Dwight D. Eisenhower

XXXIV President of the United States: 1953-1961

237 - Remarks Upon Arrival in Lincoln Square, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

November 14, 1955

Mr. Burgess, Mrs. Weaver, Patty, and my future permanent neighbors, I hope:

Of course, Mrs. Eisenhower and I feel deeply honored that you should turn out today to welcome us to this area where we expect to make our home and which has been so long a part of the Eisenhower family's life.

In fact, I think that my wife decided back in 1918, before many of you were born, that this was going to be our home upon retirement, but she did not give me her decision until later than that.

In any event, I am just as delighted as she that you are the people who are going to be our neighbors, God willing.

And to each of you who has come out this morning, to each of the school children who along the way have waved these little flags or his hand, or called a greeting, our very deep thanks. We are truly grateful to all of you.

Goodbye.

Note: The President spoke at 1:00 p.m. His opening words "Mr. Burgess, Mrs. Weaver, Patty" referred to William G. Weaver, Burgess of Gettysburg, Mrs. Weaver, and their daughter, Patricia.

George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Statement on the Resignation of Anthony J. Principi as Secretary of Veterans Affairs

December 8, 2004

As a valuable member of my Cabinet, Tony Principi has served as a tireless advocate for 25 million veterans. He has insisted on results, and he has gotten results. Under Tony's leadership, we have honored our veterans for their service and sacrifice by increasing and improving health care services, working to eliminate the waiting list for medical care, and cutting the disability claims backlog. I appreciate his efforts to improve access to health care for low-income veterans and those with service-related disabilities. As we fight the war on terror, Tony has played a vital role in helping to streamline the transition from military to civilian status for our newest veterans.

I thank Tony for serving our veterans and our country with integrity and dignity. He is a good man and a good friend. I am grateful to Tony, Liz, and the entire Principi family.

That explains all the crazy behavior that has surrounded me for years. They think they are the one to wake me up. Some dumbass at Microsoft even said something like that to me at work one day. We were in some training class, I can’t remember the name of it, the instructor had used me to demonstrate something about not giving in to a salesperson or something where I was the person who was non-committal. Then we broke up into groups of three to practice and this one guy said something about making breakfast in bed for me. Earlier, another guy was telling me that he had been an Apache helicopter pilot.

DR. RUDOLF FLESCH, 75, AUTHORITY ON LITERACY

By ERIC PACE

Published: October 7, 1986

Dr. Rudolf Flesch, the authority on literacy and clear writing who wrote ''Why Johnny Can't Read,'' died at Dobbs Ferry (N.Y.) Hospital Sunday night of congestive heart failure. . He was 75 years old.

Dr. Flesch, who had suffered from coronary heart disease for several years, had lived in Dobbs Ferry 35 years and also had a summer house in Port Joli, a small town in eastern Nova Scotia.

Dr. Flesch and his writings, particularly his stress on short, uncomplicated sentences, had a decided impact on writers for magazines and newspapers.

In response to his call for shorter, terser introductory paragraphs and sentences, writers and editors found themselves counting words and compressing ideas into punchier terms.

'Poor Job of Teaching'

The method took hold but had its critics. The late Lester Markel, former Sunday editor of The New York Times, once cautioned against the short and snappy sentences Dr. Flesch advocated, contending that they cost something in loss of perspective and clarity.

Over the years in interviews and letters to editors, Dr. Flesch continued to lament the state of literacy, contending it was on its way down. Dr. Flesch contended that illiteracy and near-illiteracy were widespread in the United States because, as he wrote last year in The Times, ''our schools do a poor job of teaching reading.''

He propounded the view that the method used by most of the country's schools - teaching children the meaning of whole words rather than teaching them the sounds of letters - was ''extremely inefficient.'' He advocated teaching reading by phonics - that is, by teaching the sounds of letters. Shift About 1930

''All alphabetic languages except English are taught this way,'' he observed in The Times. ''Why do we do it differently?''

About 1930, as he put it, ''our schools switched from teaching reading to teaching word-guessing, using the so-called look-and-say method rather than systematic phonics.''

