"My department has studied fuel consumption by military units as part of a program to increase the strategic fuel reserves, something neglected in past years. With savings in other consumption and certain industrial sacrifices, we might expand this to sixty days of war stocks, perhaps even seventy, plus giving you other stocks to expand training exercises. The near-term economic costs would be slight, but by midsummer this would change rapidly." Sergetov paused, greatly disturbed at how easily he had gone along with the unspoken decision. I have sold my soul ... Or have I acted like a patriot? Have I become like the other men around this table? Or have I merely told the truth - and what is truth?

MOSCOW —
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin says his first meeting with President Barack Obama went "very well."
The former Russian president called the two-hour meeting "substantive, informative and collaborative."
Putin told reporters he and Obama "covered the issues from previous years" and found "many positives" and "many points in common."
Obama also had good things to say about their meeting Tuesday

Not many people appreciated the importance of the videocassette recorder. A useful convenience for the home, to be sure, but not until a captain in the Royal Dutch Air Force had demonstrated a bright idea two years before had its battlefield utility been proven in secret exercises first in Germany, then in the Western United States.
NATO radar surveillance aircraft kept their customary position high over the Rhein. The E-3A Sentry aircraft, better known as AWACS, and the smaller, lesser-known TR-1, flew their missions in boring circles or straight lines far behind the fighting front. They had similar but different functions. The AWACS was mainly concerned with air traffic. The TR-1, an upgraded version of the venerable U-2, looked for vehicles on the ground. Initially the TR-1 had been something of a failure. Because it tracked too many targets, many of them immobile radar reflectors set everywhere by the Soviets, the NATO commanders had been deluged with information that was too distorted to use. Then came the VCR. All the data relayed from the aircraft was recorded on videotape anyway since it was a convienent medium for data storage, but the VCRs built into the NATO system possessed only a few operating features. The Dutch captain thought to bring his personal machine into his office, and demonstrated how by using fast forward and fast reverse, the radar data could be used to show not only where things were going, but also where they had come from. Computer support made the task easier by eliminating items that moved no more than once every two hours - thus erasing Russian radar lures - and there it was, a brand-new intelligence tool.

Witnesses say the gunman enters a village of tents, the residential heart of the weeklong retreat, and spots desperate individuals hoping he'll spare them if they run back inside their homes. But the killer is seen working his way tent by tent, shooting many point-blank, one by one.
5:20 p.m.:
Kaur joins a group of panicked, confused campers. They are running from the approaching gunman, his "POLICE" moniker crystal-clear to see from even middle distance.
"My first thought was: Why are the police shooting at us? What the hell?" she writes.
More than a dozen crowd into a dark corner of a camp building, and all lie down on the floor. She cries quietly — then sees her best friend from camp, a boy, through a window.
"I wondered if I should go out and bring him to me. I did not. I saw fear in his eyes," she writes.
5:25 p.m.:
Kaur says a burst of gunfire extremely close to the building triggers panic and the entire group leaps out of a far window. Several suffer injuries, including a girl with a broken ankle, but the shooter doesn't immediately pursue them. She takes new cover behind a low brick wall, telephones her mother on her cell phone, and sends a text to her father.
"Many were there," she writes. "I prayed, prayed, prayed. I hope that God saw me."
5:30 p.m.:
As the gunman picks off lone campers who run from their hiding spots as he draws near, many find themselves at the shoreline with only one apparent escape route — the water.
Kaur says the gunman tries to draw out the hiders near the brick wall, shouting, "I'm from the police!" Campers shout back, "Prove it!" He shoots at those who move. She lies still, on top of the legs of a teenage girl covered in blood.

IN THE space of 48 hours Anders Behring Breivik emerged from the obscurity of an Oslo suburb to become the worst mass killer in peacetime Europe.
Breivik was born on February 13, 1979 and grew up in western Oslo where, until recently, he lived with his mother in the wealthy suburb of Skoyen. Superficially, his upbringing appears to have been both middle-class and unremarkable. He attended the Handelsgym High School in Oslo and graduated with a masters degree from the Oslo School of Management.
In his late teens, he completed compulsory national service, where he received military training and learnt how to shoot.

Nellie Connally, who died on Saturday aged 87, was in President John F Kennedy's limousine when he was assassinated in November 1963; as the widow of John Connally, the Governor of Texas, she was the last living person who had been part of that fateful drive through downtown Dallas.
As the limousine carrying the Connallys and the Kennedys wound its way through the crowds lining Dealey Plaza, Nellie Connally turned to President Kennedy, who was in a seat behind her, and said: "Mr President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you."
Almost immediately, she heard the first of what she later concluded were three gunshots in quick succession. Nellie Connally turned to see Kennedy clutch his throat. As she turned again to look at her husband, he was hit in the back by a bullet. In pulling him close to her, she staunched a wound in his chest the size of an orange. Doctors said this action had probably saved his life.
She later said the most enduring image of that day was the bloodstained roses. "It's the image of yellow roses and red roses and blood all over the car… all over us," she said in an interview in 2003. "I'll never forget it. It was so quick and so short, so potent."
Idanell Brill, always known as Nellie, was born on February 24 1919. She met her husband at the University of Texas in Austin, and they married in 1940.

In World War II, a group of raw recruits join the U.S. Marines. They come from all walks of life and go through boot camp together. After basic training, and are sent to Camp Elliott and the 2nd Battalion of the 6th Marines commanded by Major Sam Huxley. His job is now to make them into an effective fighting unit. They leave family and girlfriends behind but soon meet new people, fall in love and fall out of love. In November 1942, they shipped out arriving first in New Zealand for advanced training and from there on to Guadalcanal. Tarawa is their next mission but Huxley has to pull strings to get his battalion into front line action. He gets his wish with the invasion of Saipan.

The U.S. Coast Guard had helicopters, boats and a plane searching a 900-nautical-square-mile section of the Gulf of Mexico near the mobile offshore drilling unit Deepwater Horizon, which burst into flames after an explosion around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
