Police reviewing response to Muslim boy with clock at school

DALLAS (AP) — Police in suburban Dallas will review their response to a 14-year-old Muslim boy who brought a homemade clock to school that was mistaken for a possible bomb, according to the police chief overseeing the matter.
Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd on Friday said his department will examine its handling of the scare at MacArthur High School but that officers were justified Monday in questioning and handcuffing Ahmed Mohamed, given the limited amount of information they had.
The teen has said he brought the clock to school to show a teacher. Officials say Ahmed was arrested after another teacher saw the clock and grew concerned.
The device featured a circuit board, power supply and other items within a carrying case.
Police ultimately chose not to charge Ahmed with having a hoax bomb. He was suspended from school.
"I had significant feedback on this, some of which you wouldn't be able to print," Boyd said. "It's clear to me that no matter what we did, there would be those who agreed with it and those who wouldn't."
A petition organized by the group Progress Texas was submitted Friday to the Irving school district asking for the reversal of Ahmed's suspension and an apology.
The boy's family says he will enroll at another school.
One of the largest Muslim groups in Texas has said it does not fault the way police and school officials handled the matter.
Instead, Khalid Hamideh of the Islamic Association of North Texas on Thursday blamed political leaders for espousing inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric and creating a "climate of fear."
News of the arrest sparked an outpouring of support for Ahmed, including from President Barack Obama.

Shortly after I started working at Microsoft in 1998, they assigned a woman named Laura Mason to mentor me on my new role. She claimed to be a Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves and an EA-6 Prowler flight officer. The EA-6 Prowler is based on the A-6 Intruder, which is the aircraft I have been writing that I was in when we were shot down somewhere in Africa in 1986. There was Wally Simpson with his music degree and who I talked to frequently. As I have written before, the USS Cole DDG-67, struck by terrorists on 10/12/2000, was named for a Marine who started off as a Musician in the U.S. Marine Corps. My theory for several months has been that I was the Commanding Officer of the USS Cole when it was commissioned, with the rank of Commander, and my alias, used probably because of my long-term career in the U.S. intelligence community, was Stewart O'Bryan. There was my first manager at Microsoft named Jayne Donovan who kind of looked like "Captain Janeway" from "Star Trek: Voyager." She once referred to me as her "hit man." Another time she asked me if I wanted to go on a "jihad." In my first meeting with her, I was complaining vigorously about the lack of concern for accurate billing of labor in that group and she asked if I wanted to go on a "jihad" to change it. I didn't say anything in response to that question, but in hindsight, I guess that is actually what I did do. My peer mentor once characterized a conversation I had with her around that time about the group's frustrating lack of concern over accurate labor billing as "grappling" with me. I would remember that term she used when I was watching a "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode where they first referred to the towing contraption as the "grappler." Over the past few months, I decided that based on Jayne Donovan's comments, she knew that I had fought in Afghanistan against the Soviets in the 1980's. I have found references that Reagan was concerned about human rights abuses against the Afghan's and so I assume he sent me in there to fight with the mujaheddin. One good example I reviewed was that Reagan dedicated the third flight of the space shuttle, Columbia, to the Afghan people, with the flight landing on 3/30/82, which would have been when I was still a Midshipman at the USNA. I think I flew on the first five in a row. I was probably sent into Afghanistan several times in the 80's to fight or train or both the mujaheddin and I had a theory I was exploring a while back that I flew with the Pakistan Air Force against Soviet bombers that were flying into Pakistan. I have this symbolic memory of when the U.S. Navy leased some guided-missile frigates to Pakistan back in the 80's and I think that represents me flying with the Pakistan Air Force. I believe all that experience against the Soviets is why Grace Stahre wrote something to me about the Russian mafia finding me. There was Rhonda Halffman, who worked in the Premier Support for Developers that I would start working in after my first year, where my first year was with Premier Support For Enterprise. There were several of us new employees of Microsoft that went to the Microsoft office near Dallas, in Las Colinas, for indoctrination into Premier Support.

(CNN) When Ahmed Mohamed went to his high school in Irving, Texas, Monday, he was so excited. A teenager with dreams of becoming an engineer, he wanted to show his teacher the digital clock he'd made from a pencil case.
The 14-year-old's day ended not with praise, but punishment, after the school called police and he was arrested.
"I built a clock to impress my teacher but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her," Ahmed told reporters Wednesday. "It was really sad that she took the wrong impression of it."

MIDLAND, Texas — Virginia has George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation. New York has the Hyde Park estate of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Yorba Linda embraces the modest farmhouse that was Richard Nixon's childhood home. And Hodgenville, Ky., has Sinking Spring Farm, where Abraham Lincoln was born.
Today, this dry, dusty town in the aging heart of the West Texas oil patch is bidding to join the select list of communities that bask in the glow of history -- and in the golden tide of tourist dollars that may come with it. Midland, after all, was the home of not one but two American presidents: George W. Bush and his father, George H.W. Bush.
Yet the local leaders and Bush family friends behind Midland's bid for the spotlight are struggling with a problem: Just what, exactly, is the story they want to tell?
Most sites associated with the early lives of future presidents have unmistakable story lines, clear symbolic messages that help visitors understand the figures associated with them. The rude log cabin at Lincoln's birthplace -- one cramped room with a dirt floor -- underscores the humble origins of one of America's greatest presidents. The classical lines of Mount Vernon suggest the Roman virtues of the man who became the father of his country. The stateliness of Hyde Park bespeaks the noblesse oblige that moved sons of aristocrats to public service.
The house at 1412 W. Ohio Ave. in Midland is certainly a landmark. A half-century ago, it was home to the future 41st president and his wife, Barbara, the future first lady; their eldest son, George W. Bush, who became the 43rd president after serving as governor of Texas; and their second son, Jeb Bush, now governor of Florida.
And the Midland house was modest: 1,400 square feet, three bedrooms, no garage -- just a shed in back.
But promoters of the house as a historic landmark acknowledge that defining its particular story line has not been easy. Although the house itself suggests modest beginnings, the young couple that occupied it belonged to one of the most powerful families in contemporary American history, combining the wealth and power of Wall Street with a record of high public office.
