SQL

SQL, often referred to as Structured Query Language, is a database computer language designed for managing data in relational database management systems (RDBMS), and originally based upon relational algebra. Its scope includes data query and update, schema creation and modification, and data access control. SQL was one of the first languages for Edgar F. Codd's relational model in his influential 1970 paper, "A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks" and became the most widely used language for relational databases.


History

SQL was developed at IBM by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce in the early 1970s. This version, initially called SEQUEL, was designed to manipulate and retrieve data stored in IBM's original relational database product, System R.

During the 1970s, a group at IBM San Jose Research Laboratory developed the System R relational database management system. Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce of IBM subsequently created the Structured English Query Language (SEQUEL or SEQL) to manage data stored in System R. The acronym SEQUEL was later changed to SQL because "SEQUEL" was a trademark of the UK-based Hawker Siddeley aircraft company.

The first Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) was RDMS, developed at MIT in the early 1970s, soon followed by Ingres, developed in 1974 at U.C. Berkeley. Ingres implemented a query language known as QUEL, which was later supplanted in the marketplace by SQL.

In the late 1970s, Relational Software, Inc. (now Oracle Corporation) saw the potential of the concepts described by Codd, Chamberlin, and Boyce and developed their own SQL-based RDBMS with aspirations of selling it to the U.S. Navy, Central Intelligence Agency, and other U.S. government agencies. In the summer of 1979, Relational Software, Inc. introduced the first commercially available implementation of SQL, Oracle V2 (Version2) for VAX computers. Oracle V2 beat IBM's release of the System/38 RDBMS to market by a few weeks.[citation needed]

After testing SQL at customer test sites to determine the usefulness and practicality of the system, IBM began developing commercial products based on their System R prototype including System/38, SQL/DS, and DB2, which were commercially available in 1979, 1981, and 1983, respectively.


The example below demonstrates a query of multiple tables, grouping, and aggregation, by returning a list of books and the number of authors associated with each book.

Operation Red Dawn

Operation Red Dawn was a military operation conducted by the United States Armed Forces on December 13, 2003 in the small town of ad-Dawr in Iraq, near Tikrit. The operation resulted in the capture of the country's former president, Saddam Hussein, and put to rest rumours of his death. The operation, and its two main objectives, were thought to be named for the 1984 film Red Dawn. Major Brian Reed, the officer who wrote up the Op Order for the mission, and named it, said that there was no connection whatsoever with the film. But another officer, U.S. Army Capt. Geoffrey McMurray, told USA TODAY that he was the soldier who picked the name and confirmed its connection to the film.

The operation was assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division, the Raider Brigade. Six hundred soldiers participated, including cavalry, engineers, artillery, air support, and special forces, under the overall command of Colonel James Hickey of the 4th Infantry Division.

Soldiers entered two sites (codenamed Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2) outside the village of ad-Dawr but failed initially to find Saddam. A subsequent cordon and search operation found the fugitive leader hiding in a so-called "spider hole" at a small mud-walled compound. He was taken into custody at 20:30 local time. He was armed with a pistol, but offered no resistance during his capture. The soldiers also found a AK-47 rifle, US$750,000 in $100 bills, Bounty chocolate bar , and a McVitie's taxi chocolate biscuit.. Two Iraqis, believed to be Saddam's former cook Qais Namuk and his brother, were also taken into custody. Hussein was later moved to an undisclosed location as soldiers continued to search the area.


The name of the operation, Red Dawn, apparently comes from the title of a 1984 film directed by John Milius, in which a group of American teenagers band together to commit sabotage and other guerrilla attacks in their Colorado town against invading Soviet forces. The teenagers, whose leader was portrayed by a young Patrick Swayze, called themselves the "Wolverines" — the name given to the targets of the U.S. forces in ad-Dawr. Several pundits have made note of the very irony that the namesake of the operation was a movie relating the story of insurgents fighting against an occupying invading force

Today is a momentous day for the Iraqi people. The Iraqi people have now been liberated in spirit, as well as in fact. As they celebrate, we also stop to remember the many U.S. and Coalition forces who gave their lives to make this moment possible – including many brave Iraqis who served in their new security forces and who have died fighting for their country. Thanks to all of them, the Iraqi people face a future, not of terror, but of freedom. Theft

Niels Bohr

Niels Henrik David Bohr (7 October 1885 – 18 November 1962) was a Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922. Bohr mentored and collaborated with many of the top physicists of the century at his institute in Copenhagen. He was part of a team of physicists working on the Manhattan Project. Bohr married Margrethe Nørlund in 1912, and one of their sons, Aage Niels Bohr, grew up to be an important physicist who in 1975 also received the Nobel prize. Bohr has been described as one of the most influential physicists of the 20th century.


In 1916, Niels Bohr became a professor at the University of Copenhagen. With the assistance of the Danish government and the Carlsberg Foundation, he succeeded in founding the Institute of Theoretical Physics in 1921, of which he became its director. In 1922, Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics "for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms and of the radiation emanating from them." Bohr's institute served as a focal point for theoretical physicists in the 1920s and '30s, and most of the world's best known theoretical physicists of that period spent some time there.

