Too Boo or Not to Boo

Not leaving Las Vegas

The Killers didn't leave their hometown, didn't quit their (quirky) day jobs -- and it didn't hurt them.

August 26, 2004 Susan Carpenter Times Staff Writer

Two years ago, Brandon Flowers' band dumped him because he refused to move to Los Angeles. Now that original group has fallen apart, while Flowers' new band, the Killers, basks in the afterglow of its critically acclaimed debut, "Hot Fuss."

Who said you need to live in L.A. to make it in music?

Las Vegas may be the old folks home for artists long past their prime, but it's also given birth to one of the stickiest synth-pop acts to crop up since, well, the '80s -- one that's as catchy as the Cars, morbid as the Smiths and playful as the Talking Heads, but not so married to the plugged-in artificiality of that era that it's foregone the guitars.

"The whole mentality across the world is you live in America, you go to New York or L.A. I love Las Vegas, and I didn't want to leave," said Flowers, a Jekyll-and-Hyde singer / keyboardist whose understated speaking manner contradicts an electric stage persona. "With music, if you write songs, especially with the Internet and everything, you can get them out there, so I knew it was in me to write these songs and I found the right people and we all did it."

Those right people included guitarist-Banana Republic sales clerk David Keuning, bass player-blood and body part transporter Mark Stoermer and drummer-quickie wedding photographer Ronnie Vannucci. That trio joined keyboardist-hotel bellhop Flowers in late 2002 to work out their aggressions toward their day jobs in songs that eventually landed on the group's debut.

Two months since "Hot Fuss" hit the streets, the record's title seems premonitory. Straight out of the gate, it racked up rave reviews in all the major music media, and the stack of press clippings continues to grow with each stop on a tour that started last September and may well continue through next year.

"We haven't really had any major breaks," Flowers said via phone as the band traveled from New York to Rhode Island. "We've had a week off here and there, but when I get home, I tend to just look at my suitcase on the floor and not even unpack it. It's weird. It's hard to get used to. I don't know if I want to get used to it."

He'd better. Of all the groups coming up in the new new-wave scene -- Interpol, the Rapture, Franz Ferdinand -- the Killers are poised to haul it out of the college radio underground and into the mainstream, first because the timing's right and second because they have more than good looks and youth and attention in all the right places. Flowers and gang have mastered the difficult art of the perfect pop song, intersecting resonant, messed-up-relationship lyrics with hooky melodies that rattle around your brain long after the CD's stopped spinning.

At 23, Flowers is a little young to have experienced the music of the '80s in real time, but that hasn't stopped him from referencing its best elements, which he learned courtesy of a brother 12 years his senior. Thanks to him, Flowers was saved the dirty work of culling through the dreck of Haircut 100 and the Thompson Twins to get to the stuff that's stood the test of time.

While the Killers' songs aren't throwbacks, per se, nearly all of them contain a reference or two to that time two decades back when big hair and black eyeliner were de rigueur, copping Robert Smith histrionics on the album opener "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," U2-style guitar riffs in "Somebody Told Me," echo-y INXS vocals on "All These Things That I've Done" and the laissez-faire crooning of Morrissey on "Change Your Mind."

As now-sounding as they are, the Killers' early work came a little too soon in the '80s retro game for them to find an audience. As is all too common with American bands that don't fit the reigning musical mold, the band got its first break in England. In Las Vegas, its live shows had a lukewarm reception, so the group turned to the Internet, paying a music website to post their picture, bio and a demo.

A Warner Bros. scout happened upon the site and the band, liked what he heard and invited the group to L.A. to perform in a showcase for the label, which had the option of signing them.

Warner Bros. didn't bite, but in L.A., you never know who's in the audience. In this case, it was a rep for the U.K. label Lizard King, who snapped them up and spat out their first single last September. "Somebody Told Me," a fast-paced, androgynous word puzzle of a song, was an instant success, garnering them hyperbolic praise in NME, hot-off-the-presses radio airplay in England and a deal with Island Records.

Since then, the Killers have managed to penetrate the country's fortress-like radio play lists, including L.A.'s own arbiter of alt-rock, KROQ-FM, which added the group's first single in March, just moments after Island gave it to them.

Not leaving Las Vegas

The Killers didn't leave their hometown, didn't quit their (quirky) day jobs -- and it didn't hurt them.

August 26, 2004 Susan Carpenter Times Staff Writer

"They played us 'Somebody Told Me,' we hit eject on the CD player, walked it in to Tammy and said, 'Play this next.' From that moment on, it never left the airways," KROQ music director Matt Smith said. "We put 'Mr. Brightside' in about a month ago full time, and it has been massive. That really, I think, is what has launched this band to the next level is hearing a second song that was just as good if not better than the first. My guess is we could go four or five deep on this album."

