The Uniform Code of Military Justice

I'm not here just to entertain you with a compelling story.

You're supposed to be doing something.

I have been debating whether to go to the trouble of writing extensively about a dream I had just before waking up. One part that was clear was at the ending when I was walking through the corridors of a hospital and I could see my wife Phoebe up ahead and I later wrote her a note that at first seemed to be an email I was sending but yet in the dream I was clearly aware that I wrote at the ending "I love you" and then on the next line I wrote "I miss you" but now as I write this I cannot remember the sequence of those two lines and which one I wrote first but I clearly remember from the dream as it still lingers in my mind that I do miss her. Then I remember from the dream that I signed the letter with "Kerry."

These vermin out here are just looking for trouble.

That is all they want.

They want trouble.

They want to instigate trouble so that I will be forced to use force.

They must think it is some kind of get out of jail free card or something for them.

After I read over this again just now it reminded me of the dream just before waking up this evening and something the RIO said over the intercom of the F-14 Tomcat I was in as the pilot.

Hammock activity

A Hammock activity is a schedule (project management) or project planning term for a grouping of subtasks that "hangs" between two end dates it is tied to. (Or the two end-events it is fixed to.)

A Hammock activity groups subtasks which are not related in the hierarchial sense of a Work Breakdown Structure.

A Hammock activity groups subtasks which are not related in a logical sense of a dependency (project management) where one subtask must wait for another.

Usages:

Group dissimilar activities that lead to an overall capability, such as preparations under a summary label, e.g. "vacation preparation";

I could see very well in the dream that we were flying over some mountainous terrain and there was a Libyan military jet below me and to my right side. The dialog that I believe was from the RIO in the seat behind me was about that opposing fighter and the part that I remember the best is that he was saying the the pilot of that Libyan jet was wearing a mask. I could see the jet well enough to establish the make but I was far enough away that I could not see the pilot or even if he was wearing an oxygen mask. The first detail on that notion I remember either during the dream or after I have pondered over it is that my RIO was looking at him through binoculars. At some point afterwards the thought occurred to me that we had actually flown close enough to that Libyan aircraft that I could see visually unaided that he was wearing an oxygen mask. There was some other dialog from my RIO and I have pondered over whether he was also communicating with the Hawkeye or the carrier or both over the radio the details I was hearing from him. We were preparing to engage the Libyan fighter with the weapons on my aircraft and this part about the summary label for the project item reminds me of something my RIO was saying but I cannot remember precisely what he was saying. It was as though he was scheduling a task for our fire-control computer and I heard him define the text of the label for that task of firing at the opposing fighter.

I’m guessing I didn’t have anymore Sea Service time, which reflects, as I recall, the time a Sailor is assigned to a ship of the fleet, because I was assigned to a SEAL team from the time I returned in 1987 to 1990. I guess further my Sea Service, although interspersed with temporary duty assignments such as shuttle missions, resumed when I was assigned to the Arleigh Burke in 1991. My DD-214 doesn’t reflect that because, first of all, it is about Kerry Burgess, but also because it only reflects the period ending 5/14/90. I may have still flown as a fighter and bomber pilot after 1987, but I don’t think that was ever my primary role again after returning. I am not sure what to think about the thoughts I have had about flying the Apache gunship. Maybe that is something else I did occasionally.

Damnit.

Something just flashed into my mind about a dream I had when I last was asleep, having woken up in the past hour or so.

But what was it I just saw?

Something about flying the Apache attack helicopter?

There was something very detailed in my dream but something just flashed into my mind for a fraction of a second and I could not keep it long enough to focus on it.

The American Presidency Project

William J. Clinton

XLII President of the United States: 1993-2001

Telephone Remarks to a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Dinner in Jupiter, Florida

October 3, 2000

[The President's remarks are joined in progress.]

The President. ——on the tarmac at the Miami airport for over an hour, and the pilot said we still couldn't take off because of the heavy rains and winds. And I really looked forward to coming. I must say, I feel a little jinxed. Every time I come to Jupiter or try to, something happens. Once before, when I was coming there, you may remember, I tore my leg up, and it took me a couple years, but I finally got back there. And I hope I can come back and see you.

I want to thank the Barots for hosting this dinner tonight. I want to thank Congressman Wexler for being there and for being such a good friend and supporter. I want to thank the candidates who are there, my longtime friend Elaine Bloom, Patsy Kurth, Jean Elliott Brown. Thank you for running for Congress.

