CHAPTER 9
STALKERS
So long, Chester, Killgore thought.
"Okay," she said matter-of-factly. "Any symptoms with the others?"
"None yet. Antibody tests are positive, however," Killgore replied. "Another week or so before we see frank symptoms, I expect."
"We need a set of healthy test subjects," Barbara Archer said. "These people are too-too sick to be proper benchmarks for Shiva."
"That means some risks."
"I know that," Archer assured him. "And you know we need better test subjects."
"Yes, but the risks are serious," Killgore observed.
"And I know that, " Archer replied.
"Okay, Barb, run it up the line. I won't object. You want to take care of Chester? I have to run over to see Steve."
"Fine." She walked to the wall, picked up the phone, and punched three digits onto the keypad to get the disposal people.
For his part, Killgore went into the changing area. He stopped in the decontamination chamber first of all, pushed the large square red button, and waited for the machinery to spray him down from all directions with the fog solution of antiseptics that were known to be immediately and totally lethal to the Shiva virus. Then he went through the door into the changing room itself, where he removed the blue plastic suit, tossed it into the bin for further and more dramatic decontamination-it wasn't really needed, but the people in the lab felt better about it then-then dressed in surgical greens. On the way out, he put on a white lab coat. The next stop was Steve Berg's shop. Neither he nor Barb Archer had said it out loud yet, but everyone would feel better if they had a working vaccine for Shiva.
"Hey, John," Berg said, when his colleague came in.
"'Morning, Steve," Killgore responded in greeting. "How're the vaccines coming?"
"Well, we have 'A' and 'B' working now." Berg gestured to the monkey cages on the other side of the glass. " 'A' batch has the yellow stickers. 'B' is the blue, and the control group is red."
Killgore looked. There were twenty of each, for a total of sixty rhesus monkeys. Cute little devils. "Too bad," he observed.
"I don't like it, either, but that's how it's done, my friend." Neither man owned a fur coat.
"When do you expect results?"

Health workers receive buckets, as part of their Ebola virus prevention protective gear, at an Ebola treatment center in the city of Monrovia, Liberia, Monday, Aug. 18, 2014. Liberia's armed forces were given orders to shoot people trying to illegally cross the border from neighboring Sierra Leone, which was closed to stem the spread of Ebola, local newspaper Daily Observer reported Monday. 2014 Ebola Outbreak in West Africa [ Retrieved 7:30 PM 12 September 2014 Pacific Time USA ]
What's New
Highlights
The 2014 Ebola outbreak is the largest Ebola outbreak in history and the first in West Africa. The current outbreak is affecting multiple countries in West Africa (see Affected Areas table). The outbreak does not pose a significant risk to the United States. A small number of cases in Lagos and Port Harcourt, Nigeria, have been associated with a man from Liberia who traveled to Lagos and died from Ebola, but the virus does not appear to have been widely spread in Nigeria. The case in Senegal is related to a man who traveled there from Guinea.
CDC is working with other U.S. government agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other domestic and international partners and has activated its Emergency Operations Center to help coordinate technical assistance and control activities with partners. CDC has also deployed teams of public health experts to West Africa and will continue to send experts to the affected countries.
No confirmed Ebola cases have been reported in the United States.

CHAPTER 17
BUSHES
The time from injection to onset of frank symptoms was programmed at four to six weeks, and, again, the only survivors would be those lucky souls from the deepest end of the gene pool. One hundred such people out of a million would survive. Maybe less. Ebola-Shiva was one nasty little bastard of a bug, three years in the making, and how odd Killgore thought, that it had been that easy to construct. Well, that was science for you. Gene manipulation was a new field, and those things were unpredictable. The sad part, maybe, was that the same people in the same lab were charging along a new and unexpected path - human longevity and reportedly making real progress. Well, so much the better. An extended life to appreciate the new world that Shiva would bring about.

Boomer: This guy's probably died and been reborn a dozen times. You may have faced him before.
Starbuck: So what, raiders reincarnate? Just like you?
Boomer: Yeah, just like me.
Starbuck: Great. What a frakkin' world.
Boomer: A raider's much like a trained animal, with the basic consciousness and survival instinct. But with the destruction of the resurrection ship, when they die, they're really dead. So, they're not gonna mount mass attacks where they could have major casualties.
Starbuck: Raiders reincarnate?
Boomer: Makes sense, doesn't it? It takes months for you to train a nugget into an effective viper pilot. And then they get killed. And their experience, their knowledge, their skill sets. They're all lost forever. So, if you could bring 'em back and put 'em in a brand new body, wouldn't you do it? 'Cause death then becomes a learning experience. How, uh-- how many pilots have we lost? I mean, have you lost?
Starbuck: You know, there are times when I look at you and I forget what you are. All I see is that kid that pooched her landings day after day. The kid that was frakkin' the chief and thinking she was getting away with it.
Boomer: Yeah, I remember. [Crying] You were like a big sister to--
Boomer reaches out to touch Starbuck on the leg. The marines promptly cock and raise their rifles to stop her.
Boomer: Kara, um-- be careful of Scar, okay? He's filled with rage.
Starbuck: About what?
Boomer: Dying's a painful and traumatic experience. Every time he's reborn, he's filled with more bitter memories. Scar hates you every bit as much as you hate him.

He sang: “She brought me coffee… she brought me tea… she brought me… damn near everything… but the workhouse key. Right, Lloyd?”
“Sure,” Lloyd said huskily. His eyes never left the small dark stone. Flagg began to walk it from one finger to the next like a magician doing a trick.
“Now you’re a man who must appreciate the value of a good key,” the man said. The dark stone disappeared in his clenched fist and suddenly reappeared in his other hand, where it began to finger-walk again. “I’m sure you are. Because what a key is for is opening doors. Is there anything more important in life than opening doors, Lloyd?”

It was second class but what's to lose
And looking out her window she could more than assume
That you can't see air or time
She's the only rocketeer in the whole damn place
They gave her a mirror so she could talk to a face
She still got plenty lonely but that's just the case
With time, time, time
Started hearing voices sometime in June
She knew she could go crazy but didn't think that soon
Now she doesn't feel lonely but she'd just as soon
Try, try, try try

I read a paperback and want to come home soon
I'm shot to the moon
Been there a half an hour, I want to come home soon

