In espionage, a honeypot, more often called a honeytrap, is a trap set to capture, kill or compromise a person, commonly but not necessarily an opposition agent, officer, or employee, using sex as the lure.
There are many ways in which the technique can be used to gain advantage. If the target is genuinely attached to the person who seduces him, information can be obtained over a long period — the target may trust his or her seducer enough to reveal secrets, or may even change his allegiance due to emotional attachment. Even if the target does not deliberately give information to his seducer, the seducer may accidentally be given opportunities to obtain it herself. A long-term relationship is not necessarily the goal, however — the technique can also be used to blackmail those who later regret their actions. Incriminating photographs can be an effective tool of coercion, for example. Sometimes, the technique is nothing more than a means of getting the target to lower his guard so that he may be captured or killed, or getting him to go to a location where this is more easily accomplished.
The most common employment of this technique is by women, either female intelligence agents or (if the purpose is simply to obtain material for blackmail) prostitutes. Some intelligence agencies, particularly in the Soviet bloc, are alleged to have agents (called "swallows") specially trained for this purpose. Not all traps are carried out by women, however; sometimes, women are ensnared by male agents, and sometimes same-sex traps are used. (The latter were particularly effective during times, or in countries, where homosexuality was taboo, and the very fact that an agent was homosexual was material suitable for blackmail.) Quite often, alcohol is involved, as any inhibitions the target will be reduced.

Political readings
Some have suggested that Dr. Seuss wrote Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! as a political allegory about Richard Nixon in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal. This is unlikely, as the book was originally published in August, 1972, only two months after the Watergate break-in in June. Suggesting he could have written, illustrated, and published a book in under two months in the 1970s is extremely unlikely; moreover, there was no evidence yet to tie the White House to the burglaries.
However, two years later, when Seuss was challenged by political columnist Art Buchwald for never having written a political book, Seuss took a copy of the book and crossed out "Marvin K. Mooney" and wrote in "Richard M. Nixon." Buchwald was so delighted that with Seuss' consent he printed the text as his column for July 30, 1974. Nixon resigned nine days later on August 8.

SEATTLE - A federal prosecutor who headed a prominent gun-control group in his spare time was shot in his home and died early Friday.
Thomas Wales, 49, died about 1:15 a.m. Friday at Harborview Medical Center. He had been shot in the neck and the side late Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Details about the shooting were sketchy. The Seattle Times quoted unidentified federal sources saying the shots were through a basement window into a home office.
A neighbor, Emily Holt, said she heard the shots Thursday night and saw a man walking away. "He wasn't running, just walking real fast. He got into his car," parked about a block away, Holt said.
Wales was a member of the fraud unit in the U.S. attorney's office here, specializing in prosecution of banking and business crime, spokesman Lawrence Lincoln said. He had been in the office since 1983.
He also was board president of Seattle-based Washington Ceasefire, a gun-control group that sponsored a failed initiative in 1997 that would have required handgun owners to undergo safety training and use trigger locks on their weapons.
His death was "a terrible loss to our movement," said a statement from Michael Barnes, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
The National Rifle Association mounted a $2 million campaign against Initiative 676, which had the support of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and other prominent state residents.
Federal agencies were assisting Seattle police in the investigation. Officials with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms declined to comment.
Neighbors in the wealthy Queen Anne Hill neighborhood said they heard shots shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday.

Nearly a decade after the murder of her father, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Wales, Amy Wales has words for him -- and for whoever committed the crime.
For her father, she has love and a hole in her heart, and the promise that she and her brother will never give up on him.
For the assassin who shot Wales as he sat typing inside the family’s Queen Anne home – a man who has escaped justice since the October 2001 slaying despite the efforts of the FBI and Seattle Police Department – Amy Wales offered a simple declaration.
“I am not afraid of you,” Amy Wales said Wednesday, flanked by her brother Tom Wales, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Attorney for Western Washington Jenny Durkan.
Wales’ children addressed the media as part of a kickoff for the most ambitious public outreach campaign to date aimed at bringing the killer to justice.
Holder was on hand in Seattle to announce the renewed effort, which will include billboard and media announcements meant to encourage anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or WalesTips@ic.fbi.gov. King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn were on hand for the show of force, as were former Mayor Greg Nickels and Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess.
Wales, a federal prosecutor of 18 years assigned to the white collar crime unit, was seated at a desk in the basement of his home on Oct. 11, 2001, when a gunman fired on him through a window. He died the following day.
“We will never give up our search for the truth,” Holder said. “This is an active case. This is an active investigation. We continue to constantly and aggressively pursue leads.”

