that in my journal, but that may have been the period when I was avoiding computer access. The part that stands out in my mind is that he immediately dismissed my suspicions and said that he didn’t think anyone thought I was an informant. Then, as usual, they dumped me off at the hospital. I don’t even remember them asking me any substantive questions. That was the time the paramedic told me I had high-blood pressure as I was waiting in the ER while strapped on the gurney.

Kate: Now I have another reason to hate Christmas.
Billy Peltzer: What are you talking about?
Kate: The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was 9 years old. Me and Mom were decorating the tree, waiting for Dad to come home from work. A couple hours went by. Dad wasn't home. So Mom called the office. No answer. Christmas Day came and went, and still nothing. So the police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart. It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. That's when I noticed the smell. The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He'd been climbing down the chimney... his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that's how I found out there was no Santa Claus.

Not too long ago one of our Ambassadors visited an American armored cavalry regiment stationed on the NATO line in Germany. As he returned to his helicopter, he was followed by a young 19-year-old trooper. The trooper asked him if he could get a message to the President. Well, the Ambassador said that sometimes getting messages to the President was part of his job. And the young trooper then said, "Will you tell him we're proud to be here, and we ain't scared of nothin."
Well, not long ago the Ambassador was in Washington and told me the sequel to that incident. I'd repeated a story in a talk that was carried on our Voice of America radio program, and there in that base in Germany the young trooper heard the broadcast and knew that I'd received his message. His commanding officer said that he ran down the company street yelling: "The system works! The system works!"
Well, the system does work

Remarks at a Luncheon Hosted by the Heritage Foundation
November 30, 1987
Thank you for those very kind words, and thank all of you very much. It's always a great pleasure to speak to the Heritage Foundation and have a chance to see so many old friends and supporters and advisers. As many of you know, Ed Feulner joined the administration for a short while at the beginning of the year and his help and advice were invaluable, but he wanted to get back to Heritage. He knows where the real power center in Washington is. [Laughter]
In the last 10 years, with Ed at the helm and with the constant support and vision of Joe Coors, Heritage has transformed itself from a struggling and valiant coterie of conservatives to, well, a struggling and valiant coterie of conservatives— [laughter] -though today the influence and importance of Heritage is widely recognized in Washington and, indeed, by policymakers around the world.
Thinking back to those days when, as we used to say, all the conservatives in this town could fit into a single phone booth, I remembered the story Lincoln told when he found his entire Cabinet, with the exception of one man, was against him. During a revival meeting in his hometown in Illinois, one of the audience who'd indulged too much in the refreshments beforehand passed out and stayed asleep. And when the preacher challenged the assembly: "All here who are on the Lord's side, stand up!"—and the whole audience, of course, except for that drunk, stood up. And when the preacher then asked, "And who is on the side of the Devil?" He suddenly awoke, he rose and stood there all alone and said, "I don't exactly understand the question, but I'll stand by you, parson, to the last." [Laughter]

Remarks and a Question-and-Answer Session With Students of John A. Holmes High School of Edenton, North Carolina
May 13, 1986
Now, that's all I had to say in terms of prepared remarks. What I really want to do is take your questions. And I understand that Rob Miller will be asking the first question. So, Rob, step up to the microphone, and we'll begin.
Q. Mr. President, my name is Rob Miller, and I expect to attend East Carolina University next fall. Before I start, I'd like to say that I wish you could run for a third term so I could vote for you next time. [Laughter]
The President. Well, thank you very much. They kind of fixed that with the 22d amendment. [Laughter]
Views on the Presidency
Q. My question is: What do you enjoy most about being President of the United States?
The President. Oh, there are so many things, and many things that you don't enjoy, also. I think the greatest is that every once in a while something comes to your attention—maybe it's something you read in the paper about some unfortunate person, or you get a letter that someone managed to get through about some problem that, evidently, there isn't any regular program to solve, and you find that you can solve it. And I know of one case of a baby that had to have a transplant, and we were able to arrange that. And then, just a short time ago, I had the pleasure of seeing that little girl who had been a baby at the time of the transplant, and she came here with her parents to the White House. But it's things like that where you find that being in this position enables you to reach out and touch and get something of that kind done. And you go home feeling 10 feet tall and very happy.

Quotes
Newton Crosby: OK. Listen closely. There's a priest, a minister, and a rabbi. They're out playing golf. They're deciding how much to give to charity. The priest says "We'll draw a circle on the ground, throw the money in the air, and whatever lands inside the circle, we'll give to charity." The minister says "No, we'll draw a circle on the ground, throw the money in the air, and whatever lands outside of the circle, that's what we'll give to charity." The rabbi says "No no no. We'll throw the money way up in the air, and whatever God wants, he keeps!"