ICELAND
Edwards had learned to hate the rust-colored contour lines on his maps. Each one announced a change of twenty meters. He tried to work it out in his head, but got no further than sixty-five-point-six feet for every one of the Goddamned red-brown lines. Sometimes the lines were spread apart by as much as an eighth of an inch. Other times they were packed together tightly enough that the lieutenant half expected to find a sheer wall. He remembered the one visit he'd had to Washington, D.C., and the time he and his father had scornfully walked past the tourists lined up to wait for an elevator ride to the top of the Washington Monument, preferring to walk the five hundred feet up the square-spiral staircase to the observation deck. They'd arrived at the top tired but proud. He was now making that same climb about every ninety minutes, except this time there were no smooth, even steps, and no elevator awaited them at the top for a more relaxing trip down . . . and no taxi to the hotel.
They climbed ten contour lines-two hundred meters, or six hundred fifty-six feet-three hours after breaking camp; crossing, the map said, from the Skorradalshreppur second-order administrative division to the Lundarreykjadashreppur second-order administrative division. There was no green highway sign to announce this, the Icelanders being bright enough to know that anyone who traveled out here lived here and needed no directions. They were rewarded with two kilometers of fairly level terrain as they walked between a pair of marshes. It was littered with rock and ash from what seemed to be an extinct volcano about four miles away.
"Take a break," Edwards said. He sat down next to a three-foot rock so that he'd have something to lean against, and was surprised when Vigdis came over. She sat down three feet away, facing him.
"How are you today?" he asked. There was life in her eyes now, Mike saw. Perhaps the demons that had awakened her the previous day were now gone? No, he thought, they'd never be completely gone-but you had to be alive to have nightmares, and they would probably fade in time. With time you could recover from anything, except murder.
"I have not thanked you for my life."
"We could not stand by and let them kill you," he said, wondering if it was a lie. If the Russians had simply killed all three people in the house, would he have attacked them or would he have waited and simply looted the house after they'd left? It was a time for the truth.
"I didn't do it for you, not only for you."
"I do not understand."
Edwards took his wallet from a back pocket and opened it to a five-year-old photograph. "That's Sandy, Sandra Miller. We grew up on the same block, all the way through school. Maybe we would have gotten married someday," he said quietly. And maybe not, he admitted to himself. People change. "I went to the Air Force Academy, she went to the University of Connecticut in Hartford. October of her second year, she disappeared. She was raped and murdered. They found her a week later in a ditch. The guy who did it-they never proved he killed Sandy, but he raped two other girls at the school-well, he's in a mental hospital now. They said he was crazy, wasn't really responsible. So someday the docs'll say he's cured, and they'll let him out, and Sandy'll still be dead." Edwards looked down at the rocks.
"I couldn't do anything about that. I'm not a cop, I was two thousand miles away. But not this time." His voice showed no emotion at all. "This time was different."
"You love Sandy?" Vigdis asked.

Records:
October 29, 2012 - Hurricane hunter aircraft measure Sandy's central pressure at 940 millibars -- 27.76 inches - the lowest barometric reading ever recorded for an Atlantic storm to make landfall north of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The previous record holder was the 1938 "Long Island Express" Hurricane, which dropped as low as 946 millibars.
October 29, 2012 - The surge level at Battery Park in New York tops 13.88 feet at 9:24 pm surpassing the old record of 10.02 feet, set by Hurricane Donna in 1960.
October 29, 2012 - New York Harbor's surf reaches a record level when a buoy measures a 32.5-foot wave. That wave is 6.5 feet taller than a 25-foot wave churned up by Hurricane Irene in 2011.
Timeline:
October 29, 2012
- Approaches land as a Category 2 storm.
- Hurricane force winds extend 175 miles out from Sandy's eye, making it much larger than most storms of its type.
- Hurricane Sandy weakens to a post-tropical cyclone in the evening before making landfall along the coast of southern New Jersey.
- Three reactors experience trips, or shutdowns, during the storm, according to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission statement.

Daisuke Enomoto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Daisuke Enomoto (Enomoto Daisuke , born April 22, 1971, nicknamed Dice-K) is a Japanese businessman and former livedoor executive who hoped to become the fourth space tourist. He had trained at Star City, Moscow in Russia to fly with two members of Expedition 14 on board Soyuz TMA-9, which was launched on September 18, 2006.
However, on August 21, 2006, a Russian Federal Space Agency spokesman announced that Enomoto was "deemed not ready to fly for exclusively medical reasons", although he hinted that Enomoto might recover and join a later mission. His replacement on this particular flight was Iranian-American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari. Enomoto was involved in a lawsuit against Virginia-based Space Adventures in which he hoped to reclaim the $21 million he paid the company over a two-year span. During the lawsuit, it was revealed that the "medical reason" was chronic kidney stones. Space Adventures claims it advised Enomoto to treat the kidney stones aggressively and when he did not, they had to disqualify him from spaceflight. Enomoto claims the real reason for his disqualification was his refusal to provide additional funds to Space Adventures.
Enomoto would have been the first self-funded space tourist from Japan and Asia (journalist Toyohiro Akiyama flew on Soyuz TM-11 in 1990, and could be regarded as the first space business traveller). Enomoto's flight would have taken him to the International Space Station (ISS) after lifting off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the world's oldest spaceport.
Enomoto made international news when it was revealed that he intended to go into space wearing a costume akin to that of Char Aznable, a character from the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam. His planned experiment was to put together one or more Gundam models in zero gravity.

They followed a footpath around the mountain. Vigdis told them it was a favorite place for tourists to visit. A small glacier on the northern side of the mountain fed a half-dozen streams, which led in turn to a sizable valley full of small farms. They had a fine vantage point. Almost everything in sight was below them, including several roads that were kept under constant scrutiny. Edwards debated the advantages of cutting straight across the valley toward their objective or staying on the rough ground to the east.
"I wonder what kinda radio station that is," Smith said. There was a tower of some sort eight miles west of them.
Mike looked at Vigdis and got a shrug. She didn't listen to the radio.
"Not easy to tell from this far," Edwards observed. "But probably they have some Russians." He unfolded his big map. This part of the island showed lots of roads, but the information had to be taken with a grain of salt. Only two of the roads had decent surfaces. The rest were called "seasonal" on the map-meaning exactly what? Edwards wondered. Of these, some were well maintained, others were not. The map didn't say which was which. All of the Soviet troops they'd seen on the ground were driving jeep-type vehicles, not the tracked infantry-carriers they'd observed on the invasion day. A good driver in a four-by-four could go almost anywhere, however. How good were the Soviets at driving jeeps over broken ground . . . so many things to worry about, Edwards thought.
Edwards tracked his field glasses over the area to his west. He saw a twin-prop airliner lift off from a small airfield. You forgot about that, didn't you? The Russians are using those puddle-jumpers to ferry troops around . . .
"Sarge, what do you think?" Might as well get a professional decision.
Smith grimaced. The choice was between physical danger and physical exhaustion. Some choice, he thought. That's supposed to be why we have officers.
"I'd at least have some patrols down there, Lieutenant. Lots of roads, figure some checkpoints so they can keep an eye on the local folks. Let's say that radio's a navigation beacon. It'll be guarded. Regular radio station'll be guarded, too. All these farms-what kinda farms, Miss Vigdis?"
"Sheep, some milk cows, potatoes," she answered.
"So when the Russkies are off duty, there'll be some wandering around to get some fresh food instead of their canned crap. We would, too. I don't much like it, Lieutenant."
Edwards nodded agreement. "Okay, we head east. Just about out of food."
"There's always fish."

