Stargate Universe - Earth - television series Season 1 Episode 7 - Aired Nov 06, 2009 on Syfy

Episode Summary

The Ancient communication stones are used to allow a few crewmembers' consciousnesses to return to Earth to go over a risky plan that could bring the crew home.

(from internet transcript)

TELFORD: If this plan has any chance of succeeding ...

RUSH: ... which it doesn't. Control over most of the ship's operational systems is limited at best. Navigation, propulsion and many others have been locked out entirely by a master code which we have had no luck in breaking.

TELFORD: Thought you might wanna know we've come up with a way of draining the power.

RUSH: Yes, so I heard. Many of the power conduits have been badly damaged, and firing the ship's weapons system - without either repairing them or isolating the damaged areas - would be prohibitively dangerous.

TELFORD: Yeah, that's what we're working on right now. Just wanted to keep you informed.

(He walks away.)

EARTH. Eli is sitting in a car with Major Green. They have parked outside Eli's house.

Should we go back to the moon?

Mike Bebernes Editor, Yahoo News 360 July 19, 2019

The 360 is a feature designed to show you diverse perspectives on the day’s top stories.

Speed read

What's happening: Saturday marks the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. On July 20,1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. The moment stands as one of the signature events in American history and marked a major breakthrough in scientific achievement.

A total of 24 astronauts visited the moon between 1968 and 1972, and 12 of them walked on its surface. Since then, NASA has focused on other forms of space exploration, such as deep-space telescopes, rovers and unmanned spacecraft that travel the solar system.

In March, Vice President Mike Pence announced the goal of sending American astronauts back to the moon by 2024. NASA's plan involves returning to the lunar surface, as well as establishing a space station in the moon's orbit that one day could serve as a waystation for a mission to Mars.

China, India, Russia and European countries have also announced plans for lunar exploration. A number of private aeronautics companies have joined the pursuit as well.

This story has augmented reality! Tap the video above to see how it looks and download the Yahoo News app to launch the full experience. Augmented reality is currently available to iPhone users (iPhone 8 and later) with the latest version of iOS.

(To see a longer version of this augmented reality experience, check out Time's new immersive app.)

Why there's debate: Advocates for returning to the moon see it as a vital step toward humankind's future pursuits in space, both as destination itself and as an opportunity to test new technology for human excursions into deeper space. Some scientists believe recently discovered water on the moon could provide hydration for long-term stays on the surface or that the hydrogen and oxygen could be split to create fuel.

Partnerships with private companies could help reduce the burden of lunar missions on taxpayers, some argue. Others point to a strong likelihood that other nations — in particular China — appear destined to go to the moon in future decades, which would give scientific and strategic advantages the United States might not be able to consider currently.

Skeptics warn of the extraordinary expense to send humans back to the moon — the Apollo missions cost the equivalent of $228 billion in today's dollars. Others believe the political will that powered lunar missions in the 1960s just doesn't exist anymore. There are also significant technological hurdles to overcome, many say, if the United States wants to do anything more than short visits like it did 50 years ago.

What's next: Pence's goal of returning to the moon by 2024 will be a difficult challenge to meet, scientists say. Any delay could put the entire mission in jeopardy, since the president who comes after Trump may not prioritize human space flight. NASA hopes to have the first major technical element of the mission — a super-powered rocket that will propel astronauts and spacecraft out of earth's gravity — operational by 2020 or 2021. The agency said that if Americans do return to the moon, the group will include the first woman to walk on its surface.

Perspectives:

The discovery of water changes what's possible from lunar exploration

"A primary impetus for a moon stampede now? The discovery that there is water there, especially ice deep within polar craters where the sun never shines. That is a potentially invaluable source of drinking water for future astronauts visiting the moon, but also for water that can be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen." — Kenneth Chang, New York Times

Government support could revolutionize the aerospace industry

"Some in the private sector see government plans for space as opening up a new frontier for industry and investment similar to federal support for the first transcontinental railway in the 19th century and federal airmail contracts that subsidized the growth of commercial airlines in the 1920s." — Wall Street Journal

NASA must overcome enormous hurdles to return humans to the moon

"[NASA] does not have a rocket ready to fly humans into deep space, and it has not developed a lunar lander since the Apollo programme ended in 1972. Then there is Congress, which controls NASA’s budget and seems increasingly uninterested in paying for the Moon mission." — Alexandra Witze, Nature

The plan may be too expensive

"The total cost of sending humans to the moon by 2024 is likely to be between $20 [billion] to $30 billion. It's unclear if Congress will appropriate that money, or where it would come from. Democratic lawmakers seem determined not to cut NASA's other science and STEM missions to pay for exploration." — Jacqueline Feldscher, Politico

A symbol of U.S. greatness would be tarnished if China dominates a new era of moon missions

"If China gets to the moon and America is not there, then Apollo, which signified America’s greatness in 1969, will come to signify lost greatness instead." — Oliver Morton, MIT Technology Review

The moon could be a testing ground to develop strategies for deep space travel

"A return to the moon would allow NASA to not only test out technologies and habitation systems in preparation for a trip to Mars, but would also allow astronauts to explore whether there is enough water ice on the celestial body to break down and use for life support (oxygen) and propulsion (hydrogen)." — Alex Stuckey, Houston Chronicle

