BIEBEN, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

"You're pretty exposed here," the captain observed, crouching just behind the turret.

"True enough," Sergeant Mackall agreed. His M-1 Abrams tank was dug into the reverse slope of a hill, its gun barely clear of the ground behind a row of shrubs. Mackall looked down a shallow valley to a treeline fifteen hundred meters away. The Russians were in there, surveying the ridges with powerful field glasses, and he hoped that they could not make out the squat, ominous profile of the main battle tank. He was in one of the three prepared firing positions, a sloped hole in the ground dug by the engineers' bulldozers, helped over the last few days by local German farmers who had taken to the task with a will. The bad news was that the next line of such positions required traversing five hundred meters of open fields. They'd been planted with something a bare six weeks before. Those crops would never amount to much, the sergeant knew.

"Ivan must love this weather," Mackall observed. There was an overcast at about thirteen hundred feet. Whatever air support he could expect would have a bare five seconds to acquire and engage their targets before having to break clear of the battlefield. "What can you give us, sir?"

"I can call four A-10s, maybe some German birds," the Air Force captain replied. He surveyed the terrain himself from a slightly different perspective. What was the best way to get the ground-attack fighters in and out? The first Russian attack on this position had been repulsed, but he could see the remains of two NATO aircraft that had died in the effort. "There should be three choppers, too."

That surprised Mackall - and worried him. Just what sort of attack were they expecting here?

"Okay." The captain stood and turned back to his armored command vehicle. "When you hear 'Zulu, Zulu, Zulu,' that means the air is less than five minutes out. If you see any SAM vehicles or antiair guns, for Christ's sake take them out. The Warthogs have been hit real hard, Sarge."

"You got it, Cap'n. You better get your ass outa here, it's gonna be showtime soon." One thing Mackall had learned was just how important a good forward air-control officer was, and this one had dug the sergeant's troop out of a really bad scrape three days before.

Courts-martial in the United States

Courts-martial in the United States are criminal trials conducted by the Military of the United States. Most commonly, courts-martial are convened to try members of the U.S. military for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which is the U.S. military's criminal code. However, they can also be convened for other purposes, including military tribunals and the enforcement of martial law in an occupied territory. Courts-martial are governed by the rules of procedure and evidence laid out in the Manual for Courts-Martial and Military Rules of Evidence, respectively.

a military judge determines questions of law, and the members of the panel (or military judge in a judge-alone case) determine questions of fact.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_of_the_Armies

General of the Armies

General of the Armies and General of the Armies of the United States are the highest possible ranks in the United States Army.

After World War II, which saw the introduction of U.S. "5-star" officers who outranked Washington, both Congress and the President revisited the issue of Washington's rank. To maintain George Washington's proper position as the first Commanding General of the United States Army, he was appointed, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 January 19, 1976, approved by President Gerald R. Ford on October 11, 1976. The law established the grade as having "rank and precedence over all other grades of the Army, past or present,"clearly making it superior to General of the Army. The Department of the Army Order 31-3, issued on March 13, 1978 had an effective appointment date of July 4, 1976. The rank ensures that no United States military officer outranks George Washington

Fleet Admiral (United States)

Fleet Admiral of the United States Navy (FADM), or more commonly referred to as Fleet Admiral, is a five-star flag officer rank and is presently considered the highest possible rank in the United States Navy.

The insignia for Fleet Admiral comprises five stars in a pentagon design with a thick rank stripe, below four smaller stripes, on the service dress blue uniform.

The Fleet Admiral rank is reserved for war-time use only

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marshals_Service

United States Marshals Service

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a United States federal law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice (see 28 U.S.C. § 561). Although the Marshals Service itself dates only to 1969, the office of U.S. Marshal is the oldest federal law enforcement office in the United States.

The USMS is the enforcement arm of the United States federal courts. U.S. Marshals protect court officers and buildings and ensure the effective operation of the judicial system. The US Marshals Service assists with court security and prisoner transport, serves arrest warrants and seeks fugitives.

