[Planet surface]

DEHNER: It would take almost a miracle to survive here.

MITCHELL: Then I shall make one. Behold. (creates and oasis with flowers and a spring) You'll soon share this feeling, Elizabeth. To be like God, to have the power to make the world anything you want it to be.

DEHNER: What's wrong?

MITCHELL: A visitor. A very foolish man. You'll enjoy being a god, Elizabeth. Blasphemy? No. Let there be food. Kaferian apples. Whenever we visited that planet, I always favoured these. Can you hear me, James? You cannot see me. I'm not there. You follow the right path, James. You'll come to me soon.

DEHNER: I can see him in my mind, too.

MITCHELL: Go to him, Elizabeth, talk to him. Now that you're changing I want you to see just how unimportant they are.

DEHNER: Yes, it just took a little longer for it to happen to me.

KIRK: You must help me Before it goes too far.

DEHNER: What he's doing is right for him and me.

KIRK: And for humanity? You're still human

DEHNER: No, I

KIRK: At least partly, you are, or you wouldn't be here talking to me.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:15 PM
All right, so after publishing online my premise about my "Short Fuse" observation as practical application of me generating a time travel communication, I am back at the point of thinking that was also genuinely sinister criminal activity that was planned by the racketeering operation FM 102.5 KZOK radio station. There is a tremendous amount of dirty Bill Gates money available to support the Bill Gates-Nazi propaganda machine and those KZOK mobsters would sell out their own mothers to get their grubby hands on some of that Bill Gates-Nazi loot that the Bill Gates propaganda machine wants to give to them.

So my next attempt will be, along with my upcoming 5:00 AM, assuming I am still awake, observation using the method I have already noted in my journal, to make this more random. My thought now is to just find a way to generate a random four digit numerical sequence and to see what that generates. My next step is to decide how I want to generate those four numbers. I don't think I will use programming code to generate them. If I had a dart board I would just use that but I do not have a dart board. I'll think of something.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:32 PM
My first attempt was to use my archive file and with my eyes closed I was scrolling up and down for a second or two and then moving my cursor around randomly over and over and with my eyes still closed and then stopping the cursor and opening my eyes to see if my cursor had stopped over a number. Several attempts were not producing any results so I thought about it a little more and then I pulled out the phone book. Using a similar method but with a sharp pointed instrument, I flipped the pages back and forth with my eyes closed and then jabbed my sharp pointed instrument at a random point on the open page. That also took several attempts but eventually I generated the value of '5160.'

I don't know if that will be a practical value to work with though. So what am I going to use that for.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:37 PM
I just looked for matches in my journal and this is a match for a number that I generated by random:

From 3/4/1959 ( my birth date UK ) To 4/19/1973 ( premiere US film "Soylent Green" & premiere US film "High Plains Drifter" ) is 5160 days

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:38 PM
Now what am I going to do with it?

I am trying to generate a time of day and on that particular time of day I am going to listen to FM 102.5 KZOK Seattle Washington radio and listen for any details that seem to be significantly associated with the song that plays and other details that I think are significant.

So how do I turn '5160' into a time of day that happens soon this night?

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 05 April 2011 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:44 PM
My target time is 11:30 PM this night.

[JOURNAL ARCHIVE 05 April 2011 excerpt ends]

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 9:59 PM

That seems to be 215 days. 5160 divided by 24 equals 215.

So that makes a target time and date of 11:30 PM 2 September 2010.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 10:09 PM
All right, my next candidate for time travel communication is the David Letterman show episode on 2 September 2010 and with a focus on the guest Karen Elson who is with The Citizens Band.

I always tend to think of those late night television series starting at 11:30 PM, I thought to myself as I noted that the tv.com website indicates that television program begins at 11:35 PM. So my target time tonight will be 11:35 PM. I will listen for the song that is playing on FM 102.5 KZOK Seattle Washington radio at 11:35 PM tonight, which is slightly more than an hour from now.

For my next test, not including the one at 5:00 AM tomorrow morning, if I am still awake, will be a different method I thought of as I was creating this test case.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 10:16 PM
I need to think about this time adjustment I made in this next test. Those mobsters would have seen me reviewing the David Letterman show and so they might guess to schedule something tonight at 11:35 PM since they also know I am running these tests.

I will listen for both times.

I will record what is playing at 11:30 PM tonight as well as 11:35 PM.

My next test case that I implement, other than the one at 5:00 AM, will not have that problem.

