Shuttle Crew Toasts Telescope's Release

February 20, 1997

As a stronger, smarter Hubble Space Telescope drifted farther away Wednesday, the shuttle Discovery's astronauts couldn't wait to get back home Friday to celebrate their service mission.

"I'll buy for the whole crew, and they're going to take me up on that," chief spacewalker Mark Lee said as his six crew mates cheered. "Up here, we've got some orange mango drink and some lemonade, but that's about as stiff as it gets. So I'm ready for a margarita."

Discovery is scheduled for a rare nighttime landing at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Albanian revolt of 1912

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Albanian revolt of 1912 was the last Albanian revolt in the Ottoman Empire and lasted from January until August 1912. The revolt ended when the Ottoman government agreed to fulfill the rebels' demands on September 4, 1912.

Aftermath

Further information: First Balkan War

The success of the Albanian Revolt and news from the Italo-Turkish War sent a strong signal to the neighboring countries that the Ottoman Empire was weak. The members of the Balkan League decided that they couldn't waste such a golden opportunity to strike at a weakened Ottoman state. Demonstration of the weakness of the Ottoman Empire and promises of Albanian autonomy threatened Serbian ambitions for the incorporation of these territories into its domain. The Kingdom of Serbia opposed the plan for this rather large Albanian state (whose territories are now considered to be the concept of Greater Albania), preferring a partition of the European territory of the Ottoman Empire among the four Balkan allies.

There was something pleasant about hearing that large "12th Man" flag flapping loudly in the wind yesterday.

Remind me of being out to sea at night on a U.S Navy warship and hearing the battle flag streaming in the wind.

If those notes I made that point so ELOQUENTLY to Robert Gibson and Ellen Baker, M.D. are coincidence then I am ONE HELL OF A COINCIDENCE *MACHINE*!

So you better watch out!

I don't know why this would have anything to do with Ellen Baker, STS-71 and 01/04/2008.

Don't know why I would make such an association.

Aha. Now I think I do. Harbaugh.

First I noticed Bowersox and Chilton.

But it must be Harbaugh. He is part of Group 12.

The din in front swelled to a tremendous chorus. The youth and his fellows were frozen to silence. They could see a flag that tossed in the smoke angrily. Near it were the blurred and agitated forms of troops. There came a turbulent stream of men across the fields. A battery changing position at a frantic gallop scattered the stragglers right and left.

A shell screaming like a storm banshee went over the huddled heads of the reserves. It landed in the grove, and exploding redly flung the brown earth. There was a little shower of pine needles.

Bullets began to whistle among the branches and nip at the trees. Twigs and leaves came sailing down. It was as if a thousand axes, wee and invisible, were being wielded. Many of the men were constantly dodging and ducking their heads.

The lieutenant of the youth's company was shot in the hand. He began to swear so wondrously that a nervous laugh went along the regimental line. The officer's profanity sounded conventional. It relieved the tightened senses of the new men. It was as if he had hit his fingers with a tack hammer at home.

He held the wounded member carefully away from his side so that the blood would not drip upon his trousers.

The captain of the company, tucking his sword under his arm, produced a handkerchief and began to bind with it the lieutenant's wound. And they disputed as to how the binding should be done.

The battle flag in the distance jerked about madly. It seemed to be struggling to free itself from an agony. The billowing smoke was filled with horizontal flashes.

Men rushing swiftly emerged from it. They grew in numbers until it was seen that the whole command was fleeing. The flag suddenly sank down as if dying. Its motion as it fell was a gesture of despair.

Wild yells came from behind the walls of smoke. A sketch in gray and red dissolved into a moblike body of men who galloped like wild horses. The veteran regiments on the right and left of the 304th immediately began to jeer. With the passionate song of the bullets and the banshee shrieks of shells were mingled loud catcalls and bits of facetious advice concerning places of safety.