On the night of October 11, 2001, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Thomas Crane Wales was killed in his home in Seattle, Washington. Wales worked for the Western District of Washington as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for over 18 years, prosecuting white collar crime cases on behalf of the United States of America. The shooter stood in the backyard of AUSA Wales' home and shot him several times through a basement window as he sat at his desk typing on his computer. It has been reported that a lone male suspect was seen fleeing the scene. Wales died at a hospital the next day.

A Lamborghini Miura drives through the Italian Alps, enters a tunnel, crashes and explodes. A bulldozer pulls the remains from the tunnel and dumps them down a steep alpine gorge. Some time later dapper mobster Charlie Croker (Caine) is released from prison. He soon meets with the widow (Goldoni) of his friend and fellow thief Roger Beckermann (Brazzi), victim of the Miura crash. She gives Croker her husband's plans for the robbery that attracted the attention of the Italian Mafia. The plans outline a way to rob the payroll of Turin-based automaker Fiat, and spirit it out of Italy.
Croker decides to continue the plan despite the risks, but needs a large, well-equipped gang. He breaks into jail to meet Mr Bridger (Coward), a criminal who runs a gangland empire from prison. Croker explains "the Italian Job" but Bridger dismisses the plan out of hand, and indeed orders Croker be given "a good going-over" for disturbing his privacy.
Bridger changes his mind shortly after, when it is announced that China is delivering a consignment of gold to Turin, as down-payment to Fiat for the building of a car factory. With this backing, Croker assembles a group including computer expert Professor Peach (Hill), electronics handler Birkinshaw (Emney) and several getaway drivers. The plan calls for Peach to infect Turin's computerised traffic control to create a paralyzing traffic jam that will prevent the police from recapturing the gold.

Windsor Castle has opened to the public for the first time since fire destroyed more than 100 rooms in 1992.
The fire, on November 20 1992, severely damaged the north-east section of the castle, including St George's Hall and the Grand Reception Room.
It started in the chapel, where the heat of a spotlight caused a curtain to ignite.
Flames quickly spread and it took 250 firefighters from across London and the Home Counties more than 15 hours to put out the blaze

NEW YORK -- Investigators of the massive blast at the World Trade Center were stymied Saturday by the severity of the damage as the city awakened to an emotional and economic aftershock.
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said it may be days before investigators can sift through the rubble at the epicenter of Friday's explosion, which killed five and injured more than 1,000 at the soaring business and trade center in lower Manhattan.
Forensic investigators were barred by engineers from entering the area until sections of the underground parking garage where the blast originated could be shored up.
But even in the absence of forensic reports, police and other officials agreed that a massive bomb or bombs probably caused the violent explosion. Three levels of the parking garage were devastated.
"There is a great crater in there, and it is difficult to imagine what else could have caused it," said New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, who toured the site Saturday morning.
"If it looks like a bomb and smells like a bomb, then it's probably a bomb. . . . The answer is to find out who did it, apprehend the people who did it and punish them."

It kept getting worse.
The horror arrived in episodic bursts of chilling disbelief, signified first by trembling floors, sharp eruptions, cracked windows. There was the actual unfathomable realization of a gaping, flaming hole in first one of the tall towers, and then the same thing all over again in its twin. There was the merciless sight of bodies helplessly tumbling out, some of them in flames.
Finally, the mighty towers themselves were reduced to nothing. Dense plumes of smoke raced through the downtown avenues, coursing between the buildings, shaped like tornadoes on their sides.
Every sound was cause for alarm. A plane appeared overhead. Was another one coming? No, it was a fighter jet. But was it friend or enemy? People scrambled for their lives, but they didn't know where to go. Should they go north, south, east, west? Stay outside, go indoors? People hid beneath cars and each other. Some contemplated jumping into the river.
For those trying to flee the very epicenter of the collapsing World Trade Center towers, the most horrid thought of all finally dawned on them: nowhere was safe.