Says Smith: "Amongst all this kind of new pop renaissance music, the group could be our biggest one."

Tickets for the group's two KROQ-sponsored shows at the Troubadour this weekend offer proof. Both sold out. "They went quicker than the speed of light, once posted online," Troubadour talent booker Greg Siegel said.

"I hope we can help put Las Vegas out there, that people realize they can do it, but I wish people listened to better music," Flowers said. "I love old-style songwriting, whether it's 20 years ago or 30 or 40 years. People need that. There's nothing wrong with having a great chorus and a good verse and a bridge.

"Music got far off it, and hopefully we're bringing some of it back."

The American Presidency Project

Franklin D. Roosevelt

XXXII President of the United States: 1933-1945

127 - A Message on Navy Day.

October 12, 1938

My dear Mr. Secretary:

I commend again to our countrymen the annual observance of Navy Day in accordance with the established custom of setting apart the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt for that purpose. On this eightieth anniversary of the birth of that distinguished American, it seems particularly fitting to pay tribute to the vision and foresight of one who always urged: "The work of upbuilding the Navy must be steadily continued."

We should rejoice that on this day when the Navy is at home to our .people that we are at peace with all the world. But within the past year unsettled world conditions have made it imperative that we take stock of our national defense and face the facts. This survey of defense requirements was brought to the attention of the Congress with the result that an increase in strength of the Navy was authorized in approximation of the needs and responsibilities of our country. I believe it entirely consistent with our continuing readiness to limit armaments by agreement, that we maintain an efficient Navy adequate in men and material to insure positive protection against any aggressor. The Fleet must be ready.

Navy Day brings vividly to mind my pleasant official and personal association with the Navy. The lasting impression that I received of the Navy's efficient work in the stress and strain of war, strengthens my faith in its capacity to meet emergencies. I wish again to express my thanks and that of my fellow countrymen for the Navy's past achievement. The competent leadership that directs our forces afloat and ashore is to be commended.

War will be avoided by all honorable means, but should it come, I feel assured that the efficiency and devotion to duty of officers and men of the Navy will more than justify the confidence of our citizens in their first line of defense.

Very sincerely yours,

The Honorable,

The Secretary of the Navy,

Washington, D. C.

Dear Senator Murray,

Eventually I quit my job at Microsoft and moved away to another town to get away from it all. I was really getting creeped out by all of it. But then, after I arrived in Spokane, where I planned to start over again, I realized it was all still happening. People were still reading my personal emails and hacking into my computer. Then I realized that people were following me on the road. I could not go into any store or go any place without realizing that people there knew who I was. I would go through the drive-thru at a fast food place and I could tell they knew who I was. It is maddening. Even now, as I draft this letter and collect my thoughts, people are reading the draft versions through interception by hacking my computer. I know they are doing it.

Also, I have been thinking more today about how I have reacted to memories I still have of the time period before 6/13/2005.

I think of that change now as being some kind of loss of context. Not so much a fragmentation of memory but a loss of context about memory. A key fact changed and so that causes my mind to ignore certain facts about before 6/13/2005.

CHAPTER 2

"So, what are they doing now?"

"Hiding," Popov answered. "For the most part, hiding.

Some may have jobs of one sort or another-probably menial ones, I would imagine, despite the university education most of them have."

"I wonder…" A sleepy look reflected the man's own imbibing, so skillfully delivered that Popov wondered if it were genuine or not.

"Wonder what?"

"If one could still contact them…"

"Most certainly, if there were a reason for it. My contacts" - he tapped his temple - "well, such things do not evaporate." Where was this going?"Well, Dmitriy, you know, even attack dogs have their uses, and every so often, well" - an embarrassed smile - "you know…"

In that moment, Popov wondered if all the movies were true. Did American business executives really plot murder against commercial rivals and such? It seemed quite mad… but maybe the movies were not entirely groundless…

"Tell me," the American went on, "did you actually work with those people-you know, plan some of the jobs they did?"

"Plan? No," the Russian replied, with a shake of the head. "I provided some assistance, yes, under the direction of my government. Most often I acted as a courier of sorts." It had not been a favored assignment; essentially he'd been a mailman tasked to delivering special messages to those perverse children, but it was duty he'd drawn due to his superb field skills and his ability to reason with nearly anyone on nearly any topic, since the contacts were so difficult to handle once they'd decided to do something. Popov had been a spook, to use the Western vernacular, a really excellent field intelligence officer who'd never, to the best of his knowledge, been identified by any Western counterintelligence service. Otherwise, his entry into America at JFK International Airport would hardly have been so uneventful.

"So, you actually know how to get in touch with those people, eh?"

"Yes, I do," Popov assured his host.

"Remarkable." The American stood. "Well, how about some dinner?"