And I want to tell the young dance troupe how sorry I am I didn't get to see you dance. I looked forward to it, and I hope I can see you dance either here or in Washington at the earliest possible opportunity. But I really thank you for the efforts you made.

And I want to thank all of you who came out tonight to help our House Democrats and our candidates. I feel good about this election, but it's a long way between now and election day and we have to work very, very hard.

I think it should be clear from the campaigns that have been run by the challengers here in Florida what the stakes are and what the differences are. And the only thing I promised myself is that I would do everything I could between now and election day to help us win the House back and to win as many Senate seats as possible. As you know, I'm especially interested in the one in New York.

But I have learned that 8 years of experience teaches that every single Senate seat, every single House seat is profoundly important. We have a different economic policy. We have a different crime policy. We have a different education policy, a different health care policy, a different environmental policy, and we have a very different view about what our relationships with other countries around the world ought to be, and America's responsibilities beyond our borders. And for all these reasons, I think it is imperative that we elect every person we possibly can.

I want to thank those of you who have supported me these last 8 years. It has helped us do the things that we've done in America and, especially, in Florida, from saving the Everglades to moving the Southern Command here to trying to help revive the economy in every part of the State.

I want to thank those of you who have come to our country from other nations and who have made it a stronger, more diverse, more interesting place, far more well prepared for the new century. And I want to urge you to do everything you can, to talk to all your friends, people who would never come to an event like this, between now and election day, about why it's imperative that we keep this economy going and keep paying down the debt; why it's important that we invest in the education of our children and the health care of our seniors; why it's important that we find ways to preserve the environment, even as we grow the economy; and why it's important that we make a safer world for our children.

The Democrats are right on all these issues. And I can tell you that there is a huge difference between having the votes of a majority, and not. And so every one of these people deserves your support. And again, I am profoundly grateful, and I am just sick I'm not there. I really looked forward to being there, and I didn't give up until we had sat on the tarmac for an hour, and the Air Force said there was no way. And they told me it would take over 3 hours to drive there, because the fog is so thick in Miami, you can't see your hand before you.

So I hope you'll give me a raincheck. And I thank you again for being so generous and good and supportive to our candidates for the House.

NOTE: The President spoke at 6:30 p.m. by telephone from the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, FL. In his remarks, he referred to dinner hosts Gopi and Dilip Barot; and State Representative Elaine Bloom, State Senator Patsy Kurth, and Jean Elliott Brown, candidates for Florida's 22d, 15th, and 16th Congressional Districts, respectively. The transcript released by the Office of the Press Secretary did not include the complete opening remarks of the President.

Memorable quotes for

2010 (1984)

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Wait... do you know why HAL did what he did?

Chandra: Yes. It wasn't his fault.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Whose fault was it?

Chandra: Yours.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: Mine?

Chandra: Yours. In going through HAL's memory banks, I discovered his original orders. You wrote those orders. Discovery's mission to Jupiter was already in the advanced planning stages when the first small Monolith was found on the Moon, and sent its signal towards Jupiter. By direct presidential order, the existence of that Monolith was kept secret.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: So?

Chandra: So, as the function of the command crew - Bowman and Poole - was to get Discovery to its destination, it was decided that they should not be informed. The investigative team was trained separately, and placed in hibernation before the voyage began. Since HAL was capable of operating Discovery without human assistance, it was decided that he should be programmed to complete the mission autonomously in the event the crew was incapacitated or killed. He was given full knowledge of the true objective... and instructed not to reveal anything to Bowman or Poole. He was instructed to lie.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: What are you talking about? I didn't authorize anyone to tell HAL about the Monolith!

Chandra: Directive is NSC 342/23, top secret, January 30, 2001.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: NSC... National Security Council, the White House.

Chandra: I don't care who it is. The situation was in conflict with the basic purpose of HAL's design: The accurate processing of information without distortion or concealment. He became trapped. The technical term is an H. Moebius loop, which can happen in advanced computers with autonomous goal-seeking programs.

Walter Curnow: The goddamn White House.

Dr. Heywood Floyd: I don't believe it.

