Hey, McCaffrey! Station assignments!

Something wrong with my eyesight?

You really trying this fireman thing again?

Quitting once wasn't good enough?

It's in the blood.

Is that right?

Willie, you owe me a brew!

Hold on! I'm talking to the fire chief!

Let's look and see what else was in your blood.

I always looked forward to getting these.

You hold onto those, huh?

It didn't offer the growth and challenge that I needed.

Uh-huh.

The American Presidency Project

GEORGE BUSH

41st President of the United States: 1989 - 1993

Remarks to the Crewmembers of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Winners of the Orbiter-Naming Competition

May 16, 1989

I'd say please be seated, but I don't -- well, you all, please be seated. And to our Senators and Congressmen here, a special warm welcome. And Admiral Truly, I'm very delighted to see you, sir. And of course, to Captain David Walker and Ron and Mary and Mark and Norm, let me say this: that Commander Walker and crew, friends and families of the shuttle Atlantis, distinguished members, we are just pleased that you all are here and sorry that the weather did not cooperate.

You know, the late Jackie Gleason immortalized the words, "And away we go." Well, it's a pleasure to be here with Americans who, by exploring the horizons of outer space, have made those words reality. And so, we gather here today to celebrate the continuity of our space program and really of our country itself, of America herself. In a sense, today's setting reflects the continuity. You are pioneers pushing back the boundaries of our technological future. And this house embodies the greatness of America's present and past.

And the two space programs that we celebrate -- they, too, reflect America's continuity. For in Atlantis' deployment of Magellan, we salute achievement which has come to pass; and in Endeavor, the glory which still lies ahead. Some of you may recall that Winston Churchill said, "The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see."

Well, Magellan was named after the seafaring explorer of the 16th century. And as the first U.S. planetary mission since 1978, it marks the rebirth of America's planetary program. From Magellan, we're going to learn more about Venus and, thus, ourselves. For Venus, I am told, is the planet most like Earth.

To Commander Walker and his outstanding Atlantis crew, and to the entire NASA organization, my heartfelt congratulations. Every time I talk to one of these astronauts, they always point out the support they get from a magnificent team that for a fleeting moment they leave behind on Earth. So, my salute goes to everybody involved in this important work. We salute the courage and enterprise of this crew especially, but also all who are on this team. You've reaffirmed your nation's genius in science and technology; and yet, I think we would all agree, it really is only just a beginning: 4 more solar system missions through the mid-1990's, 13 more shuttle flights in 1989 and '90. These flights will chart new frontiers in science and exploration. And we'll explore those frontiers through the leaders of tomorrow.

And so, we see some of those leaders in the students we have here today from Mississippi and from Georgia. For in a nationwide orbiter-naming competition, involving over 71,000 students and 6,100 entries from elementary and secondary schools, you showed how the possibilities of tomorrow point us onward and upward.

My friends, you know, choosing a name can be a thankless task. Consider the new father who was once reproached by Sam Goldwyn. "You're going to call your son William?" he said. "What kind of a name is that? Every Tom, Dick, and Harry is called William." [Laughter]

Well, somehow you all fared much better than that. Both of your schools chose the name Endeavor, which Webster's defines as "to make an effort, strive; to try to reach or achieve." And each of your schools has lived that definition. In the division 1 category, kindergarten through grade 6, the national winner is a team of 9 fifth-graders from Senatobia Middle School, in Senatobia, Mississippi. And through your team, younger elementary students learned about space up close and personal, like simulating a space camp's wireless communications or trying on a team-made spacesuit. And then in division 2, grades 7 through 12, the winning team came from a nearby State: Tallulah Falls Schools, Inc., in Tallulah Falls, Georgia. Here students developed a math magazine, "Math Exploration With James Cook," and then created a play comparing Cook's 18th-century sea exploration to Endeavor's 20th-century space exploration.

The orbiter-naming contest was, and is, a partnership between NASA and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The CCSSO played a key role in organizing this tremendous contest. And I'd like to thank its members and also my good friend, Congressman Tom Lewis, whose legislation created the event. But most of all, I want to thank you, Commander Walker; the crew; and the students. For you've acted not for us alone but for generations to come. And in so doing, you're making possible, now and tomorrow, that picture of the orbiter lifting off, its rise a swirl of magic, and of Americans cheering its safety and success and dreaming of the new worlds and faraway heavens which form America's destiny. And that is the continuity of America and of our space shuttle program, which points us toward the stars.

And so, thank you; my heartfelt congratulations. God [ Kerry's note: a hypocrite, his childish blatherings of a superstitious fool ] bless you all, and God bless the United States of America. Thank you very, very much.

Note: The President spoke at 1:17 p.m. in Room 450 of the Old Executive Office Building.

