STS-75 was a United States Space Shuttle mission, the 19th mission of the Columbia orbiter.
The primary objective of STS-75 was to carry the Tethered Satellite System Reflight (TSS-1R) into orbit and to deploy it spaceward on a conducting tether. The mission also flew the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-3) designed to investigate materials science and condensed matter physics.
The TSS-1R mission was a reflight of TSS-1 which was flown onboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-46 in July/August 1992. The Tether Satellite System circled the Earth at an altitude of 296 kilometers, placing the tether system within the rarefied electrically charged layer of the atmosphere known as the ionosphere.
STS-75 mission scientist hoped to deploy the tether to a distance of 20.7 km (12.9 mi). Over 19 kilometers of the tether were deployed before the tether broke. It remained in orbit for a number of weeks and was easily visible from the ground, appearing something like a small but surprisingly bright fluorescent light traveling through the sky.

The satellite, which was nearing the end of its planned 12.8 mile distance, immediately began accelerating away from Columbia at a rapid rate as a result of normal orbital forces. TSS is separating from Columbia at a rate of 420 miles each 90 minute orbit.

I just woke up from a dream where I seemed to be soldier and I was being transported by helicopter to a battle. That battle seemed to be the opening invasion. And I was not in the helicopter but underneath the helicopter and attached to a rope not unlike cargo being transported by the helicopter. I cannot visualize all the other soldiers that were being transported with me but I am left with the sense that we were a small group. Off the top of my head, I would say we were less than 20 in number. I can vaguely visualize a cliff that was in the area we took off from but the clearest detail is when I was in the air and suspended from the rope and we seem to have traveled a short distance from that cliff and were over the surf of an ocean beach and then we seemed to be turning inland. Something happened though at some point and my rope broke and then I was on the ground. I knew the basis direction we were traveling and I started walking in that direction. At some point in the dream though, I think I got turned around and lost my direction and I was not certain where I was going. There is also something about a river that lingers in my mind as I write all this but I am not certain where that fits in as I think it have it out of sequence. As I was traveling along on foot, I can visualize that I seemed to have the equipment, such as the rifle, of a World War 2 soldier from the United States. At some point, I reached an urban area and I can visualize myself crouched in the median of a highway as I was watching traffic pass by. I did not seem to be concealed though. I saw some of the military of the country I was in and I was trying to communicate with them. The details are confusing about whether I eventually got transport from them to the location I was supposed to be for the invasion, that I guess was some other country. Then the setting changed.
I seemed to be at some kind of large shopping mall and I am thinking that mall was in the distance as I was in that median of the highway and I am not certain why the setting seemed to change. At some point though, the setting difintely changed and I seemed to be walking around in the Pentagon. Something was wrong though and the building had no electricity. There was a lot of people around and something seemed familiar about it all as I walked around through various rooms and buildings where other people remained congregated. I guess the reason for all the people as they were in the dream is that the power had just shut off and they were going about their business as best as possible while waiting for it to return. I am left with the vague that the power was not going to return but I am not certain if I knew that during the dream. Then I was walking around again and I can visualize hallways and walls and doors and then something about a water faucet that I left running and that was streaming down the middle of a passageway. At some point, I turned around and walked back to that water faucet to turn it off and I noticed along the way that the water had evaporated for the most part and I was wondering if the stream had changed direction but when I got back to the faucet, I saw that it had been turned off. I pondered in the dream that someone had happened along to see the running faucet and turned it off or that someone that was following me had turned it off. I started walking again and I seemed to be trying to find the stairs because I wanted to go up to the fifth floor and I seemed to be on the lowest level. There was some specific reason I wanted up there and it had something to do with finding an office that had window-walls so I could look outside. I vaguely sense I wanted to watch something but I don't know what it was.
At some other point, possibly in that same building that seemed to be the Pentagon, because I vaguely recall walking down a passageway that reminds me of that earlier dream, I seemed to be going to give a speech and I think that speech was televised. A notable difference of this part is that I seemed to be doing all that in the capacity I exist in today. I am vaguely aware during the dream of being there as the homeless person I am today and there is more than I can describe. One other puzzling detail is that I seemed to be in a group of Presidential candidates and that is what the speech was about as we were all lined up behind some kind of table or bar type of structure. I came to the conclusion that we were Presidential candidates because Bill Clinton was there in my group and he was giving a speech. I pondered during the dream that I was only there because I needed that forum to get out a specific message and that was the best way. I noted that I had two pieces of paper and I arranged those in front of me so that the camera would record that message on the paper as I was speaking. The only detail I remember is that the basic message seemed to impart the same message from the movie about saving the Clock Tower. I also recall that Tom Huston from the USS Wainwright CG 28 was standing there too as a Presidential candidate and we were talking about having to travel back to where ever we had been. It seems that the meeting would not be over until after midnight, which seemed at least 2 hours away, and neither of us were looking forward to having to walk back through a neighborhood we had to go through to get back to where ever we were going back to. Tom Huston might have changed into a different person some time after that first time I saw him as we were about to give the speeches but I don't recall who he might have become during the dream although I remember I was talking to him later after I seemed to have found my car and I asked him if he wanted a ride back to his home. I seemed to be driving that burgundy Plymouth Voyager I "remember" owning. I found it sitting in the partking lot outside some kind of hardware store that might have been Lowes. I am not certain about the details associated with finding that car and all I can remember now is a very vague sense of satisfaction from finding it, I guess because I was glad to have a car again, and then of driving in the parking lot and asking Tom if he needed a lift although I don't recall any other details about him after that. There was something about a lot of stuff in the passenger seat though and I think I had bought some water hoses as I was in the hardware store and I had 3 sets of a long water hose. Then I was in a house and I walked upstairs and I opened the door that seemed to be of my sisters room and I stood there and told her about what I had bought and it was something else I had bought that I wanted her to know about about it was something for recreation and I don't know remember what it was. I think that was the end of the dream. Just as I was writing that last sentence, I thought to myself that I actually had another series of dreams just before I woke up and that what ever I was dreaming about had startled me awake but I cannot now remeber what I had been dreaming.