But the new regiment was breathless with horror. "Gawd! Saunders's got crushed!" whispered the man at the youth's elbow. They shrank back and crouched as if compelled to await a flood.

The youth shot a swift glance along the blue ranks of the regiment. The profiles were motionless, carven; and afterward he remembered that the color sergeant was standing with his legs apart, as if he expected to be pushed to the ground.

The following throng went whirling around the flank. Here and there were officers carried along on the stream like exasperated chips. They were striking about them with their swords and with their left fists, punching every head they could reach. They cursed like highwaymen.

Shuttle Crew Toasts Telescope's Release

February 20, 1997

From Times Wire Services

The $2-billion Hubble observatory, anchored for nearly a week in the shuttle's open cargo bay, was set free to rousing music after being modernized and repaired in five wearying spacewalks, conducted one night after another.

"It's been sitting in the mother's nest in the shuttle quite comfortable, and now our little baby's out on its own," said NASA's chief Hubble scientist, Ed Weiler.

The orbiting Hubble will undergo an eight- to 10-week checkout by ground controllers before it can start gazing deeper into the universe with its new infrared eyes and two-dimensional imaging sensors.

"These are all instruments built in 1990s with today's technology and far surpass anything we have on the old space telescope," Weiler said. "We just don't know what we're going to see with these new instruments."

The first images are to be released in May.

"Thanks to you . . . the window on the universe is about to be open just a little bit more," NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin told the crew.

Hubble and Discovery parted company 385 miles above Africa's western coast, the highest orbit ever for the telescope thanks to a gradual, gentle lift on the shuttle.

It was the second service call to the Hubble, which was put in orbit in 1990.

In 1993, spacewalking astronauts fixed the Hubble's blurred vision, caused by a defective mirror.

The latest mission was nearly flawless.

"From my viewpoint, we did more than we set out to do," John Campbell, a Hubble manager, said. "I'd say we're 110% successful."

One big surprise was peeling insulation on Hubble's sun-drenched side.

The astronauts covered the six gaping holes with jury-rigged patches during their fifth spacewalk, added specifically to repair the insulation.

In 1999, astronauts will return to equip Hubble with a new camera, computer, thermal insulation and solar wings. NASA hopes to keep operating Hubble until at least 2005.

As Spirits Fly With Atlantis, Delays a Mir Inconvenience : Space: The shuttle pierces a blue sky after Florida storms scratched two launch dates. Linkup with Russian station is on track for Thursday.

June 28, 1995 K.C. COLE TIMES SCIENCE WRITER

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — The space shuttle Atlantis cracked open a robin's-egg-blue Florida sky with a deafening roar Tuesday afternoon as hundreds of spectators and NASA officials cheered and sighed with collective relief.

Pounding rain with lightning had been soaking the area for days, preventing two scheduled launches last week and threatening to keep the five U.S. and two Russian crew members indefinitely on the ground. But the storms held off Tuesday.

Atlantis had to begin its journey during a 10-minute window beginning at 3:32 p.m. EDT in order to make its planned docking with the Russian Mir space station, now set for Thursday morning. Mir passed over Kennedy Space Center just minutes before Atlantis took off. By the time the shuttle left the ground, Mir was over Iraq.

"Liftoff of the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission that will herald a new day of international cooperation in space," launch commentator Bruce Buckingham announced as the shuttle, looking like a toy plane attached to a mile-high flamethrower, rode into orbit. The blastoff marked America's 100th manned trip into space.

The mission is the first joint U.S.-Russian mission since a U.S. Apollo spacecraft linked up briefly with a Russian Soyuz in 1975. This time, the two craft are to mate for five days at more than 200 miles above the Earth while the crew conducts several dozen experiments on biological effects of zero gravity to set the stage for building an international space station.

Waiting on Mir for a ride home is astronaut Norman E. Thagard, who broke the record for the longest U.S. spaceflight on June 6, when he logged 85 days on Mir. His two crew mates, cosmonauts Vladimir Dezhurov and Gennady Strekalov, will also be hitching a ride home on Atlantis.