Also, this test case would not have that problem if I was not using a random number that produces an even number of days.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 11:30 PM
On FM 102.5 KZOK Seattle Washington radio an advertisement about KIA cars is playing.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 11:32 PM
About 11:32:25 on FM 102.5 KZOK Seattle Washington radio the Peter Gabriel song "Solsbury Hill" has started to play after the advertisements end:

could see the city light

time stood still

eagle flew out of the night

he was something to observe

son he said grab your things I've come to take you home

walked right out of the machinery

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/05/11 11:35 PM
On FM 102.5 KZOK Seattle Washington radio about 11:35:00 the same song is still playing and I heard the specific lyrics:

I forgot about the dialog by the hysterical woman about how they were being taken to Vermont.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 02/28/10 6:43 PM
The title card for June 27th has Kareem ringing the bell and shouting warning with New York City burning in the background. The next scene has a title card also for June 27 but in Maricopa Arizona, I think it was Maricopa County, and the "Walking Dude" kills a deer standing the highway and then he seems to cause, from a distance, Kareem to fall over with a heart attack.

Then there is a dream sequence with "Stu" and I think that is the day he breaks out of the Vermont disease center to avoid being killed by the one guy.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 02/28/10 6:59 PM
It seems that June 27 was the ending of the miniseries episode titled "The Plague." After he paniced, which was more intense in the book, and then falls down on the green grass, I wasn't certain if the voice of "Mother Abagail" was him thinking about a memory of a dream or if he was really hearing her voice. I started thinking the second time it happened, by the expression on his face, that he did hear the voice, but then I think to myself he was just simply concentrating hard or something similar to the memory of the dream and thinking about the details from the dream. The episode ends with him walking barefoot and wearing sweatpants and t-shirt on the street in the dark.

Hill fort

A hill fort is a type of earthworks used as a fortified refuge or defended settlement, located to exploit a rise in elevation for defensive advantage. They are typically European and of the Bronze and Iron Ages. Some were used in the post-roman period. The fortification usually follows the contours of the hill, consisting of one or more lines of earthworks, with stockades or defensive walls, and external ditches.

The nomenclature used for the sites is given, together with their typology, chronology and locations.

The most striking feature of the 15,266-acre Quincy Lakes unit, west of the town of George, is the geology. It is a product of erosion of lava flows by glacial floodwaters. The many layers of basalt are exposed in towering 800-foot cliffs, isolated mesas

Solsbury Hill

Little Solsbury Hill (more commonly known as Solsbury Hill) is a small flat-topped hill and the site of an Iron Age hill fort. It is located above the village of Batheaston in Somerset, England. The hill rises to 625 feet (191 m) above the River Avon which is just over 1 mile (2 km) to the south. It is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It gives impressive views of the city of Bath and the surrounding area. The hill was immortalized in 1977 by Peter Gabriel in his song 'Solsbury Hill'.

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/petergabriel/solsburyhill.html

PETER GABRIEL

"Solsbury Hill"

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing stretching every nerve
Had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
(I) just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom boom boom
"Son," he said "Grab your things,
I've come to take you home."

To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
"Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."
(Back home.)

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,
they've come to take me home."

MITCHELL: My friend James Kirk. remember those rodent things on Dimorus? The poisoned darts they threw? I took one meant for you.

KIRK: And almost died. I remember.

MITCHELL: So why be afraid of me now?

KIRK: You've been testing your ability to take over the Enterprise. In the transporter room, you said something about us seeming like insects by comparison, squashing us if we got in your way.

MITCHELL: I was drugged then.

KIRK: Yes. In the Sickbay, you said if you were in my place, you'd kill a mutant like yourself.

MITCHELL: Why don't you kill me then? Mister Spock is right and you're a fool if you can't see it.

DEHNER: You don't mean that, Gary.

MITCHELL: Man cannot survive if a race of true espers is born. In time you'll understand that. (tests the forcefield)

KIRK: Gary. Gary, don't!

MITCHELL: Jim.

KIRK: His eyes went back to normal.

SPOCK: Fighting the force field drained his strength, for a while at least. He could be handled now.

MITCHELL: I'll just keep getting stronger. You know that, don't you.

