Flight Of The Intruder (1991)
US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - air squadron commander: I know what you hit. The air force knows what you hit. So does CTF 77, so does General Giap and the entire World Communist Union. But no one's going to admit it. So far as this navy's concerned, you didn't kill a rat! Face forward, mister. I'm just starting.

[04:56:10] BERMAN: Series of close encounters between Russian fighter jet and a U.S. destroyer in the Baltic Sea raising tensions now between the super powers.
I want to show you this video released by the navy. An unarmed Russian jet conducted a simulated defensive move came within feet of the USS Donald Cook Tuesday night. One U.S. military official described the drill as the most aggressive action taken by the Russians in recent memory. You look at the pictures, you just wonder what was going on there.
I want to go live to Moscow and bring in CNN's Matthew Chance with the very latest.
Matthew, what do the Russians say about this?
MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Well, it has been some time, John, before they gave any reaction, but within the past hour, they issued a statement, the Russian defense minister that is, saying essentially this, that all flights by planes from the Russian air force are completed in strict compliance with international law in territory over international waters.
So, they are denying any kind of wrongdoing on the part of the Russian aircraft or pilots in those aircrafts on this occasion. Even though those images clearly show that the Russian warplane SU-24 came in close proximity to the USS Donald Cook, as some report saying as close 30 feet. It left ripples on the waves in the Baltic Sea as it whooshed passed.
So, it's an extraordinary close encounter of the military kind and one that U.S. officials, of course, say, it was irresponsible and could have caused, if an incident military, it could have caused an accident of some kind and they are considering, I understand, whether or not to make a formal protest.
BERMAN: It is flat out provocative. And, of course, both the U.S. and Russian military are operating in that area. Explain why.
CHANCE: Yes, because the sea, the Baltic Sea, is essentially the stretch of water which has become the frontline between the NATO states of the Baltics, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and places like that, and Russia. And, of course, since 2014 with the conflict over Ukraine and the Russian annexation of Crimea, there's been a lot of animosity, a lot of tension again Cold War-style between the Russians and the NATO military alliance. So, this is one of the areas where the two forces come into contact.
It's actually not the first time this has happened to the "USS Donald Cook." In 2014, in another stretch of water, the Black Sea, almost exactly the same thing happened. It was buzzed by an SU-24 at very close range before. So, this kind of thing happens unfortunately quite a lot.

Russia denies reckless behaviour in US warship flyby
Maria Antonova with Thomas Watkins in Washington
April 14, 2016
Moscow (AFP) - Russia denied Thursday its fighter jets were engaged in reckless or provocative behaviour when they flew just metres from a US destroyer in international waters in the Baltic Sea, exacerbating tensions between the rival powers.
The aircraft repeatedly buzzed the USS Donald Cook this week, including an incident on Tuesday when a Russian Su-24 jet flew 30 feet (nine metres) above the ship in a "simulated attack profile," the US military's European Command said.
Ties between Russia and the West have plunged to their lowest point since the Cold War over Moscow's 2014 annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Kiev and its support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.
One US defence official called the actions of the Russian planes "more aggressive than anything we've seen in some time".
The destroyer's commanding officer Charles Hampton told journalists in Lithuania that "very low, very fast" flybys were "inconsistent with the professional norms of militaries in international waters or international airspace".
- 'Sore reaction' -
Russia countered the criticism, insisting it had observed all safety regulations.
Su-24 planes were conducting test flights in the area and "having observed the ship, turned away in observance of all safety measures," Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement on the ministry's Facebook page.
"Frankly speaking, we don't understand such a sore reaction from our US colleagues," the statement added.

US Navy Ship Encounters Aggressive Russian Aircraft in Baltic Sea
Story Number: NNS160413-20Release Date: 4/13/2016 3:48:00 PM
By Headquarters, United States European Command
STUTTGART, Germany (NNS) -- A United States Navy destroyer operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea experienced several close interactions by Russian aircraft April 11 and 12.
USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) encountered multiple, aggressive flight maneuvers by Russian aircraft that were performed within close proximity of the ship.
On April 11, Donald Cook was conducting deck landing drills with an allied military helicopter when two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes at approximately 3 p.m. local. One of the passes, which occurred while the allied helicopter was refueling on the deck of Donald Cook, was deemed unsafe by the ship's commanding officer. As a safety precaution, flight operations were suspended until the SU-24s departed the area.
On April 12, while Donald Cook was operating in international waters in the Baltic Sea, a Russian KA-27 Helix helicopter conducted circles at low altitude around the ship, seven in total, at approximately 5 p.m. local. The helicopter passes were also deemed unsafe and unprofessional by the ship's commanding officer. About 40 minutes following the interaction with the Russian helicopter, two Russian SU-24 jets made numerous close-range and low altitude passes, 11 in total. The Russian aircraft flew in a simulated attack profile and failed to respond to repeated safety advisories in both English and Russian. USS Donald Cook's commanding officer deemed several of these maneuvers as unsafe and unprofessional.
Quotes:
"April 11-12, USS Donald Cook was operating in a professional manner in international waters conducting operations and exercises with our allies in the Baltic Sea."
"In my judgement these maneuvers in close proximity to Donald Cook are unprofessional and unsafe."
-Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Adm. Mark Ferguson
Quick Facts:
We have deep concerns about the unsafe and unprofessional Russian flight maneuvers. These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries and could result in a miscalculation or accident that could cause serious injury or death.
U.S. officials are using existing diplomatic channels to address the interactions while the incidents are also being reviewed through U.S. Navy channels.
