Larry backed into the cage.
Now it was Barry Dorgan giving the orders. He went from place to place, checking arrangements, a set expression of disgust on his face.
The four drivers got into the cars and started them up. Ralph stood blankly for a moment, then seized one of the welded handcuffs that dangled into his cage and threw it out through the small hole. It hit Paul Burlson on the head, and a nervous titter ran through the crowd.
Dorgan said, “You don’t want to do that, fella. I’ll just have to send some guys to hold you.”
“Let them do their thing,” Larry said to Ralph. He looked down at Dorgan. “Hey, Barry. Did they teach you this one in the Santa Monica P.D.?”
Another laugh rippled through the crowd. “Police brutality!” some daring soul cried. Dorgan flushed but said nothing. He fed the chains farther into Larry’s cell and Larry spit on them, a little surprised that he had enough saliva to do it. A small cheer went up from the back of the crowd and Larry thought, Maybe this is it, maybe they’re going to rise up —
But his heart didn’t believe it. Their faces were too pale, too secretive. The defiance from the back was meaningless. It was the sound of kids cutting up in a studyhall, no more than that. There was doubt here—he could feel it—and disaffection. But Flagg colored even that. These people would steal away in the dead of night for some of the great empty space that the world had become. And the Walkin Dude would let them go, knowing he only had to keep a hard core, people like Dorgan and Burlson. The runners and midnight creepers could be gathered up later, perchance to pay the price of their imperfect faith. There would be no open rebellion here.
Dorgan, Rat-Man, and a third man crowded their way into the cage with him. Rat-Man was holding the cuffs welded to the chains open for Larry’s wrists.
“Put out your arms,” Dorgan said.
“Isn’t law and order a wonderful thing, Barry?”
“Put them out, goddammit!”
“You don’t look well, Dorgan—how’s your heart these days?”
“I’m telling you for the last time, my friend. Put your arms out through those holes!”
Larry did it. The cuffs were slipped on and locked. Dorgan and the others backed out and the door was shut. Larry looked right and saw Ralph standing in his cage, head down, arms at his sides. His wrists had also been cuffed.
“You people know this is wrong!” Larry cried, and his voice, trained by years of singing, rolled out of his chest with surprising strength. “I don’t expect you to stop it, but I do expect you to remember it! We’re being put to death because Randall Flagg is afraid of us! He’s afraid of us and the people we came from!” A rising murmur ran through the crowd. “Remember the way we die! And remember that next time it may be your turn to die this way, with no dignity, just an animal in a cage!”