The food I bought from the QFC Borg yesterday, and the time before that, in hindsight, has left me thinking of that plot element from "The Langoliers" TV miniseries. I found that to have a fair level of profound considering my current circumstances. It also reinforces a notion that I was thinking about just before or just after I awoke a few hours earlier that all the grief I feel from being away from my wife Phoebe all these years is just a few steps behind me as I run around in all directions trying to figure out how to get back to her. I have pondered a few times over whether it will suddenly just hit me like a wall. That wall I wrote off a long time ago when I was writing about a person creating some kind of anti-gravity device and when the inventor came under the influence of the anti-gravity device, then the wall to the west of him, or anything to the west of him due to the Earth's spin, was going to slam into him at about 1000 miles per hour. Later I would wonder if the friction of the atmosphere would burn him to a cinder first though. It depends how far he was away from the wall.

SPOCK: Decoding memory banks. I'll try to interpolate. The Valiant had encountered a magnetic space storm and was being swept in this direction.

KIRK: The old impulse engines weren't strong enough.

SPOCK: Swept past this point, about a half light year out of the galaxy, they were thrown clear, turned, and headed back into the galaxy here. I'm not getting it all. The tapes are pretty badly burned. Sounds like the ship had encountered some unknown force. Now, orders, counter orders, repeated urgent requests for information from the ship's computer records for anything concerning ESP in human beings.

KIRK: Extrasensory perception. Doctor Dehner, how are you on ESP?

DEHNER: In tests I've taken, my ESP rated rather high.

KIRK: I'm asking what you know about ESP.

DEHNER: It is a fact that some people can sense future happenings, read the backs of playing cards and so on, but the esper capacity is always quite limited.

SPOCK: Severe damage. Seven crewmen dead. No, make that six. One crewman seemed to have recovered. That's when they became interested in extrasensory perception. More than interested, almost frantic about it.

Statement on House of Representatives Passage of Intelligence Reform Legislation

August 4, 2007

Tonight the House joined the Senate in passing legislation that will close a critical gap in our intelligence collection, and I appreciate their efforts to complete the legislation before the August recess. The Director of National Intelligence, Mike McConnell, has assured me that this bill gives him what he needs to continue to protect the country, and therefore, I will sign this legislation as soon as it gets to my desk.

I also want to remind Congress that our work on reforming the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is not complete. When Congress returns in September, we need to work together on additional reforms, including the important issue of providing meaningful liability protection to those who are alleged to have assisted our Nation following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

NOTE: The statement referred to S. 1927.

MITCHELL: I'm thirsty. (cup slides under tap, is filled, then flies through the air to his hand) It's like a man who has been blind all of his life, suddenly being given sight. Sometimes I feel there's nothing I couldn't do, in time. Some people think that makes me a monster, don't they Jim.

KIRK: Are you reading all our thoughts, Gary?

MITCHELL: I can sense mainly worry in you, Jim. Safety of your ship.

KIRK: What would you do in my place?

MITCHELL: Probably just what Mister Spock is thinking now. Kill me while you can. (zaps Kirk and Spock with electric bolts)

DEHNER: Stop it, Gary!

MITCHELL: I also know we're orbiting Delta Vega, Jim. I can't let you force me down there. I may not want to leave this ship, not yet. I may want another place. I'm not sure yet just what kind of a world I can use.

DEHNER: Use?

MITCHELL: I don't understand it all yet, but if I keep growing, getting stronger, why, the things I could do, like, like maybe a god could do. (Kirk knocks him out)

KIRK: I want him unconscious for a while. (Dehner sedates him)

The American Presidency Project

George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Remarks on Presenting the National Teacher of the Year Award

April 23, 2001

The President. Thank you all very much. Welcome to the Rose Garden. I was wondering if it was ever going to get warm in Washington. [Laughter] It does.

Mr. Secretary, thank you, and thanks for your kind introduction and thanks for your service to the children of our country. I don't know if you know this or not, but just last week in Monticello, Mississippi, there was a school named in Rod's honor. It's the school he attended as a young man.

What makes the story interesting is that students of his generation were segregated by race. No more in this great land called America. The Rod Paige Middle School will know loud and clear that education breaks down any barrier to success. Mr. Secretary, you're a role model for students across America and for a couple of adults, as well.

Education Secretary Roderick R. Paige. Well, thank you. Thank you.

The President. And I'm proud to have you on my team.

Secretary Paige. Thank you.

The President. I'd like to thank the Council of Chief State School Officers, Scholastic, Inc., and the National Selection Committee for organizing this event. You've done a splendid job. And I want to welcome to the White House Peter McWalters, president of the Council of Chief State School Officers, and Gordon Ambach, its executive director.

And I also want to welcome and congratulate 56 teachers of the year from all across America. You know, I used to say as the Governor of Texas, you can never thank a good teacher enough. Well, I'm going to try to do it as President: Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts.

