In a case with potentially enormous political implications, Clinton lawyer Robert Bennett said a trial on Paula Corbin Jones' lawsuit would be too distracting and would interfere with the president's duties.

I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good, or yellow maybe. That would be sweet!

When I was sitting there in that bar in our office in historic Bellevue, Washington, in 1999, I told her I drove around in my blue Mazda RX-7 and solved crimes. Suzanne Morgan then looked across the table at Thomas Dawkins and asked him "What did he say?" and Thomas repeated what I had said. Later that evening, from my apartment at Oakwood, I wrote an email to Suzanne and commented that all the cigarette smoke in that bar had caused my face to turn red.

I guess I know why today I was suddenly compelled to purchase a new toaster. Last year, my apartment flooded due to a fire sprinkler line that froze and burst, they tell me, and I threw away my toaster because all that crap from the apartment's above was streaming out throughout the ceiling. I used that toaster just about every day but I did not feel like replacing it all during this past year. Until today. Today I was suddenly compelled to purchase a new toaster and so I did. I wanted to pick up some other stuff but no, only the toaster. The toaster would be the only item on the electronic transaction I generated with my bank card because without the electronic transaction then it "wouldn't count" whatever that means. So just one hour before I went to see this film I bought a new toaster and I had it with me in my backpack after I sat down in the theatre to watch this film.

As compelled as I was to purchase a new toaster and to have an electronic transaction with only the toaster as an item on that transaction, I was equally compelled to go see that film as it premieres today in the theatre. There was no choice about it. I had to go see it today. I had been planning since last night to see it today. The decision to pick up the new toaster was something that I started thinking of maybe this morning. I can't remember when I started thinking of it other than it was something in the past day or day and a half. I had been awake all night and I took a short nap early in the morning and I don't remember if I started thinking about the toaster before that or after I woke up. But since I started thinking of it, this scene has played over many times in my mind since then.

I had developed serious cramps in my legs during the swim and a cramp in my lower leg [ correction: lower back ] was very painful. It was also extremely hot and I let myself get dehydrated. I could have probably taken some advil to relieve the pain in my leg, but being so dehydrated, I was worried about taking anything. I dropped out of the race and didn't really start regretting it until about 3 or days later, so that was an indication to me that I should have dropped out. If I had started regretting it right away, then I probably could have kept going on and at least finished the bike course.

So, I've have established clearly that my official United States Navy documents as Kerry Burgess indicate I began on 03/24/1990 separation leave from active duty United States Navy.
I have described the memories I still have in my conscious mind of visualizations of that final day.
My enlistment did not end officially until 05/14/1990 but I had almost 2 years vacation time saved up and I used it all at the end of my enlistment. Since I would not be returning to a US Navy base, I was separated and on leave beginning 03/24/1990. I still had an official United States Navy identification card but I was ordered to return it by postal mail after 05/14/1990.
The point here is to describe my theory that the day I can visualize leaving the now-defunct Charleston Naval Station, South Carolina, flinging my uniform hat from the overpass after I drove through the main security checkpoint of the base, was the day Friday 03/23/1990.

The Scene: Monday's benefit premiere of Paramount's "Star Trek: First Contact" at Mann's Chinese theater. A party followed at the nearby Hollywood Colonnade. Filmgoers with lives beyond the "Trek" biosphere should find the film readily accessible. One woman associated with the TV series said: "Borgs are bad; humans are good. That's all you need to know."
The Buzz: The universe will have to expand to contain the money this film will make. The opening weekend will go where no film grosses have gone before.
Who Was There: Stars Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Alice Krige and Alfre Woodard; director-star Jonathan Frakes; producer Rick Berman; Rene Auberjonois, Avery Brooks, Colm Meaney and Armin Shimerman, who acted in sundry "Star Trek" shows; plus 1,000 guests, including Ted Harbert, Roger Birnbaum, Mark Gordon, Nick Reed, Lou Pitt and studio execs Sherry Lansing, Jonathan Dolgen and Don Granger.
Fan Reaction: Zealots seemed satisfied that customary plot points were embraced--aliens invading the ship, time travel, malfunction of holodeck or other key component, emotions unleashed in roboticly unemotional person, etc. Most said it was one of the series' best. One woman from the Midwest said, "The worst was the one William Shatner directed where at the end they were all sitting around a campfire singing 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat.' "
Quoted: "If I'm explaining the film to someone with no foreknowledge of 'Star Trek,' " Stewart said, "I would say it's a film about the power of the individual to overcome the repressive many."
Best Strange Idea: One guest, who was familiar with the film's myriad product tie-ins, said, "They should have gone for the Borg Barbie."
Money Matters: Tickets were $200, and about $70,000 was raised for Amnesty International. William Schulz, the human rights organization's U.S. executive director, said, "On the most basic level, Amnesty is about making tyrants tremble, and that's what this movie is about."
Noted: Before the film rolled, the actors, director and producer--but not the screenwriters--were all introduced. One Hollywood writer's aside was, "I'm going to talk to Amnesty about representing the tortured screenwriters in this business."