Bohr also conceived the principle of complementarity: that items could be separately analyzed as having several contradictory properties.

Microsoft's 'Hailstorm' key part of Net strategy

REDMOND - Microsoft said it will give details Monday about new tools it has developed to make it easier to do business, communicate and receive important information via the Internet.

The products will let software developers at other companies write Web-service programs that take advantage of Microsoft features such as instant messaging, Internet-based identity certification, credit-card security and urgent message alerts, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said.

Microsoft's new tools, collectively known as "Hailstorm," are a key part of the company's strategy called .Net.

The strategy aims to keep Microsoft competitive as the Internet becomes more central to computing, and as sales of personal-computer-based programs slow.

Microsoft plan is to unleash a HailStorm

Microsoft yesterday explained how it will make money off .NET, its bet-the-company strategy to reshape the Internet, by firmly making itself chief gatekeeper.

The audacious vision left some software developers agape and prompted a rival to suggest Microsoft continues to wield monopolistic power, but Microsoft executives said they're only trying to give people more power over their computers and fulfill the Internet's promise of easily managed information.

"It really is about the dream and vision people have had all along about how computers ought to operate," said Chairman Bill Gates at a briefing for about 100 journalists and analysts in Redmond.

Under the vision, users would store personal and other information on the Internet in a way that could be shared and transferred automatically among computers, phones and other devices.

Plans call for the system to launch in 2002 as a free service, but customers may pay a monthly subscription fee for premium services, such as file storage, elaborate messaging systems and automatic calendar management. It would be similar to how broadcast TV is free, but cable has tiered fees for different levels of service.


The basic system, code-named "HailStorm," will be free, but Microsoft will charge a monthly fee

LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."

Monday, the haystack got bigger.

While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.

Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.

Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.

Six hundred soldiers participated, including cavalry, engineers, artillery, air support, and special forces, under the overall command of Colonel James Hickey of the 4th Infantry Division.

Soldiers entered two sites (codenamed Wolverine 1 and Wolverine 2) outside the village of ad-Dawr but failed initially to find Saddam. A subsequent cordon and search operation found the fugitive leader hiding in a so-called "spider hole" at a small mud-walled compound. He was taken into custody at 20:30 local time. He was armed with a pistol, but offered no resistance during his capture. The soldiers also found a AK-47 rifle, US$750,000 in $100 bills, Bounty chocolate bar , and a McVitie's taxi chocolate biscuit.. Two Iraqis, believed to be Saddam's former cook Qais Namuk and his brother, were also taken into custody. Hussein was later moved to an undisclosed location as soldiers continued to search the area.


The name of the operation, Red Dawn, apparently comes from the title of a 1984 film directed by John Milius, in which a group of American teenagers band together to commit sabotage and other guerrilla attacks in their Colorado town against invading Soviet forces. The teenagers, whose leader was portrayed by a young Patrick Swayze, called themselves the "Wolverines" — the name given to the targets of the U.S. forces in ad-Dawr. Several pundits have made note of the very irony that the namesake of the operation was a movie relating the story of insurgents fighting against an occupying invading force

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci abruptly pulled the plug on a planned Air Force press briefing on the supersecret Stealth jet fighter plane Tuesday, even though many of the details of the seven-year-old fleet of warplanes already have been published.

In what he jokingly called "a Stealth briefing," Pentagon spokesman Dan Howard refused to acknowledge the existence of the 50-aircraft fleet that has been flying at night out of a remote southern Nevada desert base since 1981.

"There are times when we decide to brief on weapons systems, and there are times when we would decide not to," Howard told reporters who had been tipped to expect photos and technical data.

Howard said the Pentagon would not provide the data "at this time" or at any time "in the foreseeable future."

In Nevada, a spokesman for Republican Sen. Chic Hecht, who is running for re-election, said the senator had planned with the Air Force to simultaneously release the unclassified data on the Stealth fighter.

But the spokesman, Doug Fuller, said "the word out of Secretary Carlucci's office this morning was that this is on indefinite hold."

Howard refused to spell out the reasons the briefing was canceled.

"I will acknowledge the fact," he told reporters, "that from time to time, individuals, offices, departments, propose briefings which are not finally OK'd."

But, he added, "I am not going to get into the internal deliberative process within this building."

The Air Force has previously released information, including an artist's sketch, of the other U.S. Stealth aircraft, the B-2 Stealth bomber due to be unveiled in November and scheduled for its first flight test a month later.

WASHINGTON - The revolutionary Stealth bomber, a "flying wing" designed to strike deep into enemy territory while avoiding radar detection, will make its first flight this fall, the Air Force announced Wednesday.

The top-secret B-2, which employs radical design and construction materials, is being built in California by the Northrop Corp. Cost is estimated at a minimum $275 million per plane.

An artist's concept released by the Air Force showed a moderately V-shaped plane which was all wing and no fuselage in the traditional sense of aircraft. Indeed, some of the details about the plane's design - for example, the placement of the engine exhaust outlets - have been deliberately masked in the artist's rendering released Wednesday, service sources said.

