Chapter 1 - Louis Wu

He walked the brightly lighted slidewalks, adding his own pace to their ten-miles-per-hour speed. It occurred to him then that every city in the world had slidewalks, and that they all moved at ten miles per hour.

The thought was intolerable. Not new; just intolerable. Louis Wu saw how thoroughly Munich resembled Cairo and Resht ... and San Francisco and Topeka and London and Amsterdam. The stores along the slidewalks sold the same products in all the cities of the world. These citizens who passed him tonight looked all alike, dressed all allke. Not Americans or Germans or Egyptlans, but mere flatlanders.

In three-and-a-half centuries the transfer booths had done this to the infinite variety of Earth. They covered the world in a net of instantaneous travel. The difference between Moskva and Sidney was a moment of time and a tenth-star coin. Inevitably the cities had blended over the centuries, until placenames were only relics of the past. San Francisco and San Diego were the northern and southern ends of one sprawling coastal city. But how many people knew which end was which? Tanj few, these days.

Pessimistic thinking, for a man's two hundredth birthday.

But the blending of the cities was real. Louis had watched it happen. All the irrationalities of place and time and custom, blending into one big rationality of City, worldwide, like a dull gray paste. Did anyone today speak Deutsche, English, Francais, Espanol? Everyone spoke Interworld. Style in body paints changed all at once, all over the world, in one monstrous surge.

Time for another sabbatical? Into the unknown, alone in a singleship, with his skin and eyes and hair their own color, a beard growing randomly over his face ...

"Nuts," said Louis to himself. "I just got back from a sabbatical." Twenty years ago.

Chapter 1 - Louis Wu

"I just got back from a sabbatical." Twenty years ago.

But it was wearing on toward midnight. Louis Wu found a transfer booth, inserted his credit card in the slot and dialed for Sevilla.

He emerged in a sunlit room.

"What the tanj?" he wondered, blinking. The transfer booth must have blown its zap. In Sevilla there should have been no sunlight. Louis Wu turned to dial again, then turned back and stared.

He was in a thoroughly anonymous hotel room: a setting prosaic enough to make its occupant doubly shocking.

Facing him from the middle of the room was something neither human nor humanoid. It stood on three legs, and it regarded Louis Wu from two directions, from two flat heads mounted on flexible, slender necks. Over most of its startling frame, the skin was white and glovesoft; but a thick, coarse brown mane ran from between the beasts necks, back along its spine, to cover the complex-looking hip joint of the hind leg. The two forelegs were set wide apart, so that the beast's small, clawed hooves formed almost an equilateral triangle.

Louis guessed that the thing was an alien animal. In those flat heads there would be no room for brains. But he noticed the hump that rose between the bases of the necks, where the mane became a thick protective mop ... and a memory floated up from eighteen decades behind him.

This was a puppeteer, a Pierson's puppeteer. Its brain and skull were under the hump. It was not an animal; it was at least as intelligent as a man. And its eyes, one to a head in deep bone sockets, stared fixedly at Louis Wu from two directions.

O'NEILL
Yeah, don't get me wrong, flattery goes a long way with me. But, if you're going where I think you're going with this…

THOR
When it became clear to the Asgard High Council that the war with the Replicators could not be won, a plan was devised, a trap was set. One made possible by you.

CARTER
By us?

THOR
The android Reese that you discovered and provided to us for study retained a single core command in her base programming which we believed all Replicators would still follow.

CARTER
Then, you were able to reactivate her?

THOR
No. The android was damaged beyond repair. However, the key command was activated within her neural network, amplified, and broadcast through subspace throughout the known universe.

CARTER
What was the command?

THOR
To come forth.

JONAS
You instructed every Replicator out there to come to you?

O'NEILL
I have a theory why you lost the war.

THOR
The command was only given once the trap was set.

JONAS
What was the trap?

THOR
A time dilation device generating a field radius of point one six light years.

CARTER
Wow, that's some trap.