I especially want to congratulate the finalists: Christa Compton and Tonya Perry, Derek Minakami and Michele Forman, the National Teacher of the Year. I'll have a few things more to say about Michele in a moment.

For a half century, the White House has hosted a ceremony honoring the National Teacher of the Year and the State Teachers of the Year. Every American President since Harry Truman has presented this award, and that's as it should be. What we honor tells the world what we value, and we value America's teachers.

"A teacher affects eternity," Henry Adams once wrote. He meant that their influence is unending. Teachers play a vital role in the intellectual and moral education of children. They teach children how to read and write, and they teach children right from wrong. They teach students to love knowledge and to disdain ignorance. Teachers inspire students, fire imaginations, nurture their natural abilities, and encourage them to explore the possibilities of life.

They prepare good students to be good citizens. They also know, better than anyone else, they can't do it alone.

It's so important for the moms and dads of America to hear this message: Be a good parent; love your children; teach your children to read early in life; and support the teachers who are spending time with your most precious, precious part of your family.

One of my predecessors as Governor of Texas was a guy named Sam Houston. Sam Houston was a United States Senator, the Governor of two States, Texas and Tennessee. He was even a President—the President of the Republic of Texas. And yet, with all these impressive accomplishments, he wrote that being a teacher in Maryville, Tennessee, gave him a higher feeling of dignity and satisfaction than any other office or honor he ever held.

Well, this year's National Teacher of the Year, Michele Forman, demonstrates the dignity and satisfaction of teaching. Mrs. Forman teaches social studies at Middlebury Union High, in Middlebury, Vermont. She says this: "I think I have the best job in the world. Every day is something new."

Mrs. Forman arrives at school every day at 6:30 a.m., a full 2 hours before the students arrive. Three mornings a week she teaches Arabic, which she's been doing for the past 4 years. Students earn no credit by taking the course; they attend the classes because of their love of learning—and probably, mostly because of their love of Mrs. Forman.

Michele Forman knows her subjects and has high expectations for her students. She believes there must be a mutual trust between teachers and students. She's highly regarded by her colleagues. She's a woman of boundless energy and enthusiasm. In all these ways, she is an example of excellence in education.

And so it's a high honor to present to Michele Forman the National Teacher of the Year Award.

[At this point, Mrs. Forman made brief remarks.]

The President. Well, Michele, thank you very much. In keeping the fine tradition of never missing to want an opportunity— [laughter]—or to waste an opportunity, let me say a few words about a pressing issue and a great opportunity for our country.

This week the United States Senate will begin debate on what's known as S-1, appropriately named because it is my number one priority, it is your number priority, and it's an education reform proposal. This is not just about another legislative debate. It's the best opportunity in a generation for having meaningful education reform come out of Washington, DC.

And we have an ambitious goal: All our children, every child in America, must have access to a safe and high quality school, so we make sure that standards are high. It's so important to raise the bar and expect the best from every child, just like you do; that results are tested—people shouldn't fear accountability systems in America. We want to know. We want to know whether children can read and write and add and subtract. And if not, we'll make sure they do early, before it is too late, and that schools are accountable.

We give more States more flexibility and freedom. We trust teachers in the classrooms, as opposed to having mandates out of Washington. We've got to trust teachers and principals to chart the path for excellence for every child, provide greater options for parents with bipartisan support for charter schools or public school choice or private tutoring programs.

In separate legislation we are working for liability reform to support and protect teachers who enforce reasonable standards of conduct in their classrooms. We're encouraging more of America's best and brightest citizens, including those who have served in the Armed Forces, to become teachers. This is a project near and dear to my wife Laura's heart. Unfortunately, she's not here. I wish she was, because she could explain a lot better than I could, but she's out traveling the Nation, reminding people that one of the most noble professions ever is to be a teacher, and recruiting teachers. And she's doing such a good job, I need to send her up to the Congress to convince them to behave.

We'll increase spending on education and focus that new spending on reforming schools that aren't performing well or on a powerful reading initiative.

I support historic new levels of education funding. Yet all of us know better schools require more than just funding. And I hope the Senate hears that we need meaningful education reform by high standards, accountability. My education reform has a good balance of new dollars.

Now, one of the interesting things that historians learn—and Michele is an historian—is that the President proposes, the Congress disposes. But the truth of the matter is, the people rule. And I hope the people of America contact the Members of the Senate and insist upon a passage of a well-balanced, meaningful reform package that will enhance our teachers' ability to do what you do well, which is to teach our kids.

