So, I've have established clearly that my official United States Navy documents as Kerry Burgess indicate I began on 03/24/1990 separation leave from active duty United States Navy.
I have described the memories I still have in my conscious mind of visualizations of that final day.
My enlistment did not end officially until 05/14/1990 but I had almost 2 years vacation time saved up and I used it all at the end of my enlistment. Since I would not be returning to a US Navy base, I was separated and on leave beginning 03/24/1990. I still had an official United States Navy identification card but I was ordered to return it by postal mail after 05/14/1990.
The point here is to describe my theory that the day I can visualize leaving the now-defunct Charleston Naval Station, South Carolina, flinging my uniform hat from the overpass after I drove through the main security checkpoint of the base, was the day Friday 03/23/1990.
Watching the live television news Channel 2 CBS Spokane made me think of details that caused me to find for the first time the operative details of this post. For several hours today I worked on another post about Dam Neck but I haven't finished it yet.
There's probably more to this topic but what's the point of putting more work into it.
I have seriously seriously SERIOUSLY today considered the possibility of turning OFF this blog too as the single bulwark against the insanity of you monkeys infesting this planet Earth.
But I really really reallllly REALLY do not want to deactivate this blog. This is the only source I have to try to understand why the hell I am here. How I got here. The answer HAS GOT TO BE somewhere out there on the internet. This blog is my outlet for trying to find the answers I know must be out there. This blog ANSWERS MANY QUESTIONS but still there is pivotal information that is missing, I can only guess and that haunting feeling drives me to continue. Until something else makes me want to stop.
What else can I do? I used to have a very good career that I wanted to have since I was a child and I succeeded. Then the 878 days. Very unfair that as an old man I would have to start over again at the bottom, competing against kids half my age. Yesterday, I got out of the hospital, back in 2006, moved into a little room with nothing but a new laptop computer, a few t-shirts and athletic shorts I bought at K-Mart, and now today, here I am, 13 years later, wondering - BAFFLED - why the inconsistencies are so CONSISTENT.

I am wondering also if this part means I was adopted from unknown parents or that I was raised by my father, who didn’t live with my mother. Murray seeks $1 billion for VA

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.
Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.
The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."

