CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The shuttle Discovery's five astronauts slept in orbit 300 miles above Earth today after a nighttime launch that sent the spacecraft thundering along the East Coast and into orbit.
The astronauts and ground controllers early today successfully completed testing a complex research satellite that scientists hope will tell them where and why Earth's ozone layer is shrinking.
The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, to be released into orbit by Discovery, is a $740 million effort to study Earth's deteriorating ozone layer and other stratospheric elements.

The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) was a NASA-operated orbital observatory whose mission was to study the Earth’s atmosphere, particularly the protective ozone layer. The 5 900 kg (13,000-lb) satellite was deployed from Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-48 mission on September 15, 1991. It entered orbit at an operational altitude of 600 kilometres (370 mi), with an orbital inclination of 57 degrees.
The original mission duration was to be only three years, but was extended several times. When the mission ended in June 2005 due to funding cuts, 14 years after the satellite's launch, six of its ten instruments were still operational. Nonetheless, UARS was decommissioned and a final orbit-lowering burn was performed in early December 2005. On October 26, 2010, the International Space Station performed a debris-avoidance maneuver in response to a conjunction with UARS.
The decommissioned satellite re-entered the atmosphere on September 24, 2011, with considerable media attention

Karen is dragged away by harnessed children at the hospital and Hal is left behind. He witnessed a group of harnessed children get executed by a firing squad. He's allowed to go back to his father as a messenger, delivering the message to the resistance group that their actions have consequences.
At camp, Dr. Harris is able to remove the needles that hold the harness to the body. Rick is given drugs in order to counteract the drugs that the Aliens have been transmitting through the harness. The removal went well but Rick is not awake yet. Tom speaks with Dr. Harris and blames him for his wife's death. Dr. Harris had abandoned his wife, Rebecca, and the food when the attacks started that morning. Dr. Harris thinks that because they are the last remaining humans on the planet, the group of individuals left with the resistance are the best that man kind has to offer. Tom does not agree but he believes they owe it to everyone else to try their best.
Back in another room, the prisoner of war opens his eyes and Rick wakes up from surgery.

According to my well-worn copy of the Oxford Book of Days, January 13 is the end of Christmas in Norway and Sweden, Togo‘s day of national liberation, the holy day of Hilary of Poitiers, and the birthday of Society of Friends founder George Fox. That fine and serious-minded reference book does not record an anniversary, however, that will be meaningful for many millions of onetime children around the world: namely, the birth of a curious plastic disk that an adept spinner could sail into the heavens, whip around corners like a boomerang, and otherwise use to avoid pursuing gainful activity for many pleasant hours.
The original for the popular plastic disk was a pie tin—more specifically, a pie tin from the Frisbie Baking Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, which supplied many New England colleges with baked goods. Though they should have been studying, the students there found that the empty pie tins were good fun to toss around, and in time every dorm room had a “Frisbie” devoted to that purpose.
In the late 1940s, an alumnus and inventor who worked as a Los Angeles building inspector, Walter Morrison, built a plastic prototype of the familiar metal tin, thinking that the lighter object would fly farther. He patented what he called the Pluto Platter, then showed his gizmo to Rich Knerr and Arthur Melin, who had a little company they called Wham-O. Knerr and Melin—who would go on to market such faddish toys as the SuperBall and the Hula-Hoop—were enthusiastic, and they licensed Morrison’s patent.
On January 13, 1957, Wham-O began to produce its version of the Pluto Platter, called the Flying Disk, just in time for Sputnik and the UFO craze. Quite by chance, the Frisbie bakery closed that year. After hearing about the New England origins of Morrison’s invention, the company acquired the name and began to sell its product as the Frisbee. A couple of hundred million flying disks have since flown the world’s skies

Anthony Frederick Blunt (26 September 1907 – 26 March 1983), was a British art historian who was exposed as a Soviet spy late in his life.
Blunt was Professor of the History of Art at the University of London, director of the Courtauld Institute of Art, Surveyor of the King's Pictures and London. Known as Sir Anthony Blunt, KCVO between 1956 and 1979 (when he was stripped of his honours), he was exposed as a member of the Cambridge Five, a group of spies working for the Soviet Union from some time in the 1930s to at least the early 1950s.
Public exposure
Blunt's role was represented under the name Maurice in Andrew Boyle's book, Climate of Treason in 1979. Maurice was taken from the E. M. Forster novel of that name. Blunt tried to prevent the book being published, which was reported in the magazine Private Eye. This drew attention to Blunt. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher revealed Blunt's wartime role in the House of Commons firstly on Thursday 15 November 1979, and in more detail on 21 November. Sir Bernard Ingham, Thatcher's press secretary, suggested "I believe she did it because she didn't see why the system should cover things up. This was early in her Prime Ministership. I think she wanted to tell the Civil Service that the politicians decide policy, not the system. She wanted them to know who was boss."
