U.S. Investigating Ex-CIA Employee Named as Leak Source

With the security contractor and ex-CIA worker who revealed a once-secret U.S. electronic surveillance program having fled overseas, the government is investigating the leak and seeking to contain damage.
The Obama administration refused to say what it knows about Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old American and former technical assistant for the Central Intelligence Agency, or what steps it may take.
“There is, obviously, an investigation under way into this matter,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said today, declining to comment further when asked about Snowden, who provided the information about the surveillance program to journalists and revealed his identity voluntarily.
As lawmakers awaited briefings from administration officials, activists supporting Snowden announced the creation of a legal defense fund for him. They started a petition on the White House’s website calling him a “national hero” and seeking a pre-emptive pardon on his behalf.
Snowden was hiding in a Hong Kong hotel after leaving the U.S. on May 20, according to the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper.
An employee of defense contractor Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp (BAH)., Snowden worked at the National Security Agency for the past four years for various contractors, according to reports by the Guardian and the Washington Post, which said he provided them with documents about a program known as “PRISM,” which the government has now acknowledged.
Defending Program
Carney echoed remarks by President Barack Obama last week in defending the government’s collection of communications data, saying a balance between privacy protections and necessary intelligence gathering “has been appropriately struck.”
He referred questions about assessments of harm to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. “Revelations like this can be and have been damaging,” Carney said of national security leaks in general. “This information is classified for a reason.”

Green River case boosts Reichert name recognition

Five days after King County Sheriff Dave Reichert announced he was running for Congress as a Republican, his face last week reappeared in local newspapers and television sets.
Dressed in a formal uniform, Reichert was shown interrogating serial killer Gary L. Ridgway, the man he helped pursue for two decades and eventually brought to justice.
The Green River case has given Reichert the kind of name recognition a new candidate can't buy.
But political veterans caution it doesn't automatically translate into victory at the ballot box.
A reputation can grow stale if a candidate fails to outline a compelling stand on the issues and create an effective campaign machine. And voters could be turned off if there is any sign Reichert is trying to capitalize on such an infamous crime.
Politics is "littered with the bodies of candidates who were unable to convert notoriety into electability," said Seattle political consultant Mark Firmani, who is volunteering for Diane Tebelius, another Republican considering entering the race.
The release a week ago of hundreds of hours of videotaped interviews of Ridgway by investigators, including two days of one-on-one interrogations by Reichert, triggered the latest surge of news coverage.
Books are in the works or already have hit the presses. Television shows have aired recently and more are coming. Last week, the television show "60 Minutes II" ran a story about the case featuring Reichert.
Sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said the sheriff hasn't sought to orchestrate the publicity to benefit his campaign.
The date of the release of the latest Green River documents and video was set back in December, well before U.S. Rep. Jennifer Dunn announced on Jan. 30 that she would not seek re-election, opening the door for people like Reichert to enter the race.
Reichert didn't mention the Green River case when he announced his bid for Congress, though he repeatedly mentioned his law-enforcement background. Reichert last week announced he would not accept any money from book deals or other offers relating to the case while he is sheriff.
Nevertheless, the sheriff's name recognition could prove valuable in the outset.
"Being a hero is never a bad thing running for public office," said Chris Vance, state Republican Party chairman.

Sims Names Reichert Sheriff -- 25-Year Veteran To Take Command Monday

King County Executive Ron Sims today named Police Maj. Dave Reichert sheriff - Sims' first major appointment and apparently a popular one.
The announcement was met with cheers and applause from officers and family members who had packed a county conference room.
Stepping to the podium, an emotional Reichert looked in the direction of his wife and mother and paused to compose himself. Flanked by several of his officers, he said he was overwhelmed.
"This is an amazing honor," he said. "I can't express what this means to me."
His wife, Julie Reichert, then pinned his new sheriff's badge above medals of valor he'd received earlier in his career.

UNION, S.C. - The prosecution urged the jurors at the Susan Smith trial to hold on to their common sense in the weeks ahead, and they would come to see Smith as a selfish, malicious killer who sacrificed her children for the love of the son of a rich industrialist.
The defense begged them to look into their hearts and, through that softer focus, find a disturbed, childlike figure who, after a lifetime of sadness, snapped like a dry twig.
As simplistic as those opposing views might seem, they will be the crux of the next month of testimony in Smith's capital murder trial, which officially began Tuesday with opening statements in the elegant old Union County Courthouse.

That explains all the crazy behavior that has surrounded me for years. They think they are the one to wake me up. Some dumbass at Microsoft even said something like that to me at work one day. We were in some training class, I can’t remember the name of it, the instructor had used me to demonstrate something about not giving in to a salesperson or something where I was the person who was non-committal. Then we broke up into groups of three to practice and this one guy said something about making breakfast in bed for me. Earlier, another guy was telling me that he had been an Apache helicopter pilot.
