Bikini's Kent, Part 5. Address to the Nation Announcing Decision To Resign the Office of President

Not sure but my sleeping dreams might have become less violent.

There's still bloody violence but I don't seem to be the one doing it.

There are two sleeping dreams from after I finally fell asleep early this morning that have stayed with me after being awake.

One is about me in a house. Some place I've never seen before in the real world. I might have been moving in there. Seemed nice. Plenty of room.

There was a long flight of stairs leading down towards the front door of the house. In the dream, most of what I saw was from the perspective of my own eyes and around the landing there at the top of the stairs, which delineated the boundary of my personal property.

Some other stuff happened, I might have been unpacking, and some other stuff happened, and there was a young boy playing around the bottom of the long flight of stairs. A doorway to the right-side led to where he was staying with adults.

At one point, he started hitting me with his water-gun. In my sleeping dream, I could feel the water on my skin.

I responded with my own fire. From a non-lethal, harmless toy gun. We used to call them "pea shooters". I could see the harmless, non-lethal projectiles from my toy gun hitting him in the chest.

It was all big fun.

At another point he almost walked up the stairs onto my floor but I turned him around. The man in the space behind the door at the bottom of the stairs did walk up there before turning around but that is vague in my mind. Another part I remember might have happened before the frolicking scene. I had heard voices from the bottom of the stairs and I could see slightly beyond the open doorway below. There was a man who seemed to own the place, the kid with the water-gun, and a really hot looking slender woman. Probably his mom. She looked really great. Until she turned around. Then I saw the tattoos, body ink. Disgusting.

The next sleeping dream was a lot more violent and was real violence. I don't feel much like writing about it. A woman was traveling ahead of me. We were in an athletic competition and we were working together. There is no memory I have that is familiar with this sleeping dream this morning. I have provided credible evidence before that my sleeping dreams are sometimes about my work, past and present. This sleeping dream was nothing I could explain from real life. That woman was getting impatient with me and my progress so she took off ahead of me and was soon out of my sight. I had a compass on one of my boots but I couldn't read it very well because of the blood that covered the surface of my boot. I saw signs of children playing there on the dirt road in the middle of a forest. I reached another junction in the dirt road and that woman was nowhere in sight and I said out loud that I hoped she turned to the right. I remember from the sleeping dream that I finally read my compass and I had turned so that I was traveling almost due north. I was aware, or seemed to be, this has become vague now, that something was wrong with my direction of travel. I knew that I had to turn east at the first opportunity and this road junction was that direction. I had traveled only a short distance when the real violence started. There were several of them. I clearly saw that one had just fired a wooden arrow at me and that it had passed down my left side, missing me. At this point, I decided to let The Incredibles, whoever they were, take care of that violent crowd. I told myself to take cover under the dirt. That was my "power", I seemed to be telling myself. I could feel it in the sleeping dream. I pulled the dirt over me like it was a blanket. I wasn't totally satisfied with the result but I told myself they would have to be literally right on top of me to spot me. The rest of it is vague now. I might have uncovered myself to find only large splotches of blood left on the ground.

Something else happened but that's vague now too. Was mildly disturbing. Walked into a building. The clerk in there might have been a zombie, but that's vague. That was a store that sold mobile phones. I walked in and the phones began hovering and were beginning to attack me. But something happened, they might have lost power, and nothing happened. Seemed to be something else but it's gone now.

One I recognized as an artistic rendition in ink spanning from one of her shoulder's to the other of a large pair of wings on the skin at the top of her upper torso, upper-chest area.

Lately I have been contemplating the onset of dementia or senility. I'm only 54 years old so what's the possibility for me? I think about how people many years older than I and that are now afflicted must have started to sense one day the onset of incapacitation. I would just sit here again for another day at this desk and ignore those thoughts - for one reason, I hear other people use that as an excuse to cover up their incompetence at their work - but for me, I know my mind. I think about ignoring it and continue slaving away here on my own personal initiative and then I think about my feet. And the rest of the my body. Still seems like yesterday in my mind I was an Ironman triathlete. But my physical body scoffs at such nostalgia. The possibility has also occurred to me that I am experiencing a condition most people know as "burn-out". Me, I don't think I've ever worked as hard at something, in terms of commitment and mental concentration and other things, as I have at this impossible task I've taken on. Since those days I was liberated from the VA hospital in Seattle in 2005. Every day since then has been working almost every waking hour at this task. Even while drunk. I spent most, maybe most, of those first ten years drunk many days. Hard for me to even admit because I don't want to think about it too much.