Naive, by the book French police officer Nester Patou, is transferred to the Red Light district. The leading Kingfish exploded eight hundred yards from Nimitz's port quarter. The thousand kilograms of high explosive rocked the ship. Toland felt it, wondering if the ship had been hit. Around him, the CIC crewmen were concentrating frantically on their jobs. One target track vanished from the screen. Four left.
The next Kingfish approached the carrier's bow and was blasted out of the sky by the forward CIWS, too close aboard. Fragments ripped across the carrier's deck, killing a dozen exposed crewmen.
Number three was decoyed by a chaff cloud and ran straight into the sea half a mile behind the carrier. The warhead caused the carrier to vibrate and raised a column of water a thousand feet into the air.
The fourth and fifth missiles came in from aft, not a hundred yards apart. The after gun mount tracked on both, but couldn't decide which to engage first. It went into Reset mode and petulantly didn't engage any. The missiles hit within a second of one another, one on the after port corner of the flight deck, the other on the number two arrestor wire.
Toland was thrown fifteen feet, and slammed against a radar console. Next he saw a wall of pink flame that washed briefly over him. Then came the noises. First the thunder of the explosion. Then the screams. The after CIC bulkhead was no longer there; instead there was a mass of flame. Men twenty feet away were ablaze, staggering and screaming before his eyes. Toland's only thought was escape. He bolted for the watertight door. It opened miraculously under his hand and he ran to starboard. The ship's fire-suppression systems were already on, showering everything with a curtain of saltwater. His skin burned from it as he emerged, hair and uniform singed, to the flight deck catwalk. A sailor directed a water hose on him, nearly knocking him over the side.
"Fire in the CIC!" Toland gasped.
"What the hell ain't!" the sailor screamed.
Toland fell to his knees and looked outboard. Foch had been to their north, he remembered. Now there was a pillar of smoke. As he watched, the last Kingfish was detonated a hundred feet over Saratoga's flight deck. The carrier seemed undamaged. Three miles away, Ticonderoga's after superstructure was shredded and ablaze from a rocket that had blown up within yards of her. On the horizon a ball of flame announced the destruction of yet another - my God, Toland thought, might that be Saipan? She had two thousand Marines aboard ...
"Get foreward, you dumbass!" a firefighter yelled at him. Another man emerged to the catwalk.
"Toland, you all right?" It was Captain Svenson, his shirt torn away and his chest bleeding from a half-dozen cuts.
"Yes, sir," Bob answered.
"Get to the bridge. Tell 'em to put the wind on the starboard beam. Move!" Svenson jumped onto the flight deck.
Toland did likewise, racing forward. The deck was awash in firefighting foam, slippery as oil. Toland ran recklessly, falling hard on the deck before he reached the carrier's island. He was in the pilothouse in under a minute.
"Captain says put the wind on the starboard beam!" Toland said.
"It is on the fucking beam!" the executive officer snapped back. The bridge was covered in broken glass. "How's the skipper?"
"Alive. He's aft with the fire."
"And who the hell are you?" the XO demanded.
"Toland, group intel. I was in CIC."
"Then you are one lucky bastard. That second bird hit fifty yards from you. Captain got out? Anyone else?
"I don't know. Burning like hell."
"Looks like you caught part of it, Commander."
Bob's face felt as if he'd shaved with a piece of glass. His eyebrows crumpled to his touch. "Flashburns, I guess. I'll be okay. What do you want me to do?"
The XO pointed to Toland's water wings. "Can you conn the ship? Okay, do it. Nothing left to run into anyway. I'm going aft to take charge of the fire. Communications are out, radar's out, but the engines are okay and the hull's in good shape. Mr. Bice has the deck. Mr. Toland has the conn," XO announced as he left.
Toland hadn't conned anything bigger than a Boston Whaler in over ten years, and now he had a damaged carrier. He took a pair of binoculars and looked around to see what ships were nearby. What he saw chilled him.
Saratoga was the only ship that looked intact, but on second glance her radar mast was askew. Foch was lower in the water than she ought to have been, and ablaze from bow to stern.
"Where's Saipan?"
"Blew up like a fucking firework, Commander Bice replied. "Holy Jesus, there were twenty-five hundred men aboard!" Tico took one close aboard. Foch took three hits, looks like she's gone. Two frigates and a destroyer gone, too - just fucking gone, man! Who fucked up? You were in CIC, right? Who fucked up?"