''Our 60 million illiterates are the victims of our own educational establishment,'' he added.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Flesch was largely known for urging the writing of what he called ''readable'' English -writing in a style that is easy to comprehend and savor. He set out that view in his first book, ''The Art of Plain Talk,'' in 1946, and in other works. Ph.D. in Library Science

Rudolf Franz Flesch was born May 8, 1911, in Vienna, the son of Hugo Flesch and the former Helene Basch.

He earned a doctorate in law from the University of Vienna in 1933 and, after coming here in 1938, earned a Ph.D. in library science from Columbia University in 1943. He became a United States citizen in 1944.

Dr. Flesch became a freelance writer, lecturer and editorial consultant shortly after World War II, including consultant to The Associated Press.

Among his targets were ''Federalese,'' the language of bureacrats, and ''gobbledygook,'' a description of meaninglessness.

Tests on Government material, he said, furnished ''objective evidence that the mass of Government writing is incomprehensible not only to the average American, with his eighth-grade education, but also to the better-educated Government employee.''

In ''The Art of Plain Talk,'' Dr.Flesch cited this example of Federalese:

''Ultimate consumer means a person or group of persons, generally constituting a domestic household, who purchase eggs generally at the individual stores of retailers or purchase and receive deliveries of eggs at the place of abode of the individual or domestic household from producers or retail route sellers and who use such eggs for their consumption as food.''

He condensed this as, ''Ultimate consumers are people who buy eggs to eat them.''

Task Force Smith veterans reflect on war experiences

By Todd Fogle - July 8, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Army News Service July 8, 2010) -- Retired Col. Jack Doody said a person has about three very memorable events in his or her life and being part of Task Force Smith 60 years ago this month is one of his.

The first group of Soldiers to enter Korea and engage in battle in 1950 was known as Task Force Smith because they were commanded by Lt. Col. Charles Smith.

Soldiers from the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, Companies B and C, were the main units of the task force. They engaged in the battle of Osan July 5, 1950.

OSAN, South Korea (July 3, 2012) -- The lightly armed and heavily outnumbered task force that fought in the first U.S. ground battle of the Korean War was honored here today, at a 62nd anniversary ceremony.

The day before America's 236th birthday and a week after the 62nd anniversary of the start of the Korean War, U.S. and South Korean government officials, military leaders and veterans organizations gathered on the ridge line where Task Force Smith made its gallant stand against enemy forces on July 5, 1950.

Arriving by air from Japan, Task Force Smith was the first U.S. combat unit to take on invading North Korean forces.

Ronald Reagan

XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Remarks Announcing the Review of the National Security Council's Role in the Iran Arms and Contra Aid Controversy

November 25, 1986

The President. Last Friday, after becoming concerned whether my national security apparatus had provided me with a security-or a complete factual record with respect to the implementation of my policy toward Iran, I directed the Attorney General [Edwin Meese III] to undertake a review of this matter over the weekend and report to me on Monday. And yesterday Secretary Meese provided me and the White House Chief of Staff [Donald T. Regan] with a report on his preliminary findings. And this report led me to conclude that I was not fully informed on the nature of one of the activities undertaken in connection with this initiative. This action raises serious questions of propriety.

I've just met with my national security advisers and congressional leaders to inform them of the actions that I'm taking today. Determination of the full details of this action will require further review and investigation by the Department of Justice. Looking to the future, I will appoint a Special Review Board to conduct a comprehensive review of the role and procedures of the National Security Council staff in the conduct of foreign and national security policy. I anticipate receiving the reports from the Attorney General and the Special Review Board at the earliest possible date. Upon the completion of these reports, I will share their findings and conclusions with the Congress and the American people.

Although not directly involved, Vice Admiral John Poindexter has asked to be relieved of his assignment as Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and to return to another assignment in the Navy. Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North [Deputy Director for Political-Military Affairs] has been relieved of his duties on the National Security Council staff.

