AROUND THE WORLD; Women in England Rally Against Missiles

Published: December 13, 1982
Thousands of women linked arms today to form an unbroken nine-mile chain around a British air base to protest plans to site 96 cruise nuclear missiles there.
The unused Greenham Common base being taken over by 1,300 United States servicemen has been chosen as the site for 96 of the 572 cruise and Pershing 2 missiles to be deployed in Western Europe by NATO starting in December 1983.
In West Germany, thousands of antinuclear demonstrators held protest rallies throughout the country and blocked the gates of about 20 United States and Canadian military bases. Protesters also blocked the entrance to the headquarters of United States military forces in Europe at Stuttgart.
The big British protest was the prelude to the start of a new campaign Monday by women to blockade the gates of Greenham Common base to hinder preparations for receiving the missiles.

AROUND THE WORLD; 50 Englishwomen Keep Protest Alive at U.S. Base

About 50 women maintained a picket line outside a United States military base today despite temperatures in the low 30's and vowed to continue protesting until at least spring against the deployment of American nuclear weapons there.
''I am a mother, a grandmother, I have a comfortable home to go to,'' said Jane Dennett, a 58-year-old war widow who has been at the camp for three months.
''I do not need to be here in the mud. But this is important and I will see it through.''
''Our next mass protest will be this spring,'' she said. ''But we shall stay at this camp between now and then.'' The demonstrators, organized by women's groups and camping illegally in makeshift tents outside the base for months, are trying to prevent the construction of silos for 96 cruise missiles at the Greenham Common, Berkshire, air base, 50 miles west of London.
Two people were hurt and three were arrested in clashes Monday between some 800 demonstrators and several hundred policemen. The police guarded the base today but there were no reports of violence.

"We're Not Gonna Take It"
We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore
We've got the right to choose and there ain't no way we'll lose it
This is our life, this is our song
We'll fight the powers that be just, don't pick our destiny 'cause
You don't know us, you don't belong
We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore
Oh, you're so condescending, your gall is never ending
We don't want nothing, not a thing, from you
Your life is trite and jaded, boring and confiscated
If that's your best, your best won't do
We're right, yeah
We're free, yeah
We'll fight, yeah
You'll see, yeah
We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore
We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore
No way!
We're right, yeah
We're free, yeah
We'll fight, yeah
You'll see, yeah
We're not gonna take it
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore
We're not gonna take it (no!)
No, we ain't gonna take it
We're not gonna take it anymore (just you try and make us)
We're not gonna take it (come on)
No, we ain't gonna take it (you're all worthless and weak)
We're not gonna take it anymore (now drop and give me twenty)
We're not gonna take it (a pledge pin)
No, we ain't gonna take it (on your uniform)
We're not gonna take it anymore

Clearing The Air About The Ability Of Plants To Clean It
October 18, 1993 By Dr. Allan Bruckheim, Tribune Media Services.
Q-In the old days, when you were hospitalized, people would send you "get well" plants and flowers. At night, the nurse would come in and take the plants out, so they wouldn't use the oxygen in the room. During the day, they "cleaned" the air in the room. Couldn't plants be used to cure the air inside buildings where people get sick from the recirculated air?
A-I remember those times, too, as they don't seem to do that anymore. Yes, it's true that plants only produce oxygen during the day, using the process known as photosynthesis. And plants do use some of that same oxygen at night for their own metabolism. But it would take a great number of plants in a room to affect the circulating air in any measurable way.
Plants do absorb some of the contaminants found in buildings "suffering" from the so-called sick-building syndrome. Experiments are under way to see how well they can achieve this task, which is a matter of importance to maintaining a supply of fresh air in the closed environment of a space station, for example. And so the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is more than interested.

7 Astronauts Fly High in Orbit, Draw Blood in Name of Science
October 19, 1993 From Associated Press
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — Columbia and its seven astronauts blasted off on a belated mission Monday, carrying 48 rats, that will be poked, prodded and in some cases decapitated by guillotine and dissected in orbit.
All in the name of science.
Doctor Zefram COCHRANE: ...or both, ...but I'm ready to make history! Ha, ha, ha.
TROI (on intercom): Troi to Commander Riker.
RIKER: Riker here.
[Titan V control room]
TROI: We're ready to open the launch door.
RIKER (on intercom): Go ahead.
[Phoenix cockpit]
RIKER: Look at that!
COCHRANE: What, you don't have a moon in the twenty-fourth century?
RIKER: Sure we do. It looks a lot different. There are fifty million people living on the moon in my time. You can see Tycho City, New Berlin, even Lake Armstrong on a day like this.
COCHRANE: Aha.
RIKER: And you know, Doctor...
COCHRANE: Please ...don't tell me it's all thanks to me. I've heard enough about the great Zefram Cochrane. I don't know who writes your history books or where you get your information from, but you people got some pretty funny ideas about me. You all look at me as if I'm some kind of saint or visionary or something.
RIKER: I don't think you're a saint, Doc, but you did have a vision. ...And now we're sitting in it.
COCHRANE: You wanna know what my vision is? ...Dollar signs! Money! I didn't build this ship to usher in a new era for humanity. You think I wanna go to the stars? I don't even like to fly. I take trains. I built this ship so that I could retire to some tropical island filled with ...naked women. That's Zefram Cochrane. That's his vision. This other guy you keep talking about. This historical figure. I never met him. I can't imagine I ever will.
RIKER: Someone once said 'Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make it's own judgements'.
COCHRANE: Rhetorical nonsense. Who said that?
RIKER: You did, ten years from now. ...You've got fifty-eight minutes, Doc. You better get on with the checklist.
