Amazon Developing ‘Ringworld’, ‘Lazarus’ & ‘Snow Crash’ In Genre Series Push

Amazon has set up three high-profile drama series for development: Ringworld, based on Larry Niven’s classic science fiction book

The streaming platform has been ramping up its slate with new projects as part of a programming strategy overhaul in search of big, buzzy shows. A major emphasis has been put on fast-tracking big-scope genre drama series in the mold of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, with Sharon Tal, brought in earlier this year as Head Of Event Series, tasked with spearheading efforts. The deals for Ringworld, Lazarus and Snow Crash are part of that push.

Ringworld, a co-production with MGM, is based on Niven’s science fiction book series from the 1970s and tells the story of Louis Gridley Wu, a bored man celebrating his 200th birthday in a technologically advanced, future Earth.

Um, I have some stuff for you to look at. Just, um, pass-pass them down. Um, you'll have to share them, cause I um...

...Sorry, I—Sorry, I don't have enough of those.

Amazon Increases Production Spending for 2018, Developing Three New Sci-Fi Series

By DEBRA BIRNBAUM

Amazon is dramatically ramping up its production for next year, moving forward with three new high-concept series, Variety has learned. These new efforts represent a significant production investment from the studio, which is currently in preproduction, production or post on 67 TV series and 20 movies around the world.

The streaming service is developing the following:

“Ringworld,” a co-production with MGM, is based on Larry Niven’s sci-fi book series from the 70’s. It tells the story of Louis Gridley Wu, a bored man celebrating his 200th birthday in a technologically-advanced, future Earth. Upon being offered one of the open positions on a voyage, Louis joins a young woman and two aliens to explore Ringworld, the remote artificial ring beyond “Known Space.”

The Slaver Weapon [ Star Trek television series episode ]

First Officer's log, stardate 4187.3. The Enterprise shuttlecraft Copernicus is en route to Starbase Two Five with an important cargo. A Slaver stasis box discovered by archaeologists on the planet Kzin.

[Shuttlecraft]

SPOCK: These stasis boxes are the most remarkable thing the Slavers ever produced. Time stands still inside a stasis box. A billion years means nothing in there. What is it, Lieutenant?

UHURA: I've studied the history of the Slaver Empire, but it's sketchy. We know they were masters of all the intelligent beings in this galaxy a billion years ago, until one race revolted. Are the stasis boxes the only source of information we have?

SPOCK: The Slavers and all their subjects were exterminated in the war that followed. Intelligent life had to evolve all over again. The stasis boxes are the only remnant of those lost civilisations.

UHURA: Why is it glowing like that?

SPOCK: Mister Sulu, what is our position?

SULU: Passing Beta Lyrae, sir. One forty two degrees north east of galactic plane.

SPOCK: Most peculiar. This indicates there is another stasis box circling Beta Lyrae.

UHURA: Another one?

SPOCK: It would be most illogical that a stasis box would remain here undiscovered for so long. Beta Lyrae is one of the rare spectacles of the galaxy. Almost every ship that passes stops to see it.

UHURA: Maybe no one else was carrying a stasis box detector.

SPOCK: Possible. The only known stasis box detector is another stasis box. Still. Mister Sulu.

SULU: Yes, sir.

SPOCK: Bring us about. We'll investigate the Beta Lyrae system.

SULU: Aye, aye, sir.

SPOCK: Stasis boxes and their contents are the only remnant of a species which ruled most of this galaxy a billion years ago. Their effect on science has been incalculable. In one was found a flying belt which was the key to the artificial gravity field used by starships. Another box contained a disrupter bomb with the pin pulled. As a result, all stasis boxes are now under the jurisdiction of Starfleet, and only certain key specialists handle them. The boxes are rare, potentially dangerous, and we seem to have found a second one.

Production

Producer D. C. Fontana approached Larry Niven in 1973 to see if he would write an episode for The Animated Series, suggesting that he might adapt one of his existing stories. At the time Niven was a major up-and-coming force in the science fiction world; in 1971 his novel Ringworld was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Novel, the Nebula Award for Best Novel and the Locus Award for Best Novel. Niven's first attempt to write a teleplay introduced his Known Space setting into the Star Trek universe. The story involved a group of Outsiders who were using a quantum black hole to disable passing ships drives' in order to pirate them. Fontana advised him that the original version wouldn't work as an episode, and his second attempt proved to be "too bloody."

The Slaver Weapon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Slaver Weapon" is the fourteenth episode of the first season of the American animated science fiction television series Star Trek: The Animated Series. It first aired on NBC on December 15, 1973, and was written by Larry Niven.

Plot

On stardate 4187.3, the Enterprise shuttlecraft Copernicus, carrying Science Officer Spock, Communications Officer Lt. Uhura, and Helmsman Lt. Hikaru Sulu are en route to Starbase 25 to deliver a stasis box, a rare artifact of the Slaver culture. The now-extinct Slavers used these objects to carry weapons, valuables, scientific instruments and data. The boxes can detect each other and evidence shows that another device is located near Beta Lyrae.

Following the signal, the shuttle lands on an ice planet where the crew is captured by the hostile catlike Kzinti. The Kzinti had an empty stasis box of their own, and were using it to lure in passing starships. They are trying to steal the boxes in the hopes of finding a super weapon that will return their empire to its former greatness.

SPOCK: As with a number of discoveries, purely by accident, Lieutenant.

Aired Friday 9:00 PM Feb 02, 1996 on Showtime

Episode Summary

Dr. Sam Stein has always lived for his work. His dedication has paid off with the development of the Computer Aided Visual Environment system of CAVE, which allows doctors to jack-in directly to the brain of patients. When an accident puts his colleague Rachel Carter in a coma, Stein decides to use CAVE for his own purposes, reaching into Rachel's brain to tell her what he couldn't while she was conscious: that he loves her. Stein discovers, however, that love takes strange turns when it enters CAVE's virtual world and that the complexities of the human heart are not easily translated into bits and bytes.

UHURA: Where are we?

SPOCK: A Kzinti spacecraft.

SULU: That isn't good. Kzinti aren't supposed to have phasers, are they?

SPOCK: The Treaty of Sirius does not permit them any weapons at all, beyond police vessels. Obviously, the treaty has been broken.

SULU: A police web. We won't be able to move unless we can turn it off somehow.

SPOCK: The lean, bedraggled one is a reader of minds.

UHURA: I've heard all Kzinti telepaths are unhappy neurotics. He fits the description.
