Microsoft's own Generation X: Windows XP, Office XP new names for upgrades

Microsoft is trying to jazz up the names of its flagship Windows and Office products, calling upcoming versions Windows XP and Office XP rather than naming them by the year of their release.
Company officials said XP is short for experience and highlights the experience they hope computer users will enjoy with the new software.

Chairman Bill Gates unveiled a new, more Internet-friendly version of the No. 1 software maker's Windows operating system, promising that it will unlock new potential for the personal computer. Marine Officer Is Charged in Investigation of Pornographic Web Site

A Marine Corps second lieutenant at the base in Twentynine Palms has been charged with involvement in a gay pornographic Web site, officials said Monday.
Douglas W. Shirer, 26, a supply officer, has been charged in connection with a San Francisco-based Web site that purports to show naked Marines.
Participation in pornography is forbidden under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
An investigation into the Web site, which uses the Marine Corps colors and logo, was begun after an anonymous letter was sent to commandant Gen. James Jones alleging that Marines were being recruited by other Marines to pose naked.
Ten Marines at Camp Pendleton were discharged in 1994 for alleged involvement in pornography.

Bush Vows Better Pay to Soldiers
President promises to improve health benefits, telling crowd of GIs in Georgia that 'America is not serving you well enough.'

FT. STEWART, Ga. — President Bush on Monday announced plans for $5.7 billion in spending for America's servicemen and women, the bulk of it in pay increases and improved health benefits for soldiers and their families.
"America is not serving you well enough," Bush told hundreds of cheering GIs and their families.
"We'll do better. I have great goals for all our military--to advance its technology, to rethink its strategy."
The bulk of the money, $3.9 billion, would go to improve health benefits. The funding also would include $1.4 billion to increase pay--$400 million more than Bush had promised during the campaign. And the president said he will seek another $400 million to improve military housing.
The funding requests will be in Bush's budget proposal for fiscal year 2002, which begins Oct. 1.
"If our military is to attract the best of America, we owe you the best," the president said.
Bush's appearance and 11-minute speech, delivered on a bleak day at the Army's largest post east of the Mississippi, launched a weeklong drive to focus attention on national defense and to boost morale.
The president is scheduled today to visit the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va., to inspect the next generation of warfare technology. On Wednesday, he will visit with National Guard and Reserve troops and their civilian employers in Charleston, W.Va. Bush himself is a veteran of the Air National Guard.
Despite the fanfare Monday over Bush's announcements, the three days of military events come at a difficult moment.
Though Bush condemned the Clinton administration during the campaign for neglecting the military, he has announced that he is holding off major defense spending at least until the new defense team, headed by Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, can conduct a top-to-bottom review of the military's needs.
That announcement touched off protests from defense hawks, who strongly backed Bush, and has drawn taunts from Democrats.
The White House clearly hoped that the three military visits and the offer of additional money aimed directly at improving the lives of military personnel would blunt that criticism.
Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, praised Bush's proposal, calling it "an excellent first step in the effort to keep faith with the men and women in uniform and their families."

As New Data Shrink Gene Pool, Patent Suits May Be Next Splash
Science: Clashes over ownership rights of DNA segments may slow research for disease cures, some fear.

WASHINGTON — In the quest to cure disease, companies are spending millions of dollars to scour human DNA and find crucial, tiny segments known as genes. On Monday, that job got far easier.
Two competing teams of scientists laid out new information about where genes tend to be clustered in the vast expanse of DNA. Equally important, both teams said they believe that humans have only about 30,000 genes, far fewer than the 100,000 or more that many experts had expected.
"Every one of the searches [for a gene] is like looking for a needle in a haystack," said Dr. Francis S. Collins, leader of one of the teams. "Well, guess what? The haystack just got three times smaller."
But while genes may be easier to find, researchers found a potential dark side to the news: It could bring chaos to the process of patenting genes, which in turn could slow the process of turning genes and their products into new cures for disease. Because companies usually want to have secure ownership rights to genes before investing the millions of dollars it takes to develop drugs from them, doubts about patent rights could have far-reaching effects.

