TUNNEY: Solving a problem like global warming may seem impossibly complex. So many nations, so many corporations and John Q Public will have to agree on a dizzying number of issues. So, then, what can one person really do to make a difference?

TUNNEY: What can I, with my particular and unique skills set, do to help?

(Jennifer looks at Rodney.)

KELLER: They think you're the arrogant one?!

McKAY: Hm!

TUNNEY: I've been working on a number of projects over the last decade and I realised that if I were to combine them, I just may be able to achieve something unexpected. So, ladies and gentlemen, with major funding from my friends at Kramer Innovations, I have been able to devise a means to cool our planet in a safe and controlled way.

(The audience start to murmur. Jennifer smirks at Rodney.)

KELLER: This guy wouldn't know "cool" ...

(She trails off as Rodney, frowning and intrigued, leans forward in his seat.)

TUNNEY: Now, the science behind this is immensely complex, but there will be detailed briefs handed out to you as you leave the lecture hall, but for right now, let me just give you the Cliff Notes.

(An image of the device he has invented comes up on the screen behind him.)

TUNNEY: It begins with a massive heat sink – one of my own design – which steadily draws heat from the surrounding environment.

McKAY and KELLER (simultaneously): But where does the heat go?

TUNNEY: "Where does the heat go?" you may ask. Well, my friends, that is the hard part.

(A new image appears on the screen. On the left are the words "Our Space/Time". The heat from Earth can be seen channelling along a sort of tunnel to the other side, labelled "Alternate Space/Time".)

TUNNEY: I give you the Tunney Space/Time Matter Bridge.

(Rodney stares in shock as he recognises the concept.)

McKAY: Wait. What?

TUNNEY: Now this isn't just some theoretical math proof. This is a functioning piece of technology – one that literally moves heat from our space/time and vents it out into another space/time.

McKAY: Yeah, but, that's my bridge! My sister and I came up with it!

(The man sitting beside Rodney looks round at him.)

KELLER: Shh!

Two weeks of wicked winter weather whack Washington beginning on December 17, 2008.


Over the next several days temperatures would remain frigid on both sides of the Cascades, and most of the snow that fell stayed in place. As of midnight on December 25, a total of 45.2 inches had fallen at Spokane International Airport, an all-time record. Snowplow drivers worked 12-hour shifts Christmas Day to clear the city's main arteries, and there were several reports of them being threatened by homeowners whose driveways were blocked by piles of plowed snow.

OBAMA BECOMES FIRST PRESIDENT TO WRITE A COMPUTER PROGRAM

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA told the world that everyone should learn how to code. And now he’s putting his money where his mouth is.

Earlier today, to help kick-off the annual Computer Science Education Week, Obama became the first president ever to write a computer program. It was a very simple program—all it does is draw a square on a screen—but that’s the point, says Hadi Partovi, co-founder Code.org, an organization that promotes computer science education. “All programming starts simple,” he says. “No one starts by creating a complicated game.”

Last year, Obama delivered a YouTube speech to promote Computer Science Education Week, but didn’t write any code himself. “Learning these skills isn’t just important for your future. It’s important for our country’s future,” the president said in the video. “If we want America to stay on the cutting edge, we need young Americans like you to master the tools and technology that will change the way we do just about everything.”

Obama was echoing the sentiment of the growing code literacy movement, which seeks to expand computer science and programming education throughout the world. Code literacy advocates argue that with information technology embedding itself ever deeper into our lives, everyone should learn a bit more about how computers operate. A whole industry has sprung-up around the idea, with companies offering everything from children’s games that teach the fundamentals of programming to intensive three month full-time “bootcamps” dedicated to teaching people how to code well enough to land a job.

Code.org introduced the “Hour of Code” campaign last year with the aim of convincing all students to try just one hour of programming and showing them that anyone can learn the basics. As part of the campaign, the organization created a website that compiles many different hour long tutorials, most of which were created specifically for the campaign.

Obama wrote his code part of event today organized by Code.org, which brought brought 20 middle school students from the South Seventeenth Street School in Newark, New Jersey, to the White House, where they met the president and worked on Hour of Code tutorials. Partovi says the president himself didn’t complete the tutorial from start to finish, but instead went from station to station watching the students work. He did, however, complete some of the exercises, which involved both using Google’s Blockly tool, and writing a line of code using the programming language JavaScript.

On Monday afternoon, President Obama became the first president to write a line of code.

As part of the "Hour of Code" -- an online event to promote Computer Science Education Week -- the President and Vice President joined middle-school students from New Jersey for a computer coding exercise.

President Obama spoke about the importance of strengthening STEM education, especially for girls and students underrepresented in STEM fields: "Part of what we're realizing is that we're starting too late when it comes to making sure that our young people are familiar with not just how to play a video game, but how to create a video game."