Chandra: HAL was told to lie... by people who find it easy to lie. HAL doesn't know how

We all saw it. We read the data.
We know its there.
But just suppose...that it had
something to do with the monolith?
Now before you get that look on your
face just listen to me for a minute.
Weve been sending probes out here
since the 70s.
So have you guys.
But none of us have ever encountered
even the slightest signs of chlorophyll...
...on any of Jupiters moons. Never.
FLOYD: And we certainly were close
enough, werent we?
Nine years ago
the monolith was detected here.
Discovery was sent up and everything
went wacko. You catching my drift?
So here we are, nine years later,
trying to figure out what happened...
...and what the monolith is all about.
FLOYD: And guess what we discover
along the way?
The possibility of life of some kind...
...where it never existed before.

Sir Alec John Jeffreys

Genetic Fingerprints

It may be difficult to imagine a world without the now-indispensable tool known as genetic fingerprinting, which analyzes the unique patterns found in human and animal DNA to determine an individual’s biological identity. But in fact, this scientific breakthrough, also known as DNA fingerprinting, was discovered fairly recently, in 1984, by British scientist Alec John Jeffreys at the University of Leicester, England. It is used around the world today in forensics, paternity testing, and for wildlife classification.

Jeffreys was born on January 9, 1950 in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. Inspired by his inventor father, he was already curious about science as a young boy, conducting complicated experiments with his chemistry set and impressing his teachers and friends. He excelled at school in both biology and chemistry and entered Oxford University to study biochemistry, where he earned a first-class degree in the subject in 1972, followed by a PhD in 1975.

He moved on from Oxford to work as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Amsterdam from 1975 to 1977, where he conducted research on globin genes. With an already established reputation as a promising innovator in his field, Jeffreys continued on to the University of Leicester as a lecturer in genetics, where he chose to study DNA variation and the evolution of gene families.

Jeffreys’ broad goal was to track genetic markers in the DNA of members of the same family, looking for inheritance patterns for illness and disease. He and his colleagues concentrated on “mini-satellite” sections of human DNA, which contained more apparent, dramatic variations than other strands, known as “core” sequences. These would make for better markers for tracking the positions of genes.

In an attempt to develop a process to isolate many of these mini-satellites at once by using chemical probes to detect certain chemical motifs that characterized these DNA regions, Jeffreys took x-ray films of DNA for examination. (DNA can be extracted from tissue cells, including hair and skin, as well as bodily fluids such as blood. Its patterns can be examined as an arrangement of bands or stripes on a piece of x-ray film.)

On the morning of September 10, 1984, Jeffreys looked at one of the films and made a startling discovery: Not only could he see many mini-satellites as he had expected, but he also saw that the mini-satellites for one individual varied greatly from those of another individual. As such, the DNA patterns for each individual appeared to be unique. This meant that DNA could create an exclusive biological identity for every person, with the exception of identical twins, who share identical DNA “fingerprints.”

Jeffreys quickly understood the implications of this revelation, especially for the practical use it would have in the area of forensic science. He obtained patents for his discoveries by the end of 1984 and published his findings in a four-part series in the journal Nature in 1985.

Soon after, the media discovered Jeffreys’ technology, and this led to a great deal of interest from the legal community. Lawyers involved in an immigration case first used DNA fingerprinting to prove that a young Ghanaian boy was truly the son of two parents who had become U.K. citizens. The boy had been denied entry into Britain, but DNA evidence proved that he was indeed the couple’s biological son.

Jeffreys’ technique was used to solve a criminal case for the first time in 1986, when it was used to convict a rapist and killer of two girls in Leicestershire. The technology has also been used many times to exonerate formerly convicted suspects. In addition, it proved the authenticity of “Dolly” the sheep as the world’s first true cloned mammal.

Today, DNA profiling is a standard practice in forensics laboratories around the world, and the U.K. is one of a number of countries that have extensive DNA databases – a system that some oppose for reasons related to individuals’ right to privacy. Nevertheless, the technique of DNA fingerprinting has been used thousands of times with positive, constructive results, and the process continues to improve. Today’s DNA fingerprinter can process up to hundreds of samples per day.

Jeffreys’ numerous honors and awards include election as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986, the 1987 Davy Medal from the Royal Society, and the 1998 Australia Prize. He was knighted in 1994. Since 1991, he has been the Royal Society Wolfson Research Professor at the University of Leicester, where he was awarded his DSc in 2004. He is also a member of Academia Europaea and of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