International cooperation would maximize the benefits of lunar exploration

"To ensure that our nation’s values are enshrined in space governance, the White House and Congress must together reduce needless barriers to engagement with China and other competitors, ideally through reinvigorated U.S. diplomacy within the framework of existing U.N. treaties and committees. Collaboration, not conflict, is the sustainable path forward to the moon." — Editorial, Scientific American

Waste left behind by Apollo astronauts could hold secrets to extraterrestrial life

"With the Apollo 11 moon landing, we took microbial life on Earth to the most extreme environment it has ever been in. ... If microbes can survive on the moon, can they survive interstellar travel, making them capable of seeding life across the universe, including on places like Mars?" — Brian Resnick, Vox

A permanent base on the moon may lead to extraordinary benefits on Earth

"This coming age of space exploration will see humans return to the moon — for good. We will see an era of sustained exploration where people live and work on the moon for extended periods of time. And this exploration will be a search for good, resulting in capabilities that improve life on Earth just as the Apollo missions did." — Kaigham J. Gabriel, Space.com

COMPACT DISC IS 25 YEARS OLD

An obsolete form of optical media known as the "Compact Disc" celebrates its 25th birthday tomorrow. In a press release issued Thursday, Philips said a staggering 200 billion of them were produced (194 billion accounted for by AOL signup disks) since the first one was stamped off the production line on Aug. 17, 1982.

"The first CD to be manufactured at the plant was “The Visitors” by ABBA. By the time CDs were introduced on the market in November 1982, a catalogue of around 150 titles – mainly classical music – had been produced. The first CDs and CD players – including Philips’ CD100 – were introduced in Japan in November, followed by a US and European market introduction in March of 1983."

Though the CD is well past its prime, the form factor and basic technology saw renewal in the DVD and, later, next-gen formats such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. Anyone remember how the thing was originally marketed as being indestructible? And remember those green pens that audiophiles would pay $19.99 for under the belief it would make the data sound better? Good times, man.

Stargate SG-1 - Children of the Gods - television series premiere Season 1 Episode 1 - Sunday 27 July 1997

Episode Summary

The System Lord Apophis launches an attack through the Stargate, tucked away by the military after the events of the movie, and the SGC program is reactivated and given a new objective - seek out and find the alien invaders and defeat them. Jack O'Neill is called out of retirement and sent to locate Daniel Jackson on Abydos.

(from internet transcript of incomplete dialog)

HAMMOND: I thought he was dead. Gentlemen, which is it?

JACKSON: Oh, he's dead, he's definitely dead. I mean, the bomb... (to O'Neill) I mean, he's got to be dead, right?

HAMMOND: Then who's coming through the Stargate?

JACKSON: (almost to himself) Gods.

Surprised, O'Neill and Carter turn to stare at Daniel. Hammond looks confused.

HAMMOND: What?

Kawalsky and the other officers give Daniel skeptical looks.

JACKSON: Not as in... "God" god. Ra played a god, the sun god. He - borrowed the religion and culture of the ancient Egyptians he brought through the Gate, and then he used it to enslave them. You see, he wanted the people of Abydos to believe that he was the only one.

CARTER: So you're saying... Ra's not the last of his race after all?

KAWALSKY: Maybe he's got a brother Ray.

Some of the officers chuckle.

O'NEILL:(sarcastically) That's what we need.

JACKSON: Wait a minute. The legend goes... Ra's race was dying. He survived by taking over the body of his human host, an Egyptian boy. But who's to say more of his kind couldn't do the same thing? I mean, uh, this - it could happen any time, anywhere there's a Gate, I mean... this could be happening right now.

HAMMOND: Colonel, you've had the most experience in fighting this hostile. Assuming you'd have to defend yourself in the field, are you up to it?

O'NEILL:We beat 'em once.

HAMMOND: I'll take that as a "maybe."

When America First Met the Microchip

At the time, few knew it would change the world.

JUNE 18, 2009

The following article is adapted from Chapter 10 of Fred Kaplan’s new book, 1959: The Year Everything Changed. To learn how he came to write about that year, see “ 1959: I swear, it really is the year everything changed.”

On March 24, 1959, at the Institute of Radio Engineers’ annual trade show in the New York Coliseum, Texas Instruments, one of the nation’s leading electronics firms, introduced a new device that would change the world as profoundly as any invention of the 20th century—the solid integrated circuit, or, as it came to be called, the microchip.

Without the chip, the commonplace conveniences of modern life—personal computers, the Internet, anything involving digital technology and displays, even something as simple as the handheld calculator—would be the stuff of science fiction.

Arnold Meyer Spielberg (born February 6, 1917) is an American electrical engineer instrumental in contributions "to real-time data acquisition and recording that significantly contributed to the definition of modern feedback and control processes". For General Electric he designed, with his colleague Charles Propster, the GE-225 in 1959.

GE-200 series

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Background

The series was designed by a team led by Homer R. “Barney” Oldfield, and which included Arnold Spielberg (father of film director Steven Spielberg). GE chairman Ralph J. Cordiner had forbidden GE from entering the general purpose computer business, rejecting several proposals by Oldfield by simply writing "No" across them and sending them back. Oldfield, somewhat deceptively, claimed that the GE-200 series would be industrial control computers. By the time Cordiner found out otherwise, it was too late and the machine was in production; Cordiner fired Oldfield at the product rollout. Even though the machine was selling well, Cordiner ordered that GE leave the computer business within 18 months (it actually took several years).