Air Force Secretary Edward Aldridge said the Stealth bomber would make its maiden flight this fall from Northrop's Palmdale, Calif., plant to the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.

U.S. defense officials have said they do not believe the Soviet Union possesses Stealth technology, including a structure covered with composite materials which absorb - but do not return - radar signals.

The Stealth bomber, one of the Pentagon's supersecret "black programs," has suffered major delays and charges in Congress of cost overruns.

While the B-2 would revolutionize U.S. ability to deliver nuclear and other weapons by long-range aircraft, published reports suggest it would not be the first such Stealth plane in the U.S. arsenal.

Widely published reports have said the Air Force has a Stealth fighter built by Lockheed Corp. already in service.

This month's edition of IEEE Spectrum, published by The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, says dozens of delta-shaped Stealth fighters, built by Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co. in Burbank, Calif., are being flown by pilots of the elite 4450th Tactical Group at Nevada's Nellis Air Force Base, one of the nation's most classified military reservations.

The Air Force has never acknowledged the existence of the fighter.

WASHINGTON - The Air Force announced Thursday the new Stealth bomber will be unveiled in mid-November, thereby disclosing production of the airplane is about three months behind schedule.

The long-range bomber's "rollout" at an Air Force plant in Palmdale, Calif., where it is being assembled by the Northrop Corp., had been planned for late August or early September, so the new date appears to deprive Vice President George Bush of a planned campaign stop and a prop for pointing to the Reagan administration's record on defense.

Moreover, congressional aides said the delay meant that the first flight of the bomber, which is designed to evade radar, will not take place until January or February. The Air Force, however, said it planned to make the first flight this fall.

On a related matter, Air Force officials would not say when new cost estimates, which they had earlier promised for August, would be available. That added credence to reports from Congress that the cost of the bomber will be much higher than planned, possibly giving Democrats a campaign issue.

But the Air Force made public a few more details about the Stealth bomber, officially the B-2, which has until recently been almost competely hidden from view. The "flying wing" is slightly longer, at 69 feet, than an F-15 fighter but has a wingspan close to the 185 feet of the old B-52 bomber. On the ground, the plane stands only 17 feet high, about the height of an FB-111 fighter-bomber.

The Stealth bomber is expected to join the new B-1 and the B-52s in the nation's long-range strike force, carrying both nuclear and conventional weapons.

The Air Force confirmed earlier reports that the bombers, 132 of which are to be built under current plans, would be flown by only two crewmen. The B-1 bomber, which has recently become operational, needs four, and the B-52 needs six. Initial operations have been scheduled for 1992.

LOS ANGELES - The Air Force spent about $1 billion on a major redesign of the B-2 Stealth bomber that enables it to be less visible to radar and to fly at a wide variety of altitudes, a Pentagon official said Friday.

The redesign undertaken about three years ago was a "brilliant effort" by Northrop Corp. engineers, said Gen. Larry D. Welch, Air Force chief of staff.

The B-2, known as the Stealth because it is intended to frustrate radar detection, is to have its first public display at a rollout ceremony Nov. 22 at Palmdale, Calif., where it is being assembled under tight security. Its development has taken more than a decade.

Welch said the Northrop redesign would not have been possible if the Pentagon had not acquired the controversial B-1B bomber, allowing those involved with the Stealth a margin of comfort to proceed with developing the best possible design.

"The redesign effort was a marvelous thing to be able to do because we had the time to do it," Welch said in a meeting with reporters at a national symposium of the Air Force Association.

Originally, Welch said, the Stealth bomber was designed to penetrate enemy airspace at high altitudes. The $1 billion redesign effort, funded by the Air Force, permits the plane to be strong enough to penetrate hostile airspace at low altitudes, too, where there is more air turbulence, he said.

The overhaul, which was a computer-aided design and "number crunching exercise," was accomplished before an aircraft was actually constructed.

(a) Whoever, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any foreign government, or to any faction or party or military or naval force within a foreign country, whether recognized or unrecognized by the United States, or to any representative, officer, agent, employee, subject, or citizen thereof, either directly or indirectly, any document, writing, code book, signal book, sketch, photograph, photographic negative, blueprint, plan, map, model, note, instrument, appliance, or information relating to the national defense, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life, except that the sentence of death shall not be imposed unless the jury or, if there is no jury, the court, further finds that the offense resulted in the identification by a foreign
power (as defined in section 101(a) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978) of an individual acting as an agent of the United States and consequently in the death of that individual, or directly concerned nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large-scale attack; war plans; communications intelligence or cryptographic information; or any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy.

(b) Whoever, in time of war, with intent that the same shall be communicated to the enemy, collects, records, publishes, or communicates, or attempts to elicit any information with respect to the movement, numbers, description, condition, or disposition of any of the Armed Forces, ships, aircraft, or war materials of the United States, or with respect to the plans or conduct, or supposed plans or conduct of any naval or military operations, or with respect to any works or measures undertaken for or connected with, or intended for the fortification or defense of any place, or any other information relating to the public defense, which might be useful to the enemy, shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for any term of years or for life.