Regional Organization

The U.S. court system is divided into 94 Districts, each with a U.S. Marshal, a Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-15) (and an Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (GS-14) in certain larger districts), Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-13), and as many Deputy U.S. Marshals (GS-5 and above) and Special Deputy U.S. Marshals as needed.

The US Marshal of a US Circuit Court is the US Marshal in whose district that court is located.

The Director and each United States Marshal is appointed by the President of the United States and subject to confirmation by the United States Senate. The District U.S. Marshal is traditionally appointed from a list of qualified law enforcement personnel for that district or state. Each state has at least one district, while several larger states have three or more.

Description

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter was the first of a two-spacecraft orbiter-probe combination designed to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the atmosphere of Venus. The spacecraft was a solar-powered cylinder about 250 cm in diameter with its spin axis spin-stabilized perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. A high-gain antenna was mechanically despun to remain focused on the earth. The instruments were mounted on a shelf within the spacecraft except for a magnetometer mounted at the end of a boom to ensure against magnetic interference from the spacecraft. Pioneer Venus Orbiter measured the detailed structure of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Venus, investigated the interaction of the solar wind with the ionosphere and the magnetic field in the vicinity of Venus, determined the characteristics of the atmosphere and surface of Venus on a planetary scale, determined the planet's gravitational field harmonics from perturbations of the spacecraft orbit,
and detected gamma-ray bursts. UV observations of comets have also been made. From Venus orbit insertion on December 4, 1978 to July 1980 periapsis was held between 142 and 253 km to facilitate radar and ionospheric measurements. Thereafter, the periapsis was allowed to rise (to 2290 km at maximum) and then fall, to conserve fuel. In 1991 the Radar Mapper was reactivated to investigate previously inaccessible southern portions of the planet. In May 1992 Pioneer Venus began the final phase of its mission, in which the periapsis was held between 150 and 250 km until the fuel ran out and atmospheric entry destroyed the spacecraft the following August. The orbiter cost $125 million to build and operate for the first 10 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus

Venus

Venus is the second-closest planet to the Sun

Venus has the densest atmosphere of all the terrestrial planets

The atmospheric pressure at the planet's surface is 92 times that of the Earth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Venus

Atmosphere of Venus

The atmosphere of Venus is in state of a vigorous circulation and super-rotation. The whole atmosphere circles the planet in just four Earth days, much faster than Venus' sideral day of 243 days. The winds supporting super-rotation blow as fast as 100 m/s.

The atmosphere is divided into a number of sections depending on altitude. The densest part of the atmosphere, the troposphere, begins at the surface and extends upwards to 65 km. At the furnace-like surface the winds are slow, but at the top of the troposphere the temperature and pressure reaches Earth-like levels and clouds pick up speed to 100 m/s.

The atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is about 92 times that of the Earth, similar to the pressure found 910 metres below the surface of the ocean. The atmosphere has a mass of 4.8×1020 kg, about 93 times the mass of the Earth's total atmosphere. The pressure found on Venus's surface is high enough that the carbon dioxide is technically no longer a gas, but a supercritical fluid. The density of the air at the surface is 67 kg/m3, which is 6.5% that of liquid water on Earth.

The large amount of CO2 in the atmosphere together with water vapor and sulfur dioxide create a strong greenhouse effect, trapping solar energy and raising the surface temperature to around 740 K (467°C), hotter than any other planet in the solar system, even that of Mercury despite being located further out from the Sun and receiving only 25% of the solar energy Mercury does. The average temperature on the surface is above the melting points of lead 600 K (327°C), tin 505 K (232°C), and zinc 693 K (420°C). The thick troposphere also makes the difference in temperature between the day and night side small, even though the slow retrograde rotation of the planet causes a single solar day to last 116.5 days on Earth. The surface of Venus spends 58.3 days of darkness before the sun rises again behind the clouds.