SEATTLE - A federal prosecutor who headed a prominent gun-control group in his spare time was shot in his home and died early Friday.
Thomas Wales, 49, died about 1:15 a.m. Friday at Harborview Medical Center. He had been shot in the neck and the side late Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Details about the shooting were sketchy. The Seattle Times quoted unidentified federal sources saying the shots were through a basement window into a home office.
A neighbor, Emily Holt, said she heard the shots Thursday night and saw a man walking away. "He wasn't running, just walking real fast. He got into his car," parked about a block away, Holt said.
Wales was a member of the fraud unit in the U.S. attorney's office here, specializing in prosecution of banking and business crime, spokesman Lawrence Lincoln said. He had been in the office since 1983.
He also was board president of Seattle-based Washington Ceasefire, a gun-control group that sponsored a failed initiative in 1997 that would have required handgun owners to undergo safety training and use trigger locks on their weapons.
His death was "a terrible loss to our movement," said a statement from Michael Barnes, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
The National Rifle Association mounted a $2 million campaign against Initiative 676, which had the support of Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and other prominent state residents.
Federal agencies were assisting Seattle police in the investigation. Officials with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms declined to comment.
Neighbors in the wealthy Queen Anne Hill neighborhood said they heard shots shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday.

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire.

Frank B. Parker is a fictional character in the television series Seven Days, played by Jonathan LaPaglia. He is the lead chrononaut for the NSA's "Backstep" program. Before being recurited for Backstep, Parker served as a Lieutenant in the Navy SEAL Teams, and an intelligence operative for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He now lives in the NSA Backstep facility at Area 51 in Groom Dry Lake, Nevada, code-named "Never Never Land," or "NNL" for short.
At some point, Parker joined the Navy, serving in the Navy SEAL Teams, where he gained a reputation while going through training for not being a team player. While serving in Somolia, presumably during Operation Gothic Serpent of Black Hawk Down-fame, Parker was captured by Somali Militants and placed into a hot box. He was rescued by a team led by Craig Donovan, a friend and fellow SEAL who would later serve with Parker at the Backstep Program. Unfortunately the hot box experience scarred him mentally, leading to bouts of claustrophobia and flash-backs. Parker went on to work for the CIA's Special Activities Division, before suffering a mental breakdown while working an operation in Honduras, leading the government to deem him a threat to national security. He was subsequently locked away at the CIA's mental institution, Hanson Island, off the coast of North Carolina, where he was initially approached by the NSA to work for the Backstep Program.

Weird Science is a 1985 American teen comedy film written and directed by John Hughes and starring Anthony Michael Hall
In the opening scene, two Shermer High School nerds, Gary Wallace (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt Donnelly (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) are in their high school gym watching a group of girls practicing their gymnastics routines. The two boys are lamenting their lot in life and fantasizing about being popular and being able to attract girls. The scene ends when the two geeks are pantsed by school bullies, Ian (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Max (Robert Rusler).
The action then cuts to Wyatt's house, where the boys have the house to themselves because Wyatt's parents are out of town for the weekend. Inspired by the film Frankenstein, the boys decide to create a "virtual" and "perfect" woman on their home computer. They design their "perfect" woman by filling their computer with various forms of data and images. When their computer reaches capacity, they decide to hack into a government mainframe for more processing power and data storage capacity. As a finishing touch they connect a Barbie doll to Wyatt's computer through a series of wires and electrodes. At the exact moment they hit "enter" to execute their program, a lightning bolt strikes their house leading to a series of supernatural occurrences. The scene ends with a violent explosion and when the smoke clears a beautiful woman (Kelly LeBrock) emerges from Wyatt's bathroom.