"They didn't ask me," explained Chief of the General Staff Marshal Shavyrin. "They didn't ask for my evaluation. The political decision was already made when they called me in Thursday night. When was the last time the Defense Minister asked me for a substantive judgmental decision?"
"And what did you say?" asked Marshal Rozhkov, Commander-in-Chief of Ground Forces. The initial response was a grim, ironic smile.
"That the armed forces of the Soviet Union were able to carry out this task, given four months of preparation."
"Four months . . ." Rozhkov stared out the window. He turned back. "We won't be ready."
"Hostilities will commence on 15 June," Shavyrin replied. "We must be ready, Yuri. And what choice did I have? Would you have had me say, 'I am sorry, Comrade General Secretary, but the Soviet Army is unable to carry out this task'? I would have been dismissed and replaced by someone more tractable-you know who my replacement will be. Would you rather answer to Marshal Bukharin-"
"That fool!" Rozhkov growled. It had been the then-Lieutenant General Bukharin whose brilliant plan had led the Soviet Army into Afghanistan. Professionally a nonentity, his political connections had not only saved him, but continued his career to near the pinnacle of uniformed power. A clever man, Bukharin. Never involved in the mountain campaigns himself, he could point to his brilliant paper plan and complain that it had been poorly executed, after he had moved on to command of the Kiev Military District, historically the shining gate of marshal's rank.
"So, would you have him in this office, dictating your plans to you?" Shavyrin asked. Rozhkov shook his head. The two men had been friends and comrades since each had commanded a tank troop in the same regiment, just in time for the final surge toward Vienna in 1945.
"How are we to go about it?" Rozhkov asked.
"Red Storm," the Marshal replied simply. Red Storm was the plan for a mechanized attack into West Germany and the Low Countries. Constantly updated for changes in the force structures of both sides, it called for a two-to three-week campaign commencing after a rapid escalation of tension between East and West. Despite this, in accordance with standard Soviet strategic doctrine, it called for strategic surprise as a precondition for success, and the use of conventional weapons only.

In Tokyo, Ren Shimosawa follows an address to an apartment complex and goes inside. He enters a specific apartment and finds a girl, Miko Otomo, making origami swans. When she notices him and asks who he is, Ren says that he's supposed to be there and explains that he's a famous gamer. Specifically, he's an expert at a game named Evernow. He reached a secret level and unlocked an address: Miko's. Miko says that it's impossible and tells Ren that he has to go, because no one is allowed into her apartment. Ren thinks that she looks familiar, and notices a painting of an Evernow landscape on the wall. Miko ushers him out and closes the door and then looks at the painting.

If I do know other languages, such as the Japanese language, why don’t I remember any of it? It seems that if I can remember English, I should at least have some basic understanding of other languages. The other day I was wondering if I still under other languages on a sub-conscious level. If someone around me is speaking in another language I used to know, I may understand and be mentally processing what they are saying without even being aware of that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language_classification
The classification of the Japanese language is uncertain and disputed. Historical linguists who specialize in Japanese agree that it is one of the two members of the Japonic language family, but remain divided as to the origins of the Japonic languages. An older view, still held by many non-specialists, is that Japanese is a language isolate. However, since the Japonic family consists of two known members, Japanese and Ryukyuan, that analysis may be inaccurate.

Speed of Sound
How long before I get in?
Before it starts, before I begin?
How long before you decide?
Before I know what it feels like?
Where To, where do I go?
If you never try, then you'll never know.
How long do I have to climb,
Up on the side of this mountain of mine?
Look up, I look up at night,
Planets are moving at the speed of light.
Climb up, up in the trees,
every chance that you get,
is a chance you seize.
How long am I gonna stand,
with my head stuck under the sand?
I'll start before I can stop,
before I see things the right way up.
All that noise, and all that sound,
All those places I got found.
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
if you could see it then you'd understand?
Ideas that you'll never find,
All the inventors could never design.
The buildings that you put up,
Japan and China all lit up.
The sign that I couldn't read,
or a light that I couldn't see,
some things you have to believe,
but others are puzzles, puzzling me.
All that noise, and all that sound,
All those places I got found.
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
if you could see it then you'd understand,
ah when you see it then you'll understand?
All those signs, I knew what they meant.
Some things you can invent.
Some get made, and some get sent,
Ooh?
Birds go flying at the speed of sound,
to show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
if you could see it then you'd understand,
ah, when you see it then you'll understand?

An Eager Iowa Embraces Bush During Visit
June 13, 1999 MARK Z. BARABAK TIMES POLITICAL WRITER
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Mere moments after George W. Bush planted his ostrich-skin boots on Iowa soil, Carmen Halverson regarded him with a practiced eye. She pronounced herself pleased.
Halverson has seen loads of presidential candidates come and go. The Texas governor, she adjudged Saturday, is the real deal: "Down to earth and approachable."
At the time, Bush was 30 feet away, surrounded by a swarm of reporters and well-wishers, making his approachability more abstract than real. But Halverson, the chair of the Blackhawk County Republican Women, had already seen and heard enough.
"He has a good appreciation of what the job entails and a good idea of what it takes to get there," she declared after Bush spoke for scarcely two minutes at an airport welcoming rally.
And so it went Saturday as the Republican presidential front-runner came calling on an eager Iowa. It was Bush's first meet-the-people journey outside Texas after months of self-imposed campaign quarantine. The people he met seemed determined not to be disappointed, regardless of anything Bush said or did.
And Bush seemed equally determined to dispel any notion he hoped to swan his way to the nomination as critics--mainly his Republican rivals--have suggested. "You can expect someone who's gonna travel this state as hard as I possibly can," Bush promised. "I intend to win this nomination the old-fashioned way, and that's to earn it."
Hours later at a tourist stop in eastern Iowa, Bush used his first major campaign address to offer a broadly thematic overview of his candidacy, replete with GOP staples such as calls for lower taxes, less regulation, a beefed-up military and "a foreign policy with a touch of iron."
And just in case there were any doubts, given the exploratory status of his campaign, Bush stated definitively: "I'm running for the presidency of the United States. There's no turning back

XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974
Executive Order 11776 - Continuing the President's Committee on Mental Retardation and Broadening its Membership and Responsibilities
March 28, 1974
The President's Committee on Mental Retardation, established by Executive Order No. 11280 on May 11, 1966, has mobilized national planning and carried out basic programs in the field of mental retardation. National goals have been established to reduce the occurrence of mental retardation by one-half before the end of the century and to return one-third of the people in mental institutions to useful lives in their communities. The achievement of these goals will require the most effective possible use of public and private resources.
Our country has become increasingly aware in recent years of the need to assure those who are retarded their full status as citizens under the law, and of the continuing need to mobilize the support of the general public and of specialized professional and volunteer groups for mental retardation activities. We also know that we must constantly evaluate existing programs to determine their adequacy and must continually consider a broad range of proposals for new mental retardation activities.

Quotes
Jerry Landers: How can you permit all the suffering that goes on the world?
God: Ah, how can I permit the suffering?
Jerry Landers: Yes!
God: I don't permit the suffering. You do. Free will. All the choices are yours.
Jerry Landers: Choices? What choices?
God: You can love each other, cherish and nurture each other or you can kill each other. Incidentally, "kill" is the word. It's not "waste." If I had wanted "waste" I would have written "thou shalt not waste." You're doing some very funny things with words. You're also turning the sky into mud. I look down, I can't believe the filth. Using the rivers for toilets, poisoning my fishes. You want a miracle? *You* make a fish from scratch. You can't. You think only God can make a tree? Try coming up with a mackerel. And when the last one's gone, that'll be that. Eighty-six on the fish, goodbye sky, so long world, over and out.