Raymond LOEWY

About : Biography

A New York Times Book Review critic once commented, "Mr. Loewy has indeed changed the shape of the modern world." However, after the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) solicited his skills, he was able to extend his range of influence even farther.

From 1967 to 1973 Loewy was retained by NASA as a habitability consultant for the Saturn-Apollo and Skylab projects. They needed him "to help insure the psycho-physiology safety and comfort of the astronauts" under the "exotic conditions of zero-gravity." His innovations, including simulating conditions of gravity and a porthole for vision contact with earth, made it possible for three men to inhabit a space capsule for 90 days. George Mueller, NASA's deputy administrator for manned space flight, wrote in a letter of appreciation: "I do not believe that it would have been possible for the Skylab crews to have lived in relative comfort, excellent spirits and outstanding efficiency had it not been for your creative design, based on a deep understanding of human needs."

In Mueller's estimation, Loewy's efforts had "provided the foundation for man's next great step - an expedition to the planets." Loewy agreed, later citing the work he did for NASA as his most important and gratifying assignment.

A legacy rivaled by few

In 1975 the Smithsonian Institution opened The Designs of Raymond Loewy, a four-month exhibit dedicated to "the man who changed the face of industrial design." Loewy later commented, "While working closely with the Smithsonian, I was provided with the opportunity to reassess the past." And what a past it was. Loewy - businessman, educator, illustrator and author - had undoubtedly established himself as one of history's most famous and influential designers.

Loewy and Viola moved to France several years later, where they enjoyed leisurely travel and a more relaxed lifestyle. On July 14, 1986, after a period of poor health, Raymond Loewy died in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Aaron Doral - Colonial Public Relations: As I was saying, form follows function. Nowhere is this axiom of design more readily apparent than onboard the world-famous Battlestar Galactica. This ship, the last of her kind still in service, was constructed over fifty years ago during the early days of the Cylon War.

Aaron Doral - Colonial Public Relations: You'll see things here that look odd or even antiquated - Hello. Antiquated to modern eyes. Phones with cords, awkward manual valves, computers that barely deserve the name. It was all designed to operate against an enemy who could infiltrate and disrupt even the most basic computer systems. Galactica is a reminder of a time when we were so frightened by our enemies that we literally looked backward for protection.

THE LIBBY TRIAL / Cheney awaits Libby trial fallout / Though he never appeared in court, vice president still hurt by testimony

SHERYL GAY STOLBERG New York Times

Wed 03/07/2007

Houston Chronicle

WASHINGTON - In legal terms, the jury has spoken in the Libby case. In political terms, Vice President Dick Cheney is still awaiting a judgment.

For weeks, Washington watched, transfixed, as the trial of Lewis "Scooter" Libby cast Cheney, his former boss, in the role of puppeteer, pulling the strings in a covert public relations campaign to defend the administration's case for war in Iraq and discredit a critic.

"There is a cloud over the vice president," prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald told the jury in summation last month.

Cheney was not charged in the case, cooperated with the investigation and expressed a willingness to testify if called, though he never was. Yet he was a central figure throughout, aggressively fighting back against suggestions that he and President Bush had taken the country to war on the basis of flawed intelligence, showing himself to be keenly sensitive to how he was portrayed in the press and backing Libby to the end.

`Death by 1,000 cuts'

With Tuesday's verdict on Libby - guilty on four of five counts, including perjury and obstruction of justice - Cheney's critics, and even some of his supporters, said the vice president had been diminished.

"The trial has been death by 1,000 cuts for Cheney," said Scott Reed, a Republican strategist. "It's hurt him inside the administration, it's hurt him with the Congress and it's hurt his stature around the world because it has shown a lot of the inner workings of the White House. It peeled the bark right off the way they operate."

The legal question in the case was whether Libby lied to investigators and prosecutors looking into the leak of the name of a CIA operative, Valerie Wilson, whose husband, the former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times accusing the White House of distorting pre-war intelligence. Cheney scrawled notes on a copy of the article, asking "did his wife send him on a junket?"