It's an honor for me to be here. I welcome you to the Nation's Capital. And once again, thanks from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of all of America, for doing the job you do.

God bless.

NOTE: The President spoke at 2:50 p.m. in the Rose Garden at the White House.

European Space Agency

Mission

COROT is the first mission capable of detecting rocky planets, several times larger than Earth, around nearby stars (planets outside our Solar System are referred to as ‘exoplanets’). It consists of a 30-centimetre space telescope. It was launched on 27 December 2006.

COROT will use its telescope to monitor closely the changes in a star’s brightness that comes from a planet crossing in front of it. While it is looking at a star, COROT will also be able to detect ‘starquakes’, acoustical waves generated deep inside a star that send ripples across a star’s surface, altering its brightness. The exact nature of the ripples allows astronomers to calculate the star's precise mass, age and chemical composition.

This technique is known as asteroseismology and ESA’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) has been taking similar observations of the Sun for years. The COROT data is therefore essential to compare the Sun with other stars.

Nereid: In Depth

Nereid is one of the outermost of Neptune's known moons and is among the largest. Nereid is unique because it has one of the most eccentric orbits of any moon in our solar system. Nereid is so far from Neptune that it requires 360 Earth days to make one orbit. This odd orbit suggests that Nereid may be a captured asteroid or Kuiper Belt object or that it was greatly disturbed during the capture of Neptune's largest moon Triton.

Discovery:

Nereid was discovered on 1 May 1949 by Gerard P. Kuiper with a ground-based telescope. It was the last satellite of Neptune to be discovered before Voyager 2's discoveries four decades later.

Encyclopædia Britannica

John Lowry Dobson

American amateur astronomer

John Lowry Dobson , (born Sept. 14, 1915, Peking [now Beijing], China—died Jan. 15, 2014, Burbank, Calif.), American amateur astronomer who fashioned large inexpensive portable reflecting telescopes that he made from common materials, including cardboard construction tubes, recycled porthole glass, Formica, plywood, PVC, and indoor-outdoor carpeting; his instruments, which were dubbed Dobsonian telescopes, became available as prototypes for stargazers and provided a view of the cosmos for passersby, who were invited to peer into the telescopes of the “sidewalk astronomer.” Dobson’s family moved from China to California in 1927. In 1943 Dobson earned a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, but his interest in Hinduism led him to become (1944) a monk in the Ramakrishna Order of the Vedanta Society in San Francisco (and later in Sacramento). There he was tasked with reconciling science with religious teachings and constructed (1956) his first telescope, using discarded items. As he became more involved in and passionate about his avocation, he was warned by his superiors to curtail his activities. To his chagrin he was ultimately expelled (1967) from the monastery, owing to his frequent absences. In 1968 he cofounded a club, the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers, which adopted a sole mission: to share the sky with the public. While continuing to live a spartan life, Dobson traveled throughout the country, lecturing and teaching and sometimes finding nighttime shelter inside the cardboard tubing of a telescope. The “Pied Piper of Astronomy” published How and Why to Make a User-Friendly Sidewalk Telescope (1991, with editor Norman Sperling).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dobson_(amateur_astronomer)

John Dobson (amateur astronomer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Lowry Dobson (September 14, 1915 – January 15, 2014) was an amateur astronomer and is best known for the Dobsonian telescope, a portable, low-cost Newtonian reflector telescope. He was less known for his efforts to promote awareness of astronomy (and his unorthodox views of cosmology) through public lectures including his performances of "sidewalk astronomy." John Dobson was also the co-founder of the amateur astronomical group, the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers.

Promotion of astronomy

The Dobsonian telescope

Main article: Dobsonian telescope

John Dobson was most notable for being the originator and promoter of a design for a large, portable, low-cost reflecting telescope, the "Dobsonian telescope". The design is a very simple, low cost alt-azimuth mounted Newtonian telescope that employs common materials such as plywood, formica, PVC closet flanges, cardboard construction tubes, recycled porthole glass, and indoor-outdoor carpet. This type of simplified altazimuth mount is also commonly referred to in amateur astronomical circles as a "Dobsonian mount". Using this construction method makes the typical Dobsonian telescope large, portable, inexpensive, very stable, and easy to manufacture. The design revolutionized the sheer size of telescopes available to amateur astronomers with the optical diameters unheard of before their appearance.

The design is named after Dobson because he is credited for being the first person to have combined all these construction techniques in a single telescope design. He was reluctant to take credit, however, pointing out that he built it that way because it was all he needed. In his own words, he jokes that he was "too retarded" to build a more sophisticated telescope with an equatorial telescope mount. With its simplicity of construction and use, the Dobsonian has become a very popular design today, particularly for large amateur telescopes.

