Nereid: In Depth
Nereid is one of the outermost of Neptune's known moons and is among the largest. Nereid is unique because it has one of the most eccentric orbits of any moon in our solar system. Nereid is so far from Neptune that it requires 360 Earth days to make one orbit. This odd orbit suggests that Nereid may be a captured asteroid or Kuiper Belt object or that it was greatly disturbed during the capture of Neptune's largest moon Triton.
Discovery:
Nereid was discovered on 1 May 1949 by Gerard P. Kuiper with a ground-based telescope. It was the last satellite of Neptune to be discovered before Voyager 2's discoveries four decades later.
How Nereid Got its Name:
Moons of Neptune are named for characters from Greek or Roman mythology associated with Neptune or Poseidon, or the oceans. Irregular satellites are named for the Nereids, daughters of Nereus and Doris and the attendants of Neptune.
Nereid (NEER-ee-ed) is named after the Nereids, sea-nymphs, in Greek mythology. Kuiper proposed the name when he reported his discovery.

Was it last night or the night before that I dreamed about the trigger?

In the dream, someone gave me a device that was the trigger and that I can still visualize to a certain extent although I cannot recall ever seeing such a specific device or image of a similar device. I recall vaguely that another person handed me the device and he told me of how long I would have to hold down the button that would trigger the device and I recall that I held it down for a long period of time just to be certain. I recall vaguely that the receiver device that I was using as the trigger for a large bomb was somewhere in the sky and I can visualize to some extent looking into the sky to see if I could see the receiver of the trigger I was holding but I do not recall ever seeing anything in the sky. I recall from the dream that I held down the trigger longer than was required and that I held it down for 90 seconds and I recall vaguely from the dream that the bomb did indeed detonate but I recall nothing else other than that feeling of certainty that it did explode.

RUSH: The planet has altered Destiny's course more than we hoped.

May 11 – Albert Einstein submits his doctoral dissertation "On the Motion of Small Particles...", in which he explains Brownian motion. In the course of the year, Einstein publishes four papers, formulates the theory of special relativity and explains the photoelectric effect by quantization. 1905 is regarded as his "miracle year".

October-November: Earns a little money by tutoring a student on electricity.
December: Sends Annalen der Physik another paper “On the Theory of Brownian Motion,” received December 19, published February 8, 1906. This paper improves and extends his mathematical development of the theory.

Albert Einstein's paper “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?” was published in the journal "Annalen der Physik" on November 21, 1905.
The paper revealed the relationship between energy and mass that would eventually lead to the mass-energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (energy equals mass times the velocity of light squared).
Einstein was far from being the first to propose a mass-energy relationship but he was the first scientist to propose the E = mc2 formula and the first to interpret mass-energy equivalence as a fundamental principle that follows from the relativistic symmetries of space and time.
The paper was one of Einstein’s four Annus Mirabilis papers (from Latin annus mirabilis, "Extraordinary Year"). The papers were all published in the Annalen der Physik scientific journal in 1905.
In addition to “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?” on the relationship between energy and mass, Einstein penned:
“On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light," received March 18 and published June 9, which proposed the idea of energy quanta. Einstein was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, which this paper contributed to.
“On the Motion of Small Particles Suspended in a Stationary Liquid, as Required by the Molecular Kinetic Theory of Heat," received May 11 and published July 18, which delineated a stochastic model of Brownian motion.
"On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies,” received on June 30 and published September 26, and which reconciled Maxwell's equations for electricity and magnetism with the laws of mechanics by introducing major changes to mechanics close to the speed of light. This later became known as Einstein's special theory of relativity.

2. "On the Motion of Small Particles Suspended in a Stationary Liquid, as Required by the Molecular Kinetic Theory of Heat" (Annalen der Physik, 1905) by Albert Einstein. In this paper, Einstein explained how Brownian motion occurs. Brownian motion was named for botanist Robert Brown, who noticed through his microscope in 1827 that pollen particles in water were randomly moving. He couldn't figure it out, but Einstein theorized that this motion results from the collision of the particles with the atoms that comprise the liquid. Einstein developed a mathematical model called "particle theory" to describe these random movements. Brownian motion was verified experimentally by Jean Perrin in 1908, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1926.