Quotes
God: Why is it so hard for you to believe? Is my physical existence any more improbable than your own? What about all that hoo-ha with the devil awhile ago from that movie? Nobody had any problem believing that the devil took over and existed in a little girl. All she had to do was wet the rug, throw up some pea soup and everybody believed. The devil you could believe, but not God? I work in my own way. I don't, I don't get inside little children; they got enough to do just being themselves. Also I'm not about to go around to every person in the world and say, 'Look it's me, I wanna talk to you.' So I picked one man. One very good man. I told him God lives. I live. He had trouble believing too, in the beginning. I understood. I'm not sure how this whole miracle business started, the idea that anything connected with me has to be a miracle. Personally I'm sorry that it did. Makes the distance between us even greater. But if a miracle helps you believe that I am who I say I am... I'll give you one. A good one.

God: God-like?
Jerry Landers: Yeah, God-like.
God: And what to you would be God-like?
Jerry Landers: Uh... Change the weather.

Jerry Landers: No, no. I wouldn't want anybody hurt. I was just thinking maybe, uh... What about a little rain?
God: A little rain?
Jerry Landers: Yeah, a small shower.
God: One small shower. You got it.

God: Rain's not that hard.
Jerry Landers: It's unbelievable!
God: Would you like it to rain a little harder?
Jerry Landers: No, no. This is fine.
God: How about bigger drops?
Jerry Landers: No! This is fine! Fine!

CHAPTER 24
Not so much the elimination, John Brightling thought more precisely, as the culling back of the most dangerous species on the planet, which would allow Nature to restore Herself, with just enough human stewards to watch and study and appreciate the process. In a thousand or so years, there might be a million or so humans, but that was a small number in the great scheme of things, and the people would be properly educated to understand and respect nature instead of destroying her. The goal of the Project wasn't to end the world. It was to build a new one, a new world in the shape that Nature Herself intended. On that he would put his own name for all eternity. John Brightling, the man who saved the planet.
Brightling looked at the key in his hand, then got back into his car. The driver took him to the main entrance, and there he used the key, surprised and miffed to see that the door was unlocked. Well, there were still people going in and out. He took the elevator to his office-apartment atop the main building. That door, he saw, was locked as it was supposed to be, and he opened it with a kind of one-person ceremony, and walked into the seat of Olympus's chief,o d. No, that wasn't right. Insofar as there was a god, it was Nature. From his office windows, he could see out over the plains of Kansas, the swaying young wheat… it was so beautiful. Almost enough to bring tears to his eyes. Nature. She could be cruel to individuals, but individuals didn't matter. Despite all the warnings, humankind hadn't learned that.
Well, learn it they would, the way Nature taught all Her lessons. The hard way.

CHAPTER 17
BUSHES
"Rachel Carson come to life, eh?" she asked.
"Look, you know the science as well as I do - maybe better. We're doing things like-like the Alvarez Event that took the dinosaurs out, except we're doing it willfully. It took how long for the planet to recover from that?"
"Alvarez? The planet didn't recover, Kevin," Carol Brightling pointed out. "It jump-started mammals-us, remember? The preexisting ecological order never returned. Something new happened, and that took a couple of million years just to stabilize." Must have been something to see, she told herself. To watch something like that in progress, what a scientific and personal blessing it must have been, but there'd probably been nobody back then to appreciate it. Unlike today.
"Well, in a few more years we'll get to see the first part of it, won't we? How many more species will we kill of this year, and if the ozone situation keeps getting worse - my God, Carol, why don't people get it? Don't they see what's happening? Don't they care?"
"Kevin, no, they don't see, and, no, they don't care. Look around." The restaurant was filled with important people wearing important-looking clothes, doubtless discussing important things over their important dinners, none of which had a thing to do with the planetary crisis that hung quite literally over all their heads. If the ozone layer really evaporated, as it might, well, they'd start using sunblock just to walk the streets, and maybe that would protect them enough… but what of the natural species. the birds, the lizards, all the creatures on the planet who had no such option? The studies suggested that their eyes would be seared by the unblocked ultraviolet radiation, which would kill them off, and so the entire global ecosystem would rapidly come apart. "Do you think any of these people know about it-or give a damn if they do?"
"I suppose not." He sipped down some more of his white wine. "Well, we keep plugging away, don't we?"
"It's funny," she went on. "Not too long ago we fought wars, which kept the population down enough that we couldn't damage the planet all that much- but now peace is breaking out all over, and we're advancing our industrial capacity, and so, peace is destroying us a lot more efficiently than war ever did. Ironic, isn't it?"
"And modern medicine. The anopheles mosquito was pretty good at keeping the numbers down-you know that Washington was once a malarial swamp, diplomats deemed it a hazardous-duty post! So then we invented DDT. Good for controlling mosquitoes, but tough on the peregrine falcon. We never get it right. Never," Mayflower concluded.
"What if?…" she asked wistfully.
"What if what, Carol?"
"What if nature came up with something to knock the human population back?T-"
"The Gaea Hypothesis?" That made him smile. The idea was that the earth was itself a thinking, self-correcting organism that found ways to regulate the numerous living species that populated the planet. "Even if that's valid-and I hope it is, really - I'm afraid that we humans move too fast for Gaea to deal with us and our work. No, Carol, we've created a suicide pact, and we're going to take down everything else with us, and a hundred years from now, when the human population worldwide is down to a million or so people, they'll know what went wrong and read the books and look at the videotapes of the paradise we once had, and they'll curse our names-and maybe, if they're lucky, they'll learn from it when they crawl back up from the slime. Maybe. I doubt it. Even if they try to learn, they'll worry more about building nuclear power reactors so they can use their electric toothbrushes. Rachel was right. CHAPTER 19
The idea was simple enough. A rat was a pig was a dog, was a boy - woman in this case. All had an equal right to life. They'd done extensive testing of Shiva on monkeys, for whom it had proved universally lethal, and he'd watched all those tests, and shared the pain of the subsentient animals who felt pain as real as what F4 felt, though in the case of the monkeys morphine hadn't been possible, and he'd hated that hated inflicting pain on innocent creatures with whom he could not talk and to whom he could not explain things.

Dr. Warren Wright Bacon, 84, `Was Always Learning Something'
By Elouise Schumacher
His best friend couldn't believe his eyes: There was Dr. Warren Wright Bacon, steering a ferry boat across Puget Sound.
"He piloted that thing clear from Bremerton to Seattle and put it in the dock," said Dr. Richard Walden about the unusual event three decades ago. "The captain told me that no one knew more about the boat than `Doc.' "
Learning all he could about the workings of a ferry boat was just one of the many hobbies of Dr. Bacon, who died Oct. 30 in Edmonds.
Dr. Bacon was born Feb. 11, 1907, in Minnesota, and he graduated from Loma Linda, Calif., University Medical School in 1942. During World War II he practiced near Bremerton, treating Navy workers at the shipyard.
After the war he started a family practice in Gig Harbor, later returning to Loma Linda to be trained in radiology. He practiced radiology in Edmonds and served on the teaching staff at the University of Washington Medical School until his retirement at age 65.

