Today, standing in the shower, was the first time, that I now recall, that I have reconciled in my conscious memory my personal activities in December 1994. I don't have direct memory of December 20th, 1994, but today for the first time I started thinking of what I can only conclude was my personal experiences at Christmas in 1994.

STS-93 marked the 95th launch of the Space Shuttle, the 26th launch of Columbia, and the 21st night launch of a Space Shuttle. It had the first female Shuttle Commander. Its primary payload was the Chandra X-ray Observatory. It would also be the last mission of Columbia until March 2002. During the interim, Columbia would be out of service for upgrading, and would not fly again until STS-109.
Five seconds after liftoff, an electrical short knocked out controllers for two main engines. The engines automatically switched to their backup controllers. Had a further short shut down two engines, the orbiter would have ditched into the ocean, although the crew could have possibly bailed out. Concurrently a pin came loose inside one engine and ruptured a cooling line, allowing a hydrogen fuel leak. This caused premature fuel exhaustion, but the vehicle safely achieved a slightly lower orbit. Had the failure propagated further, a risky transatlantic or RTLS abort would have been required.

Vice President Mike Pence was sent back to the White House on Tuesday after originally being scheduled to attend an event on the nationwide opioid crisis in New Hampshire.
The development of Mr Pence’s abrupt change in plans was initially reported by Fox News, which stated the vice president was returning to Washington due to an “emergency”.
However, officials declined to publicly cite the reason for the change throughout the day, sparking confusion and apparent online misinformation.
Marc Short, chief of staff to the vice president, later told reporters there was no emergency and that Mr Pence’s trip to New Hampshire would be rescheduled for a later date.
“The vice president was called back to the White House but there’s no cause for alarm,” Mr Short said, adding that Mr Pence’s plane never departed from Washington.
Several initial reports had suggested Air Force Two was rerouted back to Washington after having already left the capitol for the opioid event.
A reporter on Fox News said the vice president was “about to land in New Hampshire” but “turned around” due to the last-minute change, while another guest on the MSNBC network echoed those claims, saying the plane had been turned around.
Still, a senior official reportedly told the White House press pool — a rotating group of reporters covering the president — that “the VP had not left DC and he’s currently at the White House.”
Officials also said the change had nothing to do with either Mr Pence or Donald Trump's health.
Alyssa Farah, the vice president’s spokesperson, also said there was “no cause for alarm” in a tweet confirming the itinerary change.
“Something came up that required the @VP to remain in Washington, DC,” she wrote. “He looks forward to rescheduling the trip to New Hampshire very soon.”
The roundtable discussion Mr Pence was scheduled to participate in Manchester, New Hampshire involved patients from the Granite Recovery Centre headquarters.
Mr Pence was also reportedly expected to discuss illegal drug trafficking across the state.
The White House did not return requests for comment.

'Visionary' industrialist made his mark on media, sports, automaking and more

For most of the 20th Century, you couldn't go anywhere in Greater Cincinnati without seeing or hearing the name "Crosley."
Crosley engineers built the world's most powerful transmitter, an unprecedented 500,000 watts, under WLW-AM's distinctive diamond-shaped tower on Tylersville Road in West Chester Township. It broadcast on an experimental basis 1934-39, before the U.S. ordered it shut down.
When President Franklin Roosevelt flipped a switch in the White House to activate the transmitter on May 2, 1934, Crosley spoke briefly in Italian, hoping radio inventor Guglielmo Marconi would hear him halfway around the world. There was no evidence he did.
Crosley died on March, 28, 1961
