I can't help but remember y'all.

Christmas Broadcast 1991

In 1952, when I first broadcast to you at Christmas, the world was a very different place to the one we live in today.

Only seven years had passed since the end of the most destructive wars in the history of mankind. Even the end of the hostilities did not bring the true peace for which so many had fought and died. What became known as the 'Cold War' sustained an atmosphere of suspicion, anxiety and fear for many years.

Then, quite suddenly, everything began to change, and the changes have happened with bewildering speed. In 1989 the Berlin Wall came down. Since then the rest of the world has watched, fascinated, as oppressive regimes have crumbled under popular pressure.

One by one, these liberated peoples have taken the first hesitant, and sometimes painful, steps towards open and democratic societies.

Naturally, we welcome this, and it may be that we can help them achieve their aims. But, in doing that, we need to remind ourselves of the essential elements which form the bedrock of our own free way of life - so highly valued and so easily taken for granted.

This can be an opportunity to reflect on our good fortune, and on whether we have anything to offer by way of example to those who have recently broken free of dictatorship. We, who claim to be of the free world, should examine what we really mean by freedom, and how we can help to ensure that, once in place, it is there to stay.

There are all sorts of elements to a free society, but I believe that among the most important is the willingness of ordinary men and women to play a part in the life of their community, rather than confining themselves to their own narrow interests.

The parts they play may not be major ones - indeed they can frequently turn out to be thankless tasks. The wonder is, though, that there are so many who are prepared to devote much of their lives, for no reward, to the service of their fellow men and women.

Without their dedication, where would our churches and charities be, for instance? Without such people, many would be unable to enjoy the pleasure which the arts bring to our daily lives.

Governments can encourage and support, but it is the volunteers who work away for nothing in administration or spend their weekends seeing fair play, who make sport and physical recreation so worthwhile.

I am constantly amazed by the generosity of donors and subscribers, great and small, who give so willingly and often towards the enjoyment of others. Without them these voluntary organisations simply would not exist.

The peoples of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe have broken the mould of autocracy. I hope that we will be able to help them as they learn that the democracy which has replaced it depends, not on political structures, but on the goodwill and the sense of responsibility of each and every citizen.

It is not, of course, as simple as that. All the selfless voluntary work in the world can be wasted if it disregards the views and aspirations of others. There are any number of reasons to find fault with each other, with our Governments, and with other countries.

But let us not take ourselves too seriously. None of us has a monopoly of wisdom and we must always be ready to listen and respect other points of view.

At the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Zimbabwe this autumn, we saw an example of mutual tolerance and respect for the views of others on an international scale. Leaders of the fifty nations came together to discuss the future.

They met in peace, they talked freely, they listened, they found much on which to agree, and they set a new direction for the Commonwealth. I am sure that each derived strength and reassurance in the process.

That was just one event in a year of massive and historic change. This time last year we were thinking of the servicemen and women in the Gulf, and of the hostages in captivity. Our prayers for their safe homecoming have largely been answered.

This Christmas we can take heart in seeing how, in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, where it has endured years of persecution and hardship, the Christian faith is once again thriving and able to spread its message of unselfishness, compassion and tolerance.

Next February will see the fortieth anniversary of my father's death and of my Accession. Over the years I have tried to follow my father's example and to serve you as best I can.

You have given me, in return, your loyalty and your understanding, and for that I give you my heartfelt thanks. I feel the same obligation to you that I felt in 1952. With your prayers, and your help, and with the love and support of my family, I shall try to serve you in the years to come.

May God bless you and bring you a Happy Christmas.

Pegasus

Damnit, I know I wrote several times about that woman in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. On 27 June 2004 when I crossed the finish line of that 2.4 mile swim course and 112 mile bicycle course and 26.2 mile running course she was one of two women who were apparently volunteers who were assigned to escort the course finishers away from the finish line and towards the exit area for the course finishers. On the website for the Ironman Coeur d'Alene 2004 triathlon I later watched the video that company, a racketeering organization famously associated with the State of Hawaii, and I could clearly see the video of where she put her hand on my chest. After they escorted me out of the finish line area and directed me to a tent where she told me I could find pizza, which I did but that wasn't as appetizing as it sounded, she made the comment about how she knew I did not want to be there and I responded about how I did want to be there. I was standing there about 11:20 PM in my Nike Pegasus running shoes, after walking much of the marathon course, and the day was 27 June 2004.

Prisoner of War Medal

The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the United States armed forces which was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on 8 November 1985. The United States Code citation for the POW Medal statute is 10 U.S.C. § 1128.