CHAPTER 32
BLOOD WORK
It was easier for Henriksen. What people were doing to the world was a crime. Those who did it, supported it, or did nothing to stop it, were criminals. His job was to make them stop. It was the only way. And at the end of it the innocent would be safe, as would Nature. In any case, the men and the instruments of the Project were now in place. Wil Gearing was confident that he could accomplish his mission, so skillfully had Global Security insinuated itself into the security plan for the Sydney Olympics, with the help of Popov and his ginned-up operations in Europe. So, the Project would go forward, and that was that, and a year from now the planet would be transformed. Henriksen's only concern was how many people would survive the plague. The scientific members of the Project had discussed it to endless length. Most would die from starvation or other causes, and few would have the capacity to organize themselves enough to determine why the Project members had also survived and then take action against them. Most natural survivors would be invited into the protection of the elect, and the smart ones would accept that protection. The others-who cared? Henriksen had also set up the security systems at the Kansas facility. There were heavy weapons there, enough to handle rioting farmers with Shiva symptoms, he was sure.
The most likely result of the plague would be a rapid breakdown of society. Even the military would rapidly come apart, but the Kansas facility was a good distance from the nearest military base, and the soldiers based pit Fort Riley would be sent to the cities first to maintain order until they, too, came down with symptoms. Then they'd be treated by the military doctors-for what little good it would do-and by the time unit cohesion broke down, it would be far too late for even the soldiers to take any organized action. So, it would be a twitchy time, but one that would pass rapidly, and so long as the Project people in Kansas kept quiet, they ought not to suffer organized attack. Hell, all they had to do was to let the world believe that people were dying there, too, maybe dig a few graves and toss bags into them for the cameras-better yet, burn them in the open-and they could frighten people away from another focal center of the plague. No. They'd considered this one for years. The Project would succeed. It had to. Who else would save the planet?
The cafeteria theme today was Italian, and Popov was pleased to see that the cooks here were not "vegans." The lasagna had meat in it. Coming out with his tray and glass of Chianti, he spotted Dr. Killgore eating alone and decided to walk over that way.
"Ah, hello, Mr. Popov."
"Good day, Doctor. How did my blood work turn out?"
"Fine. Your cholesterol is slightly elevated, and the HDL/LDL ratio is a little off, but I wouldn't get very upset about it. A little exercise should fix it nicely. Your PSA is fine-"
"What's that?"
"Prostate-Specific Antibody, a check for prostate cancer. All men should check that out when they turn fifty or so. Yours is fine. I should have told you yesterday, but I got piled up. Sorry about that-but there was nothing important to tell you, and that's a case where no news really is good news, Mr. Popov."
"My name is Dmitriy," the Russian said, extending his hand. "John," the doctor replied, taking it. "Ivan to you, I guess."
"And I see you are not a vegan," Dmitriy Arkadeyevich observed, gesturing to Killgore's food.
"Oh? What? Me? No, Dmitriy, I'm not one of those. Homo sapiens is an omnivore. Our teeth are not those of vegetarians. The enamel isn't thick enough. That's sort of a political movement, the vegans. Some of them won't even wear leather shoes because leather's an animal product." Killgore ate half a meatball to show what he thought of that. "I even like hunting."
"Oh? Where does one do that here?"
"Not on the Project grounds. We have rules about that

They stuck a lot of needles in me when I was inpatient at the University of Washington Medical Center back in the summer of 2005. I remember one very dark night when I was in a mental haze from the drugs they were forcing on me (only because I went to the City of Kent Washington police department to report criminal activity directed at my personal property and which continues unabated to this very day) and I awoke in the dark in that hospital bed and a woman was glaring at me as she stuck another needle in hand. I thought about that later and I decided she was glaring at me because she was possibly expected me to club her with my fist, which I did not.

Shenouda III, original name Nazeer Gayed Roufail (born August 3, 1923, Asyut, Egypt—died March 17, 2012, Cairo), 117th pope of Alexandria and patriarch of the see of St. Mark. As the leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, an autocephalous (ecclesiastically independent) church of the Oriental Orthodox communion, Shenouda expanded the church’s membership both in Egypt and abroad while generally improving ecumenical relations, particularly with the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox churches. Ronald Reagan
XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989
Question-and-Answer Session With Reporters on the Situation in the Middle East
July 18, 1982
Q. What about sending Henry Kissinger to the Middle East as a special ambassador, sir?
The President. There've been no decisions or plans or anything of that kind. Simply, George and Judge Clark1 have asked a few people like that to come in and have a meeting and get their thoughts on what's going on.
1 Secretary of State George P. Shultz and Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs William P Clark.
Q. Have you made a decision on the cluster bombs and whether a new shipment will go to Israel?
The President. No, we've only received their statement, and we've been reviewing that.
Q. What is their statement?
Q. When are you going to make a statement?
Q. [Inaudible]—good idea to take some time now and review arms to Israel, particularly since a new shipment was to go—
The President. What?
Q. Is it a good time now to review what you might promise Israel, considering another shipment was to go tomorrow?
The President. This is what's on our minds right now—everything to do with the Middle East—and trying to find answers to that problem.
Q. What about the Syrian and the Saudi Foreign Ministers?
Q. What about the balanced budget, Mr. President? What are you going to say tomorrow?
The President. Tune in tomorrow.
Q. What about the ones who say that with a big deficit—you shouldn't be campaigning for a balanced budget because you have the biggest deficits in history.
The President. Yes, and there have been giant budgets for 21 of the last 22 years that I didn't have anything to do with. Now, we're going to try to turn the situation around.
Q. Mr. President, what did Mr. Begin say about—in his reply, concerning the—what did Begin say in his reply concerning the use of the cluster bomb?
The President. That report has just come in and is under study right now.
Q. Is it satisfactory?
The President. I can't tell you. We'll tell you.
Q. Thank you.
Note: The President spoke with reporters assembled at the South Portico of the White House as he was returning from a weekend stay at Camp David, Md.

For all these obvious clues that demonstrate that Microsoft is stealing my image, I am only finding the easy ones. Microsoft/Corbis's grand larceny is much more complex. They are developing their content by stalking me constantly and when they start selling the property they have stolen from me, all of what I have figured out so far will be just the tip of the iceburg. I am seeing that my family, including my children, are showing up in Microsoft/Corbis's attempts to steal my image for the financial gain of Microsoft/Corbis and accomplices. It may be that all this wasn't supposed to be revealed by them until decades from now so they are taking a lot of time to develop the content because there is going to be such a large market for it in the future. And they have a world audience to market to. They can, for example, play up on anti-American sentiment and that is why they revealed that I flew with Israel to Iraq in 1981. A lot of people that hate America would be very interested in buying and viewing that content. Bill Gates is thinking that there will be so much anti-American sentiment by that time that no one will really care that they had hidden cameras in my homes for all those years. People will still purchase and view whatever content they deliver regardless of just how badly Microsoft/Corbis was stalking me or because of the destruction Microsoft/Corbis caused as a result of selling their stolen product.
It is a win-win for Bill Gates and accomplices. He knows that people will still buy the property he has stolen from me regardless of how it wrecks my life. It is the same reason the paparazzi has such a lucrative appeal for people. If there wasn't a lot of money to be made in stalking celebrities, there wouldn't be so many people taking pictures of them. Bill Gates is the king of the paparazzi and he has billions to spend on crooked lawyers such as Brad Smith, dirty cops such as Dave Reichert, and corrupt politicians such as George W. Bush. There is something to all this that for Bill Gates is beyond money but I don't know what it is. Maybe he doesn't need any motivation and is doing it just because he is a sociopath.

