5 things to know about the new royal baby

LONDON (AP) — Royal fans are ready to welcome Prince William and Kate's second child — a younger brother or sister to Prince George, whose birth two years ago whipped up a worldwide media frenzy.

As in 2013, the royals are keeping everyone guessing by disclosing virtually nothing about the baby — including the due date and gender.

If the bookies are to be believed, the baby will be a princess and she will be called Alice.

Here's what we know — and don't know — ahead of the second royal baby's birth, expected in the coming days:

MYSTERY BIRTH DATE

Clarence House announced on Sept. 8 that Kate was pregnant, but gave no clues about the due date other than to say it would be this month. On a recent public visit, Kate reportedly told a charity worker that she is due mid-to-late April.

The baby could share a birthday with her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was born on April 21. The newborn's birthday could also coincide with William and Kate's fourth wedding anniversary, on April 19.

PRINCESS ALICE?

Though there has been no confirmation of the baby's gender, bookies and the British media seem confident it will be a girl. Some suggest that Kate herself offered a hint of what's to come with her choice of clothing: She wore a bright pink coat for her final public appearance, before she disappeared for maternity leave.

As for what the baby will be called, many are betting on one quaint-sounding name: Alice.

The name is by far the favorite among Britain's bookmakers, with William Hill putting odds at 2-1 after a number of unusually large bets came in for it. Ladbrokes puts the odds at 3-1. No one seems to know why, though.

BELLEVUE - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has a new title: father.

His wife, Melinda French Gates, gave birth Friday night to an 8-pound, 6-ounce girl at Overlake Hospital Medical Center. Mother and infant were reported doing well.

Here's The Word: Gateses Have Boy

The second heir to the wealthiest man in the world made his first appearance Sunday. Rory John Gates, the second child of Bill and Melinda French Gates, was born at 2:40 p.m. The baby weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and measured 20 1/2 inches long.

"Bill and Melinda are thrilled to be new parents again," Microsoft spokesman Dan Leach said.

The Microsoft chairman was present for the delivery. Leach declined to disclose the hospital where the child was born.

Rory's older sister, Jennifer, was born in April 1996 at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. She came into the world weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces.

Gates took a brief paternity leave then, and he plans to do the same this time.

"Bill will take a few days off with Melinda, Jennifer and the new baby, and then be right back to work," Leach said.

The company disclosed that Melinda Gates was expecting in December, saying the child was due in June.

Bill and Melinda Gates married New Year's Day 1994.

The value of Gates' current Microsoft stock holdings approaches $80 billion. He has said he intends to give the vast majority to charitable causes.

CHAKOTAY: She was assimilated at a very young age. The Collective's all she knows. She might not want to stay.

JANEWAY: I think she might. We have something the Borg could never offer. Friendship.

CHAKOTAY: I want you to know that disobeying your orders was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do.

JANEWAY: I understand. And I respect the decision you made, even though I disagree with it. What's important is that in the end we got through this, together. I don't ever want that to change.

CHAKOTAY: Agreed.

JANEWAY: Good. Well, I think it's time we get back to our bridge.

CHAKOTAY: No argument there.

THE DIGITAL-IMAGE company expands its photo collection and adds a Web-based gallery that will sell a limited number of handmade prints.

If a thousand words can be distilled to one picture, how many photographs would you need to represent 160 years of photography? Try 65 million, which is the number of images held by Bellevue-based Corbis, the privately held company founded by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.

In an effort to continue extending its appeal, Corbis this week is introducing two offerings from its extensive collection of digital images. Both are aimed at consumers, which the company sees as a growing market.

The announcement came at ImageScape '99, a trade show in Las Vegas being held in conjunction with the Comdex computer trade show.

Gates, who created Corbis with a vision for a day when using digital images would be commonplace, made his first major speech about Corbis this morning at ImageScape.

"Corbis is 10 years old. In a lot of ways it was ahead of its time.

STAGES


Like most Project members he devoured the Discovery Channel on his cable system. There was so much to learn, so much to understand, because he, like many, wanted to get the whole thing, to understand Nature in Her entirety. That was a tall order, of course, maybe an unrealistic one, but if he didn't make it, then his children would. Or their children, who'd be raised and educated to appreciate Nature in all her glory. They'd travel about, field scientists all. He wondered what the ones who went to the dead cities would think… It'd probably be a good idea to make them go, so that they'd understand how many mistakes man had made and learn not to repeat them. Maybe he'd lead some of those field trips himself. New York would be the big one, the really impressive don't-do-this lesson. It would take a thousand years, maybe more, before the buildings collapsed from rusting structural steel and lack of maintenance… The stone parts would never go away, but relatively soon, maybe ten years or so, deer would return to Central Park.

The vultures would do just fine for some time.