That night he dreamed that both Frannie and her terrible wolf-child had died in childbirth. He heard George Richardson saying from a great distance: It’s the flu. No more babies because of the flu. Pregnancy is death because of the flu. A chicken in every pot and a wolf in every womb. Because of the flu. We’re all done. Mankind is done. Because of the flu.
And from somewhere nearer, closing in, came the dark man’s howling laughter.
On Christmas Eve they began a run of good traveling that would last almost until the New Year. The surface of the snow had crusted up in the cold. The wind blew swirling clouds of ice-crystals over it to pile up in powdery herring-bone dunes that the John Deere snowmobile cut through easily. They wore sunglasses to guard against snow blindness.
They camped, that Christmas Eve, on top of the crust twenty-four miles east of Avon, not far from Silverthorne. They were in the throat of Loveland Pass now, the choked and buried Eisenhower Tunnel somewhere below and to the east of them. While they were waiting for dinner to warm up, Stu discovered an amazing thing. Idly using an axe to chop through the crust and his hand to dig out the loose powder beneath, he had discovered blue metal only an arm’s length below where they sat. He almost called Tom’s attention to his find, and then thought better of it. The thought that they were sitting less than two feet above a traffic jam, less than two feet above God only knew how many dead bodies, was an unsettling one.
When Tom woke up on the morning of the twenty-fifth at quarter of seven, he found Stu already up and cooking breakfast, which was something of an oddity; Tom was almost always up before Stu. There was a pot of Campbell’s vegetable soup hanging over the fire, just coming to a simmer. Kojak was watching it with great enthusiasm.
“Morning, Stu,” Tom said, zipping his jacket and crawling out of his sleeping bag and his shelter half. He had to whiz something terrible.
“Morning,” Stu answered casually. “And a merry Christmas.”
“Christmas?” Tom looked at him and forgot all about how badly he had to whiz. “Christmas? ” he said again.
“Christmas morning.” He hooked a thumb to Tom’s left. “Best I could do.”
Stuck into the snowcrust was a spruce-top about two feet high. It was decorated with a package of silver icicles Stu had found in the back room of the Avon Five-and-Ten.
“A tree,” Tom whispered, awed. “And presents. Those are presents, aren’t they, Stu?”
There were three packages on the snow under the tree, all of them wrapped in light blue tissue paper with silver wedding bells on it—there had been no Christmas paper at the five-and-ten, not even in the back room.
“They’re presents, all right,” Stu said. “For you. From Santa Claus, I guess.”
Tom looked indignantly at Stu. “Tom Cullen knows there’s no Santa Claus! Laws, no! They’re from you!” He began to look distressed. “And I never got you one thing! I forgot… I didn’t know it was Christmas… I’m stupid! Stupid!” He balled up his fist and struck himself in the center of the forehead. He was on the verge of tears.
Stu squatted on the snowcrust beside him. “Tom,” he said. “You gave me my Christmas present early.”
“No, sir, I never did. I forgot. Tom Cullen’s nothing but a dummy, M-O-O-N, that spells dummy.”
“But you did, you know. The best one of all. I’m still alive. I wouldn’t be, if it wasn’t for you.”
Tom looked at him uncomprehendingly.
“If you hadn’t come along when you did, I would have died in that washout west of Green River.

Judge rules $1.9 million needed for Ridgway's defense

A King County Superior Court judge ruled today that lawyers for Gary Ridgway need the $1.9 million they want for Ridgway's legal defense.
Judge Richard Jones, who called the Metropolitan King County Council to court to explain why no decision had been made on the funding, did not order the council to approve the funding today, but said he expects to meet with council representatives after July 22, when the council is to consider the matter.
Mark Prothero, one of Ridgway's attorneys, said he was confident the council would approve the appropriation based on the judge's findings.
"I think the council understands now that the money needs to be appropriated," he said.
Jones had ordered Council Chairwoman Cynthia Sullivan or her representative to appear at today's hearing to explain the status of the funding request. Lawyers for Ridgway, who is charged with aggravated murder in four slayings attributed to the Green River killer, requested the hearing.
A spokesman for Council Chairwoman Cynthia Sullivan could not be reached immediately after the hearing.
Jones' order said the court had been informed "the King County Council has delayed taking any action and has not authorized the appropriation of these funds."
A lawyer for Sullivan, who was not at the hearing, suggested that the complexities and unusual circumstances surrounding the case may have slowed down the approval process. Attorney Marc Boman asked the judge to make a determination for the record that the council had not delayed the appropriation, which Jones said he would not do at this point.
Ridgway's four lawyers requested the money to add four more lawyers to his defense team, and to fund additional paralegals, investigators and data analysts.
A "special master" appointed to advise the court on defense expenditures already has determined the request is justified.
The special master, whose identity was ordered sealed, was chosen in part because of the person's knowledge of death-penalty cases.
The county Office of Public Defense sought the appointment of a special master in April because of the extraordinary nature of the case. The Green River Task Force is still investigating the deaths or disappearances of 49 women between 1982 and 1984.
Ridgway, who could face the death penalty if convicted, has pleaded not guilty to the four charges of murder.
The appointment of a special master was intended to ensure a neutral party would review funding requests and, to some extent, protect the county and the court from political debate over the case. But there has been considerable wrangling over the special master's role, as well as the $1.9 million funding request.
The defense team "is not critical of the council," said Michele Shaw, one of Ridgway's lawyers. "We know there's a lot of work going into the budget process."
"We felt it necessary to have Judge Jones intervene with the appropriation of funds," she said. "We just feel he will be able to clarify his intent (concerning) the appointment of a special master."
Last month, Dan Satterberg, chief of staff for King County Prosecuting Attorney Norm Maleng, told reporters Ridgway's lawyers weren't seeking a "Ford or a Chevy" defense but were asking for "the whole Porsche dealership."
Following those remarks, Ridgway's team sought a gag order to stop prosecutors from speaking out about the proposed defense costs and the process for allocating public funds.
Shaw argued Satterberg's comments were designed to influence County Council debate on paying for Ridgway's defense.
Jones denied the request but agreed it was offensive to compare Ridgway's defense to car types. He said prosecutors had come "dangerously close to misrepresentation of fact" when they said Ridgway's lawyers didn't need to investigate unsolved Green River cases.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.
Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.
The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.
Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."
The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.
The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.
There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.
Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.
They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.
A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.
The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.
U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