Fifty Years of Paparazzi Photography
May 23, 2014
by Nadja Sayej
If you’re a fan of the not-so-classy celebrity shot, we’ve got a show for you: more than 600 snaps from the sneakiest and ballsiest photographers who have captured some of the most iconic work of the 20th century, exposing stars who are no different than we are. Paparazzi! Photographers: Stars and Artists is the first 50-year retrospective of paparazzi photography. The show opens on June 27 at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt and travels from Centre Pompidou in Metz, showcasing spy cameras, long lenses, and disguises, not to mention photos by Richard Avedon, Ron Galella, and Andy Warhol.
Some of the photos will even make you chukle. One photograph is of Mick Jagger chucking a teacup at French photographer Pascal Rostain. Another of Marlin Brando storming past photographer Ron Gallela, who is wearing a football helmet because Brando knocked out five of his teeth. Gallela is probably the only photographer who sued Brando, affirming, “I don't want anyone to think they can go around punching me if I am taking their picture. Get that story out, not the money.”
Madonna’s garbage is on view, courtesy of photographers Pascal Rostain and Bruno Mouron, who dig through the trash of celebrities.

FBI Director Mueller Names Timothy P. Murphy Deputy Director
Washington, D.C.

Director Robert S. Mueller, III named Timothy P. Murphy to be the FBI’s deputy director. Mr. Murphy has served as associate deputy director since January 2008, overseeing the FBI’s personnel, budget, administration, and infrastructure. He succeeds John S. Pistole, who left the FBI to serve as administrator of the Transportation Security Administration.
Director Mueller noted, “Tim has consistently shown exceptional leadership and met tough challenges head-on. I have every expectation that he will do the same as deputy director, and I look forward to working closely with him in his new position.”
Mr. Murphy entered on duty as a special agent in September 1988. Since joining the FBI, Mr. Murphy has been assigned to the Newark, Tampa, Washington, and Cincinnati Field Offices, in addition to four different positions at FBI Headquarters. While in the field, Mr. Murphy managed a variety of investigative matters, including counterterrorism and organized crime/drugs, and he served as a pilot in the aviation program and within the special operations, technical operations, undercover operations, and surveillance programs. He was an assistant special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, special agent in charge of the Cincinnati Division, and a member of the Director’s Special Agent in Charge Advisory Committee.
At FBI Headquarters, Mr. Murphy served in several positions, including supervisory special agent in the Executive Development and Selection Program, unit chief of the Senior Executive Service Unit and Director’s Research Group, and special assistant to Director Mueller. Mr. Murphy provided counsel to the Director on a variety of policy, budget, and administrative matters.
Mr. Murphy then became the assistant director of the Finance Division at FBI Headquarters. In this role, he formulated and executed the FBI’s then $6.2 billion budget.
Prior to joining the FBI, Mr. Murphy was a police officer in Michigan. He graduated from Ferris State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice.

Gov. Relents on Sped-Up Remapping
Schwarzenegger drops a demand that political districts be redrawn by next year. Some now call special election unlikely, but ballot effort goes on.
April 28, 2005 Robert Salladay and Jordan Rau Times Staff Writers
On Wednesday, the governor singled out the 23rd Congressional District, dubbing it -- displayed on a huge video screen -- the "ribbon of shame" district because it stretches 200 miles up the coast from Oxnard to Monterey County, and "in some areas the district is only a few hundred yards wide."
He said lawmakers were picking their voters, not the other way around.
The governors' aides insisted Wednesday that he was not softening his position. Spokeswoman Margita Thompson said: "It's nothing different than we said before. The governor has said all along that he wants to work with the Legislature. This isn't anything different.
"He wants it as soon as possible and whatever time it takes to be feasible," she said.
The Assembly Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, who is sponsoring legislation to redraw districts for the next election, said a delay would make it more difficult for Schwarzenegger to negotiate with the Legislature, because incumbents would remain insulated from public pressure.
"If you agree that redistricting is dysfunctional, why would you wait?" McCarthy asked. "If your arm is broken, you don't wait for the next doctor's appointment to see him. You go now."

The American Presidency Project
William J. Clinton
XLII President of the United States: 1993-2001
Remarks at the Presidio in San Francisco, California
June 9, 1996
Thank you. Thank you very much. Mr. Chandler, Mr. O'Neill, Mr. Mayor, it's wonderful to be back in San Francisco. Congresswoman Pelosi, Senator Boxer, Senator Feinstein, thank you all for your work on this magnificent project.
You know, I always love coming here, but I especially love coming right here because that's my jogging route right there. [Laughter] Whenever I come to San Francisco I always go down there and run to the Golden Gate Bridge and back, so—and I didn't know exactly where we were going to do this on the Presidio today. I got driven around a little bit, so I got to see some other things that are being done here. When I finally realized that we were going to do this here, I didn't know whether I could actually sit still long enough for the program to unfold, instead of just racing away down there—or, as the case may be, kind of stumbling away down there—toward the bridge.
I want to talk to you today about three little simple ideas that this magnificent place embodies, ideas that are easy to say but have a great deal to do with what kind of country we are and what kind of country we're going to be. When I think of the Presidio, I think of, first and foremost, preserving our incredible natural heritage and our important history. Second, I think about the obligation that the rest of the country has for defense conversion. And thirdly, I think about partnership, the kind of partnership that Jim Harvey's life embodied and that all the things that Mr. Chandler just mentioned represent.
And I want you to think about all that today because in my opinion if this country is going to be what we all want it to be as we move into the next century, we have to keep going until every place that lost a lot because of the end of the cold war—which was a happy and wonderful event—has been fully restored to economic prosperity through a real commitment of all the American people to defense conversion. Because we cannot, over the long run, sustain an American economy in this new world unless we have a theory of sustainable development that puts the environment first, not last, and recognizes that we can grow the economy and still preserve our natural heritage. And because we cannot do a lot of what we need to do publicly and still continue to bring the deficit down unless we have partners: business partners, citizen partners, like the young people in the conservation corps, and others who are committed to making the most of our national potential.
It was a brilliant thing that the late Congressman Burton did to provide for the fact that this would become a national park if ever the military should leave. But all over California you see now what can happen if there's a real commitment not to leave the people who fought the cold war for us behind; in Monterey, where Fort Ord is now the California State University at Monterey Bay; in Alameda, where machinists who once built Bradley fighting vehicles are now building electric cars for the 21st century; in Sacramento, where Packard Bell has now hired 3,600 people to assemble personal computers in a former Army depot. And now, of course, this newest of our national parks is showing the rest of our national parks the way to the future.
I have to tell you that—the previous speaker sort of alluded to this, and with greater specificity when Senator Feinstein mentioned the California Desert Protection Act and how we got it and then we very nearly lost it last year. But all of our national parks are at risk. Too many of them have fallen into disrepair. We're working hard to protect them. There were some people who wanted to sell off a lot of them or privatize them or just let them continue to fall into disrepair. We have resisted that, and I think it's clear now that there is an overwhelming bipartisan consensus in the United States that our national parks are a part of our national treasure; that we have to nourish them, we have to maintain them, we have to improve them. And the last thing in the wide world we need to do is to get rid of any of them. We need to make them better, instead.
But I will say again, in order to do this right, we're going to have to have a lot of support from citizens. The businesses now in this park are thriving, already helping to offset taxpayer costs. Here at Crissy Field, where de Havilland biplanes once touched down, this land will soon become the great common ground for all Americans: historic buildings, wide open areas for kids to play in, restored natural habitat. All the design and planning here have been undertaken through private, nonprofit campaigns. And as we have learned today from their smiling faces and strong voices, much of the work has been done by volunteers who are just as dedicated to this country's future as those who drilled with the 6th Army outside these hangars a generation ago.
The Presidio bill now in the Congress that Congresswoman Pelosi worked so hard for and that Senator Boxer talked about and she and Senator Feinstein are working hard for has virtually no opposition. It calls for a public-private trust to oversee the Presidio's economic future, to preserve the park for future generations, to create a national park that will sustain itself without Government funds. So let me say again, I urge Congress to send me this bill in a clean and straightforward way. We simply cannot continue to have lawmaking paralyzed by the attempts to add to every single good bill that comes along in the Congress some objectionable provision. We need the Presidio bill. We need it now; we need it clean; we need it unhampered.
Let me just say one other thing. I was thinking about my jogging and looking at Senator Cranston, and I remember in my earlier years, back when I had a private life when I was Governor, sometimes Senator Cranston and I would jog in Washington together. I was thinking about all the years that he devoted to public service here in California. When you look at something like the Presidio, when you see at least the natural beauty of it, forgetting about the buildings, you may think that it has been this way forever and that it would always be this way. But that is far from true. The trees above us, the eucalyptus, the Monterey cypress, believe it or not, were only planted 100 years ago. The Americans who planted them knew that they would never see them full grown. They would never walk under their shade, but they planted them anyway.
We are now being asked to deal with a different sort of planning. Our country is going through a lot of changes. We have proved that we can come to grips with the challenges of the modern economy. The American people have produced almost 10 million jobs in the last 3 1/2 years. And after a long dry spell, a lot of them are being produced here in California. But we cannot forget that what ought to animate us is a vision of what we want this place to be like 20 or 30 or 50 years from now.
I know what I want it to be. I want the Presidio to exist in a country and a State where everybody who is willing to work for it can live up to their dreams; where people have good jobs, yes, but also children have safe streets and good schools; where everybody has access to a clean environment and natural beauty; where our country is still a force for peace and freedom and decency in the world; and where instead of being divided by all these incredible differences that make up the American people, we are united by them and our respect for our diversity and our shared values. It all begins, in a fundamental way, with preserving what God has given us, and there has been no richer gift than the Presidio. I'll do my part, and I want you to keep doing yours.
Thank you, and God bless you all. Thank you.
NOTE: The President spoke at 6:25 p.m. at Crissy Field.

