Kathi Goertzen was born in Seattle on April 30, 1958.
On December 1, 1998, it was announced that Goertzen had been suffering from a type of meningioma, a noncancerous tumor that grows on the brain stem that affects speech and the ability to swallow. The announcement led to tons of longtime KOMO viewers pouring support for Kathi, wishing for a speedy recovery. Treatment went quick for the first occurrence, and she returned to KOMO News on January 3, 1999.[2] When she returned to the program, her co-anchor, Dan Lewis, said (in tears), "Kathi, don't ever leave me like that again."
The tumor recurred in 2005, resulting in Goertzen announcing a leave of absence on September 16.

Sheriff's deputy shot and killed

A 46-year-old King County sheriff's deputy and community activist died today after he was shot while investigating a shooting in White Center.
Deputy Steve Cox, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office, was shot in the head during an interview with a suspect and died at Harborview Medical Center around 6 a.m.
Cox was a longtime White Center resident, a former deputy prosecuting attorney, the president of a local community group and the married father of a baby boy.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m., when officers responded to a call reporting gunfire near the intersection of S.W. 106th and 12th Ave S.W. They found the driver of a pick-up beaten and suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
As part of their investigation, five deputies questioned more than a dozen people at a party at a nearby residence. Cox began interviewing people one by one in the bedroom. Other deputies heard shots from that direction, and headed toward the bedroom, only to be met with a fusillade of gunfire.
At least one of the deputies returned fire. In the bedroom, they found the suspect dead from their gunshots. Cox had been shot in the head by the suspect. He was taken to Harborview and later died.
For the past 3 1/2 years, Cox was assigned to the Sheriff's Office White Center Storefront, patrolling the neighborhood where he lived. He was a committed community activist, the president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council.
Before his career with the Sheriff's office, Cox served as a deputy prosecuting attorney in King, Franklin and Adams counties.

Profiled Case: Amina Agisheff
Amina Agisheff was 35 years old at the time of her disappearance. She was last seen leaving the Stratford apartments at 2021 4th Ave. in Seattle on Wednesday, July 7, 1982. She had been visiting her mother in the Stratford apartments that day and she left at about 11:20 PM to catch a bus back to her home in Ballard, where she lived with her three children.
She was last seen wearing a black dress tucked into a pair of blue-green slacks. Amina was never seen alive again.
Her skeletal remains were recovered off of a logging road near the intersection of Highway 18 and I-90 on April 18th, 1984. Her death was classified as a homicide. Investigators are especially interested in anyone who may have seen Amina on July 7, 1982.

These are the 49 victims of the Green River killer. They are listed in the order of their disappearance, from the summer of 1982 to March 1984. Listed are the dates they were last seen and the dates when their bodies or remains were found. Those whose bodies or remains were found are numbered 1 to 42. Of the 42 found, four remain unidentified. The women who are not numbered are missing and presumed to have been victims of the killer.

July 7 always haunts Tut Agisheff.
In 1982, his 35-year-old daughter, Amina, disappeared from Seattle on that day. Her remains were discovered two years later, and she became the first known victim of the Green River killer.
``The day I received news of her disappearance, the seventh of July, is a date I cannot forget. Every year I have thoughts about it," said the Stamford, Conn., man.
Agisheff, now in his 70s, no longer stays in constant contact with police on the case: ``I cannot even watch any television shows that cover this kind of thing.
``Amina's death has made me a little bit vicious about people who don't believe in the death penalty. I would not want to talk to the killer - I would want to kill him."
Amina Agisheff had been visiting her mother at Fourth Avenue and Virginia Street. She left about 11:30 p.m. to catch a bus home at First Avenue and Pike Street - a high prostitution area - to Ballard. She was in a hurry. One of her three children had a fever.
She was never seen again.
Her remains were found April 14, 1984

King County is not much closer to solving the Green River murders than it was when the first body was found 10 years ago today.
The killer has not been found despite years of investigative work, the creation of a Green River Task Force, the expenditure of more than $15 million, the use of a $200,000 computer, the accumulation of thousands of suspects and the filling of more than 750 three-ring binders with millions of facts about the country's biggest unsolved serial-murder case.
The investigation began July 15, 1982, with the discovery of the body of Wendy Lee Coffield, 16, in the Green River just south of Kent.