WASHINGTON —
President Obama invited two of the world's richest men to the White House Tuesday to discuss ways to boost the U.S. economy.
The White House says Obama's meeting with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett focused on ideas for spurring economic growth and making the U.S. more competitive. They also discussed opportunities to invest in innovative industries that have growth potential.
Obama has frequently consulted with Buffett on economic issues. The billionaire has said he favors letting the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans expire, a position Obama also held before striking a with congressional Republicans to allow the tax cuts to continue.
Gates' wife, Melinda, also took part in the Oval Office meeting.

Jack Woltz
Jack Woltz is a fictional character from the Mario Puzo novel The Godfather and the 1972 film adaptation. In the film, he is portrayed by John Marley.
Woltz is a Jewish movie producer who refuses to cast the singer/actor Johnny Fontane in a war film that would revive Johnny's flagging career. Fontane asks Don Vito Corleone, who is the head of an organized crime family and his godfather, to lean on Woltz. Corleone sends his consigliere, Tom Hagen, to Hollywood to "reason" with Woltz.
Hagen offers to help Woltz with union trouble in return for casting Fontane. The offer may have been sincere, but could also be interpreted as a threat that union trouble will likely arise if Woltz does not cooperate. Woltz loses his temper, shouting anti-Italian slurs at Hagen, and refuses to bargain. Later, after learning Hagen represents Don Corleone, he appears more eager to listen, even inviting Hagen to dinner at his sumptuous estate. However, in the end, Woltz still refuses to cast Fontane, explaining to Hagen that Johnny had run off with one of his young female stars-in-the-making (with whom Woltz had been having an affair) and made him out to look ridiculous.
The self-made millionaire Woltz, who exudes the demeanor of a New York street tough, spurns the veiled threat of violence residing under Hagen's cool corporate attorney facade by telling him "I ain't no bandleader" (referring to the incident where Don Corleone secured Johnny's release from a personal services contract with a bandleader by having Luca Brasi threaten him with a gun). But the following morning, in one of the most famous scenes in movie history, Woltz wakes up to find the decapitated head of his prized stud horse, Khartoum, in his bed with him. Although he phones the Corleones and furiously threatens to bring the law on their heads, he ultimately gives in to their wishes and casts Fontane.

Other plans with other names applied to different scenarios, including many for the use of tactical and even strategic nuclear arms, something no one in uniform wished to contemplate. "In two parts. The first is purely political, to work against the United States. The second part, immediately before the war begins, is from KGB. You know it, from KGB Group Nord. We reviewed it two years ago."
Rozhkov grunted. Group Nord was an ad hoc committee of KGB department chiefs, first assembled by then-chief of the KGB Yuri Andropov in the mid-1970s. Its purpose was to research political and psychological operations aimed at undermining Western will. Its specific plan to shake the NATO military and political structure in preparation for a shooting war was Nord's proudest example of legerdemain.

"Moe Letter Blues" is the twenty-first episode of The Simpsons' twenty-first season. It aired on the Fox network in the United States on May 9, 2010. In this episode, Homer, Reverend Lovejoy, and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon receive a letter from Moe stating that he will steal one of their wives.
Moe's Tavern is the scene of merry-making for the people of Springfield, and Moe relates how his role as bartender gives him insight into his customers' lives. He notices tension in the marriages of Homer, who argues about what to do for Mother's Day, Apu, who puts on a song in the car that Manjula dislikes, and Reverend Lovejoy, who does not want to help Helen because he is playing with a train set. Mother's Day is approaching, and Marge suggests that Homer take the children to Weasel Island after Krusty the Clown suggests it on his show (so that the mothers can have a break), and it leads into the aforementioned argument. At first Homer is enthusiastic, but becomes concerned when Marge mentions his leaving will allow her to "take care of something." As the ferry to the island pulls away from the dock, the three men receive a letter from Moe informing them that he is running off with one of their wives.

