I think it was my first thought after waking up this morning that I used to date Julia Roberts a long time ago.

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

The Time Machine (Heinemann text)/Chapter III

The Time Machine by H. G. Wells

Chapter III.

'I told some of you last Thursday of the principles of the Time Machine, and showed you the actual thing itself, incomplete in the workshop. There it is now, a little travel-worn, truly; and one of the ivory bars is cracked, and a brass rail bent; but the rest of it's sound enough. I expected to finish it on Friday, but on Friday, when the putting together was nearly done, I found that one of the nickel bars was exactly one inch too short, and this I had to get remade; so that the thing was not complete until this morning. It was at ten o'clock to-day that the first of all Time Machines began its career. I gave it a last tap, tried all the screws again, put one more drop of oil on the quartz rod, and sat myself in the saddle. I suppose a suicide who holds a pistol to his skull feels much the same wonder at what will come next as I felt then.

June 11 – The first monkey astronaut, Albert I, is launched into space from White Sands, New Mexico.

NASA

A Brief History of Animals in Space

Before humans actually went into space, one of the prevailing theories of the perils of space flight was that humans might not be able to survive long periods of weightlessness. For several years, there had been a serious debate among scientists about the effects of prolonged weightlessness. American and Russian scientists utilized animals - mainly monkeys, chimps and dogs - in order to test each country's ability to launch a living organism into space and bring it back alive and unharmed.

On June 11, 1948, a V-2 Blossom launched into space from White Sands, New Mexico carrying Albert I, a rhesus monkey. Lack of fanfare and documentation made Albert an unsung hero of animal astronauts.

Quotes

Jack Ridley: [talking to TV] Attaboy, Gus!

[talking to Yeager]

Jack Ridley: Pull that stuff on flight test, it's all over for him. I say he screwed the pooch, pardner. Plain and simple.

Chuck Yeager: Yeah, well, sometimes you get a pooch that can't be screwed, ya know?

Liaison Man: [chuckling] Exactly! Right now the President's got his own problems with the Bay of Pigs, he doesn't want the astronauts' image tarnished. Nothing these guys do is gonna be called a failure. You'd think the public would know they're just doing what monkeys have done.

Chuck Yeager: Monkeys? You think a monkey knows he's sittin' on a rocket that might explode? These astronaut boys, they know that, see? I'll tell you somethin'. Takes a special kind of man to volunteer for a suicide mission, especially when it's on TV. Ol' Gus, he did alright.

David Philby: Why do you waste your time on that crackpot?

Alexander Hartdegen: Because he has some very interesting ideas.

David Philby: A professor at Columbia should not be corresponding with a crazy German bookkeeper.

Alexander Hartdegen: He's a patent clerk, not a bookkeeper. I think Mr. Einstein deserves all the support I can give him.

WALLACE: (He scrunches his eyes shut in a desperate bid to concentrate.) OK, OK, um, um, um, if my math works ...

Dr. RUSH: We can't assume that!

WALLACE: I said, 'If.' Then, if it works, then it's not a power supply issue, it's the Gate address.

RUSH: We've known the first eight symbols for years. The ninth has to be the Point of Origin.

WALLACE: So ... what if we're not on the planet you're supposed to be dialling from?

RUSH: This is where we are!

WALLACE: OK, what if we are not supposed to be here?