The Twilight War: The Secret History of America's Thirty-Year Conflict with Iran

David Crist

Penguin, Jul 19, 2012 - History - 656 pages

Tensions mounted both on board the Wainwright and up the chain of command. The Wainwright's weapons officer, Marty Drake, could not understand why they did not fire. "Sir," he cautioned, "he's got the last remaining Harpoon." But Chandler still had it in his mind that he needed to warn her away, and he maintained this even when the Joshan locked on with its fire control radar. Listening in over the net back on the Coronado and in Tampa, Less and Crist grew increasingly concerned. Less liked the idea of giving the Iranians a warning in hopes of sparing lives, but after repeated warnings he wondered why Chandler had not opened fire. General Crist turned to a senior staff officer sitting next to him and asked apprehensively, "Why doesn't he just blow him out of the water?"

Finally, with only thirteen miles separating the two forces - close enough for the Joshan's captain to see the Wainwright's mast peeking just above the horizon - Chandler issued his fourth and final warning to the Joshan - "Stop and abandon ship. I intend to sink you."

With this Mallek decided to act. If the Americans were going to attack him, he would not take the first hit.

Chicago Tribune

Navy Rises To Occasion In Duel At Sea

April 19, 1988 By David Evans, Chicago Tribune.

WASHINGTON — For the first time in more than 40 years, enemy warships have seriously challenged the U.S. Navy at sea. The Navy won-decisively.

When the sun set on the Persian Gulf Monday night, at least two Iranian patrol boats were at the bottom, two others were heavily damaged, perhaps even sunk, and two Iranian frigates were disabled.

In one day`s combat, Iranian fleet strength was reduced considerably. The U.S. ships involved in the fighting were unscathed.

By all accounts, the Navy racked up a victory, marred only by the probable loss of an Army attack helicopter. The Cobra helicopter, operating with a two-member crew from the cruiser Wainwright, was reported overdue.

The engagement underscores the decisive impact of air power in naval engagements and the effectiveness of simple countermeasures in dealing with antiship missile attacks.

But the incident that prompted Monday`s naval battle-the near sinking last week of the USS Samuel B. Roberts by an Iranian mine-raises anew the question of the Navy`s ability to deal effectively with even simple mines.

The Navy`s success in surface combat stems in large measure from the presence of aircraft overhead. E-2C Hawkeye radar planes from the carrier Enterprise provided early warning of Iranian F-4 Phantom jets as well as inbound surface vessels.

Attack aircraft known as A-6 also provided early warning of impending attacks. And it was the bombs and missiles fired from the A-6s that inflicted most of the damage. Only two of the Iranian vessels damaged or sunk were hit by ordnance fired from surface warships.

At the same time, the Iranian air force-with barely two dozen or so planes still operational, for want of American spare parts-was able to mount only a token sortie of two F-4s, which were chased off and possibly damaged by U.S. antiaircraft missiles.

Control of the sea would seem to require dominance of the air.

Indeed, the British Royal Navy`s losses in the Falkland Islands war might have been far worse if the Argentine A-4s had not been forced to fly to the very limit of their range, with only enough fuel for one pass, and if more of their bombs had exploded on impact.

However, the Persian Gulf action shows that some of the Navy`s surface ship countermeasures do work. The captain of the frigate USS Stark was roundly criticized for not employing chaff as a radar decoy before his ship was hit by a radar-homing Exocet missile last May.

On Monday, the cruiser Wainwright used its chaff to decoy a Harpoon missile fired from the attacking Joshan, an Iranian fast attack craft.

The Joshan, which did not employ any effective chaff, was then hit and sunk

The Surface View: Operation Praying Mantis

By Captain J. B. Perkins III, U. S. Navy

May 1989 Proceedings Vol. 115/5/1,035

With the primary mission accomplished, SAG Charlie patrolled the area. About three hours later, they detected the approach of an Iranian Kaman patrol boat, which the Bagley's LAMPS-I identified as the Joshan. As the patrol boat closed, the SAG commander repeatedly warned the Iranian that he was standing into danger and advised him to alter course and depart the area. When his direction was ignored, the U. S. commander requested and was granted "weapons free" by CJTFME. He then advised the Joshan:

"Stop your engines and abandon ship; I intend to sink you."

After thinking this communication over, the Joshan's CO apparently decided to go out firing and launched his only remaining Harpoon. The three SAG Charlie ships, now in a line abreast at 26,000 yards, and the Bagley's LAMPS simultaneously detected the launch and maneuvered and launched chaff. The Harpoon passed down the Wainwright's starboard side close aboard (the seeker may not have activated)

It would take Rinn and his crew hours to add up all the clues, but the news they gathered early on wasn't good. The main engineroom and another capacious engineering space were inundated with oil-slicked water, and a third compartment was filling rapidly. Lose that one, and the frigate would likely plunge to the bottom of the Gulf.

