After 6 years of talking about crime, Members of Congress in both Houses from both parties overcame their partisan divisions and the false choices of the past to pass the toughest attack on crime in history. With a little good faith and an awful lot of hard work, both Democrats and Republicans took a stand against crime as the American people had demanded they do for years.

For all those Americans who want Washington to work for them, passing the crime bill shows we can break the stranglehold of politics-asusual and solve the problems you sent us all here to solve.

Crime and violence have been increasing for a long time. Too many law-abiding citizens have been killed on their streets and in their homes. Too many of our children have been terrified on their streets and in their schools. Too many police officers have been killed in the line of duty, too many families torn apart. But for 6 years, Washington just talked about the crime problem and failed to act. But this week, Congress acted. The special interests lost. The public interest won.

Seattle's dramatic new Central library opens May 23


Seattle's most talked-about event next month is the grand opening of the dramatic new Central Library at 1000 Fourth Ave., designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture of the Netherlands and Seattle-based LMN Architects.

During the past 2-1/2 years of construction, the public has watched with excitement as the giant, 11-level steel and shimmering glass structure has gone up. The community will finally get to see what's inside when the doors open at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 23. The library will stay open until 7 p.m. to accommodate the estimated 30,000 people expected to tour the 362,987-square-foot building that day.

"When people walk in, they will be awash in the natural light and voluminous space," said City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs. " It is a stimulating haven and treasure house of books, media, computers and other resources. At last, the people of Seattle will have the library they deserve."

Anthrax is an acute disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Most forms of the disease are lethal, and it affects both humans and other animals. There are effective vaccines against anthrax, and some forms of the disease respond well to antibiotic treatment.

Like many other members of the genus Bacillus, Bacillus anthracis can form dormant endospores (often referred to as "spores" for short, but not to be confused with fungal spores) that are able to survive in harsh conditions for decades or even centuries. Such spores can be found on all continents, even Antarctica. When spores are inhaled, ingested, or come into contact with a skin lesion on a host they may become reactivate and multiply rapidly.


Signs and symptoms

Pulmonary

Respiratory infection in humans initially presents with cold or flu-like symptoms for several days, followed by severe (and often fatal) respiratory collapse. Historical mortality was 92%, but, when treated early (seen in the 2001 anthrax attacks), observed mortality was 45%. Distinguishing pulmonary anthrax from more common causes of respiratory illness is essential to avoiding delays in diagnosis and thereby improving outcomes. An algorithm for this purpose has been developed. Illness progressing to the fulminant phase has a 97% mortality regardless of treatment.
