Gates' $10 Million To UW Honors Mom

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates has donated $10 million to the University of Washington in honor of his late mother, the UW said today.

The gift will establish the Mary Gates Endowment for Students to support outstanding undergraduate students. Mary Gates, who died last June, was a 1950 UW graduate and served on the university's Board of Regents from 1975 to 1993.

"I decided I wanted to do something significant in my mother's name soon after she passed away," Gates said. "I thought the university would be a good choice. She put an immense amount of time into that and believed in its importance."

Income from the endowment will be used to extend students' education beyond the classroom, said Fred Campbell, vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. It will support scholarships, internships and mentoring programs for work with faculty and community leaders.

That might mean a student takes on a special biology project with a faculty member or devotes time each week to community service.

The endowment also will fund "Venture Scholarships" to students most capable of carrying out independent work. Examples might include writing an opera, or traveling to do research.

While some money will be reserved for the best and brightest, much will be spread throughout the student body, giving any student the chance to apply.

University officials said regents will be asked at a May 19 meeting to name a campus building Mary Gates Hall. The building formerly housed the physics department but is to be renovated and expanded as a center for undergraduate education.

The university approached the Gates family with the idea of an undergraduate endowment about two months ago, when it became apparent that a new name would be needed for the old building.

Gates donated $12 million in October 1991 to establish a UW department of molecular biotechnology.