[O'Neill looks at her.]

Prior to Walt's death, the company had purchased land in Florida to fulfill Walt's next major project the development of 28,000 acres that would dwarf the 400 acres of Disneyland. Roy was determined to realize his brother's vision, and honored him by naming it Walt Disney World. It opened October 1, 1971 with a Disneyland-style theme park

O'NEILL
So, Jonas, first time going up against a Replicator, eh?

JONAS
Um-hmm.

[O'Neill tries to eat some of Teal’c’s ice cream. Teal'c pulls his carton out of reach, giving O'Neill a different one instead.]

JONAS
I think I have a pretty good idea of what to expect, though. Teal’c told me all about them and I have everything Dr. Jackson wrote. They’re fascinating.

O'NEILL
Fascinating?

JONAS
Yeah. Well, think about it. We have a human scientist who creates this android girl, who then goes on to create these Replicators as a toy. Well, at least the concept of something that starts out so innocent becomes so evil, that’s got to be fascinating to you.

TEAL'C
Replicators exist merely to increase their numbers and do so without prejudice. They are no more evil that a virus.

O'NEILL
A really evil virus.

JONAS
Well, yes, we can all agree that any living thing that isn’t inherently evil in and of itself is capable of undertaking actions that are evil.

[Teal’c swaps his ice cream for O'Neill’s.]

TEAL'C
We are slowing.

CARTER
(over the radio)
Colonel, you should come forward, sir.

O'NEILL
We’re on our way.

INT—X-303 BRIDGE

[O'Neill, Teal’c, and Jonas enter.]

CARTER
We just came out of hyperspace a minute ago.

THOR
We dare proceed no further without risk of engaging the Replicators. You will have to continue from this point under your own ship's power.

O'NEILL
But you’re gonna wait here for us, right?

THOR
There is now another concern. Our long-range sensors have discovered that the time dilation device was indeed activated.

O'NEILL
Well, that’s good.
(pause)
It’s not good?

THOR
Time is now progressing faster within the field.

CARTER
They reversed it?

THOR
By a factor of ten squared.

O'NEILL
What is with you people? Time machines are nothing but trouble, even we know that.

TEAL'C
Clearly, the Replicators have discovered a means of utilizing the time dilation machine to serve their own purpose.

JONAS
Well, what would that purpose be?

O'NEILL
Get a message to Thor. Let him know we touched down. Let’s move out.

EXT—SHOT OF THE PLANET SURFACE

[SG-1 leaves the ship and heads for the structure, which looks like a giant "X".]

JONAS
This can’t be the only structure on the entire planet.

O'NEILL
I’d be willing to bet the bugs ate everything else.

JONAS
Then where are they?

[Carter stops to sweep away some dirt on the ground.]

CARTER
Sir? You’re not gonna like this.

JONAS
What is it?

TEAL'C
This planet's surface appears to be covered by Replicator blocks.

CARTER
Probably more than one layer, and who knows how thick it is. Maybe miles.

JONAS
Why would that be?

CARTER
Well, it could be a by-product of the reverse time dilation. In relative time, they’ve been here hundreds of years, but there’s nothing left here to consume so they’re just conserving energy.

INT—THE STRUCTURE

[Inside is dimly-lit. SG-1 shine their flashlights as they go down some steps and into a large room. Carter goes to the time dilation device.]

CARTER
Sir, the original interface is still intact. I might be able to…

[They hear footsteps, and a young man appears.]

FIFTH
Who are you?

O'NEILL
Colonel Jack O’Neill, US Air Force, Earth. Who are you?

FIFTH
The others are coming.

[Four others appear, two men and two women. One man steps forward, and O'Neill raises his weapon.]

FIRST
What do you think you're doing?

O'NEILL
Clocks are running a little fast around here. Thought we’d stop by, wind ‘em. We’ll be on our way.

FIRST
Your companion is attempting to alter the settings on the time device, and we cannot allow that. If she does not stop immediately, we will be forced to take action.

