PLANE PANIC SWEEPS D.C. – HORDES FLEE CAPITOL, WHITE HOUSE AS TINY CRAFT SPURS FALSE ALARM

WASHINGTON – In the biggest scare since 9/11, the White House and U.S. Capitol were evacuated yesterday after a two-seater plane penetrated restricted airspace – and didn’t respond to furious efforts to contact it.

Lost plane leads to Capitol evacuation
Posted: Thursday, May 12, 2005 12:00 am
WASHINGTON -A small plane strayed within three miles of the White House yesterday, leading to frantic evacuation of the executive mansion and the Capitol with military jets scrambling to intercept the aircraft and firing flares to steer it away.
At the Capitol, lawmakers, tourists and reporters raced out of the building, dodging the speeding motorcades of Latin American leaders who had been meeting with members of Congress. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., was hustled to a secure location. Police, rushing to get House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi out of the building, lifted her out of her shoes.

Reichert reaches across party lines to return Pelosi's shoe
— May 13th, 2005
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sometimes a really important issue can unite lawmakers on opposite ends of the political spectrum. Such was the case Thursday with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's missing shoe.
Pelosi, D-Calif., lost both her pink leather sling-back pumps during Wednesday's brief evacuation of the Capitol. Capitol police officers later returned one. But the other remained AWOL until it reappeared Thursday morning in the hands of a freshman Republican congressman.
"That is my shoe!" Pelosi exclaimed as Rep. Dave Reichert of Auburn walked into her weekly press conference, knelt and presented the missing footwear.
"I'm proud to be here, and proud to present you with your shoe," Reichert said.
The shoe found its way to Reichert when it flipped up in front of him as he ran down a crowded stairway on his way out of the Capitol.