I am deeply troubled that the implementation of a policy aimed at resolving a truly tragic situation in the Middle East has resulted in such controversy. As I've stated previously, I believe our policy goals toward Iran were well founded. However, the information brought to my attention yesterday convinced me that in one aspect implementation of that policy was seriously flawed. While I cannot reverse what has happened, I'm initiating steps, including those I've announced today, to assure that the implementation of all future foreign and national security policy initiatives will proceed only in accordance with my authorization. Over the past 6 years we've realized many foreign policy goals. I believe we can yet achieve—and I intend to pursue—the objectives on which we all agree: a safer, more secure, and stable world.

And now, I'm going to ask Attorney General Meese to brief you.

Reporter. What was the flaw?

Q. Do you still maintain you didn't make a mistake, Mr. President?

The President. Hold it.

Q. Did you make a mistake in sending arms to Tehran, sir?

The President. No, and I'm not taking any more questions. And in just a second, I'm going to ask Attorney General Meese to brief you on what we presently know of what he has found out.

Q. Is anyone else going to be let go, sir?

Q. Can you tell us—did Secretary Shultz—

Q. Is anyone else going to be let go? There have been calls for—

The President. No one was let go. They chose to go.

Q. What about Secretary Shultz, Mr. President?

Q. Is Shultz going to stay, sir?

Q. How about Secretary Shultz and Mr. Regan, sir?

Q. What about Secretary Shultz, sir?

Q. Can you tell us if Secretary Shultz is going to stay?

Q. Can you give Secretary Shultz a vote of confidence if you feel that way?

The President. May I give you Attorney General Meese?

Q. And who is going to run national security?

Q. What about Shultz, sir?

Q. Why won't you say what the flaw is?

The Cleanliness Institute, with a mission of increasing sales of personal care products through education and press releases, was founded in New York City by Sidney M. Colgate, president of the Association of American Soap and Glycerine Producers. "The institute was short-lived," an observer noted 80 years later, "but helped give birth to the shelves of deodorants, soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, mouthwashes, teeth-whiteners, douches and antibacterial lotions that fill our pharmacy shelves today."

Chasing Dirt: The American Pursuit of Cleanliness (1995)

By Suellen Hoy

Page 141

Even more troubling was the fact that Americans had actually become cleaner. Paved streets and closed cars were the major elements in eliminating the layers of dirt and dust that had permeated so much of everyday life. Filthy, unsanitary working conditions also improved as machines took over back-breaking, sweaty jobs. Tractor-pulled graders and conveyors, instead of wheelbarrows and muscle, moved heavy loads; mechanical sweepers and bulldozers gradually replaced brooms, picks, and shovels. Thousands of jobs, which had for decades been grimy and hard, were sufficiently transformed to make soap producers anxious. And there was reason for concern inside the home, where electric lights and gas stoves began replacing kerosene lamps and coal stoves. So, although many Americans had incidentally become cleaner, the Cleanliness Institute told them they had not become clean enough.

The institute's birth on June 23, 1927, at a dinner at the Park Lane Hotel in New York City, marked "the formal inauguration of a nationwide cleanliness movement." Sidney M. Colgate, president of the Association of American Soap and Glycerine Producers, pledged "large-scale cooperation" between soap manufacturers and their guest - health officials, educators, publicists, heads of social service organizations, and representatives of women's clubs. Reminding them of the "more than one billion dollars" expended annually by Americans to keep clean, Colgate made the point that cleanliness had become good business. Important to the country's standard of living, health, and social welfare, it was also a source of potential mega-profits.

William Rehnquist

Chief justice of United States

William Rehnquist, in full William Hubbs Rehnquist, original name William Donald Rehnquist (born October 1, 1924, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.—died September 3, 2005, Arlington, Virginia), 16th chief justice of the United States, appointed to the Supreme Court in 1971 and elevated to chief justice in 1986.

