BARNETT: So he seemed to blame others for his own shortcomings. And we have people in our newsroom who have worked with him at previous stations and they say the same thing. Is that a common trait in disturbed people to blame others and not take on responsibility? Because what changes a regular person from being someone who can take on a violent act like this?
FISHER: Well, again this is somebody who externalizes. If he was more narcissistic, at the core of every narcissist, which is somebody who looks to the world like they're the greatest thing, at the core of every narcissist is a shattered ego. They can't deal with any more blame or shame or guilt so they project it outwards. If this is somebody with persecutory delusions who might have been potentially borderline psychotic and we won't necessarily know that, then you are looking at somebody who feels like the world is against him and that can overlap in to narcissistic traits. So what we have to look at here, he saw the world as it was him against the world. What he then did with the South Carolina shooting is he found his cause to attach to. In his mind, I believe he was trying to say I'm going to represent the African-American societal culture, and I'm going to fight that battle for them. And then he was able to focus that on his targets of -- he felt two people who affected his employment at that last news station. And he held a grudge for so long. It wasn't just about them. It was about all the people that wronged him and he just projected all of that rage, anger and hatred onto those individuals.
BARNETT: I guess as a way of trying to justify it in his own mind. You were telling our team earlier as bad as this all is, we don't necessarily see his act as evil?
FISHER: No.
BARNETT: What do you mean by that?
FISHER: Often we want to call the person evil and move on, next story. This is not somebody who was evil. He didn't see his act as evil. He saw himself as a justified persecutor. In other words, somebody who was persecuted first who justifies his persecution of others, and the martyrs, somebody who is trying to fight for a cause something positive.

Others who crossed paths with Flanagan during that time, though, recalled a man who took offense easily.
When Flanagan landed a job at a UnitedHealthcare call center in Roanoke after he was fired, he was usually boisterous and intense, notable for his loud laughter. So Michelle Kibodeaux, who worked with Flanagan, took note one day when he seemed quiet.
"I told him, 'You're being quiet today. The shoe's on the other foot.' He said, 'You don't know me well enough to judge me.'"
Kibodeaux said when she turned to walk away, Flanagan tried to grab her by the shoulder, but she ducked under his hand.
"He said, 'Don't you walk away from me. Don't you turn your back on me,'" she recalled.
Flanagan told her never to speak to him again and she steered clear.

He's a bloodhound for the digital age.
A rambunctious black Labrador named Bear — one of only five dogs in the nation trained to sniff out electronic data devices — played a key role in the arrest of former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle on child-porn charges.
The 2-year-old rescue pooch nosed out a thumb drive that humans had failed to find during a search of Fogle's Indiana house in July, several weeks before he agreed to plead guilty to having X-rated images of minors and paying to have sex with teenage girls.
Bear has taken part in four other investigations, including this week's arrest of Olympics gymnastics coach Marvin Sharp. And he's just been sold to the Seattle Police Department to help investigate Internet crimes.

Hawley Harvey Crippen (September 11, 1862 – November 23, 1910), usually known as Dr. Crippen, was an American homeopath, ear and eye specialist and medicine dispenser. He was hanged in Pentonville Prison for the murder of his wife Cora Henrietta Crippen, and was the first criminal to be captured with the aid of wireless telegraphy.

Their disappearance led the police at Scotland Yard to perform another three searches of the house. During the fourth and final search, they found the remains of a human body, buried under the brick floor of the basement. Pathologist Bernard Spilsbury found traces of the calming drug scopolamine. The corpse was identified by a piece of skin from its abdomen; the head, limbs, and skeleton were never recovered.
Meanwhile, Crippen and Le Neve were crossing the Atlantic on the Montrose, with Le Neve disguised as a boy. Captain Henry George Kendall recognized the fugitives and, just before steaming beyond the range of his ship-board transmitter, he had Telegraphist Lawrence Ernest Hughes send a wireless telegram to the British authorities: "Have strong suspicions that Crippen London cellar murderer and accomplice are among saloon passengers. Mustache taken off growing beard. Accomplice dressed as boy. Manner and build undoubtedly a girl."

