The Paradise Syndrome [ Star Trek: The Original Series ]

Stardate: 4842.6

Original Airdate: Oct 4, 1968

[ Opening scenes ]

[Planet surface]

(Conifers stand on the slopes down to a lake, where three figures beam down onto a trackway.)

MCCOY: Look at those pine trees.

KIRK: And that lake.

MCCOY: I swear that's honeysuckle I smell.

KIRK: I swear that's a little orange blossom thrown in. It's unbelievable. Growth exactly like that of Earth on a planet half a galaxy away. What are the odds on such duplication?

SPOCK: Astronomical, Captain. The relative size, age and composition of this planet makes it highly improbable that it would evolve similarly to Earth in any way.

MCCOY: What in blazes is that?

(A bizarre structure on a dais, with steps leading up to it.)

KIRK: Analysis, Spock.

SPOCK: An alien metal of some kind. An alloy resistant to probe. Readings can't even measure its age accurately. These incised symbols are fascinating. Evidently, some form of writing.

KIRK: Any theories about what it is?

SPOCK: Negative, Captain. Structures of this complexity require extremely sophisticated building apparatus, the kind usually found in cultures surpassing or equalling our own.

MCCOY: Meadows and no meteor craters. The whole place is an enigma, biologically and culturally.

KIRK: What's the nearest concentration of life forms, Mister Spock?

SPOCK: Bearing one one seven mark four.

KIRK: And how much time did you say we have to investigate?

SPOCK: If we are to divert the asteroid which is on a collision course with this planet, we must warp out of orbit within thirty minutes. Every second we delay arriving at the deflection point compounds the problem, perhaps past solution.

KIRK: You did say thirty minutes?

SPOCK: Yes, sir.

KIRK: Then let's go. Let's find out what life forms are blessed by this environment.

(Standing on the opposite side of the lake from a collection of tipis and a lodge.)

MCCOY: Why, they look like. I'd swear they're American Indians.

SPOCK: They are, Doctor. A mixture of Navajo, Mohican, and Delaware, I believe. All among the more advanced and peaceful tribes.

KIRK: It's like discovering Atlantis or Shangri-la. Mister Spock, is it possible there's a more evolved civilisation somewhere else on this planet, one capable of building that obelisk or developing a deflector system?

SPOCK: Highly improbable, Captain. Sensor probes indicate only one type of life form here.

MCCOY: Shouldn't we contact them, Jim? Tell them?

KIRK: Tell them what? That an asteroid's coming to smash their world into atoms?

SPOCK: Too primitive to grasp the concept of space flight, Doctor. Our appearance here would only confuse and frighten them.

KIRK: We've got a job to do. Let's get back to the Enterprise.

(Along the path.)

MCCOY: What's the matter, Jim?

KIRK: What? Oh, nothing. It's just so peaceful, uncomplicated. No problems, no command decisions. Just living.

MCCOY: Typical human reaction to an idyllic natural setting. Back in the twentieth century, we referred to it as the Tahiti Syndrome. It's particularly common to over-pressured leader types, like starship captains.

KIRK: Ah, the Tahiti Syndrome. Let's go take care of that asteroid. But first I want another look at that obelisk.

(Inside the obelisk chamber, Kirk starts to stand and is hit by and electrical discharge. He collapses across a control panel.)

Captain's Log, stardate 4842.6. First Officer Spock commanding. Numerous search parties and repeated sensor probes of the area have failed to locate Captain Kirk.

[Obelisk]

(Spock is standing where Kirk was when he disappeared.)

SPOCK: Spock to Enterprise.

SCOTT [IC]: Enterprise. Come in, Mister Spock.

SPOCK: Prepare to beam us up, Mister Scott. We're warping out of orbit.

MCCOY: Leaving? You can't be serious, Spock.

SPOCK: Doctor, that asteroid is almost as large as your Earth's moon. Far enough away, the angle necessary to divert it enough to avoid destruction is minute, but as the asteroid approaches this planet, the angle becomes so great that even the power of a starship

MCCOY: The devil with an asteroid! It won't get here for two months, Spock!

SPOCK: If we arrive at the deflection point in time, it may not get here at all.

MCCOY: In the meantime, what about Jim?

SPOCK: Once the asteroid has been diverted, we'll return here and resume the search.

MCCOY: That may be hours from now. He may be injured or dying.

SPOCK: (picking up two stoned to illustrate his point) Doctor, assume this is the planet we're on. This is the approaching asteroid. If we don't get to that deflection point in time, it will become physically impossible to divert this asteroid. In that case, everyone on this planet will die, including the captain.

MCCOY: Can a few more minutes matter, Spock?

SPOCK: In the time it's taken me to explain the problem, the asteroid has moved from here to here. The longer we delay, the less the likelihood of being able to divert it. Beam us up, Mister Scott.

[Obelisk chamber]

KIRK [OC]: (dazed and confused) Where am I? What place is this? What are these? (phaser and communicator) I feel should know. They're familiar and yet unfamiliar. How did I get here? Who am I? Try to remember.

(He finds a flight of stairs and walks up, out into the sunshine)

Hi Desiree,

Everything still on track for me to move-in?

I am turning in my keys here on Thursday and then I am planning to be at your office at 9 am on Friday the 27th.

By the way, I don’t really have any questions for Deputy Johnston. I won’t be there myself for his presentation but it sounds like he is going to lecture the crowd about the dangers of Facebook. I mean, Cristel sort of helped him with that point.

I guess if I was there I would ask him to elaborate on the dangers of improperly secured hidden camera systems. I don’t have any specifics questions though. I doubt the Spokane Valley police are even concerned about such matters.