Meanwhile, cosmonauts Anatoly Y. Solovyev, and Nikolai M. Budarin, who will ride up on Atlantis, will remain in space as the next Mir crew.

Atlantis is commanded by Navy Capt. Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson. In the pilot's seat is Air Force Lt. Col. Charles J. Precourt. The mission specialists are Dr. Ellen S. Baker, Gregory J. Harbaugh and Bonnie J. Dunbar.

STEPHEN KING HIT BY VAN, IN SERIOUS CONDITION

Tribune News Services

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

June 20, 1999

Horror author Stephen King was seriously injured when he was struck by a van while walking Saturday, police said.

King was walking south on the shoulder of Route 5 in North Lovell when a motorist lost control of his Dodge Caravan because of a dog that was running loose inside, Oxford County Sheriff's deputy Matt Baker said.

Officials at Central Maine Medical Center said the 51-year-old King, who was in serious condition, was conscious.

King's family asked that no information about his injuries be released, hospital spokesman Randy Dustin said.

Baker said that, according to witnesses, the driver, Bryan Smith, 41, of Fryeburg, did not appear to be speeding. He said charges will not be filed.

King has written dozens of novels, including "The Shining," "Carrie" and "Pet Sematary."

(CNN) -- Horror author Stephen King was seriously injured when he was struck by a minivan while walking in North Lovell, Maine, Saturday, Maine State Police said.

King, 51, was walking south on the shoulder of a road in North Lovell, where he owns a home, at about 4:30 p.m. when a motorist approaching from behind lost control of his Dodge Caravan, Oxford County Sheriff's deputy Matt Baker said. Baker said a dog in the van distracted the driver.

King was transported to Northern Cumberland Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Central Maine Hospital.

According to Laird Covey, vice president of medical affairs for Central Maine hospital, King was conscious and alert, in serious but stable condition, and was able to communicate with his family. Officials said the injuries were orthopedic in nature but family didn't release the details of them.

Late Saturday night King was being prepared for surgery, and was expected to remain in the hospital for several days.

Police said charges will not be filed against the driver.

An eyewitness at the accident scene said King "was breathing and laying in a heap and he was all tangled and I could tell his leg was broken."

Master of horror fiction

King's prolific work -- horror novels, short stories and novellas -- has earned him the title "Master of Horror." A number of his novels have been turned into major films, including "Carrie", "The Shining", "Firestarter", "Christine", "Pet Semetary", "Misery" and "Dolores Claiborne."

Three novellas from the book "Different Seasons" were also major films -- "Apt Pupil," "The Body," titled "Stand by Me" on the screen, and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption," which, in the film version was titled "Shawshank Redemption."

King's books have been translated into 33 languages and published in over 35 different countries. There are more than 300 million copies of his novels in publication. King has also written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.

Stephen King Recalls the Accident That Almost Ended His Life 20 Years Ago Today

BY MICHAEL KENNEDY – ON JUN 19, 2019 IN MOVIE NEWS

Iconic author Stephen King recalls the horrifying auto accident that almost ended his life exactly 20 years ago today, on June 19, 1999. While King has been a giant of both the literary world and the overall pop culture landscape since the smash success of his first novel, 1974's Carrie, he'll be the first to say that he was by no means an overnight success as a writer. King toiled away in low-paying jobs while trying to make financial ends meet for years before he hit it big, and those beginnings seem to have contributed to just how humble a man he remains to this day.

King genuinely seems to enjoy communicating with his fans, and regularly fires off messages targeted at this "constant readers" via social media. While at age 71, King is now firmly established as a legend in his own time when it comes to writing horror fiction, fans will no doubt remember just how close the world came to losing the author way back in the summer of 1999.

