Chief of the Astronaut Office
The Simpsons
Simpson and Delilah [ television series episode 10/18/1990 ]
(from internet transcript)
Mr. Burns: Pathetic morons in my employ, stealing my precious money. None of these cretins deserves a promotion.
Smithers: It's in the union contract. One token promotion per year.
Mr. Burns: Wait. Who is that young go-getter?
Smithers: Looks like Homer Simpson, only more dynamic and resourceful.
Mr. Burns: Simpson? An unspoiled lump of clay to mold in my own image. Our new junior executive! Bring him to me.
Smithers: Homer Simpson, you've been promoted. You're now an executive. Take three minutes to say goodbye and report to room 503 for reassignment to a better life.

Murray seeks $1 billion for VA
By Hal Bernton
Seattle Times staff reporter
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.
Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.
The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."
Yesterday, Murray held a rally outside the Puget Sound VA Health Care System hospital in Seattle

Same Concerns, Different Angles -- Don Bonker And Patty Murray Debate The Issues In Senate Race
By Mark Matassa
OLYMPIA - While tossing off a couple of weak jokes about his tie, her shoes and even their wristwatches, Don Bonker and Patty Murray did get around to the issues.
As the first debate between the two prominent Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate, this was to be a test of substance.
Trouble was, with a couple of exceptions, the jokes offered as much help in distinguishing the candidates yesterday as the debate did.
For example, Bonker said he was in the race to address the economic well-being of the country, while Murray said she's motivated by pressures on individual and family finances.
Those differences in perspective are what Murray has continued to stress. She started a running joke months ago by relating a story about an Olympia lawmaker who said Murray would never be taken seriously because she was "just a mom in tennis shoes." With that, the tennis shoe became the symbol of her campaign and she began decrying all the male politicians wearing blue suits and red ties.

Apache Attack
On cue, ten seconds later, the helicopters unleashed a salvo of laser-guided Hellfire missiles. "This one's for you, Saddam ," muttered CW03 Dave Jones, the pilot of another Apache.
The shots, fired in the predawn hours of January 17, 1991, marked the start of Operation Desert Storm and were among the most critical of the war, blinding Iraq's early warning net at a key moment. US Central Command relied entirely on the Apaches and USAF special operations helicopters to do the job. "If something had happened and we didn't do 100 percent [destruction]," said one gunner, CW04 Lou Hall, "a lot of people were going to get hurt."
The Apaches did achieve 100 percent destruction, or close to it. Eyewitnesses report that, when the Hellfires hit the targets, the radar bases evaporated in clouds of smoke and flame. In the four and a half minutes it took to complete the task, the Apaches had, in the words of Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, "plucked out the eyes" of Iraq's Soviet-supplied air defenses.

RADAR RAVEN MAY GET CREDIT FOR 1ST AIR KILL OF THE GULF WAR
Published: Friday, Feb. 22 1991 12:00 a.m. MST
The electronics-jamming EF-111A Raven is not a combat plane. But a Raven that lured an Iraqi fighter into a death trap may be credited with the first air kill of the war.
The U.S. Air Force is investigating whether the two-man crew of the EF-111A will go down in history for destroying an Iraqi F-1 Mirage minutes after the war began on Jan. 17.Capt. Brent D. Brandon, 30, of Houston, the plane's electronic warfare officer, said the Iraqi fighter rolled in a mile or so behind the EF-111A near an airfield in western Iraq and fired a missile directly at its clear canopy.
"I actually saw the missile snaking," Brandon said Thursday.
The American jet immediately dove to within a few hundred feet of the ground and released chaff and decoy flares to try to divert the heat-seeking missile from its engines.
At the same time, the pilot, Capt. Jim Denton, accelerated toward the speed of sound and made a hard right banking turn, Brandon said.
The Iraqi fighter couldn't match the maneuver.
"And that's when we see the fireball behind us ... as the guy hit the ground," Brandon said.
Those early morning hours of Jan. 17 are etched in Brandon's memory.
excerpt from my private journal as Kerry Burgess: August 9, 2006
My hunch is that I was taken captive again by natives, where they threw me in to fight a lion. There is this memory I have been thinking about for a while. It was when i was a kid, maybe 7 years old. Mom was married to James Nevell and we lived in De Queen. He had not gone back into the Marines at that time or he had just gotten out. I think it was the former. Anyway, one day, I was rummaging through our storage shed and I found his U.S. Marines-issued saber. Or I found a machete that day. I remember both happening. Anyway, I was playing with the machete or the saber out in the yard and I was chopping away at any threatening blades of grass or tree limbs. At one point, I started to chop a tree limb that was laying on the ground in front of me. After I swung the blade over my head to strike down on the limb, mom's new puppy ran between my legs and run under the blade. I struck the little bastard square on its backbone, but remarkably, I didn't even break the skin. It ran off yelping but wasn't even bleeding. I was very scared because I thought I had just killed it, but it was all right. As I was just writing that memory, I felt a greater association to it and that Costner movie I just wrote about. When I started writing about hitting that dog, I was thinking about something with lions. As in, a lion rushed at me, I leapt into the air, did a something like a somersault, but not the backflip, rather the other....what do you call that? It wouldn't be a backflip....but something like a side-flip....I'll have to look that up. Anyway, as I flipped over the top of the lion, I either punched its backbone or I had some kind of weapon I used to break its back. I have no idea if this is memory or imagination but I think of this many times. I just wish I knew.