REAGAN WAS FORGETTING 25 YEARS AGO, AS WELL

WHEN PRESIDENT Reagan says that he has forgotten important details about the Iran-contra affair, there is ample precedent for his inability to recall key events. On Feb. 5, 1962 -- the day before his 51st birthday -- he appeared as a witness before a federal grand jury in Los Angeles.
"I don't want to appear as though I am trying deliberately to be vague," Reagan said, responding to questions about some of the most important events of his term as president of the Screen Actors Guild. "But, as I say, I would like you to realize in my history of holding an office with the guild, my memory is like a kaleidoscope of meetings, that I am sure if I sat down with someone and started in, I could then recall the details . . . ."
The grand jury was investigating possible criminal misconduct as a part of an anti-trust probe and never charged Reagan with any crimes. But the testimony gives a fascinating look at Ronald Reagan under an investigator's sharp questioning.
Reagan had been the president of the guild in 1952, when it was against contractual agreements with the guild for talent agencies to produce television shows. According to guild documents, he supported an exclusive waiver for MCA, the talent agency which represented him. The waiver was granted in 1952 and renewed in 1954.
Guild by-laws prohibited agencies from employing their own clients in such productions. After that restriction was waived by a unanimous vote of the SAG board, Reagan benefited financially and professionally. MCA arranged appearances in Las Vegas and a job as host of "The General Electric Theater," MCA's flagship program. This relationship led to investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department's antitrust division. Reagan's personal agent, who had negotiated a seven-year, million-dollar contract with Warner Brothers for actor Reagan in 1942, was Lew Wasserman, who in 1962 was president of MCA. Today Wasserman is chairman of MCA's board.
Federal antitrust division attorney John Fricano questioned Reagan about the relationship between MCA and the Screen Actors Guild. Indirectly addressing the subject, Fricano asked, "Which company, whether a member of the Alliance (of Television Film Producers) or not, was the first to capitulate with respect to repayment for reruns?"
Reagan replied, "There you have me. I wouldn't know where we cracked that and if you tell me I'll have to take your word for it."
"Well, you were president of Screen Actors Guild in 1952, were you not?"
"Yes."
"This was a very important matter," Fricano continued, "which Screen Actors Guild was taking up and it was the most important point of the guild?"
Fricano unsuccessfully attempted to jog Reagan's memory and then broached the subject of the MCA waiver. Reagan asked when the action was taken. Fricano replied, "July 1952."
Reagan said, "Well, maybe the fact that I married in March of 1952 and went on a honeymoon had something to do with my being a little bit hazy."
"I'm glad you raised that point. If we might digress, who is your wife?"
"Nancy Davis."
"Was she a member of the board of directors of SAG in 1952?"
"Yes."
"Do you recall any other unusual or momentous events in 1952 with respect to SAG's relations with one or more TV film production companies?"
"Well, now what kind of events?"
"In 1952 when you were president of the Screen Actors Guild, did not the Screen Actors Guild grant to MCA what is known in the trade as a blanket or unlimited waiver to produce TV films?"
"Oh, we have granted -- I didn't know when it exactly started, we granted an extended waiver to MCA to be engaged in production as we had done with other people . . . ."
When pressed by Fricano, Reagan could not cite any other company that had ever received such a blanket waiver from SAG.
Fricano then asked, "Can you tell this grand jury why Screen Actors Guild gave to MCA a blanket or unlimited waiver?"
"Well," Reagan explained, "my own reasoning and one of the reasons perhaps why this doesn't loom so importantly to me is I personally never saw any particular harm in it. I was one who subscribed to the belief, and those were times of great distress in the picture business, I was for anyone that could give employment. I saw no harm in this happening . . . ."
"Do you recall whether or not you participated in the negotiations held by MCA and SAG with respect to the blanket waiver in July of 1952?"
"No, I think I have already told you I don't recall that. I don't recall. There were times when I wasn't involved on a committee. Whether that is one of them or not I wouldn't recall. I must tell you that I always told {the executive secretary} in the guild that I realized I felt a little self-conscious sometimes about that, lest there might ever be a misunderstanding because of the fact that I had been so long with MCA, and sometimes I kind of ran for cover and was very happy to duck a committee duty in these matters."
"Did you participate in any negotiations in 1954 on SAG's behalf with respect to a waiver to MCA . . . ?"
"I don't honesty recall. You know something? You keep saying {1954} in the summer. Six months later, on July 13, 1962, MCA was charged with violations of federal antitrust laws. Also charged as a co-conspirator was the Screen Actors Guild. Reagan was not charged. Two months later, the charges against MCA and the guild and the pending investigations were dismissed as part of an out-of-court settlement between the federal government and MCA. As a proviso of the final settlement, the record of the case was sealed.

Obscure Endowment Thrust Into Limelight by Oliver North’s Notes

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The National Endowment for Democracy, created by Congress in 1983 to promote democratic institutions overseas, has labored in obscurity to distribute nearly $60 million in grant money - until now.
Along came the Iran-Contra affair, and something Oliver L. North called Project Democracy - PRODEM in his computer messages. North’s program was a massive, secret operation to aid the Nicaraguan Contras.
Because of North’s choice in a name, the federally financed but privately run endowment is obscure no more.
The New York Times wrote a front-page story that described North’s operation as the endowment’s secret arm. Further stories appeared when an organization administering four endowment grants was linked to the Iran-Contra controversy. When the endowment board met last Friday, a network television crew was there.
A North memo described his democracy program as $4.5 million in assets to help the Nicaraguan Contras: six aircraft, warehouses, supplies, maintenance facilities, ships, boats, leased houses, vehicles ordnance, munitions, communications equipment and a 6,520-foot runway in Costa Rica.
Ever since North’s designation became known, top endowment officials have been spending their time trying to convince people there is no link between North’s operation and the public endowment.
We’re getting entangled with a problem that isn’t our problem, endowment board chairman John Richardson said.
Endowment officials say their difficulty began with a Feb. 15 New York Times story. It said:
Although the public arm of Project Democracy, now known as the National Endowment for Democracy, openly gave federal money to democratic institutions abroad and received wide bipartisan support, officials said the project’s secret arm took an entirely different direction after Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, then an obscure National Security Council aide, was appointed to head it about three years ago.
Endowment officials fought back. Two members of its board, former Vice President Walter Mondale and Republican National Chairman Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., wrote an article in the Times that denied any connection with North - the central figure in the Iran-Contra affair.
Then, came another setback.
The Tower board that reported on the Iran-Contra case reproduced a chart found in North’s safe that contained initials of organizations believed to be involved in aiding the Contras.
One turned out to be a group administering four grants for the endowment, which uses U.S. organizations as middlemen to encourage contact between Americans and grant recipients.
Last Friday, the board voted unanimously to remove the grantee - the Institute for North South Issues in Washington - from its program, while admitting there was no evidence of wrongdoing. The endowment said it was awaiting completion of a financial review of the $444,000 in grants the institute received to administer four projects in the Caribbean.
Carl Gershman, president of the endowment, told the board he has met with the Times editorial board to try to clear up the confusion.
In an editorial Friday titled, The Good Project Democracy, the Times said, The lamentable result of the North confusions is to re-ignite suspicions of sinister American manipulation. The editorial went on, to ask, What’s in a name? Credibility, and this is one form of it well worth restoring.
Asked if there’s any link between the two projects, Gershman said, None whatsoever. North usurped a name. There’s not even an informal relationsip. It’s absurd, he said.
In fact, Gershman said in a recent interview, a covert operation would be contrary to what his organization is trying to promote.
If we are going to be working with democracy in the world, it should be done openly, he said.
The endowment grew out of a 1982 speech by President Reagan, which called for a study on an initiative of private organizations to promote democracy overseas.
In February 1983, in a program called Project Democracy, the administration proposed such programs be funneled through federal agencies. Congress, seeking a program that was independent and bipartisan, refused to approve the plan.
Instead, Congress that year backed what became the endowment.
Since commencing operations in April 1984, the endowment has issued about 300 grants, spending nearly $60 million, Gershman said.
In the Philippines, the endowment supported Filipino trade unions, which had been the target of violent attacks.
In Haiti, support also was given to an emerging free trade union movement, and for establishment of a center to promote research, education and democratic cooperation.
It has supported the Cultural Council of the Afghan Resistence, which has launched a massive education program inside that nation.
Support has been given in Chile to a broad group of political and social forces working for a return to democracy.
Lawyers, journalists, church leaders and community groups working for human rights in South Africa received support. So did a labor federation in Nicaragua and the newspaper La Prensa.
Other projects were backed in Poland, Grenada, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Czechoslovakia and China, among other countries.