On the afternoon of June 19, 1999, King was out walking near his Maine home, when a distracted driver plowed his minivan into him. King sustained multiple serious injuries, and remained in the hospital for nearly a month. While King pulled through, the severe pain he was left with afterward at one point led the author to announce a retirement from writing. Thankfully, that obviously didn't stick, and King continues to pen new tales of terror. Today on his Twitter account, King took a look back at the traumatic incident, including how doctors considered amputating his leg. Check out his post below.

King is clearly very thankful that he survived the accident, and was able to eventually recover physically. It boggles the mind to think of how many King novels and short stories wouldn't exist had that driver - who himself sadly died by suicide a few years later - ended up unintentionally ending the best-selling author's life. Since 1999, King has either written or co-written a whopping 24 novels, with a 25th, The Institute, arriving in September 2019. He's also published four new collections of short stories.

It's safe to say many King devotees don't want to imagine a timeline in which their favorite writer never got to pen such acclaimed works as Under the Dome, 11/22/63, Revival, Mr. Mercedes, and Doctor Sleep, not to mention complete his Dark Tower saga. King also wouldn't have lived to see the current resurgence in Hollywood's appetite for adapting his work, such as the recent adaptations of IT, Pet Sematary, and Gerald's Game. Doctor Sleep and The Stand adaptations are also coming soon, as is IT: Chapter Two. Thankfully, we don't live in the Stephen King-less section of the multiverse.

The accident that put Bryan Smith in the spotlight — running over horror writer Stephen King — was far from his biggest worry before he was found dead in his trailer last weekend.

He took pain medications for a longstanding back injury. One of his arms was weak. Carpal tunnel syndrome and depression only added to the problems of a 43-year-old grandfather who was surviving on disability payments.

Smith was buried Tuesday. Autopsy results were inconclusive, and the state medical examiner's office was awaiting toxicology reports before determining a cause of death.

Police, however, said there is no evidence Smith killed himself. And friends and relatives said he wasn't particularly upset about the accident that injured King, nor was he tormented by the writer's fans. He was looking forward to getting his driver's license back in January.

Smith smashed into King in June 1999 as the author walked along a two-lane highway near his summer home. Smith said he looked away for a few seconds because his dog was getting into a cooler in the van.

King was hospitalized with a broken leg, broken hip, broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Smith at first described the crash as an "accident without a cause" before apologizing to King and accepting responsibility for the accident. He lost his license and was given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.

Smith seemed untroubled by the people who occasionally snapped pictures of his trailer or made obscene gestures at him, said Ron Ela, a sheet-metal worker who occasionally gave Smith rides.

"We kind of joked a little bit, and laughed about it," he said.

Lisa Coury, who dated Smith for two years until a few weeks before his death, described Smith as a talented mechanic and woodworker who had been told he would probably soon be in a wheelchair because of the back injury he suffered in 1979.

His legs also were becoming numb, she said, but he insisted on helping her with car repairs, plumbing or other chores.

"He shouldn't have been doing it, but he was just really kindhearted and wanted to help," she said. "It would take him a long time and he would be in even more excruciating pain after."

Smith wanted to buy a computer so that he might design instructions for building furniture. He mentioned teaching car repair classes, and contemplated writing a book about his life and the accident.

The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger

Stephen King

(from internet transcript)

20

For the first time the gunslinger wondered consciously how the boy had come to this place, with dry and man killing leagues of desert all around it. But he would not make it his concern; not yet, at least. “Make a guess. Long ago?”

“No. Not long. I haven’t been here long.”

The fire lit in him again. He grabbed the can and drank from it with hands that trembled the smallest bit. A snatch of the cradle song recurred, but this time, instead of his mother’s face, he saw the scarred face of Alice, who had been his woman in the now-defunct town of Tull. “How long? A week? Two? three?”

The boy looked at him distractedly. “Yes.”

“Which one?”

“A week. Or two. I didn’t come out. He didn’t even drink. I thought he might be the ghost of a priest I was scared. I’ve been scared almost all the time.” His face quivered like crystal on the edge of the ultimate, destructive high note. “He didn’t even build a fire. He just sat there. I don’t even know if he went to sleep.”