Presidential Yacht Sailors Reunite with Historic Ship
Story Number: NNS030420-04Release Date: 4/19/2003 7:28:00 PM
By Jack A. Green, Naval Historical Center Public Affairs
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy Museum at the historic Washington Navy Yard played host to the first crew reunion for former Presidential Yacht USS Sequoia (AG 23).
In service at the Washington Navy Yard for 45 years until sold by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, Sequoia served presidents, heads of state and dignitaries from around the world.
"The officers and Sailors who crewed the yacht from post World War II to its decommissioning assembled at the museum to swap sea stories, show multitudes of photographs, display memorabilia and generally get re-acquainted after 25 years or more," said Kim Nielsen, director of the Navy Museum.
The highlight of the reunion was an afternoon cruise aboard the still-proud Sequoia on the waters of the Potomac, provided by current owner Gary Silversmith. Former captains and crew took their places at the helm and on deck, while their families enjoyed the ships presidential quarters.
The shipmates also restated their encouragement to the USS Sequoia Foundation in its efforts to help preserve the vessel for posterity.
The Mathis Yacht Building Co., of Camden, N.J., built Sequoia to a John Trumpy design in 1925-1926 for $200,000. Trumpy was a famous yacht designer who by 1917 had designed more than 47 such vessels that set an industry standard in the United States. His clients included the DuPonts, the Guggenheims, along with the Dodge and Chrysler families to name a few.
Acquired by the U.S. government in 1931, it was commissioned March 25, 1933, as Sequoia in the U.S. Navy, to serve as the Presidential Yacht.

(from internet transcript)
Tyrell: [Tyrell explains to Roy why he can't extend his lifespan] The facts of life... to make an alteration in the evolvement of an organic life system is fatal. A coding sequence cannot be revised once it's been established.
Batty: Why not?
Tyrell: Because by the second day of incubation, any cells that have undergone reversion mutation give rise to revertant colonies, like rats leaving a sinking ship; then the ship... sinks.
Batty: What about EMS-3 recombination?
Tyrell: We've already tried it - ethyl, methane, sulfinate as an alkylating agent and potent mutagen; it created a virus so lethal the subject was dead before it even left the table.
Batty: Then a repressor protein, that would block the operating cells.
Tyrell: Wouldn't obstruct replication; but it does give rise to an error in replication, so that the newly formed DNA strand carries with it a mutation - and you've got a virus again... but this, all of this is academic. You were made as well as we could make you.
Batty: But not to last.
Tyrell: The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy. Look at you: you're the Prodigal Son; you're quite a prize!
Batty: I've done... questionable things.
Tyrell: Also extraordinary things; revel in your time.
Batty: Nothing the God of biomechanics wouldn't let you into heaven for.