In the spring of 1964, U.S. fighter/bombers began to bomb targets deep inside North Vietnam. At this time, these aircrews discovered multiple SAM sites in and around Hanoi. Later, this proved to be just the tip of the iceberg! American intelligence was aware of the SAM sites that ringed Moscow, but the Hanoi-area SAMs were found to be the most sophisticated air-defense system outside the Soviet Union.
The SA-2 missile was considered to be a superweapon that had to be dealt with immediately. It carried a warhead that contained about 2,000 pounds of high explosives and could achieve a blinding speed of Mach 3.0 plus. Its reach extended for at least 30 miles, and with these sites scattered in a planned pattern, there were very few gaps in the coverage as you got closer to Hanoi. During the early air strikes, the American aircrews' biggest advantage was that the SA-2 was literally a 35-foot "telephone pole" that spouted a long plume of flame; this made it easy to spot. If pilots from the strike packages could see it coming, there was a chance to beat it with some violent maneuvers. Official records show that the first USAF aircraft shot down by an SA-2 was an F4C Phantom on July 24, 1965. The Phantoms were in a flight of four, and the exploding missile put countless holes in the surviving aircraft. This was just an early warning of things to come!

McCafferty took a long pull from his mug. Two miles away Chicago was reprovisioning. They'd be in port for two days. Boston and another 688-class sub were tied to the same quay, with another pair due in later today. They were to be outfitted for a special mission, but they didn't know what it was. In the meantime, the officers and crewmen were using their modicum of free time to breathe fresh air and unwind. "You're right, Todd, right as ever."
"Good. Have some pretzels. Looks like quite a shindig over there. How about we wander over?" Simms lifted his beer and walked to the end of the room.
They found a gathering of submarine officers, which was not a surprise, but the center of attention was. He was a Norwegian captain, a blond man of about thirty who clearly hadn't been sober for several hours. As soon as he drained one jar of beer, a Royal Navy commander handed him another.
"I must find the man who save us!" the Norwegian insisted loudly and drunkenly.
"What gives?" Simms asked. Introductions were exchanged. The Royal Navy officer was captain of HMS Oberon.
"This is the chappie who blasted Kirov all the way back to Murmansk," he said. "He tells the story about every ten minutes. About time for him to begin again."
"Son of a bitch," McCafferty said. This was the guy who had sunk his target! Sure enough, the Norwegian began speaking again.
"We make out approach slowly. They come right" - he belched - "to us, and we creep very slow. I put periscope up, and there he is! Four thousand meters, twenty knots, he will pass within five hundred meters starboard." The beer mug swept toward the floor. "Down periscope! Arne - where are you, Arne? Oh, is drunk at table. Arne is weapons officer. He set to fire four torpedoes. Type thirty-seven, American torpedoes." He gestured at the two American officers who had just joined the crowd.
Four Mark-37s! McCafferty winced at the thought. That could ruin your whole day.
"Kirov is very close now. Up periscope! Course same, speed same, distance now two thousand meters - I shoot! One! Two! Three! Four! Reload and dive deep."
"You're the guy who ruined my approach!" McCafferty shouted.
The Norwegian almost appeared sober for a moment. "Who are you?"
"Dan McCafferty, USS Chicago."
"You were there?"
"Yes."
"You shoot missiles?"
"Yes."
"Hero!" The Norwegian submarine commander ran to McCafferty, almost knocking him down as he wrapped the American in a crushing bear hug. "You save my men! You save my ship!"
"What the hell is this?" Simms asked.
"Oh, introductions," said a Royal Navy captain. "Captain Bjorn Johannsen of His Norwegian Majesty's submarine Kobben. Captain Daniel McCafferty of USS Chicago."
"After we shoot Kirov, they come around us like wolves. Kirov blow up -"
"Four fish? I believe it," Simms agreed.
"Russians come to us with cruiser, two destroyers," Johannsen continued, now quite sober. "We, ah, evade, go deep, but they find us and fire their RBU rockets - many, many rockets. Most far, some close. We reload and I shoot at cruiser."
"You hit her?"
"One hit, hurt but not sink. This take, I am not sure, ten minutes, fifteen. It was a very busy time, yes?"
"Me, too. We came in fast, flipped on the radar. There were three ships where we thought Kirov was."
"Kirov was sunk - blow up! What you see was the cruiser and two destroyers. Then you shoot missiles, yes?" Johannsen's eyes sparkled.
"Three Harpoons. A Helix saw the launch and came after us. We evaded, never did know if the missiles hit anything."
"Hit? Hah! Let me tell you." Johannsen gestured. "We dead, battery down. We have damage now, cannot run. We already evade four torpedoes, but they have us now. Sonar have us. Destroyer fire RBU at us. First three miss, but they have us. Then - Boom! Boom! Boom! Many more. Destroyer blow up. Other hit, but not sink, I think.
"We escape." Johannsen hugged McCafferty again, and both spilled their beer on the floor. The American had never seen a Norwegian display this much emotion, even around his wife. "My crew alive because of you, Chicago! I buy you drink. I buy all your men drink."
"You are sure we killed that tin can?"
"You not kill," Johannsen said. "My ship dead, my men dead. I dead. You kill." A destroyer wasn't exactly as good as sinking a nuclear-powered battle crusier, McCafferty told himself, but it was a whole lot better than nothing, too. And a piece of another, he reminded himself. And who knows, maybe that one sank on the way home.
"Not too shabby, Dan," Simms observed.
"Some people," said the skipper of HMS Oberon, "have all the bloody luck!"
"You know, Todd," said the commanding officer of USS Chicago, "this is pretty good beer."