The Prisoner of War Medal may be awarded to any person who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, (the date of the United States entry into World War I was the 6th). It is awarded to any person who was taken prisoner or held captive while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing Armed Force; or while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. As of an amendment to Title 10 of the United States Code in 1989, the medal is also awarded for captivity by foreign armed forces that are hostile to the United States, under circumstances which the Secretary concerned finds to have been comparable to those under which persons have generally been held captive by enemy armed forces during periods of armed conflict. The person's conduct, while in captivity, must have been honorable. This medal may be awarded posthumously to the surviving next of kin of the recipient.

Warrant Officer (United States)

In the United States military, the rank of Warrant Officer (grade W-1 to W-5) is rated as an officer above the senior-most enlisted ranks, as well as officer cadets and candidates, but below the officer grade of O-1 (NATO: OF-1). Warrant officers are highly skilled, single-track specialty officers, and while the ranks are authorized by Congress, each branch of the Uniformed Services selects, manages, and utilizes warrant officers in slightly different ways.

1993

I arranged for Kerry Burgess and her to meet. Deputy US Marshal Kerry Burgess had been shot in the shoulder by gunfire from a fugitive in 1993 and she was caring for him in the months as he recovered from the injury.

The fugitive was killed by the return gunfire from Deputy US Marshal Kerry Burgess.

In an artificial memory that I just now thought of, prompted by observations I make here, I have a "memory" of traveling from Greenville South Carolina to a seminar in Sacremento California. The seminar was about computerized medical billing. I was there for two or three days. I very clearly remember one of those days while I was there at the seminar that I looked down and was annoyed to see that my ink pen in my left shirt pocket under my suit jacket had started to leak ink and had ruined my shirt. I seem to recall thinking about this sometime in what seems to be the near-past and I think I was trying to remember or I did remember that the ink pen was leaking red ink onto my white shirt. I also remember, as seems important to this observation, that I was flying back to Greenville after the seminar was over and I bought a Mickey Mouse doll for my girlfriend's daughter, as I think that was before her mother and I married, and I left that Mickey Mouse doll on the seat next to me in the waiting area before boarding the airplane. I was sitting on the airplane and one of the flight attendants called out over the intercom and announced that someone had left a Mickey Mouse doll on the seat outside and I reached up to press the button above me to call her over and I told her that was mine. She might have not mentioned it was a Mickey Mouse doll or something, now that I think about it but I really do not remember specifically what was our dialog. She gave me to the Mickey Mouse doll and I later gave it to my girlfriend's daughter.

Number Six: What are you doing?

Baltar: Phoning my attorney.

Number Six: That won't be necessary.

Baltar: Nah, he'll know what to do. He'll sort this out. He's the best in the business.

Number Six: It won't be necessary because in a few hours no one will be left to charge you with anything.

Baltar: Do you have any idea what they'll do to me if they find out?

Six: They'd probably charge you with treason.

Baltar: Treason is punishable by the death penalty. This is unbelievable.

Six: What are you doing?

Baltar: I'm phoning my attorney.

Six: That won't be necessary.

Baltar: Yeah, he'll know what to do, he'll sort this out. He's the best in the business.

Next is a ceremonial fly-by by the last Galactica battle squadron led by Captain Lee Adama. (Music play, ships fly over, people applaud.) And now it is my great pleasure to introduce the last commander of the Battlestar Galactica, Commander Adama. (applause)

Adama: Thank you very much. The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of wearing the uniform can be high, but... (pauses)

Nazi propaganda

Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media, was skillfully used by the Nazi Party in the years leading up to and during Adolf Hitler's leadership of Germany (1933–1945). Nazi propaganda provided a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power, and for the implementation of their policies, including the pursuit of total war and the extermination of millions of people in the Holocaust.

The Cylon War is long over, yet we must not forget the reasons why so many sacrificed so much in the cause of freedom. The cost of wearing the uniform can be high but... [ very long pause ] Sometimes it's too high. You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question, why? Why are we as a people worth saving? We still commit murder because of greed, spite, jealousy. And we still visit all of our sins upon our children. We refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done. Like we did with the Cylons. We decided to play God, create life. When that life turned against us, we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it really wasn't our fault, not really. You cannot play God then wash your hands of the things that you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you've done anymore.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: No, sir. Thank you, sir.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Why don't you sit down? Congratulations on making Captain. Sorry I wasn't there.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: Thank you, sir.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: How's your mother?

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: Getting married.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Good for her. We spoke about a year ago. Had a real heart-to-heart. It was good.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: I'm glad to hear that, sir. Will that be all?

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Why don't you talk to me, Lee?

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: What do you want to talk about?