Soooo, let's think of something else. Here's a woman every regular guy on the planet wants to get a stream of hot liquid from. I've been focused on her in recent days because she's in Kent, where this debacle of mine first started all those years ago.

"Piano Man"

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin

He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes."

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be

He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me."
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place."

Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life

And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call "Loneliness"
But it's better than drinking alone

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say, "Man, what are you doing here?"

Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright

Policeman: Sounds like they're chasing those idiots up and down every back road we got.

Leon: Hey, we'll get them on one of those video shows, you know, like World's craziest police chases, what do you think?

Rick: What I think, Leon, is that you need to stay focused. Make sure you got a round in the chamber and your safety off.

Leon realizes he didn't do that and corrects his mistake.

Shane: Would be kind of cool to get on one of them shows.

Work

Our immune system protects us against attacks by microorganisms and rejects foreign tissue. Part of our immunity has a hereditary basis, but part of it is acquired and is not present in the fetus. In 1949 Macfarlane Burnet theorized that the ability to distinguish between one's own and foreign tissue is not hereditary but is acquired during the fetus stage. The theory was substantiated when Peter Medawar succeeded in performing transplants of tissue between different mouse fetuses. The results had significance for organ transplants.

from my private journal, as me, Kerry Burgess, typed after being released from the USA Veterans Affairs psychiatric hospital and while sitting in a grungy two-computer room in a homeless shelter on the waterfront in downtown Seattle:

From: Kerry Burgess

Subject: Journal June 12, 2006, Supplemental

There must be some reason to these thoughts [ , I think now having just awoken from sleep, ] I was having awhile back about the opening scenes to the upcoming movie HALO. I was thinking of how the story goes behind the military person that inspired Master Chief. It begins with the real MCPO arriving at his post on some planet. It is an isolated post in some kind of wasteland, desert, mountainous region. He arrives, talks with a few people, walks around. The structure is some kind of pre-fab building with a lot of walkways and observation positions, a lot of defensive positions. You can hear the clanking of deckplates and gratings as people walk around. MCPO finds a place to sit down his gear and look out over the land. He places a photo of an attractive blond woman, a weather forecaster, on a ledge in front of him and wistfully remembers better times. After awhile, he is sent on some kind of recon mission and climbs into an aircraft that is sitting on a landing pad a few levels above the other troops. The aircraft is some kind of advanced vtol craft and you can see some similarities in the window structure to a Seahawk helo. as MCPO pilots the craft up and starts moving out, he sees a large threatening group of one of the planets native species approaching. They move in a long, herd-like stream and he can tell that at their speed, they will definitely over-run the station. He immediately lands back on the pad and runs, with deckplates clanking, but leaving his weapon in the aircraft, and runs down to the main level and jumps over the ledge to the ground. He grabbed a couple of flares on the way out and starts trying to distract the herd towards him and away from the station. They are large cow-sized rat-looking creatures, that are fast, but at his peak speed, he can out run them but he isn't sure if they have greater endurance. He runs out and away for a while and then runs into a cave system that turns into a maze. He has some near-misses from the lead rats, but he manages to leap up onto a ledge and run in another direction although they manage to keep following him. He finds his way out of the cave and sees the station in the distance, thankfully he has bought them enough time to bring all the defenses online and there is a pretty chance they will be able to fight off the herd. As he run towards the safety of the station, he finds himself with one leg hanging over the ledge of a deep gorge, having almost run over the edge. He turns around that the herd is running flat out lemming-style towards him. He curses the rat-bastards just as the first one slams into him and drives him over the ledge along with all of them to their death a thousand feet below. Later, a group of marines venture out to dig him out from under that carcasses of the rats. One makes an off-hand comment about how he thought MCPO was invincible. The scene moves around MCPO as he is lying on the ground and you see a similarity in the shape of his helmet to the look of Master Chief in Halo. Then, the scene changes to the construction of Master Chief. I don't know what MC is constructed of, but if his smallest compenent are nuts and bolts, that is how this scene begins, of his smallest components being brought together through an automated process of construction. The musical theme is some form of classical music but I don't know of any work that would fit. It should match the crude start of his contruction and them progress into some form of elegant theme, an artful dance. After MC is finished, he steps out of the construction chamber, the perspective changes to show that 11 other cyborgs, whatever they are, were being constructed at the same time. As the music score dramatizes the movements, they all step out, then the focus returns to MC. He turns his head to look into the camera and says "I need a weapon." Later, it is revealed that the camera recording all this construction of the cyborgs was actually one of the bad guys recording it all, a spy that had snuck in to the construction facility. The is a subtle difference to the scenes that can later be recognized as being seen through the eyes, or ocular devices, whatever, of the bad guy. It is only later that it is revealed that they special scenes were being seen by the bad guy and that you realize there were earlier scenes where he was watching. The scene changes to some military office. A company officer, I think that would be considered a Major, wants to see an Admiral. The Major appears to have just come from a battle or something, he has mud on him and his uniform isn't really presentable. He is arriving after enduring 12 hours of being trapped in an overcrowded, dark bunker with a blistering, fierce mortar barrage from the enemy outside trying to break the bunker and then he is on a transport, some kind of windowless conveyance that is also overcrowded and hot and filled with the maddening and endless quietly blaring Muzac while the civilians around him are blathering on with moronic idiotic conversations that he can't help but overhear no matter how much he wants to tune them out and there is a communication panel where he wants to send a message to his family because he can't remember the last time he talked to any of them but some moron is doing something moronic on it. He eventually barges into the Admiral's office and the scene is reminiscent in certain artistic elements to an ancient Admirality environment, that type of environment that reminds me of HMS Pinafore, although I don't think I haven't actually seen that play. The Admiral and someone else are sitting around in some kind of stuffy, formal meeting, maybe even sipping tea with their pinky fingers extended, that seems to be a waste of time to the Major. He is frustrated because he lost several men in some kind of battle earlier. The Admiral doesn't want to be lectured because, as he points out to a machine across the room that is stamping his signature on death notices for next-of-kin, he is well aware of the loss.