On the theme of something I wrote earlier today, I have been thinking for several days, maybe weeks or longer, about something I said to Lynn after I came back from Utah in 2002. I was joking about the lousy lake we had to swim in. I joked that I went down to the water and then asked myself: "who organized this race, Osama bin Laden?" I went on to describe to her some thoughts that I don't know why I was having about how terrorists would go after the most physically fit people in preparation for an invasion. Now that I think about, I now remember something I read about the Soviets planning something like that with pilots in a country, Norway I think, in preparation for a Warsaw Pact invasion of NATO. They kept track of all the pilots in their homes and then planned to murder them just before the invasion took place so they wouldn't be in the air to fight back.
Watching the news today, I'm thinking Reichert is hiding something.

The loss of northern Norway had eliminated the utility of Realtime. The submarine was still on station gathering signal intelligence, but the task of spotting the outbound Russian bomber streams passed on to British and Norwegian patrol aircraft operating out of Scotland. One of the latter spotted a three-plane Vic of Badgers heading southwest and radioed a warning. The Russian aircraft were roughly seventy minutes from the fleet.
Toland's station in CIC was immediately below the flight deck, and he listened to the roar of jet engines overhead as the fighters catapulted off. He was nervous. Toland knew that the tactical situation was very different now from that on the second day of the war, but he also remembered that he was one of the two men who'd escaped alive from a compartment just like this. A flood of information came into the room. The land-based radar, the Air Force E-3, and the Navy E-2s all linked their data to the carriers. There was enough electromagnetic energy in the sky to cook the birds in flight. The display showed the fighters proceeding to their stations. The Tomcats reached out to the northern Icelandic shore, curving into loitering circles as they awaited the Russian bombers.

Slain prosecutor targeted

Investigators say a respected federal prosecutor and gun-control activist who was shot to death in the basement of his Queen Anne Hill home was the target of a hit that sent detectives and FBI agents scouring his private and professional life for a motive and suspects.
The calculated slaying of Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas C. Wales late Thursday night stunned the Seattle legal and law-enforcement communities

Nasa Launches Spacecraft To Gather Comet Material

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA's Stardust spacecraft was winging its way into space today on a mission to fly through the dust storm of a comet and bring back samples for analysis.
If the seven-year voyage is successful, scientists will get a first-hand look at some of the materials that gave birth to the solar system, provided the water for Earth's oceans and presumably seeded the planet with the organic building blocks of life.
"Comets can tell us about the history of the early solar system and the early history, perhaps, of our own Earth," said Martha Hanner of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, an astronomer taking part in the historic Stardust mission.
"The comets we see today have been essentially parked in cold storage for much of the four-and-a-half-billion-year history of our solar system," she said. "So they're truly frozen time capsules and that's why we're so interested in them."
Stardust began its 3 billion-mile journey yesterday