O'NEILL
Well, now, if you do that, we might be forced to take our own action.

FIRST
Tell your companion to stop.

O'NEILL
Carter, how much time you need there?

CARTER
A lot, sir. Maybe a few hours.

O'NEILL
Hours?

CARTER
Sir, the interface was completely rebuilt. I’m not even sure where to start.

O'NEILL
Couldn’t you crank it up a little bit? Move things along?

CARTER
It doesn’t work that way, sir.

FIRST
(laughs)
Ironic, isn’t it?

O'NEILL
Who are you people? Because, if you haven’t noticed, this entire planet is paved with Replicators.

FIRST
We are aware of this.

O'NEILL
Then you should also know that these things have taken millions of lives, and they’ll keep on doing that unless we stop them.

SECOND
He doesn’t understand.

O'NEILL
You know, he’s standing right here.

FIRST
We cannot allow you to stop them, I’m afraid.

O'NEILL
Why not?

FIRST
We are Replicators.

O'NEILL
Ah.

I wonder if the part where "Marge" says she had to give up her dream of being a stethoscope salesman is some kind of reference to the Welch-Allyn company. I am not certain if they sell stethoscopes but I was noticing when I was in the VA that there is some medical equipment they manufacture that monitors body functions.

She said before that she had wanted to be a doctor and I cannot now remember what was the other aspiration she listed after doctor but I began to wonder if that has something to do with my wife, who is also a medical doctor.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 06/22/08 7:00 PM
In that dream or whatever it was I was writing about where Phoebe in my office and I kept the person waiting who was outside my office, I have been thinking again that it was Jack Nicholson. I had asked him to meet me at my office for him to consider a role I was offering him and that could have been for the "A Few Good Men" role although I also think he and I had worked together on several earlier films.

I had him scheduled to meet with me after I had scheduled a meeting with Phoebe, under the guise of me being her agent, and that led me into the conversation of explaining, to his surprise, that she and I have been married since 1979. I had invited Tom Cruise to join the meeting with Nicholson and he was in the office just after he came in.

I explained to Nicholson that Phoebe's career, and therefore Nicholson's perceptions about her career, was mostly my creation. I further elaborated that the reason for her character as a high school student was because she was 16 when we married and I further explained that I was the fictional character "Doug" who is never seen in the film. I went on to describe the Douglas Aircraft Company as the manufacturer of the A-4 Skyhawk and that around the time Phoebe and I married in 1979, I was at the U.S. Naval Academy and I was flying the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. I also told him that I was not only a lawyer, but I was also the abnormal psychology professor that "Linda Barrett" goes to live with after she graduated "Ridgemont High." I did not explain "Riverside" but I did at some point in the conversation, after he was thoroughly incedulous, reveal that I am also an astronaut. I explained that I had graduated Princeton at 10 years old and then went on the graduate Oxford a few years later. I told him about my Olympic gold medals in 1964 and also a few other details I do not describe here, such as the reasons relevant to me personally that Nixon got kicked out of the White House. I explained that was part of the reason I was living a secret life.

FIRST
My creation took place in the last moment before the Asgard time device was to activate. There was a miniscule crack in the neutronium shell. I could penetrate this where my Replicator brethren could not. I managed to stop the machine before it activated and eventually used it to suit our purpose.

JONAS
Which is?

FIRST
To increase our number. That has never changed. And now, thanks to the Asgard, we have all the time in the world. In a few short years, we will go forth as an army.

O'NEILL
Yeah, see, we can’t you do that.

SECOND
You cannot stop us.

FIRST
Was it not in the same way that you became the dominant species of your world? Is it not a process of natural selection? The strong survive.

JONAS
Yeah, but there’s nothing truly natural about you. I mean, you’ve seen into our minds, I’m quite certain that you can all tell the difference.

FIRST
Of course. We are far superior. And if you could see into the mind of an animal you would blindly feed upon, you would reach the same conclusion.
