No charges against Bill Gates' dad in hit-and-run

SEATTLE —
The Seattle City Attorney's Office has decided not to press charges against Bill Gates' father after the community leader apologized for a hit-and-run collision and paid for damages.
According to documents obtained by KIRO-TV, the incident happened in August.
Investigators say they found Bill Gates Sr.'s Mercedes near Seattle Center, wedged against another car, with the engine running and the keys in the ignition.

On November 8th, 2010 off the coast of southern California, a contrail illuminated by the setting sun was captured on video by a television cameraman and aired on Los Angeles television station KCBS-TV. It appeared to be traveling toward the upper atmosphere and appeared to originate approximately 35 miles west of Los Angeles. Many news organizations described the sighting as an apparent missile launch.

Pentagon can't explain 'missile' off California

WASHINGTON —
The Pentagon said Tuesday it did not know what created a vapor trail that crossed the skies off the Southern California coast and resembled a missile launch.
Video posted on the CBS News website shows an object flying through the evening sky Monday that left a large contrail, or vapor trail. A news helicopter owned by KCBS, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, shot the video.
Pentagon officials were stumped by the event. "Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said.
While the vapor cloud captured on video resembled that created by a rocket in flight, military officials said they didn't know of any launches in the area.

Pacific Ocean (CBS 8)- A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught on video Monday evening by a KCBS news helicopter.
The spectacular contrail could easily be seen up in Los Angeles, but who launched this missile and why, remain a mystery for now.
The magnificent images were captured from the KCBS chopper around 5pm. The location of the missile was described as west of Los Angeles, north of Catalina Island, and approximately 35 miles out to sea.

Roy Baxter is concerned for his daughter Christina's safety. She's working as a doctor among the Masai in Kenya. Poaching gangs are slaughtering protected species, then raiding Masai villages and forcing them to help carry their ill-gotten gains across the border. Roy flies to Kenya to convince her to leave and becomes a suspect for murder when the village is raided and he tries to help a UN doctor shot by the raiders. The only witness is a young Masai boy, who is reluctant to come forward because of possible retribution against his tribe.

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court justices sharply questioned both sides today as lawyers argued whether Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against President Clinton should be delayed until after he leaves office.
Just one week before Clinton's second-term inauguration, the justices weighed whether Jones can pursue her claim now or must wait until the president becomes a private citizen in four years.
At one point, Justice Antonin Scalia said arguments by Clinton's lawyers that a lawsuit would take up too much of the president's time were not "terribly persuasive."
"We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood . . . and so forth," Scalia said. "The notion that he doesn't have a minute to spare is not credible."

TOKYO - After weeks of trying to prevent the Japanese public from panicking about the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the government now has the opposite problem: Worries have faded so much that people are slipping back into the evacuation zone.
Yukio Edano, the chief secretary of Japan's cabinet, said this morning that beginning at midnight, no one would be allowed to enter the 12-mile zone around the reactors without official permission. He made the announcement after residents began returning to retrieve belongings from their homes and as local and foreign journalists began exploring the area.
Noriyuki Shikata, a senior government spokesman, had earlier issued an appeal asking people to stay out of the zone until the government gave legal force to an evacuation that had been voluntary until now. "The situation at Fukushima Daiichi is still not sufficiently stable," he said. The 12-mile zone around the reactors was imposed in stages in the 30 hours after the earthquake and tsunami March 11.

The government has also encouraged people to leave communities about 12-18 miles from the reactors as well as five towns farther away that happened to receive extra fallout because of wind and rain patterns.

Naval Station Everett is the United States Navy's most modern facility.[citation needed] It is located next to the marina area of the city of Everett, WA, 25 miles (40 km) north of Seattle. The Navy Support Complex is located between Marysville and Arlington, 11 miles north of the naval station. Naval Station (NAVSTA), Everett is located on the northeast side of Puget Sound. NAVSTA Everett was designed as a homeport for a US Navy Carrier Strike Group.