Hawley Harvey Crippen, (born 1862, Coldwater, Michigan, U.S.—died November 23, 1910, Pentonville Prison, England), mild-mannered physician who killed his wife, then for a time managed to elude capture, in one of the most notorious criminal cases of the 20th century.
Crippen was a homeopathic physician in New York City when he wed Cora Turner (who later took the stage name Belle Elmore) in 1892. In contrast to her meek, gentle, diminutive husband, Cora Crippen was intimidating and extravagant. After they moved to London in 1897, she performed as a music hall singer and also had affairs with several other men, while he sold patent medicines. He was aided in his business by a young secretary, Ethel Le Neve, who eventually became his mistress. Crippen’s wife disappeared in January 1910, the month after telling him she planned to leave him and to withdraw their savings from the bank. Crippen explained her disappearance to her friends by saying that she had gone on a visit to the United States; later he published an announcement that she had died there. Meanwhile, Le Neve moved into the Crippen house and accompanied the doctor in public wearing Cora Crippen’s jewelry and furs.
Suspicions were raised, and Crippen received a visit from Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard. Crippen told the police that his wife had left him to live with another man. By the time Dew visited the Crippen house a second time, the doctor and his secretary had fled. Dew ordered a thorough search of the house, which led to the discovery of partial human remains in a hole in the basement. An autopsy and forensic analysis identified the remains as those of Cora Crippen, who had been poisoned, then dismembered. In July 1910 Crippen—unaware that his crime had made a sensation in the British press—boarded the SS Montrose to Canada with Le Neve, who wore boy’s clothes and pretended to be his son. The ship’s captain recognized the pair and notified his superiors via the recently developed technology of wireless telegraphy, marking the first time this technology was used to track a criminal and riveting the world’s attention to the ensuing chase. Dew pursued and overtook the fugitive pair on a faster ship to Canada, where he arrested them. The couple were returned to London, where they went on trial in October 1910. Crippen was found guilty of the murder, and he was hanged the following month

Harry Nyquist, (born Feb. 7, 1889, Nilsby, Sweden—died April 4, 1976, Harlingen, Texas, U.S.), American physicist and electrical and communications engineer, a prolific inventor who made fundamental theoretical and practical contributions to telecommunications.
Nyquist moved to the United States in 1907. He earned a B.S. (1914) and an M.S. (1915) in electrical engineering from the University of North Dakota. In 1917, after earning a Ph.D. in physics from Yale University, he joined the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). There he remained until his retirement in 1954, working in the research department and then (from 1934) at Bell Laboratories. Nyquist continued to serve as a government consultant on military communications well after his retirement.
Some of Nyquist’s best-known work was done in the 1920s and was inspired by telegraph communication problems of the time. Because of the elegance and generality of his writings, much of it continues to be cited and used. In 1924 he published “Certain Factors Affecting Telegraph Speed,” an analysis of the relationship between the speed of a telegraph system and the number of signal values used by the system. His 1928 paper “Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory” refined his earlier results and established the principles of sampling continuous signals to convert them to digital signals. The Nyquist sampling theorem showed that the sampling rate must be at least twice the highest frequency present in the sample in order to reconstruct the original signal. These two papers by Nyquist, along with one by R.V.L. Hartley, are cited in the first paragraph of Claude Shannon’s classic essay “The Mathematical Theory of Communication” (1948), where their seminal role in the development of information theory is acknowledged.
In 1927 Nyquist provided a mathematical explanation of the unexpectedly strong thermal noise studied by J.B. Johnson. The understanding of noise is of critical importance for communications systems. Thermal noise is sometimes called Johnson noise or Nyquist noise because of their pioneering work in this field.
In 1932 Nyquist discovered how to determine when negative feedback amplifiers are stable. His criterion, generally called the Nyquist stability theorem, is of great practical importance. During World War II it helped control artillery employing electromechanical feedback systems.
In addition to Nyquist’s theoretical work, he was a prolific inventor and is credited with 138 patents relating to telecommunications.

Plot Summary
In outer space, a Martian spacecraft commanded by Princess Marcuzan and her assistant Dr. Nadir is traveling to Earth to abduct women to breed a new race, since an atomic war has annihilated Martian women. Meanwhile in NASA, Dr. Adam Steele, his assistant Karen Grant and General Bowers are in a press conference presenting the astronaut Colonel Frank Saunders, who will participate of an extended space travel on the next morning. However they do not disclose to the press that Colonel Saunders is an android developed by the scientists. The Martian spacecraft lands on San Juan, in Porto Rico and when they see Saunders's capsule on the air, they believe it is an attack and they shoot the Earth ship down. The android is damaged and wanders on the island scaring people and behaving like Frankenstein. Dr. Steele and Karen head to Porto Rico to rescue the android, while the Martians abduct young women to take them to Mars.

