Battlestar Galactica
Saga of a Star World (1)
[ The very first dialog of the television series begins ]
[ Narrator: ] 'There are those who believe 'that life here began out there, 'far across the universe, 'with tribes of humans 'who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians 'or the Toltecs or the Mayans, 'that they may have been the architects of the great pyramids, 'or the lost civilizations of Lemuria 'or Atlantis. 'Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man 'who even now fight to survive 'somewhere beyond the heavens.
[ President: ] ' Noble delegates, you're anxious to go back to your ships before our rendezvous with the Cylons but I think it appropriate to toast the most significant event in the history of mankind. I would like to raise my chalice to you, not merely as the Quorum of 12, representing the 12 Colonies of man, but as my friends, the greatest leaders ever assembled. As we approach the seventh millennium of time, the human race at last will find peace, thanks to you. To peace.
[ Zac Adama: ] Starbuck, what are you going to say?

I thought a lot about this photo of the USS Taylor FFG-50 after I saw it. Especially because of the perspective of the photographer compared to my own artificial and symbolic memories.

040309-N-4374S-008 At sea aboard USS Taylor (FFG 50) Mar. 9, 2004 - The Oliver Hazard Perry-class ship USS Taylor (FFG 50) conducts a replenishment at sea (RAS) with the fast combat support ship USS Seattle (AOE 3). The guided missile frigate Taylor is part of the USS John F. Kennedy Strike Group and is currently taking part in a Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMTUEX). COMPTUEX is an intermediate level exercise designed to forge the strike group into a cohesive fighting team and is a critical step in pre-deployment training. During COMPTUEX, more than a dozen ships, and Carrier Air Wing Seventeen (CVW-17) embarked on Kennedy, conducted war game exercises using training ranges along the East Coast of the U.S. and the Gulf of Mexico. The exercise took advantage of existing ranges under the Navy’s comprehensive Training Resource Strategy (TRS). These ranges offer training facilities and realistic simulations, better preparing U.S. Navy ships and Sailors to participate in the Global War on Terrorism. Zac, calm down.
Why are you so nervous? He sees me as his little brother.
You're acting like one.
It's a routine patrol.
- Why is it so important to you? - Because it is.
I'm a warrior.
I want to prove that to him.
This may not be the best time.
It's a peace envoy! What trouble could there be? - That's not the point.
- Starbuck, you promised.

The 34-member League of Nations, in its last meeting, transferred its assets to the United Nations and disbanded at midnight Geneva time (2300 GMT).
The International Court of Justice, established by the United Nations and often referred to as the World Court, held its first meeting, assembling at The Hague.
The United States gave full diplomatic recognition to the government of Josip Broz Tito in Yugoslavia.

Postlude
Even while the Versailles Treaty was being drafted, the men of the A.E.F. were returning home as quickly as possible—in cargo ships converted into transports and aboard cruisers and battleships. Demobilized at regional centers in the United States, they joined the ranks of the country's more aged veterans.
The aftermath of the war in the United States divas horror at the casualties followed by a great wave of disillusionment and a reversion to isolationism. Americans wondered if the victory was worth the price, even though the country was more prosperous. The Senate, in the same mood, refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles, and the United States never became a member of the League of Nations. Had the United States joined the League, the course of history might have taken a different turn.
It took another World War to convince Americans that the United States could not isolate itself from the rest of the world—that a nation as wealthy and powerful as the United States had certain moral obligations toward other nations.
The United Nations, now described as the world's best hope of peace, is carrying on the work started by the League of Nations. The League expired by its own vote on April 18, 1946, and bequeathed its properties to the United Nations.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Miniseries (2003)
Six: I see they've put you to work. (He looks over, sees her sitting next to him.) Ignoring me won't help.
Baltar: No, I've decided you're an expression of my, uh, subconscious mind playing itself out through my waking states.
Six: Oh, I'm only in your head?
Baltar: Exactly.
Six: Hmm. Have you considered the possibility that I could very well exist *only* in your head? Without being a hallucination? Maybe you see and hear me, because while you were sleeping, I implanted a chip in your brain that transmits my image right into your conscious mind.
Baltar: No, no, see that's me again. My subconscious self is expressing irrational fears, which I must choose to ignore.
Six: (moving closer to him) What are you working on?
Baltar: If you were really a chip in my head, I wouldn't have to tell you, now would I?
Six: Indulge me.
Baltar: I'm trying to figure out how you managed to pull this kind of an attack. You virtually shut down the entire defense network without firing a shot. Entire squadrons lost power just as they engaged the enemy. The CMP's a navigation program, but you, uh, you made changes to the programs that you were building in, backdoors for your company to exploit later.
Six: All true

Article: From Guy Waiting In Line To ATM's 30th Bday.
Article from: Banking Wire Article date: June 18, 2003
The automatic teller machine (ATM) has just turned 30.
On June 4, 1973, a trio of inventors-Don Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain-were granted a patent on the machine, the idea for which is largely credited to Wetzel even though there were attempts as early as 1939 to develop such an "automatic teller."
Wetzel said he first got the idea in 1968 while waiting in the lobby of a Dallas bank. At the time he was VP-product planning with Docutel, a manufacturer of automated baggage handling equipment for airlines and airports. The first working prototype was created in 1969, but the patent was not issued until four years later

On This Day In Finance: June 4 - The Birth Of The Modern ATM
By Investopedia Staff on June 04, 2009
On June 4, 1973, the first patent for the automated teller machine (ATM) is awarded to Don Wetzel, Tom Barnes and George Chastain of Docutel. The patent was issued following years of research at an estimated cost of $5 million.
Although Docutel was credited with the creation of the first magstripe ATM (known as the Docuteller at the time), the idea and use of less advanced ATMs dates back to the late 1930s. Several other prototypes were introduced to the public over the next 30 years, however the free-standing magstripe machine was the eventual victor and is still used by financial institutions to this day.
The first Docuteller was installed at New York City's Chemical Bank in 1969, while the first fully functioning "Total Teller" was introduced in 1971. Following the awarding of the patent in 1973, ATMs begin to spread across the nation and have remained a constant in consumer banking.

THE KILLERS
"Spaceman"
It started with a low light,
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed
And then they took my blood type
It left a strange impression in my head.
You know that I was hoping,
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind
But when they cut me open,
I guess I changed my mind.

Title: The Time Machine
Author: H. G. (Herbert George) Wells
VII
'Looking at these stars suddenly dwarfed my own troubles and all the gravities of terrestrial life. I thought of their unfathomable distance, and the slow inevitable drift of their movements out of the unknown past into the unknown future. I thought of the great precessional cycle that the pole of the earth describes. Only forty times had that silent revolution occurred during all the years that I had traversed. And during these few revolutions all the activity, all the traditions, the complex organizations, the nations, languages, literatures, aspirations, even the mere memory of Man as I knew him, had been swept out of existence.