The German tourist lady seemed irritated by the reason for my visit. 'Hitler's Munich?' she said. 'Can't you write about something else? There are lots of other things to see.' That's certainly true, but to see Munich through the lens of the Third Reich is to reveal much about the terrible course of 20th Century history.
Hitler staged his 1923 putsch here. It was here that the Nazi party - and SS - were founded. And it was here that British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement, his infamous 1938 treaty with Hitler.
I was travelling with London-based writer Joachim von Halasz, who has produced a guidebook entitled Hitler's Munich - a comprehensive and solidly researched guide to Bavaria's most famous city.
Von Halasz is concerned that Munich is in danger of forgetting its dark past. Many of the Third Reich buildings have been demolished and their role in Hitler's rise to power erased from the history books. 'We must maintain physical contact with the past if we want to avoid repeating it,' he says.
Von Halasz has put together three walking tours that take in many sites linked to Hitler. You'll see the houses where he lived, the beer cellar where he founded the party and, if you're lucky, the room where Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement.
'But first,' says von Halasz, 'a spot of lunch. We'll go to Osteria Italiana.' This old-style restaurant, now serving top-class Italian fare, was once called the Osteria Bavaria. In the early Thirties, when Hitler was living in Munich, he dined here with his political friends and they would discuss how to 'rescue' Germany.
It was also at this restaurant that - in 1935 - he met Unity Mitford, daughter of Lord Redesdale, whose sister, Diana, was married to the British fascist leader Oswald Mosley. Unity went on to become a close friend of Hitler and secretly wished to marry him. When war broke out between Britain and Germany in 1939, she shot herself in the head in Munich's Englischer Garten.
Her suicide attempt failed and Unity was discreetly taken back to England.
'The restaurant has hardly changed since Hitler's time,' says Osteria's head waiter. 'If he walked in, he'd recognise it immediately.' Despite today's Italian menu, the place exudes old-world Bavarian charm. The wood-panelled walls are painted with classical scenes, the dining rooms are dark, warm and filled with the smells of home cooking.
Many of the key events associated with Hitler's ascendance occurred in restaurants and beer cellars that are still open to the public. Most famous of all, perhaps, is the Hofbrauhaus beer hall in the centre of town. This enormous tavern, which can house 5,000 drinkers, provided the launch pad for the Nazi party. On February 24, 1920, Hitler presented his 25-point manifesto here to an audience of 2,000 supporters.