from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: 11/1/2006 3:14 PM

May 4, 2005, was the day I went to the Kent Police department for help. I named George W. Bush specifically as one of the people harassing me. The policeman didn’t ask me any questions. He dumped me off at the St. Francis hospital in Federal Way where the first thing they did was secretly drug my food. I found it very hard to restrain the urge to laugh shortly after I had eaten. I wanted to leave the hospital and go back to my apartment the next day, the 5th, but they talked me out of it and I stayed there until the next day, the 6th. I didn’t know which bus would take me back to the Kent Police Department and I ended up having to walk a long ways. With a single red folder in hand, I walked all the way from the intersection of I-5 and Kent-Des Moines Road, taking a left on West Meeker Street, to the Kent Police Department where my Jeep was parked.

"Glory Days"

I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
But all he kept talking about was

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Well there's a girl that lives up the block
Back in school she could turn all the boys' heads
Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by
And have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband Bobby well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times
She says when she feels like crying
She starts laughing thinking about

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Now I think I'm going down to the well tonight
And I'm going to drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory of, well time slips away
And leaves you with nothing mister but
Boring stories of

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Kerry Burgess, excerpt from my private journal: 11/13/07 3:08 AM
There seems to be something important about a dream I had a few hours earlier. I can't remember all the details to it now but it seems that I was actually thinking while I was sleeping about the dream I had earlier as I was sleeping. That makes me think I wanted to remember the dream when I woke up. Not sure how that works. Anyway, the operative detail about the dream seems to be that I was leaving a hospital where I had been a patient but I can't remember any details about being in there as a patient, which is puzzling me for reasons I can't articulate. So I was leaving and there were 2 people with me that I guess were taking me out of there. There was a doctor talking to me and perhaps another person with him. I found myself thinking about that doctor giving me a folder, apparently with information relevant to me, and that doctor refered to me as doctor, in terms of that also being my title.

"And She Was"

And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming
See the lights of a neighbor's house
Now she's starting to rise
Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes

The world was moving and she was right there with it (and she was)
The world was moving she was floating above it (and she was) and she was

And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe
Drifting this way and that
Not touching ground at all
Up above the yard

[CHORUS]

She was glad about it... no doubt about it
She isn't sure where she's gone
No time to think about what to tell them
No time to think about what she's done
And she was

And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions

[CHORUS]

Joining the world of missing persons (and she was)
Missing enough to feel alright (and she was)

"The Big Blue Marble"

There's probably not much point to this sort of note I sometimes make in blog posts. At this point, as I wrote in another draft report, it's more for me than anything else, being about as isolated as possible for a free-man in the United States of America, here at this stupid desk again day after day.

As I work along, I sometimes make blog posts that contain the content of a full report I may or may not finish and post at some point in the future.