The Samuel B. Roberts was flooding, on fire, surrounded by sharks and sea snakes, alone in a minefield in a sea at war.

Shuttle Poised for Satellite Rescue Today : Space: Endeavour should overtake orbiting target by mid-afternoon. Crew will then attempt to lasso and relaunch device.

May 10, 1992 ROBERT W. STEWART TIMES STAFF WRITER

HOUSTON — The nation's newest space shuttle, Endeavour, on Saturday streaked toward an unprecedented attempt to rescue a stranded communications satellite today by attaching it to a new rocket motor designed to propel it into a higher orbit.

As Endeavour entered its third day in space, the seven-member crew made detailed preparations to retrieve the $150-million satellite, which was left in a useless low-Earth orbit in March, 1990, when the commercial Titan rocket that launched it malfunctioned.

Engineers for the communications consortium that owns the satellite, International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, have been directing the device toward its rendezvous position by activating thrusters on the satellite that dropped it from a 350-mile-high orbit to an orbit 225 miles above the Earth.

By Saturday evening, the shuttle was trailing the Intelsat 6 satellite by 975 miles, and was closing at a rate of 86 miles each orbit.

"It's (been) a nice quiet day, building up to the extremely ambitious day we have (Sunday)," Al Pennington, flight director for the National Aeronautics and Space Administation, said during a briefing at the Johnson Space Center. The spacecraft lifted off Thursday evening from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

If all goes as planned, the rescue will begin at 1:30 p.m. PDT today as Endeavour enters its 48th orbit and astronaut Pierre J. Thuot, 36, a U.S. Navy commander, enters the shuttle's cargo bay.

Thuot will begin by tethering his feet to the shuttle's movable arm. Inside the orbiter, astronaut Bruce E. Melnick, 42, a Coast Guard commander, will guide the arm to lift Thuot within reach of the 12-foot wide Intelsat 6, which will be rotating at a rate of once every two minutes.

Thuot is to grab the 8,960-pound, 17-foot-tall satellite from the bottom with a specially designed "capture bar," and then manually halt its rotation. He will then hook the bar to the shuttle arm and Melnick will guide Thuot and the satellite into the shuttle bay.

There, Thuot will work with astronaut Richard J. Hieb, 36, to hitch the satellite to the frame that houses a new 23,000-pound, solid-fuel rocket motor. After the two crew members attach electric umbilical cords linking the motor to the satellite, they will set four, pre-loaded springs that, minutes later, will push the satellite and reboost the rocket back into space.

Once the spacewalkers are safely inside, the crew will release the springs to send the satellite assembly spinning away from the shuttle at a speed of about a half-foot per second.

Intelsat controllers in Washington, D.C., are scheduled to fire the rocket motor Monday, initially propelling the satellite into an elliptical orbit reaching as far as 51,750 miles from the Earth. Eventually, the satellite is to settle into the lower orbit over the Atlantic Ocean, where it can relay telephone and television signals, including video of the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Intelsat is paying $93 million for the rescue mission. The cost of a shuttle mission has been pegged at between $250 million and $500 million, depending on the overhead, salary and development costs included in the calculation.

During two other scheduled spacewalks, on Monday and Tuesday, astronauts will practice techniques to be used on future missions to repair the flawed Hubble space telescope and to assemble the planned space station Freedom.

So then I started thinking: how fast is the shuttle moving when it lands?

Then I looked it up. According to this information on the atmospheric free flight, it landed at 213 mph. How the hell could I have survived falling something like 75 feet to the ground at over 200 mph?

If I did fall out, I must have been high enough to open my parachute.

If I did fall out of the Columbia when it was landing from STS-1, I doubt I would actually remember it because I would have been traveling about 200 mph. I have been wondering if I had taken the parachute out of the backpack and held it under my arm. It probably acted as a drag chute that slowed me down enough to survive the fall, although I still would have been moving very fast.

Something keeps tugging at me about "screendoors" but I can't quite grasp it yet.

So they blanked my memory.....I started trying to build my life effectivly over again, finding a woman I loved and could go home to every day, and the kind of work that I thought would have a global impact on improving peace.

Ah, one night, Randy Cole and I, and another guy named Eddie I think, were running through a neighbors backyard. One of our friends had a trampoline and we would go over and jump on it sometimes. This particular night we were going through that yard and we heard a screen door slam. Eddy and Randy ran one way, I ran the other way. As it turned out, I ran the wrong way. This huge dude hopped down off some kind of embankment wall brandishing a big knife and asking why I was in their yard.