GLENN T. SEABORG WAS a world-renowned nuclear chemist, educator, scientific advisor to 10 U.S. presidents, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate in chemistry. He is probably best known for his leadership of the team that in 1941 accomplished the first chemical separation and positive identification of plutonium and his "revolutionary" actinide concept (1944) in which he placed the first 14 elements heavier than actinium in the periodic table of elements as a 5f transition series under the lanthanide 4f transition series. He went on to be codiscoverer of 9 elements beyond plutonium
During Seaborg's graduate years and later, he closely followed the developments from Enrico Fermi's group in Italy, which was bombarding uranium with neutrons and producing what they thought were transuranium elements, and the research of Otto Hahn, Lise Meitner, and Fritz Strassmann in Berlin on these so-called transuranium elements. These results were widely discussed in Berkeley at the weekly nuclear seminars and physics journal club meetings. In January 1939 the exciting news of the discovery of nuclear fission by the Berlin Group came through to Berkeley by word of mouth. Edwin M. McMillan and Philip H. Abelson then set out to study the fission process in bombardments of uranium with neutrons at Berkeley's new 60-inch cyclotron. Quite unexpectedly, they produced and identified the first "real" transuranium element, which they chemically separated and identified as element 93, for which they proposed the name neptunium. McMillan then began a search for the next heavier transuranium element (atomic number 94), but was soon called to wartime research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Seaborg received McMillan's permission to continue this search. In February 1941 Seaborg led a team consisting of fellow instructor Joseph W. Kennedy and Seaborg's first graduate student, Arthur C. Wahl, in performing the first chemical separation and positive identification of plutonium. It was produced as the isotope plutonium-238 in deuteron bombardments of uranium. Soon after, the new isotope plutonium-239 was produced and was found to be highly fissionable. (Because of potential military applications in nuclear weapons, these results were voluntarily withheld from publication until 1946, after World War II.) These discoveries led to the U.S. decision to undertake a crash program to develop nuclear reactors for plutonium production to be used in the U.S. atomic bomb project. In April 1942 Seaborg took a leave of absence from Berkeley to go to the University of Chicago Metallurgical Laboratory to direct the work on the chemical extraction and purification of the plutonium produced in the reactors.

§ 3005. Counsel and witnesses in capital cases
Whoever is indicted for treason or other capital crime shall be allowed to make his full defense by counsel; and the court before which the defendant is to be tried, or a judge thereof, shall promptly, upon the defendant’s request, assign 2 such counsel, of whom at least 1 shall be learned in the law applicable to capital cases, and who shall have free access to the accused at all reasonable hours. In assigning counsel under this section, the court shall consider the recommendation of the Federal Public Defender organization, or, if no such organization exists in the district, of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The defendant shall be allowed, in his defense to make any proof that he can produce by lawful witnesses, and shall have the like process of the court to compel his witnesses to appear at his trial, as is usually granted to compel witnesses to appear on behalf of the prosecution.

WASHINGTON -- In an extraordinary White House news conference, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton fielded questions for more than an hour Friday, denying that there were improprieties related to the Whitewater Development Corp. or her commodities market investments.
She said the confusion about the Clintons' 1970s financial dealings -- which has sparked the appointment of a special counsel and calls by Republicans for congressional hearings -- resulted from "our inexperience in Washington" and the demands for personal information.
"It's a learning experience -- sometimes a difficult one," Clinton said. "This is not a long-term problem or issue in any way, but I don't want anybody to have the wrong impression of either of us, and I don't want anything to interfere with doing what the people of this country need done."
Clinton appeared relaxed as she sat in a chair framed by the fireplace in the State Dining Room. A portrait of Lincoln looked down upon her.
In a calm, commanding, occasionally apologetic performance, she lost her composure only once, when asked about former President Nixon, who was said to be near death at the time. She noted that she lost her own father a year ago this month and, as tears welled in her eyes, she said she felt for Nixon's daughters.