JUNE 13, 1955: INNUMERABLE CARATS OF ICE AMID ACTUAL SIBERIAN ICE
1955: Soviet geologists in eastern Siberia discover a massive deposit of diamond in what will become the Mir mine, the second largest excavated pit in the world.
The honor went to Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Elagina, and Viktor Avdeenko, who, while on an expedition, noticed that the ground under their feet contained kimberlite, a volcanic rock that proliferates in diamond-rich South Africa. And their hunch was correct. They were standing on very profitable ground.
Problem was, they were in Siberia, where it’s really, really cold. So cold, in fact, that the ground is frozen for seven months of the year. This would have been an unscalable obstacle for anyone but the Soviets.
The Mir (Russian for “peace”) mine went operational in 1957. Workers warmed up the permafrost with jet engines, and when that didn’t work (it’s very cold in Siberia), they dynamited it. By the 1960s they were extracting 10 million carats of diamond a year.
Sweet success brought sweet-talking representatives from De Beers, the massive multinational mining firm. You see, they were concerned about the Russians’ success. Might we tour your facility? they asked, apparently not realizing how cold it is in Siberia. Sure, the Russians said, so long as we can tour your facilities in South Africa.
What transpired in the summer of 1976 is a shining specimen of unbridled Soviet cunning. When De Beers executive Sir Philip Oppenheimer and his chief geologist arrived in Moscow, they were treated to grand banquets and meeting after meeting with Russian geologists. By the time they actually got to the Mir mine, their visas had nearly expired. They were allowed 20 minutes on site, then dragged back to Moscow.
For the next three decades workers dug deeper and deeper into the permafrost, enduring temperatures so low that tires and steel would shatter. By the time the mine closed in 2001, it had grown to 3,900 feet wide and 1,722 feet deep. Today, it remains an astonishingly gaping wound in the Siberian landscape.
Just don’t hover a helicopter over it. Yours wouldn’t be the first to get caught up in the pit’s downdraft and tumble into the depths.

About the Film
In the past several decades, whistleblowers have helped shape the nation’s history, from Deep Throat exposing President Nixon’s Watergate scandal to Edward Snowden’s revelations about the NSA’s surveillance. But long before the dawning of the digital age, one group of citizens risked everything when they uncovered illegal government spying programs.
The FBI, established in 1908, was for 60 years held unaccountable and untouchable until March 8, 1971, when The Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI, as they called themselves, broke into a small FBI office in Media, Pennsylvania, took every file, and shared them with the American public. After the break-in, the group sent the files to journalists at the Washington Post, which published them and shed light on the FBI’s widespread abuse of power. These actions exposed COINTELPRO, the FBI's illegal surveillance program that involved the intimidation of law-abiding Americans, and helped lead to the country's first congressional investigation of U.S. intelligence agencies.
The activist-burglars then disappeared into anonymity for forty years. Until now. Never caught, these previously anonymous Americans — parents, teachers and citizens — publicly reveal themselves for the first time and share their story in the documentary 1971. Using a mix of dramatic re-enactments and candid interviews with all involved, the film vividly brings to life one of the more important, yet relatively unexplored, chapters in modern American history.