I have several individual posts in progress currently. That happens often and I don't always finish the reports and make a blog post from it.

As I wrote in another draft report sitting on my desktop right now, these observations I'm making are intriguing but the work itself is very tedious.

This observation makes me think I discovered the reason I started this entire topic that centers on Kent. I'm thinking about that fictional plot element of those Star Trek: Discovery episodes about people touching the Time Crystal and its effects seeping out to people nearby.

This has all got to be leading *somewhere*.

Nightmare

Aired Dec 02, 1963 on ABC

Quotes

Control Voice: (opening narration) A war between worlds had long been dreaded. Throughout recent history, Man, convinced that life on other planets would be as anxious and belligerent as life on his own, has gravely predicted that some dreadful form of combat would inevitably take place between our world and that of someone else. And Man was right. To the eternal credit of the peoples of this planet Earth, history shall be able to proclaim loudly and justly that in this war between Unified Earth and the planet Ebon, Ebon struck first. Ebon: its form of life unknown, its way of life unpredictable. To the fighting troops of Earth, a black question mark at the end of a dark, foreboding journey.

I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too. I have these thoughts too that I was captured by enemy forces at some point and tortured while in captivity.

So if Prince Philip is my paternal grandfather, that means my grandfather was a naval officer as well. I have read that a few times but it just now registered. And from that article, it says he began his naval career on 5/1/39, where I have been thinking that I graduated USNA on 4/30/82, which was a Friday. The next day, 5/1/82, was a Saturday. I have largely discredited my methods for reaching that 4/30 date but I don't know why I am still attached to it.

posted by Kerry Burgess - H.V.O.M at 12:29 AM Thursday, June 14, 2007

I recognize the date Friday, 4/30/1982, as when I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. The date 5/1/1982 has come up before too in connection with my graduation. That might have been the day my grandfather pinned on my U.S. Navy Ensign bars for the first time. The commissioning of the battleship USS New Jersey also seems associated with me and my graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. The symbolism of this movie, though, might have something to do with me and Tri-Star Pictures, which formed in 1982 and I assume that is relevant to me.

Posted by Kerry Burgess - H.V.O.M at 5:10 AM Sunday, August 26, 2007

I can't remember the precise details, but I think 4/30/1982 was my final day at USNA and my family had a commission ceremony for me on 5/1/1982, before I left for the Falklands as some kind of observer, NATO perhaps, with the Royal Navy. The date 5/1/1982 shows up in the final re-commissioning of the USS New Jersey BB-62, also, which would make sense, especially considering that New Jersey was the first of those battleships to be brought back into service, even though it was the second ship of that Iowa-class of battleships. I believe that was done because I first graduated from Princeton University, which is located in New Jersey.

`Black Hawk Down' Helps Ranger Heal

Movie Tells A Story He Can't Remember

The Soldier Was Critically Hurt Early In The 1993 Somalia Battle

The Rest Of The Day Is A Blank.

January 19, 2002 By Roger Roy, Sentinel Staff Writer

In the dusty, chaotic capital of far-off Somalia, 18 U.S. soldiers died in a single day in 1993, the worst firefight American troops had fought since Vietnam and the subject of the new movie Black Hawk Down.

That disastrous day, with the television images of dead U.S. soldiers being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, was one that many military and political leaders were anxious to forget.

But for Todd Blackburn, whose pivotal role in the battle is recounted in the movie, it is a day he has struggled to remember.

"Sometimes bits and pieces of it come through, but that's about all," Blackburn said in an interview this week.

Now a Pensacola police officer, Blackburn, 27, was an Army Ranger in 1993. He was part of a team of about 100 Rangers and elite Delta Force commandos sent in to capture Somali warlords disrupting international efforts to end a famine that had killed an estimated 300,000 Somalis.

In Mogadishu, the Rangers and commandos -- many of them the same soldiers who have since fought in Afghanistan -- had run similar missions in the weeks before Oct. 3, 1993, with few casualties.

But on that day, two helicopters would be shot down, and most of the team would be pinned down overnight in Mogadishu, surrounded by thousands of heavily armed Somalis who were angry over the U.S. military presence in their city.

THINKS MOVIE IS ACCURATE

Blackburn, who was raised in a military family in Pensacola, was the first American casualty of the day. The movie, which Blackburn says is mostly accurate, portrays his injury as the first in a string of events that went wrong.

Blackburn's Ranger team was one of four that were to drop from helicopters and secure a perimeter around a building while the commandos went in to capture members of the clan headed by warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

Blackburn still remembers part of that day.