WASHINGTON — For all the speed with which science was progressing, virtually no one had thought it would happen so soon. Yet there it was in huge block letters on the front page of the New York Post: The world's first human clone had been born.
The next day, The Washington Post and other newspapers across the country ran with the story about the rogue scientists who had cloned a human on an undisclosed island. A spokesman connected to the effort refused to identify the infant, citing a desire to "protect the child from harmful publicity." Legislators quickly called for a ban on human cloning. And just as immediately came warnings that such a ban might choke off medically promising research.

Indeed, when representatives of the Raelians, an extraterrestrial-worshiping religious group, announced last week that they had created the world's first human clone, their claim was itself a clone of sorts--a clone of a similar claim made a quarter-century ago, which proved to be a hoax.
It took three months in 1978 for scientists to pick apart the science behind that purported achievement, and three years before a court definitively declared the claim fraudulent.
Now, with the availability of modern DNA fingerprinting, it should take no more than a few days for scientists to determine whether the alleged clone is a genetic replica of her mother.
Evidence was in short supply in 1978 when the New York Post's headline--"BABY BORN WITHOUT A MOTHER: He's first human clone"--sent the world into a fretful tizzy. The newspaper had caught wind of a book that was about to be published titled "In His Image: The Cloning of Man." The author, David Rorvik, was a science reporter who previously had worked for The New York Times and Time magazine.
Rorvik told of an American millionaire he said hired him to set up a lab on an unnamed Pacific island. There, he wrote, after five years of effort, a team of scientists cloned the man from one of his cells, creating a healthy baby boy in a surrogate mother.
That case was unraveled not by scientists but by a court-ordered demand for evidence that led to a legal ruling in 1981 that the story was "a fraud and a hoax," said Alex Boese, author of "The Museum of Hoaxes." In theory, at least, DNA fingerprinting should bring a speedier, more scientific solution to the current mystery. All that's needed are a couple of blood or tissue samples from the mother and the newborn.
Still, researchers noted, matching samples don't by themselves constitute proof because two DNA gels with identical patterns could simply be from the same person.
So as part of the independent validation process that has been promised, experts said, it will be necessary to track the "chain of custody" of the blood or skin samples from the moment they are retrieved from the mother and newborn. .
The chemical reaction used to amplify tiny amounts of DNA in preparation for genetic testing is also prone to cross-contamination between samples. That can lead to a false reading of genetic identity in two samples that are non-identical. Multiple tests, by multiple labs, are usually required.

I AM gratified to have signed into law H.R. 1746, the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972.
By strengthening and expanding the Government's powers against discrimination in employment, this legislation is an important step toward true equality on the job front. Where promises have sometimes failed, we may now expect results.
This bill is the result of hard work and constructive debate in both branches of Congress by Members of both parties. It is an act of Congressional collaboration in the best tradition.
Under this legislation, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Justice Department will now be able to make substantial advances against employment discrimination.
The most significant aspect of this legislation is a new authority consistently advocated by this Administration since 1969--a provision arming the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with power to bring lawsuits in the Federal district courts to enforce the rights guaranteed by title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Such actions are to be expedited by the courts whenever possible.
Everyone familiar with the operation of title VII over the past 7 years has realized that the promise of that historic legislation would remain unfulfilled until some additional, broad-based enforcement machinery was created. This bill provides that enforcement capability.
Additionally, the legislation extends the protections of title VII to millions of American citizens previously excluded from its coverage. The experiences of both the Justice Department and the EEOC under title VII have demonstrated that considerable discrimination problems have existed in State and local governments, with small employers, and in some educational institutions. Individuals employed in these areas have not heretofore been protected by title VII. This bill corrects that defect.
Also created by this legislation is the Equal Employment Opportunity Coordinating Council, a new interagency group which will coordinate, monitor, and report on the Government's enforcement drive against all remaining job discrimination.
This will support our determination to take continuing care that we are making the most effective efforts to bring about equal opportunity for all in the crucial area of employment rights.
One of the basic principles of our way of life in America has always been that individuals would be free to pursue the work of their own choice, and to advance in that work, subject only to considerations of their individual qualifications, talents, and energies.
This bill, addressing specific needs in concrete and practical ways, is bound to make a real difference in the lives of great numbers of minority Americans.