Ashcroft Cautious About Pardon Issue

WASHINGTON — Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft stepped carefully around the controversy surrounding former President Clinton's pardons Monday, saying a president's clemency power has "very few limits," but refusing to rule out a federal review of Clinton's actions.
"I believe the president has a very substantial right to pardon individuals that's granted by the United States Constitution," Ashcroft told reporters at his first news conference in office. "And when a president exercises that right, he operates, I would hope, within the limits of the Constitution and there are very few limits in that respect."
Ashcroft also pledged to work with members of Congress who are pressing for an immunity agreement to compel the congressional testimony of Denise Rich, the former wife of pardoned fugitive Marc Rich.
Republicans want to find out whether the pardon was influenced by about $1 million that Denise Rich contributed to Democratic candidates or $450,000 that she gave to Clinton's presidential library fund. She refused to appear at a congressional hearing on the matter last week. Instead, she asserted her 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination.

Spacewalk Improves View from Space Station Lab

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Two spacewalking astronauts hung a window shutter on the sparkling new Destiny science laboratory Monday, providing an unparalleled view of Earth from the international space station.
As soon as Thomas Jones and Robert Curbeam Jr. placed the aluminum shutter on Destiny's 20-inch porthole and hooked up a gearbox, the station's residents cranked open the shutter from inside.
The shutter is needed to protect the window against damage from micrometeorites. The window had been covered with insulating material before the shutter was installed, and no one could look out.
The porthole, 6 inches thick and made of four panes, is the finest optical-quality window ever built into a spacecraft. Astronauts and cosmonauts will photograph and observe the Earth through the window, using high-powered cameras and telescopes.
The first picture, naturally, was of the two space shuttle Atlantis spacewalkers. Space station Alpha's commander, Bill Shepherd, called it "an awesome, awesome shot."
"He's talking Oscar," shuttle pilot Mark Polansky told the spacewalkers, who burst into laughter. The spacewalkers and station residents waved at each other from opposite sides of the window.

E-Mail Virus Spreads Using Microsoft

NEW YORK — A computer virus pretending to be an electronic photo of teenage tennis star Anna Kournikova overwhelmed e-mail servers throughout Europe and North America on Monday.
The virus slowed e-mail systems and forced some companies to shut down their e-mail while they cleaned out the rogue program. Security experts said the virus doesn't permanently damage computers.
Within a few hours, the virus had spread almost as rapidly as last May's "I Love You" virus, which caused tens of millions of dollars in damage worldwide. Anti-virus researchers expected more computer infections during business today in Asia.
The virus only spreads through Microsoft Corp's Outlook e-mail software on computers that use Microsoft Windows, although Macintosh users and those using other e-mail programs can still spread the virus manually.
The virus is known as a worm because it can automatically send copies of itself to everyone on a recipient's address book. That could be thousands of copies per person for a larger corporation.
The virus, which appears to have originated in Europe, comes as the attachment "AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs" and carries the message "Hi: Check This!" At least three subject lines have been identified: "Here you have," "Here you go" and "Here you are"--all followed by a smiling face.
Microsoft spokesman Adam Sohn said the company released a security update last June, shortly after the "I Love You" virus spread using similar techniques. That update generates a warning any time a computer program attempts to access Outlook's address book.
Mikko Hypponen, manager of anti-virus research for F-Secure Corp., said the virus does not permanently damage computers, but if the virus, if left alone, will try to contact a Dutch Web site Jan. 26, 2002.
Many anti-virus companies have developed software updates to filter the new virus, and many network administrators responded by configuring e-mail servers to automatically reject the message.

Following the September 11 attacks later that year, Rumsfeld oversaw the U.S.-led attack on Afghanistan that resulted in the overthrow of the Taliban, which was harbouring Osama bin Laden—mastermind of the September 11 and other terrorist attacks against U.S. targets—and other al-Qaeda members. In March 2003 U.S. forces launched an invasion of Iraq (see Iraq War). The regime of Iraqi Pres. ?addam ?ussein was quickly toppled, and Rumsfeld initially earned praise for his handling of the war. However, as fighting continued, some accused him of deploying an inadequate number of troops. He faced further criticism in 2004 when photographs of U.S. soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad were published. Following the 2006 midterm elections—in which the Republicans suffered heavy losses, in large part because of the growing opposition to the Iraq War—Rumsfeld announced his resignation. He was replaced by Robert M. Gates in December 2006.