MATT: I've been having this feeling. I don't know how to describe it.

NICHOLAS: Something's not quite right.

(Matt hurries over to the desk and leans on it.)

MATT: Yes, yes, something's definitely wrong here, and I'm ... to tell you the truth, I think I'm ... I think I'm losing it.

(He stares at the other man anxiously. Nicholas puts his pencil into his notebook thoughtfully.)

NICHOLAS: Have you spoken to your father?

MATT: Every time I try to say something, he tells me everything's great; I should just be happy.

NICHOLAS: Ah. The sage advice of great men.

MATT: But I can see it in his eyes.

(He bites his lip again, looking down as he thinks about his situation. Finally he raises his eyes again.)

MATT: Oh, I am scared.

(He draws in a terrified breath.)

NICHOLAS: Well, you know, I'm not a great man, Matthew, but I can tell you that fear - well, it's just one of those things in this world that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you're truly alive. And I can tell you that you're alive ... until you're dead.

(He looks at Matt intently.)

NICHOLAS: You are gonna die, Matthew. We all will ... eventually.

MATT (lost in thought): Uh. Yeah.

NICHOLAS (slamming his notebook down on the desk): So, seven o'clock, then.

(Matt looks up at him.)

NICHOLAS: The "dearly beloved" business.

MATT: I'll be there.

NICHOLAS (grinning): Your whole self, please.

DESTINY. Brody, Young and Lisa are watching the footage from the Kino which has flown high above the ground and is filming the area below as it is returning to the Stargate. Night has fallen but there appears to be a bright moon because the footage is clear: there are plants rising out of the ground everywhere around the area. Although they are spread far apart, there is a lot of them and they hiss and snarl as the Kino zooms over their heads. Lisa pauses the footage.

PARK: What we can see above ground must only be a fraction of the whole organism. The bulk of it has to be like an enormous root system that extends outward from the flora, dormant until its prey gets close enough to get stung and survive just long enough to spread spores. I don't even wanna think about what it could do aboard ship.

YOUNG: What do you think it is: plant, animal?

PARK: Maybe properties of both, like coral, except its growth rates max right up against the laws of thermodynamics. It spreads upon contact and it resisted every chemical T.J.'s exposed to it.

YOUNG: Well, let's hope it burns.

Dan: How did you get appointed to the bench?

Harry: You know Dan, that's a funny story. It was the mayor's last day in office and it was a Sunday and my name was at the bottom of the list of a 1,000 candidates. So they start calling folks starting at the top of the list. You see it's Sunday and no one's home. So they keep calling down the list, name by name. No one answers. Finally they get down to the bottom of the list and voila.

Lana: You mean you were appointed a judge because…

Harry: I was home.

Not a bad bit of rescuing, huh?
You know, sometimes I even amaze myself.
That doesn't sound too hard.
Besides, they let us go.
It's the only explanation for the ease of our escape.

EPISODE NUMBER - 205

ORIGINAL U.S. AIR DATE - 10.26.10

On the alien planet we get another look at the growths on Scott's arm. It looks as if a blue fungus has covered his upper forearm. He is now lying still with his eyes closed and T.J., wearing medical gloves, has her fingers pressed to the pulse on his neck.

JOHANSEN: OK, he's out again. Guys, we can move him.

(Standing up, she moves out of the way as the men move towards him. Chloe goes over to T.J.)

ARMSTRONG: You'll be able to help him once we're back on the ship, right?

RUSH: We can't risk taking him on board. It's too dangerous.

ARMSTRONG: What?!

JOHANSEN: Rush is right. You saw how quickly the organism spreads on contact. It could take over the whole ship.

ARMSTRONG: He can't stay here, either!

GREER: Chloe.

(He hands her his rifle and bends down to Scott, then looks at Eli and Volker who are also bent down.)

GREER: Are you ready? One, two, three.

(Between them, they lift Scott's unconscious body, Greer holding his shoulders, Eli his legs and Dale supporting his torso and backside. The girls grab the bags containing T.J.'s medical kit and other equipment.)

GREER: We got you.

(Eli nods.)

GREER: Go.

(Eli turns and begins to stumble in the direction of the Stargate. Volker and Greer follow, Ronald encouraging the younger man to lead them away more quickly.)

GREER: Come on, come on, move your feet, Eli, come on.

WALLACE: OK!

(Rush takes his bag over to the girls for them to carry.)

RUSH: I'll run ahead, contact Destiny, try to get them to send back medical supplies. If I'm fast, I'll get back before you reach the Gate, OK?

JOHANSEN: Yeah-yeah, good, go.

(Rush jogs towards the men carrying Scott.)

RUSH: Eli.

WALLACE: Yeah. Whoa, stop.

(The men stop momentarily so that Rush can catch them up.)

RUSH: Remote.

(He digs in Eli's jacket pocket to get the remote device from it.)

RUSH: OK.

(He chases off as the others start to stumble onwards with their load. Somewhere nearby, something hisses and rattles ominously.)

CLOVERDALE. Matt leads the others into the family house. He looks around the kitchen appreciatively as he passes through.

MATT: Wow. Oh, this hasn't changed one bit!

(Grinning, he continues into the sitting room. Eli follows him, camera raised to his shoulder as he films.)

ELI: Matt is clearly moved seeing the old homestead again.

An arctic cold front poised just north of the Canadian border is going to drop southward today, bringing gusty northeast winds to the wind-battered Inland Northwest starting this afternoon.

This comes on the heels of a moderate snowstorm early Tuesday that slickened roads and added to the region’s weather woes.

More than 20,000 power customers remain in the dark on the eighth day after the Nov. 17 windstorm.