I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good, or yellow maybe. That would be sweet!

Pragmatism and symbolic interaction
Much of Mead's work focused on the development of the self and the objectivity of the world within the social realm: he insisted that "the individual mind can exist only in relation to other minds with shared meanings".
The two most important roots of Mead's work, and of symbolic interactionism in general, are the philosophy of pragmatism and social (as opposed to psychological) behaviorism (i.e.: Mead was concerned with the stimuli of gestures and social objects with rich meanings rather than bare physical objects which psychological behaviourists considered stimuli). Pragmatism is a wide-ranging philosophical position from which several aspects of Mead's influences can be identified.
There are four main tenets of pragmatism (see Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy): First, to pragmatists true reality does not exist "out there" in the real world, it "is actively created as we act in and toward the world." Second, people remember and base their knowledge of the world on what has been useful to them and are likely to alter what no longer "works." Third, people define the social and physical "objects" they encounter in the world according to their use for them. Lastly, if we want to understand actors, we must base that understanding on what people actually do. Three of these ideas are critical to symbolic interactionism:
the focus on the interaction between the actor and the world
a view of both the actor and the world as dynamic processes and not static structures and
the actor's ability to interpret the social world.
Thus, to Mead and symbolic interactionists, consciousness is not separated from action and interaction, but is an integral part of both. Symbolic interactionism as a pragmatic philosophy was an antecedent to the philosophy of transactionalism.
Mead's theories in part, based on pragmatism and behaviorism, were transmitted to many graduate students at the University of Chicago who then went on to establish symbolic interactionism.

I always suspected something like this was the case. The new issue of Texas Monthly delves into the long neglected story of George W. Bush less than stellar military career in the Texas Air National Guard. The Texas Monthly lays out the surprisingly complicated mechanizations that led to the Junior Bush landing this plumb spot in the T.A.N.G.
That George W. got special treatment at a time when draftees were likely to end up slogging through the jungles of Viet Nam shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to anyone who knows how America routinely gives special treatment to the offspring of the 1%.

Again the Vampire call came in, and again Toland cringed. Twenty incoming missiles were plotted. The formation activated jammers and SAM systems, with a pair of Aegis cruisers on the threat axis. In seconds they were launching missiles, and the other SM2-equipped SAM ships added their own missiles to the "basket," allowing their birds to be guided by the Aegis computer systems. This reminds me of a series of thoughts and almost-visualizations I was having in my mind a while that still does not seem to be random flights of imagination. In those series of thoughts and imaginations, I was thinking of how my wife Phoebe was showing off to my grandmother a collection of art I had created for her over the years such as medallions and so on. In one case though I had given her the medal of a Navy Cross I had received during the Vietnam War and I created an elaborate cover story for explaining where I got that item and I never did tell her that the item was a Navy Cross medal and I am not certain if she ever figured that out. So anyway, the story was elaborate and I told her among the details that I was overseas sometime around the timeframe of 1970 or earlier or later and I got that item from a shoebox a woman gave that included some items such as a wristwatch and other items and that woman was named Charlie. My grandmother pondered that detail and never did elaborate on what that meant to her but they did talk a lot afterwards and I guess my grandmother was interested in all the other stories associated with the art I had created for my wife.