Some want justice. Some want vengeance. But most simply want answers.
As word spread that Gary Ridgway, charged in the deaths of seven women believed to be victims of the Green River slayings, is expected to plead guilty to at least 48 killings in exchange for a life sentence, anger, sadness and bewilderment came pouring out from the families the victims left behind.
Of all the victims, Amina stood out. Unlike many of the victims, she was not known to be a street person or prostitute.
Agisheff was a Montessori schoolteacher and waitress, divorced and living in Ballard. On July 7, 1982, she was visiting her mother at Fourth Avenue and Virginia Street in downtown Seattle. About 11:30 p.m. she left to catch a bus. She was in a hurry to get home -- one of her three children had a fever.
She was never seen again. Her remains were found April 14, 1984

A massive, last-of-its-kind spacecraft is to launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla., Wednesday, on a seven-year voyage to two of the most alluring objects in the solar system, Saturn and its primitive Earth-like moon, Titan.
The two-story, 12,500-pound Cassini probe will make its long journey atop an Air Force Titan/Centaur, the nation's most powerful expendable rocket.
Strong, high-altitude winds and what were characterized as minor problems with computer software and a battery monitor forced postponement of the launch early Monday. The $3.4 billion mission was reset for 3:43 a.m., CDT, Wednesday.
If successful, Cassini will slip into orbit around Saturn on July 1, 2004, initiating a four-year orbital study of the solar system's second-largest planet, its distinctive ring system and 18 moons. Saturn has been photographed three times by NASA flyby missions. But Cassini will orbit for a sustained period with cameras, imaging radar and other instruments. Up to a half-million photographs could be transmitted back to Earth.
Cassini also will dispatch a companion probe, Huygens, for a three-hour, parachute descent to the surface of Titan on Nov. 27, 2004.

After nearly seven years of asking, "Are we there yet?" the Cassini-Huygens mission is poised to enter Saturn's orbit this evening.
This evening at 7:11 p.m. PDT (10:11 p.m. EDT), Cassini will cross the ring plane between Saturn's F and G rings. Its antenna will be oriented forward and act as a shield against small particles. At 7:36 p.m. PDT (10:36 p.m. EDT), the spacecraft will begin a critical 96-minute main engine burn. Once the burn is complete the spacecraft will turn and send a signal back to Earth to report how it is doing. Then it will point its cameras and other instruments at the rings.
"Orbit insertion is sort of like applying your brakes while driving your car downhill," said Mitchell. "Although you've got your foot on the brakes, you still pick up speed as a steep gravity pulls you in."

PASADENA, Calif. - The international Cassini spacecraft threaded a gap between two of Saturn's dazzling rings late Wednesday and entered orbit around the giant planet, completing one of the mission's most critical maneuvers more than 900 million miles from Earth.
Mission control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory erupted in cheers when a radio signal indicated Cassini had been captured by Saturn.
"It was kind of a nail-biter throughout but what you saw here was the result of a lot of work on the part of a lot of people and it all paid off just perfect," said Robert Mitchell, the Cassini program manager at JPL.
Propulsion engineer and mission commentator Todd Barber said the announcement came earlier because the signal had been tracked so well.

Slain deputy had become White Center's "Superman"

Giving up a successful career in law is an unusual route to becoming a beat cop.
But King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox was an unusually idealistic man, say those who knew him. Frustrated with criminals beating the legal system, he left his job as a deputy prosecutor to patrol the streets in White Center, the high-crime neighborhood near where he grew up.
To business owners and residents, he became a "Superman" who was single-handedly making the streets safer and the neighborhood better. He became so deeply involved in community issues that he was elected president of the local council. To his family, he was a man who had found new joy since he and his wife, Maria, adopted a baby, Bronson, who turned 1 in October.
Now the neighborhood is mourning after Cox, 46, was shot and killed early Saturday.
Local bartender Cheryl Moss said Cox did more than anyone else to clean up drug dealing and prostitution: "He was our Superman. And now our Superman's dead."