Now, Cheney faces a civil suit from Joseph Wilson.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show_trial

Show trial

The term show trial is a pejorative description of a type of highly public trial. The term was first recorded in the 1930s. There is a strong connotation that the judicial authorities have already determined the guilt of the defendant and that the actual trial has as its only goal to present the accusation and the verdict to the public as an impressive example and as a warning. Show trials tend to be retributive rather than correctional justice.

Such trials can exhibit scant regard for the niceties of jurisprudence and even for the letter of the law. Defendants have little real opportunity to justify themselves: they have often signed statements under duress and/or suffered torture prior to appearing in the court-room.

Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc show trials

Moscow Trials

Show trials were a significant part of Joseph Stalin's regime. The Moscow Trials of the Great Purge period in the Soviet Union are characteristic.

The authorities staged the actual trials meticulously. If defendants refused to "cooperate", i.e., to admit guilt for their alleged and mostly fabricated crimes, they did not go on public trial, but suffered execution nonetheless. This happened, for example during the prosecution of the so-called "Labour Peasant Party", a party invented by NKVD, which, in particular, assigned the notable economist Alexander Chayanov to it.

The first solid public evidence of what really happened during the Moscow Trials came to the West through the Dewey Commission. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, more information became available. This discredited Walter Duranty, who claimed that these trials were actually fair.

Eastern Bloc party show trials

Following some dissent within ruling communist parties throughout the Eastern Bloc, especially after the 1948 Tito-Stalin split, several party purges occurred, with several hundred thousand members purged in several countries. In addition to rank-and-file member purges, prominent communists were purged, with some subjected to public show trials. These were more likely to be instigated, and sometimes orchestrated, by the Kremlin or even Stalin himself, as he had done in the earlier Moscow Trials.

Mine collapse traps 34 copper workers in Chile

The Associated Press

SANTIAGO, Chile —

Rescuers scrambled Friday to dig out 34 copper mine workers trapped nearly 1,000 feet (300 meters) below ground after a tunnel caved in.

Authorities were hopeful the miners managed to reach an underground shelter that contains oxygen, food and other supplies after the collapse Thursday afternoon at the San Jose mine in northern Chile.

A day later, however, attempts to contact them through chimneys and vents have been unsuccessful.

Labor Minister Camila Merino said the shelter has enough oxygen to last the workers two more days - though other miners said there was only enough for another 24 hours.

Rescuers were able to descend only about 200 feet (64 meters) into the mine, and were forced to pause the rescue effort for hours while they waited for heavy digging and other special equipment to be brought in.

Pegasus - War Room and Cain's Office

The scene alternates between two conversations. Cain and Fisk; and Starbuck and Adama

Cain: Jack, I want to transfer a detachment of marines to Galactica. And I want you to handpick them. Completely reliable. Completely loyal. Razors.

Adama: I have a mission for you, Kara.

Starbuck: Anything for you, you know that.

Adama: Don't accept too quickly. You won't like this one. I don't like it. But I've decided that it has to be done.

Cain: I'm transferring you to Galactica, as well. I'll tell Adama that you're there to be my eyes and ears. He'll hate it. He'll think you're my spy and try to freeze you out of decision-making. But he'll accept it. Now I want you to stay in throughout the attack. Stay with Adama.

Adama: After the attack is completed and you've accounted for your pilots I want you to land your bird on the Pegasus to report directly to CIC. You'll take Lee with you. He'll watch your back.

Cain: Position marines in key positions throughout the ship and keep a squad posted just outside CIC.

Adama: There'll the normal chaos emotional high after the attack.

Cain: They'll be slapping each other on the back, celebrating the victory.

Adama: They'll keep their guard down.

Cain: Security will be lax.

Adama: I will ask for you over the wireless.

Cain: I will call you directly, and when I have you on the line and you hear me give the command, "execute case orange"

Adama: When you hear me say "downfall"

Cain: You are to signal the marines to terminate Adama's command. Starting with Adama.