449 - Remarks at the Congressional Picnic

June 15, 2011

Hello, everybody! Welcome to the White House. First of all, I take full responsibility for the weather. [Laughter] What a spectacular day for a congressional picnic. This is always one of the best events of the year for us, mainly because with all the work that we do with Members of Congress and their staffs, all too often, we don't get a chance to say thank you to the families.

And we understand that public service is tough on the families, in some ways tougher.

Dying NASA director comes clean on climate change

By JAKE ELLISON, SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF Updated 6:06 pm, Monday, January 18, 2016

Facing impending death from cancer and knowing firsthand the challenges and anthropogenic devastation awaiting future humans, acting director of NASA's Earth Sciences Division Piers Sellers, says he doubts warming can be limited to 2 degrees Celsius and that "it will be up to the engineers and industrialists of the world to save us."

Sellers wrote in the NY Times on Sunday

"They must come up with the new technologies and the means of implementing them. The technical and organizational challenges of solving the problems of clean energy generation, storage and distribution are enormous, and they must be solved within a few decades with minimum disruption to the global economy. This will likely entail a major switch to nuclear, solar and other renewable power, with an electrification of our transport system to the maximum extent possible."

He gives policy makers their due, but holds the best hope for humanity lies with science.

"These engineers and industrialists are fully up to the job, given the right incentives and investments. You have only to look at what they achieved during World War II: American technology and production catapulted over what would have taken decades to do under ordinary conditions and presented us with a world in 1945 that was completely different from the late 1930s."

Putting our hopes on a technological fix is a hard pill to swallow.

When overwhelming evidence arises that you had better stop boozing it up because it's destroying your liver, we all fully expect an individual to stop drinking. We don't blithely hope for a liver transplant or some new technology to save the person. (BTW, Sellers is dying of Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, so this in not a metaphor about his health.)

But that's exactly what we're doing in the face of climate change. We're simply not going to cut back on oil and coal consumption and are hoping for a technological bailout.

So people like Bill Gates and dozens of the world's other super-rich are pooling resources to fund basic research in science and technology in order to find a silver-bullet that will wean us from fossil fuels and perhaps fix our carbon problem.

But what about the rest of us who are not a scientists or engineers? What about the political process that led to a historic agreement in Paris in December?

Sellers finds some hope in the fact that policy makers did pay attention to science in building up the Paris accord and wants to believe that will matter ...

"Last year may also be seen in hindsight as the year of the Death of Denial. Globally speaking, most policy makers now trust the scientific evidence and predictions, even as they grapple with ways to respond to the problem," he wrote.

But, in the end, humans will need a technological fix. What then do the rest of us do?

Basically, he said, prepare for the worst — flooded cities, acidic oceans, raging random storms and hard hard droughts. And, prepare to use alternative energy or do without as much of the energy we have now. These changes will either bring out the worst in us or we'll pull together and save as much of the human world as we can.

Plot Summary

A remake of The Killers (1946) which itself was inspired by the Ernest Hemingway short story. Told instead from the hitmen's point of view, the killers decide to find out why their latest victim (a race car driver) "just stood there and took it" when they came to shoot him.

Simon van der Meer

Born: 24 November 1925, the Hague, the Netherlands

Died: 4 March 2011, Geneva, Switzerland

Affiliation at the time of the award: CERN, Geneva, Switzerland

Prize motivation: "for their decisive contributions to the large project, which led to the discovery of the field particles W and Z, communicators of weak interaction"

Field: experimental particle physics

Prize share: 1/2

Discovered the W and Z Particles

According to modern physics, there are four fundamental forces in nature. The weak interaction, responsible for e.g. the beta-decay of nuclei is one of them. According to the theory forces are mediated by particles: the weak interaction by the so called heavy bosons W, Z, about 100 times more massive than the proton. Simon van der Meer developed a method to accumulate a large number of energetic antiprotons in an accelerator ring. These were used in experiment where antiprotons and protons of high energy were brought to collide. In these experiments W and Z particles were discovered in 1983.

Sylvester, unless you want
to renew your partnership
with the late Johnny North,
I suggest you tell us everything
and anything we want to know.
How did he meet her?
It was out in California.
The big race.
We had a good chance.
Johnny was hot, the iron was hot.

THE KILLERS

"Smile Like You Mean It"

Save some face, you know you've only got one
Change your ways while you're young
Boy, one day you'll be a man
Oh girl, he'll help you understand
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

Looking back at sunsets on the Eastside
We lost track of the time
Dreams aren't what they used to be
Some things sat by so carelessly

Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

And someone is calling my name
From the back of the restaurant
And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in
And someone will drive her around
Down the same streets that I did
On the same streets that I did

Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it

Oh no, oh no no no
Oh no, oh no no no
