Every time I see Michael J. Fox's portrayal in one of those early scenes he reminds me of Pat Reese. If I recall now correctly I think their haircuts are similar. I think the year was 1989 and we made a port visit somewhere and Pat came back to the ship from liberty and was all excited about finding mangoes growing on a tree.
I don't recall when he reported onboard. The second half of 1988 or later. The photos of him from a later deployment beginning in 1989 show him as an FC2 so that would have been about at least one year after he reported aboard. I would have said he was an FC3 when I left the ship. The time requirements for PO3 was minimum 1 year in rate as I recall. I can't recall if he went to the same specialty school I did. I was already an FC3 when I started FC-A school. The typical student was an E-3 and then was rated FC3 at graduation from FC-A school.
I know I watched this film sometime back in the early 1990s. Watching the video tonight I am reminded again of a night I was on Shore Patrol. I'm pretty sure that was November 1989 in Barcelona. One of my division coworkers got in trouble on liberty and we had to go get him from the city police. The three of us on Shore Patrol were standing outside on the sidewalk with him and I saw him start walking away from us. I watched him get maybe about a block away before the officer in charge of our patrol saw him and ordered me to run after him and bring him back which I did and he came back when I asked him to.
The actor portraying "Clark" in this work and later one always reminds me of Mogge.
Watching more of it reminds me of 11:45 PM on 31 December 1989. My division Combat Systems was the primary force for ship's security along with our weapons systems duties and Senior Chief Boon assigned me the 4-hour midwatch on the forward deck of the ship while we were inport in Palma de Mallorca. I was standing there outside at night in the pouring rain as usual wearing a helmet and a rain poncho and standing guard as a sentry with an M-14 rifle. Standing there at the front of the ship on the topside weather deck looking aft and up at the darkened ship's bridge and always reminded of how it had so many more windows that the first ship I was assigned to I could look around at midnight and see some fireworks distant.