Against all odds, the astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia tried to gain control of their shattered and tumbling ship in the seconds before they lost consciousness and died.
A pilot punched buttons on a control panel and tried to restart systems as the vessel — its heat shield shattered — violently spun, pitched and rolled some 200,000 feet above Texas, a little north of the Dallas area.
The crew performed courageously, trying to problem-solve their way to safety. But the Feb. 1, 2003, accident was not survivable, NASA said Tuesday in a new report that reconstructed the crash second by second and suggested changes to protect future crews. Within moments the crew was unconscious.
The detailed analysis of the craft's breakup and free fall by NASA's Spacecraft Crew Survival Investigative Team offered a sobering reminder of the hazards of human spaceflight.
Rick Husband, William McCool, Mike Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon succumbed to violent trauma as the crew compartment snapped away from the shuttle's body, and the life-sustaining oxygen inside rushed out through small but growing breaches in the walls above and below them.

My co-worker, Frank, from the office at First Federal came over to help me move all my stuff into the truck. I got the largest truck they had and it was well too large for all my stuff. At one point as I was driving down the interstate, a truck driver pulled up beside me, honked his horn, and pointed to the back of my truck. I didn't know what he was talking about and I didn't stop. Then the trucker behind him did the same thing as he passed, so I stopped on the interstate and went back to see what they were talking about. At some point earlier, the brakes had locked up on the full trailer that I was towing my 1990 red Mazda RX-7 on and there was a lot of smoke coming from it.

NASA has conducted the Adaptive Performance Optimization experiment aboard Orbital Sciences Corporation's Lockheed L-1011-100. The program was developed by engineers at the Dryden Flight Research Center. Dryden was also involved in limited wake vortex studies using an L-1011 in 1977.
The Adaptive Performance Optimization project was designed to reduce the aerodynamic drag of large subsonic transport aircraft by varying the camber of the wing through real-time adjustment of flaps or ailerons in response to changing flight conditions. Reducing the drag will improve aircraft efficiency and performance, resulting in signifigant fuel savings for the nation's airlines worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually..
Flights for the NASA experiment were made periodically over the next couple of years on the modified wide-bodied jetliner, with all flights flown out of Bakersfield's Meadows Field. The experiment was part of Dryden's Advanced Subsonic Transport Aircraft Research program.
Dryden conducted extensive wake vortice tests beginning in the 1970's. These wake vortices first became a serious concern when large jetliners were first introduced. The aircraft trailed vortices, created by any large-bodied aircraft, were powerful enough to cause problems for business jets and even other airliners.
Dryden became interested in vortex research both for safety and as a matter of aerodynamics. A wingtip vortex seriously reduces effiecency, causing drag, and therefore a consequent penalty in fuel consumption and performance.
The majority of the tests were conducted using spoilers on a Boeing 747-100, which NASA had just acquired for the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing (ALT) tests. With the two spoilers on the outer panels of each wing extended, the vortices were greatly reduced and the chase aircraft could safely fly five kilometers behind the large aircraft, compared to 15 kilometers with no spoilers.
Dryden's 747 wake vortex studies clearly indicated that the use of spoilers could reduce the severity of wake vortices. In July, 1977, the center began a brief series of tests on a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar to determine if the spoiler that worked so well on the 747 could be applied to other wide-body aircraft as well.
The test showed that while spoilers on the Tristar could reduce wake vortices, they were not as effective in doing so as the spoilers on the 747. NASA is continuing wake vortex studies to this day. These projects can be expected to improve the operational safety of many future aircraft.

On January 31, 1957, a Douglas DC-7B operated by Douglas Aircraft Company was involved in a mid-air collision with a United States Air Force Northrop F-89 Scorpion and crashed into the schoolyard of Pacoima Junior High School located in Pacoima, a suburb in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California. By February 1, seven people had died and about 75 had been injured due to the incident. A 12-year-old boy subsequently died from multiple injuries from the incident on February 2.