AT THREE THIRTY this morning, the Soviet Union detonated a very large nuclear device. Preliminary evidence indicates that its magnitude is on the order of 50 megatons. The explosion took place in the atmosphere. It will produce more radioactive fallout than any previous explosion.
The Soviet explosion was a political rather than a military act. The device exploded does not add in effectiveness against military targets to nuclear weapons now available both to the Soviet Union and the United States. It does not affect the basic balance of nuclear power. Tsar Bomba
Tsar Bomba, literally "Tsar-bomb", is the nickname for the AN602 hydrogen bomb (codenamed "Ivan"[citation needed] by its developers) — the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated, and currently the most powerful explosive ever detonated in human history.
Developed by the Soviet Union, the bomb was originally designed to have a yield of about 100 megatons of TNT (420 PJ); however, the bomb yield was reduced by half in order to limit the amount of nuclear fallout that would result. One bomb was built and tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The weapon never entered service.
A mock bomb was stored in the Russian Nuclear Weapons Museum in Sarov.
The Tsar Bomba was a three-stage hydrogen bomb with a yield of 57 megatons (Mt). This is equivalent to ten times the amount of all the explosives used in World War II combined, including Little Boy and Fat Man, the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A three-stage H-bomb uses a fission bomb primary to compress a thermonuclear secondary, as in most H-bombs, and then uses energy from the resulting explosion to compress a much larger additional thermonuclear stage. However, there is evidence that the Tsar Bomba had a number of third stages rather than a single very large one.
The initial three-stage design was capable of approximately 100 Mt, but at a cost of too much radioactive fallout. To limit fallout, the third stage, and possibly the second stage, had a lead tamper instead of a uranium-238 fusion tamper (which greatly amplifies the reaction by fissioning uranium atoms with fast neutrons from the fusion reaction). This eliminated fast fission by the fusion-stage neutrons, so that approximately 97% of the total energy resulted from fusion alone (as such, it was one of the "cleanest" nuclear bombs ever created, generating a very low amount of fallout relative to its yield). There was a strong incentive for this modification since most of the fallout from a test of the bomb would fall on populated Soviet territory.
The Tsar Bomba was flown to its test site by a specially modified Tu-95V release plane, flown by Major Andrei Durnovtsev, which took off from an airfield in the Kola peninsula. The release plane was accompanied by a Tu-16 observer plane that took air samples and filmed the test. Both aircraft were painted with a special reflective white paint to limit heat damage.
The bomb, weighing 27 tons, was so large (8 metres (26 ft) long by 2 metres (6.6 ft) in diameter) that the Tu-95V had to have its bomb bay doors and fuselage fuel tanks removed. The bomb was attached to an 800 kilogram fall-retardation parachute, which gave the release and observer planes time to fly about 45 kilometres (28 mi) from ground zero.
The Tsar Bomba detonated at 11:32 on October 30, 1961 over the Mityushikha Bay nuclear testing range (Sukhoy Nos Zone C), north of the Arctic Circle on Novaya Zemlya Island in the Arctic Sea. The bomb was dropped from an altitude of 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi); it was designed to detonate at a height of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) over the land surface (4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) over sea level) by barometric sensors.
The original U.S. estimate of the yield was 57 Mt, but since 1991 all Russian sources have stated its yield as 50 Mt. Khrushchev warned in a filmed speech to the Communist parliament of the existence of a 100 Mt bomb (technically the design was capable of this yield). The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from ground zero. The heat from the explosion could have caused third degree burns 100 km (62 miles) away from ground zero. The subsequent mushroom cloud was about 64 kilometres (40 mi) high (nearly seven times higher than Mount Everest) and 40 kilometres (25 mi) wide. The explosion could be seen and felt in Finland, breaking windows there and in Sweden. Atmospheric focusing caused blast damage up to 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) away. The seismic shock created by the detonation was measurable even on its third passage around the Earth. Its Richter magnitude was about 5 to 5.25. The energy yield was around 7.1 on the Richter scale, but since the bomb was detonated in air rather than underground, most of the energy was not converted to seismic waves.
Since 50 Mt is 2.1×1017 joules, the average power produced during the entire fission-fusion process, lasting around 39 nanoseconds, was about 5.4×1024 watts or 5.4 yottawatts (5.4 septillion watts). This is equivalent to approximately 1.4% of the power output of the Sun.
The Tsar Bomba is the single most physically powerful device ever utilized throughout the history of humanity. Its size and weight excluded a successful delivery in case of a real war.

Cop was shot once before; suspect held

Renton police Officer Larry Strauss can consider himself lucky. Then again, maybe he's unlucky.
On Sunday, for the second time in his 20-year career, Strauss was shot in the line of duty. Police officials can't recall a single other Washington case in which an officer endured multiple shootings.
After the first shooting, in 1991, Strauss was awarded a Medal of Valor, becoming the only Renton police officer to earn that honor.
Strauss, 49, was listed in serious condition Monday afternoon in the intensive-care unit of Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, suffering from a bullet wound in his neck.
"I believe he is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances," said Penny Bartley, spokeswoman for the Renton Police Department.
A suspect was arrested early Monday morning after a nearly seven-hour manhunt.
According to Bartley, Strauss saw a group of men dart across four lanes of traffic on Rainier Avenue around 7:45 p.m. Sunday and get into a van.
Strauss approached the van, which was parked in a strip-mall lot near the Renton Municipal Airport.
Bartley said so far there is no evidence that the men were fleeing a crime scene as they ran across the busy road. Nonetheless, as Strauss approached, one man ran.
According to Bartley, the suspect turned and fired, hitting Strauss in the neck. The officer returned fire and called for help, but by the time backup arrived, the suspect was gone.