The tether on the Italian Tethered Satellite broke about 7:30 p.m. CST Sunday as the satellite was nearing the full extent of its deployment from the Shuttle. The satellite, which was nearing the end of its planned 12.8 mile distance, immediately began accelerating away from Columbia at a rapid rate as a result of normal orbital forces. TSS is separating from Columbia at a rate of 420 miles each 90 minute orbit.
The tether apparently snapped near the top of the 39-foot TSS boom in Columbia's cargo bay.

1/21/2004 - LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFPN) -- Pilot error caused a U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 aircraft to crash shortly after takeoff at an airshow Sept. 14 at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. The pilot ejected just before the aircraft hit the ground.
According to the accident investigation board report released Jan. 21, the pilot misinterpreted the altitude required to complete the "Split S" maneuver. He made his calculation with an incorrect airfield altitude. The pilot incorrectly climbed to 1,670 feet above ground level instead of 2,500 feet before initiating the pull down to the Split S maneuver.
When he realized something was wrong, the pilot used maximum back stick pressure and rolled slightly left to ensure the aircraft would hit away from the crowd should he have to eject. He ejected when the aircraft was 140 feet above ground -- just eight-tenths of a second before impact. He sustained only minor injuries from the ejection. The aircraft, valued at about $20.4 million, was destroyed. There was no other damage to military or civilian property.
Also, the board determined other factors substantially contributed to creating the opportunity for the error including the requirement for demonstration pilots to convert mean sea level and above ground level altitudes, and performing a maneuver with a limited margin of error. 1/21/2004 - LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFPN) -- Pilot error caused a U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 aircraft to crash shortly after takeoff at an airshow Sept. 14 at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. The pilot ejected just before the aircraft hit the ground.
According to the accident investigation board report released Jan. 21, the pilot misinterpreted the altitude required to complete the "Split S" maneuver. He made his calculation with an incorrect airfield altitude. The pilot incorrectly climbed to 1,670 feet above ground level instead of 2,500 feet before initiating the pull down to the Split S maneuver.
When he realized something was wrong, the pilot used maximum back stick pressure and rolled slightly left to ensure the aircraft would hit away from the crowd should he have to eject. He ejected when the aircraft was 140 feet above ground -- just eight-tenths of a second before impact. He sustained only minor injuries from the ejection. The aircraft, valued at about $20.4 million, was destroyed. There was no other damage to military or civilian property.
Also, the board determined other factors substantially contributed to creating the opportunity for the error including the requirement for demonstration pilots to convert mean sea level and above ground level altitudes, and performing a maneuver with a limited margin of error. No, looking at the calendar, it was more likely 1/21 when I put in my notice. The 23rd was a Friday and was exactly two weeks before my departure date of Feb. 6th and I remember that my notice was slightly more than two weeks. I have also been thinking it was a Wednesday when I told them I was leaving.

Univac was the primary product of the Eckert-Mauchly computer company. Not only was it faster, but it demonstrated the shift from base-ten to binary code. A Univac was used by CBS news to predict the outcome of the 1952 Presidential Election. That event brought computing into the public eye, according to many historians. It wouldn't be long before scientific focus shifted to microprocessors.
[Not only was it binary machine language, but to manually program it, you had to start with base-10, convert that mentally to base-8, and then mentally convert that to base-2, or binary.]

[The way I see it, this was the modern equivalent of man inventing fire. Today's PC are a much improved version of that invention, in essence, a match or a butane ligther. Software is the fuel for that energy source. I don't think we have reached a point yet where you could compare the computer to the combustion engine.