Close! He was closer than he had ever been. In spite of his extreme dehydration, his hands felt faintly moist; greasy.

“There’s some dried meat,” the boy said.

“All right” The gunslinger nodded. “Good.”

The boy got up to fetch it, his knees popping slightly. He made a fine straight figure. The desert had not yet sapped him. His arms were thin, but the skin, although tanned, had not dried and cracked. He’s got juice, the gunslinger thought He drank from the can again. He’s got juice and he didn’t come from this place.

Jake came back with a pile of dried jerky on what looked like a sun-scoured breadboard. The meat was tough, stringy, and salty enough to make the cankered lining of the gunslinger’s mouth sing. He ate and drank until he felt logy, and then settled back. The boy ate only a little.

The gunslinger regarded him steadily, and the boy looked back at him. “Where did you come from, Jake?” He asked finally.

“I don’t know.” The boy frowned. “I did know. I knew when I came here, but it’s all fuzzy now, like a bad dream when you wake up. I have lots of bad dreams.”

“Did somebody bring you?”

“No,” the boy said. “I was just here.”

“You’re not making any sense,” the gunslinger said flatly.

Quite suddenly the boy seemed on the verge of tears. “I can’t help it. I was just here. And now you’ll go away and I’ll starve because you ate up almost all my food. I didn’t ask to be here. I don’t like it. It’s spooky.”

“Don’t feel so sorry for yourself. Make do.”

“I didn’t ask to be here,” the boy repeated bewildered defiance.

The gunslinger ate another piece of the meat, chewing the salt out of it before swallowing. The boy had become part of it, and the gunslinger was convinced he told the truth —he had not asked for it. It was too bad. He himself … he had asked for it But he had not asked for the game to become this dirty. He had not asked to be allowed to turn his guns on the unarmed populace of Tull; had not asked to shoot Allie, her face marked by that strange, shining scar; had not asked to be faced with a choice between the obsession of his duty and his quest and criminal amorality. The man in black had begun to pull bad strings in his desperation, if it was the man in black who had pulled this par ticular string. It was not fair to ring in innocent bystanders and make them speak lines they didn’t understand on a strange stage. Allie, he thought Allie at least had been into the world in her own self-illusory way. But this boy… this God-damned boy….

“Tell me what you can remember,” he told Jake.

“It’s only a little. It doesn’t seem to make any sense any more.”

“Tell me. Maybe I can pick up the sense.

“There was a place… the one before this one. A high place with lots of rooms and a patio where you could look at tall buildings and water. There was a statue that stood in the water.”

“A statue in the water?”

“Yes. A lady with a crown and a torch.”

“Are you making this up?”

“I guess I must be,” the boy said hopelessly.

The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands

Stephen King

(3/5/1991)

(opening summary of previous installments)

Roland learns that Mort may stand at the heart of another mystery as well, one which is also a potentially mind-destroying paradox. For the victim Mort is stalking at the time the gunslinger steps into his life is none other than Jake, the boy Roland met at the way station and lost under the mountains. Roland has never had any cause to doubt Jake's story of how he died in our world, or any cause to question who Jake's murderer was - Walter, of course. Jake saw him dressed as a priest as the crowd gathered around the spot where he lay dying, and Roland has never doubted the description.

Call Northside 777 (1948) Movie Script

(from internet transcript)

I am authorized by the state's attorney's office to state categorically... that in the opinion of our office, the facts set forth in Wiecek's behalf.... do not indicate that he was a victim of a miscarriage of justice.

We're here to protect the interests of the people of this state... not to sell newspapers.

Mr. Chairman...gentlemen...the governor ordered this hearing for the purpose of arriving at the truth. If you fail to consider every item of evidence no matter how improperly presented you have defeated the very purpose of this hearing.