AT SEA ABOARD USS RONALD REAGAN IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Steve "Cinco" Ritchie, USAF, America's last combat pilot ace, flew off the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan 19 Oct. as the ship sailed home on Tiger Cruise, the last leg of its 2009 deployment.
Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Steve "Cinco" Ritchie, USAF, 67, a distinguished guest of the ship who shot down five North Vietnamese MiG-21 fighter jets in the Vietnam War in 1972, experienced a backseat familiarization flight in an F/A-18F of the "Fighting Redcocks" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 22.
"The flight was absolutely amazing," said Ritchie of the familiarization mission. "That aircraft performs better than anything I've ever flown in. The Navy impressed me a great deal."
The American aviation legend, a recipient of the Air Force Cross, four Silver Stars and 10 Distinguished Flying Crosses for heroism against the enemy, added that he was incredibly impressed with Ronald Reagan and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 14 Sailors.
"I am so proud of these men and women serving today," said Ritchie. "They are doing a job that I believe is more important than it has ever been in all of history."
During the Tiger Cruise, the Fighting Redcocks, who "adopted" Ritchie as their guest, had a chance to discuss the advancements in military aviation from the 1970s to today and pick the brain of an air-to-air combat legend.
"It was a complete honor to fly with a combat ace," said Lt. Cmdr. Brian Hodges, VFA-22's operations officer.

YOUNG'S QUARTERS. Young is sitting at his desk and writing as Camile approaches the open door. Without looking up, he speaks before she even has a chance to knock.
YOUNG: What?
WRAY (coming into the room): You should pick everyone who goes on that shuttle. It's the responsible thing to do ... and you should include yourself. If they're going to survive, they'll need leadership.
YOUNG: You're the H.R. lady, I'm guessing.
WRAY (rolling her eyes): I am not above that. I would want you to consider me, yes. I would want you to consider everyone who could contribute to their survival.
(She leans down and puts her hands on the table.)
WRAY: I think you should do your job and make the choices you need to make.
YOUNG: It wouldn't be very fair.
WRAY: It would be more unfair to send the wrong people ...
YOUNG (interrupting): We're all the wrong people.
(He holds up the sheets of paper listing all the members of the crew and brandishes them at Camile.)
YOUNG: These are the wrong people.
(Camile meets his glare firmly.)
WRAY: That's up to you.
YOUNG (lowering the list): Wow.
(He sighs.)
YOUNG: OK. OK. Who goes? I mean, other than you and me, I mean, or haven't you given it much thought?
(Camile sighs and straightens up.)
WRAY: We can come up with a shortlist; factor in skills and strengths to increase their chances of surviving. Take age and sex into consideration ...
YOUNG: How ‘bout just the people we like?

Rumsfeld quitting; will be replaced by former CIA head

WASHINGTON – President Bush said today that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was resigning and named former CIA Director Robert Gates to replace him at the Pentagon.
Bush seemed stoic about the election, proclaiming: "This isn't my first rodeo."

253 - Statement by the President Upon the Entry Into Force of the Antarctic Treaty.

I WISH to express my profound satisfaction on the occasion of the entry into force today of the Antarctic Treaty. This Treaty has now been ratified by all of the 12 countries which participated in the Conference on Antarctica held in Washington in 1959" Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States--all of which signed the Treaty at the conclusion of the Conference on December 1, 1959.
This is a significant treaty in several respects. First and foremost it provides that the vast Antarctic continent shall be used for peaceful purposes only. Accompanying this provision is the important provision whereby the parties have the right to send observers anywhere in Antarctica at any time to see that the Treaty is not being violated, and the right of overflight of all areas of Antarctica. It could very well provide valuable practical experience in the field of international inspection in other situations.
The Treaty also provides for freedom of scientific investigation and international cooperation in science in Antarctica. Nuclear explosions throughout the area are banned, pending general international agreement on the subject, although the use of nuclear energy for such purposes as heat and power is permitted.
The difficult question of territorial claims in Antarctica is in effect set aside by the Treaty, which states that nothing in the Treaty shall be interpreted as either a renunciation or recognition of claims or bases of claims. The United States has never asserted a territorial claim in Antarctica, nor has it ever recognized the claims of others. By this Treaty the United States continues to reserve its rights throughout the whole of Antarctica.
The Antarctic Treaty was conceived by the United States and the Conference at which it was drawn up was called by the United States, after nearly two years of patient and skillful preliminary negotiations. It has been signed and ratified by countries representing all of the world's six continents, many of which held divergent views on Antarctica. That this was possible I find very encouraging.
I earnestly believe that the Antarctic Treaty represents a positive step in the direction of world-wide peace, and am genuinely gratified to announce its entry into force today.