And I often worried about how I don't have the first clue about raising kids. Or maybe I do. I don't know. I know they should be good role models. But what do I know about role models? The role models from my early youth were Superman and Batman. Superman I liked and wanted to be because I knew no one could hurt us if I had the strength of Superman. Batman I liked because he was smart. I liked both of them because they were loners for the most part, especially Batman. Superman had Lois Lane, but it was more of a fantasy than a real relationship. Batman was just angry at the world and he didn't want to depend on anyone, although he felt obligated to help the people he could help.
So anyway, if I was a super-hero, I would probably feel comfortable raising kids myself, but that is just a lot of responsibility for a mortal.

People planning to erect an artistic play fountain in Riverfront Park are holding a benefit car wash today to promote the $1.25 million project.
Volunteers will be putting the shine on vehicles at the park drop-off zone at Howard Street and Spokane Falls Boulevard from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is a cash donation of the driver’s choice.
In addition, anyone who stops by the car wash can sign up to win an engraved salmon plaque to be included as part of the fountain. The 9-inch stainless steel plaques are going to contributors who give $500 to the project, but fountain promoters have decided to hold a drawing for a free plaque in conjunction with the car wash.
The fountain is a joint undertaking of Spokane Rotary 21 Club and the city parks department. The car wash is being held at the same location where the fountain would be erected, just west of the Carrousel.
Debbie Lockhert, public relations chairwoman for the Rotary group, said fund-raising recently surpassed the $1 million mark. It includes $425,000 in park funds from a 1999 voter-approved bond issue, plus major gifts from private sources. Rotary sponsors are now seeking smaller contributions from the general public.
She said the club is putting on the car wash “to raise funds and also raise awareness of the fountain.”
Ground breaking is expected in October, and completion next spring, she said.
Club organizers had hoped to have the project completed by this year, but a slowdown in the region’s economy caused the fund-raising to take longer than anticipated, Lockhert said.
The Rotary Riverfront Park Fountain would be both a sculpture and recreational attraction. It would follow a recommendation for installing an entrance fountain that dates back to the establishment of Riverfront Park in 1975. The park occupies former railroad land initially reclaimed for Expo ‘74.
The flat-deck fountain would include jets, sprays, misters and other features that would use water that is recaptured by an underground vault and filtered like a swimming pool. Some 155 jets would be capable of throwing 3,500 gallons of water a minute.
Harold Balazs has been commissioned for the sculpture. The work would tell the story of the Spokane Falls and its relationship to native people. Fiber optics would be used to illuminate the jets at night. The fountain could be operated in winter to create ice formations. Computers would time jets to colored lights and music for fountain shows at different times.
The free “spray ground” will be open to all ages and abilities and accessible by wheelchairs.

Boomer: This guy's probably died and been reborn a dozen times. You may have faced him before.
Starbuck: So what, raiders reincarnate? Just like you?
Boomer: Yeah, just like me.
Starbuck: Great. What a frakkin' world.
Boomer: A raider's much like a trained animal, with the basic consciousness and survival instinct. But with the destruction of the resurrection ship, when they die, they're really dead. So, they're not gonna mount mass attacks where they could have major casualties.
Starbuck: Raiders reincarnate?
Boomer: Makes sense, doesn't it? It takes months for you to train a nugget into an effective viper pilot. And then they get killed. And their experience, their knowledge, their skill sets. They're all lost forever. So, if you could bring 'em back and put 'em in a brand new body, wouldn't you do it? 'Cause death then becomes a learning experience. How, uh-- how many pilots have we lost? I mean, have you lost?
Starbuck: You know, there are times when I look at you and I forget what you are. All I see is that kid that pooched her landings day after day. The kid that was frakkin' the chief and thinking she was getting away with it.
Boomer: Yeah, I remember. [Crying] You were like a big sister to--
Boomer reaches out to touch Starbuck on the leg. The marines promptly cock and raise their rifles to stop her.
Boomer: Kara, um-- be careful of Scar, okay? He's filled with rage.
Starbuck: About what?
Boomer: Dying's a painful and traumatic experience. Every time he's reborn, he's filled with more bitter memories. Scar hates you every bit as much as you hate him.