Adama: I want you to pull out your weapon... and shoot Admiral Cain in the head.

Galactica - Adama's Quarters

Cain: We were docking at Scorpion Fleet Shipyard. We were getting ready to go for a three-month overhaul. Most of the crew was getting ready for extended shore leave and family reunions. XO had the deck. I was down in my quarters, wrapping up some paperwork, and getting ready to pack up and go home to Tauron. And that's when the cylons attacked. They hit the shipyard with three, maybe four nukes. Five ships, two of them Battlestars, they were destroyed right there. And by the time I got back to CIC, I discovered that I'd lost over 700 men

Roslin: My gods.

Cain: We were completely defenseless. So I ordered a jump.

Roslin: To where?

Cain: Wherever. Nowhere. Just jump.

Adama: Blind jump. You could've ended up anywhere. Gutsy call.

Cain: Desperate move. Didn't see any other choice. [Sighs] I'm sure you have quite a story to tell yourself But I won't make you go through it right this very minute. You can send over your logs when you get the chance.

Adama: Yes, sir.

Cain: Something wrong?

Roslin: No. I sometimes forget about the rules of military protocol.

Adama: Admiral Cain is my superior officer. She will take complete command of the entire fleet.

Cain: I was wondering how to broach that topic. Trust me when I say that while the chain of command is strict it is not heartless, and neither am I. This is your ship, and I have no desire to interfere with Galactica's internal affairs.

Adama: I appreciate it, Admiral.

THE LIBBY TRIAL / Cheney awaits Libby trial fallout

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_fission

Nuclear fission

In nuclear physics and nuclear chemistry, nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which the nucleus of an atom splits into smaller parts (lighter nuclei), often producing free neutrons and photons (in the form of gamma rays), as well. Fission of heavy elements is an exothermic reaction which can release large amounts of energy both as electromagnetic radiation and as kinetic energy of the fragments (heating the bulk material where fission takes place). For fission to produce energy, the total binding energy of the resulting elements has to be lower than that of the starting element. Fission is a form of nuclear transmutation because the resulting fragments are not the same element as the original atom.

Nuclear fission produces energy for nuclear power and to drive the explosion of nuclear weapons. Both uses are made possible because certain substances called nuclear fuels undergo fission when struck by free neutrons and in turn generate neutrons when they break apart. This makes possible a self-sustaining chain reaction that releases energy at a controlled rate in a nuclear reactor or at a very rapid uncontrolled rate in a nuclear weapon.

The amount of free energy contained in nuclear fuel is millions of times the amount of free energy contained in a similar mass of chemical fuel such as gasoline, making nuclear fission a very tempting source of energy. The products of nuclear fission, however, are on average far more radioactive than the heavy elements which are normally fissioned as fuel, and remain so for significant amounts of time, giving rise to a nuclear waste problem. Concerns over nuclear waste accumulation and over the destructive potential of nuclear weapons may counterbalance the desirable qualities of fission as an energy source

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_meltdown

Nuclear meltdown

A nuclear meltdown is an informal term for a severe nuclear reactor accident that results in core damage from overheating. The term is not recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency nor by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

A meltdown can occur when a severe, compounded failure of a nuclear power plant system or components causes the reactor core to cease being properly cooled to the extent that the sealed nuclear fuel assemblies – which contain the uranium or plutonium and radioactive fission products – begin to overheat and melt. By design, the geometry and composition of the reactor core do not permit the extraordinary conditions necessary for explosively prompt criticality; no nuclear reactor can explode like a bomb. All Western civil nuclear reactors are located within containment buildings; a containment building is a structure, 1.2 to 2.4 metres (3.9 to 7.9 ft) thick, made of pre-stressed, steel-reinforced, air-tight concrete that surrounds the nuclear reactor. A meltdown is considered very serious because of the remote possibility that the reactor containment could be defeated by a rapid evolution of overheated steam, thus releasing the core's radioactive
materials into the environment, leading to threats to human health from the biological effects of ionizing radiation.