"I remember I went out for a run that morning," Blackburn said. "And I can remember getting ready for the mission."

At their base in an old hangar outside of town, the Rangers strapped on their body armor and loaded up as much extra ammunition as they could carry before boarding their helicopters.

Blackburn remembers the ride in the Black Hawk helicopter and the huge cloud of dust and debris kicked up by the rotors as it hovered over their drop site. One of the last things he remembers is how, even over the roar of the chopper, the Rangers could hear the sound of gunfire as the Somalis shot at them.

But that is where Blackburn's memories of the day end. As the Rangers began to slide down ropes to the street below, something went wrong -- the movie suggests the pilot was dodging a rocket-propelled grenade -- and Blackburn plunged 70 feet. He was unconscious, with serious head and internal injuries.

Blackburn survived only because he was quickly evacuated in a convoy of three Humvees. The vehicles came under such intense fire getting back to their base that the medic treating Blackburn held an IV bag in one hand while he fired his rifle with the other.

In the movie, Blackburn's is the first in a series of mishaps and bad luck that delayed the raid and led to a casualty toll that stunned Americans, who had seen the U.S. action in Somalia as a purely humanitarian venture.

Blackburn spent almost two years in the hospital, and when he left the Army he returned to Pensacola. He said he has nearly completely recovered, except for some recurring memory loss.

"They did a pretty good job of putting me back together," he said.

When the book Black Hawk Down became a best seller several years ago, Blackburn tried to read it. He only got part way through its detailed recounting of his friends' deaths.

"It was just too hard," he said.

But when the movie was screened several weeks ago for U.S. troops at Fort Benning, Ga., the home of the Rangers and Delta Force, Blackburn accepted an invitation.

He said the movie's portrayal of the Rangers, their sense of camaraderie and how they operated in Somalia, was accurate. The movie was filmed in Rabat, Morocco, and the Army let the moviemakers use Black Hawk helicopters and Army Rangers.

SOME SCENES WERE FICTION

But the movie also has "a little bit of Hollywood," Blackburn said.

Kerry Burgess, excerpt from my private journal: 03/24/07 3:52 AM
I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base.

There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.

Grimes: It's all in the grind, Sizemore. Can't be too fine, can't be too coarse. This, my friend, is a science. I mean you're looking at the guy that believed all the commercials. You know, about the "be all you can be." I made coffee through Desert Storm. I made coffee through Panama while everyone else got to fight, got to be a Ranger. Now it's "Grimesy, black, one sugar" or "Grimesy, got a powdered anywhere?"

Black Hawk Down -- An American War Story -- The Day U.S. Got Stung In Somalia

By Mark Bowden

The Philadelphia Inquirer

Late in the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 3, 1993, attack helicopters dropped about 120 elite American soldiers into a busy neighborhood in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia. Their mission was to abduct several top lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid and return to base. It was supposed to take about an hour.

Instead, two of their high-tech UH-60 Black Hawk attack helicopters were shot down. The men were pinned down through a long and terrible night in a hostile city, fighting for their lives. When they emerged the following morning, 18 Americans were dead and 73 were wounded. One, helicopter pilot Michael Durant, had been carried off by an angry mob. He was still alive, held captive somewhere in the city.

U.S. blasts 5 Iranian targets

Houston Chronicle News Services

MON 04/18/1988 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.

The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.

"We aim to deter further Iranian aggression - not provoke it," President Reagan said. "They must know that we will protect our ships, and if they threaten us, they'll pay a price."

Official estimates of the toll from today's fighting changed through the day, but Reagan stated without elaboration that at least five Iranian vessels of various sizes - but no U.S. ones - had been damaged.

"Following the destruction of the two Iranian military platforms, whose personnel had evacuated after our warning, several Iran naval vessels and small boats attempted to engage our ships and aircraft," Reagan said.

"Three Iranian naval vessels and at least two small boats were sunk or very severely damaged," he added.

Also today, Iran said the United States had entered the Iran-Iraq war, charging U.S. helicopters supported an Iraqi land offensive in the Faw Peninsula. The Pentagon dismissed the charge, saying no U.S. military forces have been involved with Iraqi units.

The White House said three U.S. warships ships blasted each Iranian platform. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attacks, and the Iranians fled prior to the shelling, the White House said.

Iran said a number of oil workers aboard the two platforms were killed or injured. It gave no details.

Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said a U.S. helicopter also was fired upon during the raid but was not hit.

One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.

He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.
