He wasn't just lucky.

What do you think, darlin',
should I hate him?

Chief of 777 Jetliner Effort Named President of Boeing
September 01, 1992
From Associated Press
SEATTLE — Boeing Co. on Monday named the veteran engineer who headed its 777 jetliner program as president of the company, filling a job that has been vacant since 1988.
"No commitments; I plan to be around for quite a few years, so I don't think it's timely to talk about that final change," he said.
Reporting to Condit will be Boeing's three product organizations: Commercial Airplanes, Defense & Space group, and Boeing Computer Services.

The Engineer As President
By Polly Lane
Phil Condit, an engineer who spearheaded development of Boeing's newest commercial jetliner by insisting that customers play a major role in its design, says he will bring the same philosophy to the Boeing corporate presidency.
Condit, who has been with Boeing for 21 years, was elected president and a member of the company's board of directors yesterday.
One of Condit's first assignments as president, according to Shrontz, will be to get better acquainted with Boeing's defense and space business. That division has suffered in the past year as many programs were canceled or cut. The company has gotten the division back into the black and is looking for ways to expand its work.
"We can play a bigger role in the military market," he said.
