United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 185 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure, and in many cases got lost in the high field of corn adjacent to the runway until rescue workers arrived on the scene and escorted them to safety.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

Bernard Paul Coy was a convicted bank robber involved in the most famous, and violent, escape ever attempted at Alcatraz Prison, resulting in the deaths of three would-be escapees and two prison guards.
A career criminal, Coy was sentenced in 1937 to 25 years in federal prison for bank robbery. Transferred to Alcatraz from Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in 1938, his good behavior earned him a position as cell-house orderly, which gave him access to most of the main cell block. He noticed a weakness in the iron bars that protected the gun gallery from which armed guards overlooked the cell block. He informed fellow inmates Joseph Paul Cretzer, Marvin Hubbard, Miran Edgar Thompson, Sam Shockley and Clarence Carnes about what he had found, and they devised an escape plan whereby they would break into the gun gallery, steal the guards' weapons, take them hostage and then flee to the island's dock, from which they would escape across the bay to San Francisco.
The escape was planned for May 2, 1946. On that day Shockley distracted the gun-gallery guard by reporting a phony incident that drew the guard to Shockley's cell. Coy had devised a primitive but effective bar spreader that enabled him to pry apart the weak protective bars on the gun gallery, and when the guard returned from Shockley's cell, Coy overpowered him and took his weapons. Soon they had taken nine guards hostage and confined them in two cells. Unfortunately, there was one vital piece of equipment that was supposed to be in the guard's cage but wasn't: the key to the door that led out of the prison yard, from which the convicts had planned to run to the dock, seize the prison boat and escape across the bay. It turned out that one of the guards, contrary to regulations, had kept the key in order to let kitchen staff out of the yard instead of returning it to the gun gallery, so as not to disturb the gallery guard at lunch.
It wasn't long before prison authorities discovered what had happened and locked down the prison. The authorities would not negotiate with the would-be escapees and the convicts wouldn't give up their hostages or their weapons. Things deteriorated quickly, and a gun battle between the guards and the escapees ensued. The fight--known as "The Battle of Alcatraz"--went on for two days. At one point Cretzer ran up to the cells where the hostage guards were kept and opened fire, wounding five of them; one later died from his injuries. Thompson, Shockley and Carnes, realizing that there was no hope of escaping, returned to their cells, but Cretzer, Hubbard and Coy decided to shoot it out. They beat back an attempt by a squad of guards to capture them, killing one guard in the process. The warden then decided to avail himself of the services of a platoon of US Marines--led by Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, a hero in the Pacific Theater during World War II--stationed nearby.
A squad of guards mounted a rescue operation to save the hostages, and although the three convicts fired at them and wounded one, the hostages were rescued and taken out of the cell-block house. With no more hostages in the building, the Marines mounted a massive assault, involving machine guns, grenades and mortars. Squads of guards also attacked the cell-block house between barrages, unloading a constant fusillade against the convicts. The final assault took place on May 4, and the bodies of Coy, Cretzer and Hubbard were found in the rubble.

Ward Fowler, who plays the popular TV detective Inspector Lucerne, kills his agent because she is blackmailing him with the fact he was a draft dodger. He drugs his alcoholic studio gopher while they're watching a sports broadcast, tapes it, then goes to the deli where he knows his agent will be. Disguised as a thief with clothing from the studio wardrobe department, he pistol whips the owner, then shoots the agent and makes it look like a robbery. He then returns to his home, wakes up the gopher after resetting his watch, and plays back the tape so he has an alibi.
Columbo is on the scene. A big fan of Fowler's show, he immediately begins to notice certain discrepancies about the crime scene.

A 12-episode serial. The government of Marovania hires the wicked Boroff to manufacture a powerful gas that causes mass disintegration. Boroff is en route to Marovania with a boatload of arnatite to make the gas when his steamer runs aground off the California coast. Boroff soon commits a murder. The Coast Guard, led by Lt. Terry Kent, must hunt Boroff, figure out his plan and where the arnatite is, capture and dispose of any gas Boroff manages to make, and protect the safety of civilians, including Terry's special friend, ubiquitous reporter Jean Norman, and her chatty photographer, Snapper McGee.