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated Wednesday that small numbers of U.S. personnel are operating on the ground inside Iraq but declined to discuss their locations or activities.
Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, confirming operations that have been widely reported but until now not publicly confirmed by the Bush administration, told reporters at the Pentagon that "there are not significant [U.S.] military forces in northern Iraq right now." Asked how many troops are in Iraq, he said, "I'm not going to go into any more detail on that."
Another defense official said the U.S. personnel in Iraq are working for the CIA. Those people could be CIA employees or U.S. military members temporarily transferred to the control of the intelligence agency.
In the fall of 2001, well over 100 Special Operations troops were "seconded" to CIA operations in and around Afghanistan. The Pentagon was not kept entirely informed about either their missions or whereabouts.
In recent weeks in northern Iraq, another defense official said, "there have been very small numbers that have moved in and out of the area, more CIA than military." A CIA official had no comment.
Representatives of the Iraqi opposition said Wednesday that three U.S. military cargo planes landed at an 8,500-foot-long runway in northeastern Iraq, near the town of Irbil. "I'm not aware of that, actually," Myers said when asked about the report.
In the news conference, Myers announced that eight Coast Guard cutters are being dispatched to protect ports in the Persian Gulf from possible terrorist attacks akin to the October 2000 bombing of the destroyer the USS Cole in a harbor in Yemen, an attack that killed 17 sailors. "Clearly, there's a real threat there," Myers said.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who appeared with Myers, shed new light on the administration's policy of launching pre-emptive attacks against threats before they are fully developed. Rumsfeld contended that the greater the threat, the less the evidence that should be required before attacking.

Columbia Smoothly Carries Israeli, Shipmates Into Space

CAPE CANAVERAL -- Israel's first astronaut and six American shipmates are gearing up for two weeks of research in orbit after shuttle Columbia's liftoff from Kennedy Space Center on Thursday.
The marathon 16-day mission -- the first of six planned for 2003 and the only one not headed to the international space station -- soared smoothly to space laden with more than 80 science experiments. The launch ended two years of delays for a flight repeatedly bumped by shuttle repairs and higher-priority missions.
"If there was ever a time to use the phrase `All good things come to people who wait,' this is the one time," launch director Mike Leinbach radioed the crew moments before liftoff. "Good luck and Godspeed."
"The Lord has blessed us with a beautiful day here," Columbia commander Rick Husband replied

Here was the same beautiful scene, the same abundant foliage, the same splendid palaces and magnificent ruins, the same silver river running between its fertile banks. The gay robes of the beautiful people moved hither and thither among the trees. Some were bathing in exactly the place where I had saved Weena, and that suddenly gave me a keen stab of pain. And like blots upon the landscape rose the cupolas above the ways to the Under-world. I understood now what all the beauty of the Over-world people covered. Very pleasant was their day, as pleasant as the day of the cattle in the field. Like the cattle, they knew of no enemies and provided against no needs. And their end was the same.
'I grieved to think how brief the dream of the human intellect had been. It had committed suicide. It had set itself steadfastly towards comfort and ease, a balanced society with security and permanency as its watchword, it had attained its hopes—to come to this at last. Once, life and property must have reached almost absolute safety. The rich had been assured of his wealth and comfort, the toiler assured of his life and work. No doubt in that perfect world there had been no unemployed problem, no social question left unsolved. And a great quiet had followed.
'It is a law of nature we overlook, that intellectual versatility is the compensation for change, danger, and trouble. An animal perfectly in harmony with its environment is a perfect mechanism. Nature never appeals to intelligence until habit and instinct are useless. There is no intelligence where there is no change and no need of change. Only those animals partake of intelligence that have to meet a huge variety of needs and dangers.
'So, as I see it, the Upper-world man had drifted towards his feeble prettiness, and the Under-world to mere mechanical industry. But that perfect state had lacked one thing even for mechanical perfection—absolute permanency. Apparently as time went on, the feeding of the Under-world, however it was effected, had become disjointed. Mother Necessity, who had been staved off for a few thousand years, came back again, and she began below. The Under-world being in contact with machinery, which, however perfect, still needs some little thought outside habit, had probably retained perforce rather more initiative, if less of every other human character, than the Upper. And when other meat failed them, they turned to what old habit had hitherto forbidden.

Bush Approves Nuclear Response

A classified document signed by President Bush specifically allows for the use of nuclear weapons in response to biological or chemical attacks, apparently changing a decades-old U.S. policy of deliberate ambiguity, it was learned by The Washington Times.
"The United States will continue to make clear that it reserves the right to respond with overwhelming force — including potentially nuclear weapons — to the use of [weapons of mass destruction] against the United States, our forces abroad, and friends and allies," the document, National Security Presidential Directive 17, set out on Sept. 14 last year.
A similar statement is included in the public version of the directive, which was released Dec. 11 as the National Strategy to Combat Weapons of Mass Destruction and closely parallels the classified document. However, instead of the phrase "including potentially nuclear weapons," the public text says, "including through resort to all of our options."