The MiG-29 was designed in response to a new generation of American fighters, which included the F-15 and F-16. Designed as an air defense fighter, this dual-purpose aircraft also possessed a ground attack capability. The task of producing a "frontal" or tactical fighter for the Frontal Aviation Regiments of the Soviet Air Force went to the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau (MiG OKB). Employing all the technical data available about the most advanced Western aircraft, the MiG designers started working on the MiG-29 in the early 1970s, and the first prototype made its first flight on Oct. 6, 1977. U.S. reconnaissance satellites detected the new fighter in November 1977, and NATO gave it the designation "Fulcrum."
Production started in 1982, and deliveries to Frontal Aviation units started in 1983. By comparison, the USAF's first operational F-15As arrived seven years earlier in 1976, and its F-16As entered operational service four years earlier in 1979.
Although newer, the MiG-29 still lagged behind the most modern Western fighters in several important areas. For instance, the aircraft designers had little experience in either fly-by-wire controls or lightweight composite materials for airframe construction, and the first MiG-29 versions used a conventional hydraulic flight control system and an aluminum alloy fuselage. Over time, MiG designers addressed these deficiencies, and later variants of the MiG-29 incorporated some fly-by-wire controls and composite materials.
Nevertheless, the MiG-29 presented a formidable threat to Western pilots. The radars used on earlier Soviet fighters had been unable to distinguish aircraft flying below them from ground clutter, and low-flying aircraft could avoid detection. With the Phazotron NIIR N019 Doppler radar (NATO designation "Slot Back") capable of detecting a target more than 60 miles away, infrared tracking sensors, and a laser rangefinder carried on the MiG-29, a pilot could track and shoot at aircraft flying below him. Also, the pilot's Shchel-3UM-1 helmet-mounted aiming device turned the MiG-29 into a very dangerous threat once opponents came within visual range. No longer did a pilot have to turn his aircraft toward a target and wait for his missiles' sensors to "lock-on" before firing. Now, the pilot simply turned his head toward a target, and the helmet aimed the missile's sensors toward the target. This "off boresight" procedure gave the MiG-29 pilot a great advantage at close range.
The aircraft on display was an early model Soviet Air Force MiG-29A (S/N 2960516761) assigned to the 234th Gvardeiskii Istrebitelnii Aviatsionnii Polk (234th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment) stationed at Kubinka Air Base near Moscow. It was one of the six MiG-29s that made a good will visit to Kuoppio-Rissala, Finland, in July 1986. This event marked the first public display of the MiG-29.

BY VIRTUE of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the statutes of the United States, and in order to define further the functions and duties of the Office for Emergency Management in the Executive Office of the President with respect to the unlimited emergency as declared by the President on May 27,1941, and for the purpose of facilitating the dissemination of factual information to the citizens of the country on the progress of the defense effort and on the defense policies and activities of the Government, it is hereby ordered as follows:
1. There is established within the Office for Emergency Management of the Executive Office of the President an Office of Facts and Figures, at the head of which shall be a Director appointed by the President. The Director shall discharge his responsibilities and duties under the direction and supervision of the President. The Director shall receive no salary or other remuneration for his services, but shall be entitled to actual and necessary transportation, subsistence, and other expenses incidental to the performance of his duties.
2. Subject to such policies and directions as the President may from' time to time prescribe, the Office of Facts and Figures shall formulate programs designed to facilitate a widespread and accurate understanding of the status and progress of the national defense effort and of the defense policies and activities of the Government; and advise with the several departments and agencies of the Government concerning the dissemination of such defense information. The Office of Facts and Figures shall rely upon the services and facilities of existing agencies of the Government for the dissemination of information.
3. The several departments and agencies of the Government shall make available to the Director, upon his request, such information and data as he may deem necessary to facilitate the most coherent and comprehensive presentation to the Nation of the facts and figures of national defense.
4. There shall be in the Office of Facts and Figures an Advisory Committee consisting of the Director as chairman and such representatives of the Federal Government and other members as he may determine. The members of the Advisory Committee shall serve without compensation, but shall be entitled to necessary travel, subsistence, and other expenses incidental to the performance of their duties.
5. Within the limits of such funds as may be made available to the Office of Facts and Figures, the Director may employ necessary personnel and make provision for the necessary supplies, facilities, and services. The Office of Facts and Figures shall use such fiscal, personnel, and other general business services and facilities as may be made available to it through the Office for Emergency Management.

When Drill connects with a child, he apparently leaves something inside them like a Genetic-tracking device.
I believe it allows him to connect with the child.
It gives him some sort of a a a symbiotic link.
Do you have proof of this? We know that Drill is losing energy.
It's dissipating.
I mean, do we really believe that this is some sort of coincidence that just as Drill is becoming weaker, - our kids are, too? - Well, what exactly do you propose we do about it? We treat it like an epidemic.
If if we isolate the kids isolate them? We give them the best possible care.
We allow them to recover.
We continue our tests.
But the key goal here is to protect them from Drill.
If if we start rounding up children, people are gonna ask why.
If they start dying and we did nothing to prevent this, they are gonna do a whole lot more than start asking questions, sir.