Rehnquist served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. After the war, he attended Stanford University, where he was awarded bachelor’s (1948), master’s (1948), and law (1952) degrees, finishing first in his law-school class. He also received a master’s degree in political science from Harvard University in 1949. Rehnquist clerked for Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson in 1952–53, when the court was hearing cases on the constitutionality of racial segregation in public schools. During this period, Rehnquist authored a memorandum for Jackson in which he argued that the doctrine of “separate but equal,” which had been established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), should be upheld. In later years, critics of Rehnquist used this document—along with charges that, as a Republican Party election volunteer in the 1960s, he aggressively attempted to enforce Arizona’s literacy-test laws, which effectively denied African Americans and Hispanics the right to vote—in unsuccessful attempts to defeat his nomination to the Supreme Court and his elevation to chief justice. From 1953 to 1969 Rehnquist practiced law in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1969 Pres. Richard M. Nixon appointed him assistant attorney general of the Office of Legal Counsel for the Department of Justice, a post in which he distinguished himself as a staunch advocate of greatly enlarged police powers and as an opponent of civil rights legislation.

In October 1971 Nixon nominated Rehnquist to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court left by the retirement of Justice John Marshall Harlan. Given his legal and political conservatism, Rehnquist was a logical choice for Nixon, who wished to use the appointment as a way of curtailing the perceived influence of liberal jurisprudence on social policy. After extended and often heated Senate committee hearings, Rehnquist was finally confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 68–26 in December 1971. (In contrast, Nixon’s October 1971 appointment of Lewis F. Powell, Jr., to another court vacancy won near-unanimous confirmation.) Rehnquist took his seat on the court in January 1972.

Rehnquist’s reputation as a justice was based on his encyclopaedic knowledge of constitutional law, his conservative voting record, and his leadership of the court as it moved from generally liberal to mostly conservative. During the 1970s and into the ’80s, the vigorous and articulate Rehnquist formed the anchor of the court’s conservative minority bloc. His polished legal opinions and consistently conservative stance on almost all legal issues prompted Pres. Ronald Reagan in June 1986 to nominate him to replace Warren E. Burger as chief justice. In much the same way that he appealed to Nixon’s desire for a “cleaner and safer” America, Rehnquist suited Reagan’s positions on abortion rights and religious liberty, among other issues. An opponent of legalized abortion and an establishment-clause accommodationist (i.e., he favoured extending religion farther into the public sphere), Rehnquist—like other Reagan appointees—shared the president’s vision that the court’s interpretation of the Constitution and individual laws should be limited to reflect the original intent of the framers and the letter of legislative statutes, respectively. Once again, Rehnquist endured a contentious confirmation hearing, but he was approved by the Senate 65–33.

As chief justice, Rehnquist dramatically reduced the court’s caseload and improved its efficiency. With the support of other Reagan appointees (Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia, and, later, Anthony Kennedy), the court curbed the ability of Congress to expand federal authority and curtailed affirmative action. Federal laws regulating conduct as disparate as religious expression (under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act), intrastate commerce, and criminal procedure were invalidated in deference to states’ rights. In 2003, however, Rehnquist found himself in the minority in cases in which a majority of the court struck down state sodomy laws and upheld affirmative action policies. Although many conservatives had hoped that Rehnquist would lead the court in a reversal of Roe v. Wade (1973), the ruling that established the legal right to abortion, the decision of three Republican appointees in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey (1992) permitted greater legal restrictions on abortion but also reaffirmed the right found in Roe.

In “The Notion of a Living Constitution” (1976), Rehnquist articulated the role of the court in a democratic society, concluding that judicial restraint and deference to lawmaking majorities are essential elements of a responsible judicial system. The liberal concept of a living constitution, he argued, constitutes “an end run around popular government” that is “corrosive of the fundamental values of our democratic society.”

Bush Names John Roberts To Succeed Rehnquist as Chief Justice

Roberts previously nominated to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

05 September 2005

John G. Roberts, nominated in July to replace retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, was named by President Bush September 5 to replace the late William H. Rehnquist as chief justice of the United States.

Rehnquist died September 3 at age 80, after a long battle with thyroid cancer. (See related article.)

If confirmed, the 50-year-old Roberts would likely lead the U.S. Supreme Court for decades to come.