After 43 years, activists admit theft at FBI office that exposed domestic spying
Monday Jan 6, 2014 8:54 PM
In the bombshell book, "The Burglary," journalist Betty Medzger exposes the robbers behind the momentous theft from an FBI office outside Philadelphia over 40 years ago. The perpetrators have come forward in an interview with NBC News.
BY MICHAEL ISIKOFF, NATIONAL INVESTIGATIVE CORRESPONDENT, NBC NEWS
Forty-three years after the mysterious theft of up to 1,000 documents from an FBI office outside Philadelphia, three former political activists are publicly confessing to the brazen burglary, calling it an act of “resistance” that exposed “massive illegal surveillance and intimidation.”
“We did it … because somebody had to do it,” John Raines, 80, a retired professor of religion at Temple University, said in an interview with NBC News. “In this case, by breaking a law — entering, removing files — we exposed a crime that was going on. … When we are denied the information we need to have to act as citizens, then we have a right to do what we did.”
Raines, his wife, Bonnie, and Keith Forsyth, a former Philadelphia cab driver, said they were part of an eight-member ring of anti-Vietnam War protesters that — while much of the country was gripped by the so-called “Fight of the Century” in New York between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier — broke into the FBI’s Media, Penn., office on March 8, 1971.
Members of the burglary team, armed with little more than a crowbar and wearing suits and ties, then walked off undetected with suitcases stuffed with sensitive bureau files that revealed a domestic FBI spying operation known as COINTELPRO. The heist enraged the bureau’s legendary Director J. Edgar Hoover, who launched a massive but ultimately futile manhunt.
The identities of the burglars are revealed in a book being published Tuesday, "The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover’s Secret FBI," by Betty Medsger, a former Washington Post reporter.
The book, as well as a new film, "1971," by documentarian Johanna Hamilton, portray the break-in as a story with new resonance in light of the recent revelations of National Security Agency surveillance of American citizens by ex-contractor Edward Snowden.
Much like Snowden, the FBI burglars selectively leaked the stolen files to journalists. They produced months of headlines about FBI surveillance of anti-war and civil rights groups — including the first references to COINTELPRO, a secret program started years earlier by Hoover and aimed at smearing the reputations of perceived enemies such as Dr. Martin Luther King.
Among the stolen files: plans to enhance “paranoia” among “New Left” groups by instilling fears that “there is an FBI agent behind every mailbox.” Another instructed agents in the Philadelphia area to monitor the “clientele” of “Afro-American type bookstores” and recruit informants among the “the Negro militant movement.”
“These documents were explosive,” said Medsger, who was the first reporter to write about them after receiving a batch of the files anonymously in the mail. Her book traces how the stolen files led to a landmark Senate investigation of intelligence and law enforcement agency abuses by the late Idaho Sen. Frank Church, and eventually to new Justice Department guidelines that barred the bureau from conducting investigations based on First Amendment protected political activity.
After the burglary, said Medsger, “The FBI was never the same.”
Advance word that the book and film might portray the burglars in a positive light has angered some former FBI agents, including Pat Kelly, who worked in the burgled office at the time. Along with a fellow agent, Kelly was the first to discover the break-in – a scene he still vividly remembers.
“Pat, someone got in our pants,” he recalls his colleague saying as they entered the office. “We found the office in total disarray. Files were all over the place. Paperwork discarded. All the drawers of the desks were ransacked. … I was in a state of shock.”
Kelly said he remains “incensed” by the crime and frustrated that, despite a wide-ranging investigation that at one point involved 200 agents, failed to find the thieves. As far as he’s concerned, the burglars “are criminals, not patriots.”
“I don’t believe such people have the right to take it upon themselves and make decisions’ about what should be made public,” said Kelly, who served as an FBI agent for 32 years until his retirement in 2001. “These are the same type of people that would look upon Snowden as perhaps a patriot when … in my opinion, he was a traitor.”
In response to a request for comment from NBC News, FBI spokesman Michael Kortan emailed this statement: “A number of events during that era, including the burglary, contributed to changes in how the FBI identified and addressed domestic security threats, leading to reform of the FBI’s intelligence policies and practices.”
With the five-year statute of limitations on burglary long since expired and the case officially closed, Raines, his wife and Forsyth said they have few fears about revealing their identities now. To the contrary, they spoke with pride about their roles during several interviews.
“We should have a plaque right up there,” said Raines, standing outside what is now a real estate office across from the Delaware County courthouse, and pointing to the second floor where the FBI office was located. “This is where it happened.”
The burglars were committed political activists during a turbulent era: John Raines was a civil rights “Freedom Rider” who marched in Selma, Ala., and got arrested in Little Rock sitting with African Americans at a segregated lunch counter. Later in the 1960s, they turned their protest efforts to stopping the Vietnam War.
“I was horrified that our government was lying to us about what was actually happening in Vietnam,” said Bonnie Raines, who later worked as a child care advocate. “And all the usual things we always did — picketing, marching, signing petitions — didn’t make any difference whatsoever.”
Their frustrations led them to acts of civil disobedience, including breaking into Philadelphia area Selective Service offices and destroying draft cards. In pulling off those raids, they got assistance from a fellow protester, Forsyth, who said he developed a skill at picking the locks on the draft board office by taking a correspondence course.
In the fall of 1970, an informal leader of their protest group , the late Bill Davidon, then a physics professor at Haverford College, proposed a more risky operation: breaking into a local FBI office in order to get proof of FBI surveillance of the peace movement.
Davidon’s daughter, Sarah, confirmed her father’s role, telling NBC News he first told her about it more than 25 years ago. “He didn’t call it a burglary. He always referred to it as ‘the Media action,’” she said. “He didn’t do this as an anarchist to break the law. He did this because he felt strongly about civil liberties.”

Ringling Goes Upscale Under the Little Top; After 42 Years, a Tent Again, but Just One Ring
By GLENN COLLINS
Published: February 9, 1999
SARASOTA, Fla.— Clowns wept. The ringmaster actually sobbed. A thousand roustabouts, aerialists and equestrians began looking for work. When ''The Greatest Show on Earth'' played under canvas for the final time on July 16, 1956, it was a front-page story in newspapers across the land, including this one.
But here in the city that was its winter home from 1927 to 1959, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus has raised its tent for the first time in 42 years.
In a parking lot at the Sarasota Fairgrounds right off Ringling Drive, flameproof polyvinyl has superseded canvas. Traditional circus fare like popcorn and cotton candy will be supplemented by designer sandwiches and cappuccino. And the new show will be performed in but one 38-foot-wide circus ring.
This is not intended to replace the three-ring extravaganza that shed its tents and began performing in air-conditioned arenas after the circus regrouped in 1957. The year before, the tented show was a victim of television, red ink, labor difficulties and bad weather.
And instead of being the greatest show on earth, the new show will qualify as one of the coziest: an intimate, upscale circus in a million-dollar custom-made Italian tent, tentatively titled ''Barnum's Kaleidoscape: The Magical One-Ring Experience From Ringling Brothers.''

Encyclopædia Britannica
Sir William Huggins
English astronomer
Sir William Huggins, (born Feb. 7, 1824, Stoke Newington, London, Eng.—died May 12, 1910, London), English astronomer who revolutionized observational astronomy by applying spectroscopic methods to the determination of the chemical constituents of stars and other celestial objects.
Huggins built a private observatory at Tulse Hill, London, in 1856. From 1859 he was one of a number of astronomers who began to apply Robert Wilhelm Bunsen’s and Gustav Robert Kirchhoff’s discoveries in spectrum analysis to astronomy. Huggins’s first spectroscopic observations, published in 1863, showed that stars are composed of the same elements that occur on the Sun and Earth. In 1864 the spectra he obtained of various nebulae established that they are composed mainly of incandescent gas (rather than aggregations of stars), thus settling a long debate over their composition. Soon afterward he obtained the spectra of several comets and was able to identify the presence of hydrocarbons in them. Huggins’ most important innovation in the use of spectroscopy came in 1868, when he became the first to measure the radial velocity of a star by the Doppler shift of its spectral lines. This particular technical innovation would later assume profound importance in studies of the structure and evolution of the universe.

Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: They're silver. That means I'm a lieutenant-colonel. If they were gold, THEN I'd be a major! Understand?
Bully in Bar: Yes sir!
Lt. Col. Alan Caldwell: Now, next time you see an officer of the Army, you'll know how to recognize his rank!