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Anything. You've been here for an hour.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: Well, I don't have anything to say. My orders said report here and participate in the ceremony. So I'm - I'm here, and I'm going to participate in the ceremony. There wasn't anything in my orders about having any heart-to-heart chats with the Old Man.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Accidents happen in the service.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: Dad, listen, I -

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: You know all the things that you talked to me about at the funeral -

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: I really don't want to do this!

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: They still ring in my ears after two years.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: Good! Good. Because - because you know what? They were meant to.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: Zak had a choice. You both did.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: "A man isn't a man until he wears the wings of a Viper pilot." Doesn't that sound at all familiar to you?

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: That's not fair, son.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: No, it's not fair. Because one of us wasn't cut out to wear the uniform.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: He earned his wings, just like we all did.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: One of us wasn't cut out to be a pilot. One of us wouldn't have made it into flight school if his old man, his daddy, hadn't pulled the strings!

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: That's an exaggeration. I did nothing for him that I wouldn't have done for anyone else.

Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama - Colonial Fleet Viper pilot: You're not even listening to me. Why - why can't you get this through your head? Zak did not belong in that plane! He shouldn't have been there. He - he was only doing it for you. Face it. You killed him.

Commander William Adama - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica Commanding Officer: That'll be all, Captain.

ON THIS DAY 23 November

1984: London tube fire traps hundreds

Almost 1,000 passengers were trapped in smoke-filled tunnels for three hours after a fire at London's busiest underground station, Oxford Circus.

Emergency services arrived at Oxford Circus within minutes of the blaze breaking out. There were no deaths and only minor injuries.

But the damage caused was substantial, and it is expected to be many days before normal service resumes at the station.

The cause of the fire, which started at about 2220 GMT in a tunnel connecting the northbound Bakerloo and Victoria lines, is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault on a train or in tunnel cabling.

Five tube trains - packed with people returning from the West End - were trapped in the fire and had to be driven slowly back to Tottenham Court Road and Green Park stations, where ambulances were waiting.

People started to panic when they realised they could not get out

Baltar: (Walking outdoors with Number Six) It may interest you to know that the final results of the CMP project are working close to 95% efficiency throughout the fleet. Hold your applause, please.

Six: No applause for me? I doubt you would have ever completed the project without me.

Baltar: Yes, well, you helped a bit.

Six: I rewrote half your algorithms.

Baltar: All right, you were extremely helpful, but let's not forget, you got something out of it. All that poking around inside the defense mainframe. Should give you a huge advantage bidding for the contract next year.

Six: You know that's not really why I did it.

Baltar: No, you did it cause you love me.

Six: That, and God wanted me to help you.

Baltar: Right, he spoke to you, did he? You had a chat?

Six: He didn't speak to me in a literal voice, and you don't have to mock my faith.

Baltar: Sorry. I'm just not very religious.

Six: Does it bother you that I am?

Baltar: It puzzles me that an intelligent and attractive woman such as yourself should be taken in by all that mysticism and superstition. But, I'm willing to overlook it on account of your other attributes. (They both smile. He tries to kiss her, but she pulls away.)

Six: I have to go. I'm meeting someone.

Baltar: Really? Who is he? I'm insanely jealous.

Six: I doubt that.

Baltar: So touchy today. Well, as a matter of fact, I'm meeting someone too. Business. A new project at Defense I might do. So, uh... (kisses her on the cheek) You'll call me later, right?

(He walks away. Six looks up.)

Six: It's about time. Wondered when you'd get here.

She's not having car trouble?
She's gonna be out all night with her science class at the observatory.
I know everything.
Yeah, hi, Doris. - What's this about a science class, Regina?

Well, you want me to do better in science, don't you?
I want you home in five minutes after you finish work.
If you wanna watch the comet, you can do it here.
Look, Doris. I have 18 years ...
Look, Doris. Like, I'm 18, okay, and I can watch the comet wherever I want to watch the comet.
Here, Samantha, you and your sister share a lot of secrets.
I want you to share this one with her.
If it were up to me, I couldn't care less what she did.
But if your father makes it back home without some Sandinista
blowing his brains out,

he's gonna hold me responsible for any kind of trouble
you two girls get into.
What we have here is a chain of command.
The Major jumps on me, I jump on you.
Did you get that? Okay.
- Now, are you going to join the party? - Join the party for what Doris?
So I can watch Chuck from across the street
stick his hands down your pants?
I think that's something Daddy should know.
Chuck's a nice guy. He's certainly nice to be with

while Daddy's down in Banana Land.
You were born with an asshole, Doris. You don't need Chuck.
Looks like a real nice crowd we have out here tonight.