West Point

I had to look it up to find it again. I took the bus from there and I walked around the neighborhood sometimes but I had no idea where it was even located there inside the Seattle city limits. Man, that sure does take me back. Shuffling around those Seattle city streets around that place they had me living as a homeless shelter. I remember how important watching the television news was for me everyday. I remember the first few minutes I was in there after the VA hospital discharged me from the mental health unit on 27 June 2005 and I was still doped up by the psychiatrists and the way I remember it the social workers hurried me out a side door and they drove me in a car to The Theodora

If we could just figure out a better way to travel to orbit without these silly rocket boosters, we would be well on our way to exploring more of the solar system and other solar systems. Manchurian Candidate The (1962)

Tell me, Raymond. Do you remember murdering Mavole and Lembeck?
I beg your pardon, sir?
Mavole and Lembeck.
The men who were lost on the patrol.
Can you recall what happened to them?
Yes, sir.
It was a very clear action for a night action.
Captain Marco sent up some low flares,
so it was easy to see what was happening.
Bobby Lembeck got separated to the left.
Mavole went after him.
By the time he reached him, the enemy had a fix on the position.
They were killed instantly by a high mortar shell.
I don't think they ever knew what hit 'em.
Do you realise, comrade, the implications of the weapon
that has been placed at your disposal?
You may remove your head bandage, Raymond.
A normally conditioned American who has been trained to kill,
and then to have no memory of having killed.
Without memory of his deed, he cannot possibly feel guilt.
Nor will he, of course, have any reason to fear being caught.
Having been relieved of those uniquely American symptoms, guilt and fear,
he cannot possibly give himself away.
Our Raymond will remain an outwardly normal, productive, sober
and respected member of the community.
And I should say, if properly used, entirely police-proof.
His brain has not only been washed, as they say,
it has been dry-cleaned.
Thank you, Raymond. You may replace your head bandage.

Abscam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abscam—sometimes written ABSCAM—was a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sting operation that took place in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The two-year investigation was directed from the FBI's office in Hauppauge, New York, and was under the supervision of Assistant Director Neil J. Welch, who headed the bureau's New York division, and Thomas P. Puccio, head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Strike Force for the Eastern District of New York. The operation initially targeted trafficking in stolen property and corruption of prestigious businessmen, but was later converted to a public corruption investigation. The FBI, aided by the Justice Department and a convicted con-man, videotaped politicians accepting bribes from a fraudulent Arabian company in return for various political favors.

Convictions

Angelo Errichetti

Angelo Errichetti, mayor of Camden, New Jersey, was the first government official to be caught in Operation Abscam. Errichetti first accepted the bribe in exchange for obtaining a casino license in Atlantic City for Abdul Enterprises. He then introduced Abdul to Senator Harrison Williams, who also took the bait. Errichetti also introduced Michael Myers and Raymond Lederer to the company, and arranged meetings for them with the undercover agents. He also introduced the “Arab businessmen” to Frank Thompson Jr. By the middle of 1979, Errichetti had arranged meetings with an entire list of state and federal politicians who were willing to go in on the operation. The FBI set up video cameras in a hotel suite near New York's John F. Kennedy Airport to record the transactions between the undercover agents and Errichetti. He was convicted on the federal bribery charges

Adama: Yes, he was. And now we have a problem.

Tigh: A big one.

Adama: If the Cylons look like us, then any one of us could be a Cylon.

Baltar: That's, that's a very frightening possibility.

Adama: We need a way to screen human from Cylon. And that's where you come in.

Adama: (pauses) Sometimes it's too high. You know, when we fought the Cylons, we did it to save ourselves from extinction. But we never answered the question: why? Why are we as a people worth saving? We still commit murder, because of greed, spite, jealousy, and we still visit all of our sins upon our children. (we hear the voiceover in Apollo's ship) We refuse to accept the responsibility for anything that we've done. Like we did with the Cylons. We decided to play god, create life. (We see Starbuck listening in her cell.) When that life turned against us, we comforted ourselves in the knowledge that it really wasn't our fault, not really. You cannot play god, then wash your hands of the things that you've created. Sooner or later, the day comes when you can't hide from the things that you've done anymore.
