CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The Atlantis astronauts successfully started Galileo on its long journey toward Jupiter late Wednesday
Atlantis soared from its Kennedy Space Center launch pad at 12:53 p.m. (11:53 a.m. Houston time), just three minutes into a 29-minute launch window.
"It was just a good-looking launch," said NASA Deputy Administrator J.R. Thompson.
Aboard Atlantis are mission commander Don Williams, pilot Mike McCulley and mission specialists Franklin Chang-Diaz, Shannon Lucid and Ellen Baker.
After slipping into a 180-mile-high orbit, the shuttle fliers began a series of steps leading to Galileo's much-anticipated debut.
At 7:15 p.m., Galileo and the powerful two-stage rocket booster that was to propel it out of the Earth's gravitational grasp drifted from the payload bay as the shuttle sailed over the west coast of California.
"Galileo is now on its way to another world," Williams said, confirming the deployment.
Firing Atlantis' steering engines, Williams maneuvered his ship a safe distance from the rocket blast that soon would emerge from Galileo's stubby booster.
On schedule an hour later, the booster's first stage fired for 2 1/2 minutes before falling away.
"That sounds like good news," radioed Lucid, who supervised the Galileo rocket operation for the crew, when informed of the successful burn.
Within a few moments, the booster's second stage began a 105-second burn, then Galileo separated from the rocket and broke free of the Earth's bonds, falling toward the sun.
As Galileo sped away, its power booms, scientific instruments and communications antenna unfurled, giving it a buglike appearance.
All the craft's systems appeared to be operating normally, said NASA's Galileo project manager, Richard Spehalski.
The spacecraft's complicated trajectory through the solar system will sling it around Venus in early February. Then, Galileo will swing twice around the Earth - in December 1990 and again in December 1992 - before it veers toward a December 1995 rendezvous with Jupiter.
Each of those planetary "flybys" is intended to give Galileo the momentum required to reach Jupiter, because a launcher with the thrust for a straight shot was not available.

WASHINGTON - Conceding there may be a tough fight ahead, President Bush said Monday he is still confident that Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas will become the second black to serve on the nation's highest court.
The president's comments came as a number of senators signaled their intention to query the conservative jurist specifically about his views on abortion and equal opportunity laws when confirmation hearings begin today before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
"There's a fight on and I'm confident we're going to win it," Bush said

On September 25, 1960, the first turbine at the world's largest geothermal power plant started spinning. Using the steam created by hot rocks deep beneath California, The Geysers power plant has been pumping out 6 million megawatt-hours of power a year ever since—and it remains the world's largest such geothermal power plant 50 years later.
But The Geysers remains the world's largest such power plant for two simple reasons: cost and risk. Drilling a well to the depths required is expensive, time-consuming and there is no guarantee of success. Perhaps the best way to expand geothermal is to pair it with another industry that likes to poke holes deep beneath the Earth: oil and gas.

Mine collapse traps 34 copper workers in Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile —
Rescuers scrambled Friday to dig out 34 copper mine workers trapped nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) below ground after a tunnel caved in.
Authorities were hopeful the miners managed to reach an underground shelter that contains oxygen, food and other supplies after the collapse Thursday afternoon at the San Jose mine in northern Chile.
A day later, however, attempts to contact them through chimneys and vents have been unsuccessful.
Labor Minister Camila Merino said the shelter has enough oxygen to last the workers two more days - though other miners said there was only enough for another 24 hours.
Rescuers were able to descend only about 200 feet (64 meters) into the mine, and were forced to pause the rescue effort for hours while they waited for heavy digging and other special equipment to be brought in.

Hope faded Thursday of finding 11 missing offshore workers alive as the sun set on a second day of searching and the massive drilling rig that exploded into flames late Tuesday night sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
With the fire doused and the rig submerged, the Coast Guard launched a sweeping effort to clean up petroleum spewed into the water and seal off a well at the sea floor that may have still been leaking oil.
As it did, investigations began and questions continued to swirl about the cause of the accident at the Deepwater Horizon, a half-billion-dollar rig owned and operated by Swiss-based Transocean that was under lease to BP.

1980: North Sea platform collapses
At least 120 oil rig workers are feared dead after a North Sea accommodation platform collapsed during gales.
Reports say a massive wave hit one of the legs of the platform, causing it to break and send the 208 people on board into the sea at around 1830 GMT.
Some were able to make it to the lifeboats before the platform fully capsized while others were thrown into the sea as the rig began to tilt.
Most of those missing from the Alexander Kielland platform, which was situated 235 miles east of Dundee, are Norwegian.

Alexander L. Kielland was a Norwegian semi-submersible drilling rig that capsized whilst working in the Ekofisk oil field in March 1980 killing 123 people.
The capsize was the worst disaster in Norwegian waters since World War II. The rig, located approximately 320 km east from Dundee, Scotland, was owned by the Stavanger Drilling Company of Norway and was on hire to the U.S. company Phillips Petroleum at the time of the disaster. The rig was named after the Norwegian writer Alexander Lange Kielland.
In driving rain and mist, early in the evening of 27 March 1980 more than 200 men were off duty in the accommodation on Alexander L. Kielland. The wind was gusting to 40 knots with waves up to 12m high. The rig had just been winched away from the Edda production platform.
Minutes before 18:30 those on board felt a 'sharp crack' followed by 'some kind of trembling'. Suddenly the rig heeled over 30° and then stabilised. Five of the six anchor cables had broken, the one remaining cable preventing the rig from capsizing. The list continued to increase and at 18.53 the remaining anchor cable snapped and the rig turned upside down.