Capt. Ross: Hey, Danny! Great job today. The redirect on Barnes.

Kaffee: I have Markinson.

Capt. Ross: Where is he?

Kaffee: Motel room in North East with six federal marshalls outside his door. Take a sip of your drink.

[to waitress]

Kaffee: The transfer order that Markinson signed is a phony. Jessup's statement that the 6am flight was the first available is a lie. We're checking the tower chief's log. I'd like a beer, please. In the mean time I thought we'd put the Apostle John Kendrick on the stand and see if we can't have a little fun.

Capt. Ross: Alright. I have an obligation to tell you that if you accuse Kendrick or Jessup of any crime without proper evidence then you're going to be subject to a court martial for professional misconduct and that is something that's going to be stapled to every job application that you ever fill out. Markinson's not going to hold up, Danny, he's a crazy man! Now, I'm not telling you this to intimidate you I'm being your lawyer here.

Kaffee: Oh, thanks, Jack. And I want to tell you that I think the whole fucking bunch of you are certifiably insane. This code of honor of yours makes me want to beat the shit out of something.

Capt. Ross: Don't you dare lump me in with Jessup and Kendrick just because we wear the same uniform.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Miniseries (2003)

Intercom: Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain. Welcome aboard. We are on route to Galactica, and our estimated flight time is approximately five and a half hours. Please sit back and relax, and enjoy your flight.

(Alone in the bathroom, Roslin gasps, pulls at her shirt, puts a hand over her heart.)

(And we're back on land. Caption: Riverwalk Market, Caprica City. It's crowded with people and we see the blonde woman (Number Six) from the first scene. She touches some flowers, eyes some drinks, finally stops and looks down at a baby in a carriage. The baby's mother walks over, touches the carriage protectively.)

Six: How small they are.

Mom: I know. But they grow up so fast.

Six: May I?

Mom: (smiling, but a little uncomfortable) Sure. (She picks up the baby and hands her to Number Six. The baby starts crying.)

Six: So light. So fragile. Shhhh. (She touches the baby's face.) There, there. It's okay. You're not gonna have to cry much longer.

Mom: We really should be going. (Takes the baby back.)

Six: Of course. (The woman puts the baby back in the carriage.) It's amazing how the neck can support that much weight.

Man in the crowd: Chantara! Honey, let's go! (waves at the woman - she moves off to talk to him) I've got to show you something.

Mom: Okay! (They talk at each other in the background. Six leans down, and there's a quiet snapping noise. When the woman turns back around, she's walking away in the distance. The woman leans down to check on the baby.) Oh my god. He's not breathing! He's not breathing!

(Number Six walks away, looking upset.)

Clinton Team Picks Apart Jones's Life

By Peter Baker and Lorraine Adams

Washington Post Staff Writers

Monday, February 23, 1998; Page A01

The 11th-floor New York Avenue law offices with a strategic view of Washington's majestic landmarks are a fair distance from the one-stoplight town of Lonoke, Ark. But these days there is little about Lonoke's most famous native daughter that is not known in the polished suites of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Piece by piece, President Clinton's top-dollar legal team has taken apart the life of Paula Jones, examining topics from her job history to her possible sex partners. They turned up a check she bounced when reimbursing the Arkansas government for personal calls made on state phones. They found previous employers who fired her for tardiness or other reasons. They scoured personnel records and discovered she typed only 24 words per minute and scored 121 out of 174 on an Arkansas state clerical examination.

Venturing into more salacious territory, they interviewed as many as a half-dozen men who claimed to have had sex with her, including some who said they met her casually at parties or bars and then engaged in quick encounters, according to people close to the case. One former boss signed an affidavit alleging that she pursued him at work and that they slept together. After their short-lived relationship ended, he fired her -- in part, he said, because she dressed too provocatively.

Now that the lawyers essentially have finished gathering evidence and made the final pretrial effort to get Jones's sexual harassment lawsuit thrown out, a picture has emerged of who the president's defense team is and where it is headed. Led by veterans of past high-profile political cases, the Clinton legal squad is following an aggressive and political risky strategy centered on Jones herself. After all the attention focused on a president linked by fact or rumor to a host of women -- most recently and most perilously Monica S. Lewinsky -- Clinton's lawyers hope to turn the spotlight with blinding intensity on the life of his most persistent accuser.

"Does her story make sense? It's always been our position to point out why it doesn't make sense," said Mitchell S. Ettinger, a Clinton attorney. "No one's going to argue they weren't in a room together. And you don't have to call her a complete liar. But everything she's said -- about her injuries to her job, her reactions to this, her reasons for filing suit -- it's not going to add up."