Sidewalk astronomers

John Dobson co-founded the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers in coordination with two other people, having cheaply constructed several telescopes that were easy to use, including a 24-inch (610 mm) telescope that was built for approximately US$300. Rather than have regular meetings, the organization simply set up telescopes on the sidewalk during clear evenings, offering to show and explain the night sky to people passing by.

Unexpectedly, the Sidewalk Astronomers were invited to the Riverside Telescope Makers' meeting in 1969. The 24-inch (610 mm) Dobsonian telescope brought by the Sidewalk Astronomers was unconventional, because most telescopes at such meetings tended to be smaller, on equatorial mounts, and designed for astrophotography rather than optical viewing. Surprisingly and controversially at the time, Dobson's telescope tied in first prize for best optics. It was also awarded the runner up prize for mechanics, despite the mechanics of the telescope and its mount being relatively simple.

Sidewalk Astronomers has since become a prominent organization, recognized for its taking of astronomy to the public via "sidewalk astronomy". The current organization has members throughout the world, and continues to promote public service astronomy by putting telescopes on street corners in urban areas. Members of the organization also visit national parks giving slide show presentations, providing telescope viewing, and explaining the universe.

STS-82 Day 4 Highlights

Back to STS-82 Flight Day 03 Highlights:

On Friday, February 14, 1997, 6:00 a.m. CST, STS-82 MCC Status Report # 7 reports:

Astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith worked throughout the night in the cargo bay of the Shuttle Discovery, conducting a spacewalk lasting six hours and 42 minutes to upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope, which now contains new science instruments for an expanded view of the universe.

The first spacewalk of the second servicing mission of the Telescope began at 10:34 p.m. Central time Thursday night when Lee and Smith switched their spacesuits over to battery power. The spacewalk was slightly delayed to enable ground controllers to assess the unexpected movement of one of Hubble's solar arrays, which slewed from a horizontal to a vertical position as Discovery's airlock was depressurized. The motion was created by an apparent gust of air from the airlock, but caused no damage to the array which was repositioned horizontally.

Once outside, Lee and Smith went right to work, opening the aft shroud doors on Hubble to remove the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph and the Faint Object Spectrograph. The telephone-booth sized instruments slid out of their compartments and were replaced by two brand new instruments, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer. STIS was installed in Hubble shortly before 1 a.m. Central time, followed almost two hours later by the NICMOS. Payload controllers send commands to check the health of the two instruments, which were declared alive and well and ready for calibration over the next several weeks. The aft shroud doors were finally closed as Lee and Smith stowed the old science gear in protective containers for the trip back to Earth. With their work successfully completed, Lee and Smith returned to Discovery's airlock at 5:17 this morning to wrap up the first of four planned excursions into the Shuttle's cargo bay.

JOHNSON SPACE CENTER, Texas (CNN) -- Following a last-minute delay, two astronauts left the shuttle Discovery late Thursday on the first of four spacewalks of the Hubble Space Telescope's $350 million refurbishment.

Astronauts Mark Lee and Steve Smith, wearing bulky white spacesuits, climbed out into the shuttle's open cargo bay at 11:45 p.m. EST as the shuttle soared 360 miles above Australia.

On the Heavens

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On the Heavens (Latin: De Caelo or De Caelo et Mundo) is Aristotle's chief cosmological treatise: written in 350 BC it contains his astronomical theory and his ideas on the concrete workings of the terrestrial world. It should not be confused with the spurious work On the Universe (De mundo, also known as On the Cosmos).

According to Aristotle in On the Heavens, the heavenly bodies are the most perfect realities, (or "substances"), whose motions are ruled by principles other than those of bodies in the sublunary sphere. The latter are composed of one or all of the four classical elements (earth, water, air, fire) and are perishable; but the matter of which the heavens are made is imperishable aether, so they are not subject to generation and corruption. Hence their motions are eternal and perfect, and the perfect motion is the circular one, which, unlike the earthly up-and down-ward locomotions, can last eternally selfsame. As substances, celestial bodies have matter (aether) and form (a given period of uniform rotation). Sometimes Aristotle seems to regard them as living beings with a rational soul as their form (see also Metaphysics, bk. XII) This work is significant as one of the defining pillars of the Aristotelian worldview, a school of philosophy that dominated intellectual thinking for almost two millennia
