Memorable quotes for

Top Gun (1986)

Viper: I flew with your old man. VF-51, the Oriskany. You're a lot like he was. Only better... and worse. He was a natural heroic son of a bitch that one.

Maverick: So he did do it right.

Viper: Yeah, he did it right... Is that why you fly the way you do? Trying to prove something? Yeah, your old man did it right. What I'm about to tell you is classified. It could end my career. We were in the worst dogfight I ever dreamed of. There were bogeys like fireflies all over the sky. His F-4 was hit, and he was wounded, but he could've made it back. He stayed in it, saved three planes before he bought it.

Maverick: How come I never heard that before?

Viper: Well, that's not something the State Department tells dependents when the battle occurred over the wrong line on some map.

Maverick: So you were there?

Viper: I was there. What's on your mind?

Maverick: My options, sir.

Viper: Simple. First you've acquired enough points to show up tomorrow and graduate with your Top Gun class, or you can quit. There'd be no disgrace. That spin was hell, it would've shook me up.

Maverick: So you think I should quit?

Viper: I didn't say that. The simple fact is you feel responsible for Goose and you have a confidence problem. Now I'm not gonna sit here and blow sunshine up your ass, Lieutenant. A good pilot is compelled to evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned. Up there, we gotta push it. That's our job. It's your option, Lieutenant. All yours.

Memorable quotes for

Flight of the Intruder (1991)

Court-Martial Captain: You took an oath, Mr. Cole. You, too, Mr. Grafton. You took an oath to defend the constitution and obey the orders of the officers appointed over you. It's the same oath that every officer in the navy has taken for damn near 200 years. And during all that time, the military has obeyed the civilian elected government. Now, they might not have always been right, or wise... or even smart, but they were elected. Any other way and the United States would be nothing more than another two-bit military dictatorship.

[ US Navy Court-Martial Admiral: ] Why did you do this, Cole? An officer with your fine record? Did you think you were going to win the war?

1991 film "Flight of the Intruder" DVD video:

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: I know a lot about you.

US Navy Lieutenant Commander Virgil 'Tiger' Cole - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder bombardier navigator: Well, I'm glad, sir, because I know a lot about you, too. Everybody in the Navy knows about you, sir.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Yeah? What about me?

US Navy Lieutenant Commander Virgil 'Tiger' Cole - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder bombardier navigator: That you're a legend, sir.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Then that makes two of us. And sometimes that can be a bad influence on others.

US Navy Lieutenant Commander Virgil 'Tiger' Cole - USS Independence CV 62 US Navy A-6 Intruder bombardier navigator: I'll try and fit in, sir. That's my job.

US Navy Commander Frank "Dooke" Camparelli - USS Independence CV 62 air squadron commander: Make sure you do that. Good evening, Mr. Cole.

Remarks Following a Meeting With the National Security Team

October 12, 2000

Situation in the Middle East/U.S.S. Cole

The President. I have just been meeting with my national security team on today's tragic events in the Middle East, and I would like to make a brief statement.

First, as you know, an explosion claimed the lives of at least four sailors on one of our naval vessels, the U.S.S. Cole, this morning. Many were injured; a number are still missing. They were simply doing their duty.