Henry Kruger, publisher of The Tribune newspaper, receives little attention in his own household, be it from his wife, children or servants. After seeing a photograph of his daughter Phyllis, caught in a compromising situation, on the front page of The Daily Argus , Henry rushes into the office of Andy McDonald, the crooked publisher of Argus , and threatens to kill the newspaperman if he publishes another scandalous story about his family. Later, when ex-convict "Slippery" Joe Clary reveals that he overheard Henry's threat, Henry insinuates that McDonald secretly testified against Clary and even dated his girl friend while Clary was in San Quentin. Upon the suggestion of his chauffeur, Mike Hogan, Henry then decides to take a long-overdue vacation from both his work and family. In the meantime, Clary kills McDonald and dumps his body in Henry's car. Clary then attempts to retrieve a confession he signed for an earlier murder from McDonald's safe, but realizes that it is still on the dead newspaperman's body. Upon arriving at his hunting lodge, Henry finds the dead body inside his trunk, and, fearful of being accused of the murder, decides to dispose of the body. Before he can do so, however, Mike discovers the body and moves it into the house. The two are then forced to hide the body from numerous parties, including Desmond, the caretaker; Fritzie, Desmond's dog; and Jimmy Trigg, the local policeman. Clary soon arrives at the lodge and begins hunting for the body as well. Meanwhile, Henry's wife Alice finally notices his absense, and learning of his threat against the missing McDonald, heads up to the lodge to be with her husband. They are soon joined by their son James, Phyllis, and Jeffry Dodd, Phyllis' boyfriend and a reporter for The Daily Argus . Though the body is repeatedly discovered by different people, Henry alway has Mike move it, then convinces the person who found it that it was never there. Later, Trigg locates McDonald's car hidden in the woods and arrests Henry on suspicion of murder. James falsely confesses to the murder, and when he offers to show Trigg where the body is, Trigg captures Clary. With his confession found on McDonald's body, Clary admits all. Henry is then cleared of all charges and his family promises to pay more attention to him. The next morning, however, Henry finds himself alone at breakfast, as usual.

LUFKIN - Finding the piece of debris that might give clues to why the space shuttle Columbia broke apart on re-entry has been described by one NASA official as like "looking for a needle in a haystack."
Monday, the haystack got bigger.
While lawmen and volunteers in several East Texas counties were beating the piney woods and lake shores for more remnants of Columbia, the size of the "debris field" was enlarged to take in a portion of West Texas and a longer stretch of Louisiana.
Authorities did report a major find Monday. A man found the shuttle's nose cone buried about six feet in the ground on his land just outside the town of Hemphill. The cone was said to be in good shape and searchers planned to excavate it today.
Most of the significant debris and body parts apparently have been found between Nacogdoches and the Sabine River, but some fragments may be found as far east as the New Orleans suburbs and west of the point over Dallas-Fort Worth where the shuttle began to disintegrate.