The Munich Post: Its undiscovered effects on Hitler

Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party rigorously censored the news and media immediately after Hitler gained power in Germany in 1933 and throughout World War II. This extensive censorship made it impossible for any newspaper to stop or even obstruct Hitler in his political journey to exterminate non-Aryans during this powerful reign. Therefore, when exploring any newspapers’ effects on Hitler’s power, we should examine his coming to power rather than his reign of power. Little consideration and little research have been dedicated to finding his powerful opponents in both the early 1920s and early 1930s. These time periods are important, especially in recognizing and foreshadowing Hitler’s actions and belief system or the way he got power in the first place.
Following World War I, Germany was in political chaos, especially in Munich, the political center of Bavaria. Several political parties were active in the 1920s in Munich, where this virtual political chaos left the different parties all against each other. Some active and popular parties included the Social Democrats, known as the SPD, the Bavarian People’s Party, the BVP, and the Communist Party, the KPD. The National Socialist party, Hitler’s future Nazi party, abbreviated NSDAP, made “its appearance in the already crowded and confused political scene in Munich, the capital of Bavaria.”
Each party supported a different, yet sometimes overlapping, future for Germany. Important parts of each political party were the propaganda and publishing of the party’s opinions through its newspaper. Accordingly, the most influential parties had public newspapers in which they expressed the views of their parties while defaming other politics and parties. The Volkischer Beobachter was the official NSDAP newspaper, and Hitler owned all shares of the paper and the Franz-Eher Publishing House by November 1921, giving Hitler power and control over the publications of the newspaper. Hitler used this newspaper to give “ideological clarification and interpretation to current political issues.” The control of the newspaper served as inhibitor of uncontrolled discussion and disunity among members of the NSDAP. There was no representation of the middle-class Left in the Bavarian Press, but there were important Marxist papers. The Social Democrats were considered Marxist in their views of non-revolutionary peaceful democracy. Among the important newspapers, the SPD’s Munich Post was “far and away the leader among these sheets.” The Bayerisches Wochenblatt was the sister organ of this main SPD newspaper in Bavaria. The socialist newspapers, especially the Munich Post because of its location in the hot spot of Bavaria and its relentless editors, specifically aimed its attention to Hitler, the odd man rising to power in the NSDAP.
The Munich Post’s open opposition against Hitler lasted a dozen years, and “produced some of the sharpest, most penetrating insights into his character, his mind and method, then or since.” These journalists were the first to focus sustained critical attention on Hitler, from the very first moment he emerged from the beer-hall backrooms to take to the streets of Munich in the early 1920s. According to Ron Rosenbaum in Explaining Hitler, “they were the first to tangle with him, the first to ridicule him, the first to investigate him, the first to expose the seamy underside of his party, the murderous criminal behavior masked by its pretensions to being a political movement. They were the first to attempt to alert the world to the nature of the rough beast slouching towards Berlin.” All these firsts imply that the Munich Post was effective in instigating opposition against Hitler. The Munich Post made the strong effort to report news on Hitler and often referred to the NSDAP as “Hitler’s party,” reminding its readers that the crimes committed by the Nazi party were the personal responsibility of this one man and his criminal politics. However, the Munich Post’s effect on the general public may have been less intense than its effect on important party leaders. Although it did publish attacks on Hitler and the NSDAP, the public reaction to these articles, and not just what the articles said, must be considered when giving the Munich Post recognition as an influential newspaper. The Munich Post’s readers were mainly avid Social Democrats, so the publishing of these sort of stories may not have had such a drastic effect on the general public. Rosenbaum dismisses the political upheaval in Bavaria at the time that may have lead the Munich Post to be so oppositional to Hitler, simply stating the Munich Post’s “opposition to Hitler grew initially out of ideology” (since the Munich Post was founded and sponsored by the Bavarian Social Democratic Party), but its “struggle with Hitler became extremely personal.” It was not this simple; other newspapers in other parts of the country were also aware of and exposed Hitler’s “seamy underside”, and the government regulated his activities to an extent as well. The effectiveness of the Munich Post on Hitler needs to be examined through the content and tone of the actual articles published, Hitler’s reaction to these articles, international news of the events the Munich Post was covering, and comparison of the Post’s coverage to other newspapers’. The Munich Post was distinctively active in two time periods, the early 1920s, when Hitler was just emerging on the political scene, and in the early 1930s, after his imprisonment, when he achieved actual authoritative power in Germany.
Early 1920s
Hitler’s ambitious attitude and extraordinary genius for public speaking gained him attention. Hitler spoke for the first time at a public meeting on October 16, 1919. At this time, the NSDAP was a weak party, and few regulars attended the meetings. This meeting at which Hitler spoke was the first to be publicly advertised, with an ad in the Munchener Beobachter. The idea and ambition behind this ad is credited to Hitler. His popularity at the first meeting, where he boasted he spoke over his allotted time, was the success of his first public speech, and initiated his further insistence on bigger audiences at NSDAP meetings. On February 24, 1920, at the bequeath of Hitler himself, the NSDAP staged its first great mass meeting. The NSDAP quickly turned into one of the most aggressive, vindictive and violent political organizations in Germany, including citizen’s militia, paramilitary forces, and an underground system. They advocated “brute force” against their enemies, and as early as September 1920 were documented as physically throwing their opposition out of assembly halls. Hitler was the main spokesperson for the party at these meetings, and to the Munich public, by 1921 Hitler was the NSDAP.

On November 8th, 2010 off the coast of southern California, a contrail illuminated by the setting sun was captured on video by a television cameraman and aired on Los Angeles television station KCBS-TV. It appeared to be traveling toward the upper atmosphere and appeared to originate approximately 35 miles west of Los Angeles. Many news organizations described the sighting as an apparent missile launch.

Mathias: Be different when the balloon goes up. Explosions, shooting, chaos. There's gonna be some panic out there.
