I was thinking this morning or last night about all that commotion in the Ironman community a few years ago about people racing under other people's name. That would seem to tie in with my theory about Tom Warren and Tom Watson. They are probably real people, but I think they know I was there. Not exactly clear on this, but it means something. I suspect that people were all talking about something along these lines and that produced the buzz about the "phantom" competitors.

The Gipper's disciples can't orchestrate history
Now, this is "Must-See TV."
I mean, I had no intention of watching CBS' Ronald Reagan miniseries. But given the furor raised by the Republican Party and assorted conservative pundits over what they perceive as a hatchet job on the former president, I don't see how I can afford to miss it.
This week, CBS gave in to the pressure and announced that it had pulled "The Reagans" from its November schedule. The movie has instead been shipped off to the Showtime cable network, which is expected to run it sometime next year.
The Republican faithful are counting that as only a partial victory. They're pleased the show won't be run on a major broadcast network. They'd prefer it not be run at all.
Mind you, they haven't actually seen the movie. Their antipathy is based on a number of other factors, including the fact that Reagan is portrayed by James Brolin, husband of the uber-liberal herself, Barbra Streisand. Then there are the script excerpts published by The New York Times, particularly one that portrays Reagan as lacking in compassion for gay people dying of a then-new disease called AIDS.
Yet, as everyone knows, the Reagan administration stood silent on the sidelines in the early years of that plague. Reagan may never have said the words the script reportedly puts into his mouth — "They that live in sin shall die in sin" — but the sentiment was certainly there. That's an unalterable element of his legacy.
Which is ultimately what this argument is about, the battle for Reagan's legacy. Granted, some liberal observers have framed it as an issue of principle, accusing the network of cowardice, but that argument is specious. If CBS were to pull a flattering portrayal of George Wallace in the face of black complaints, those same critics would applaud it for doing the right thing.
The point being that one person's corporate cowardice is another's corporate integrity.
So it's not upon some air castle of principle that my beef with the Gipper's minions rests, but rather, upon a specific complaint. I'm sick of their transparent attempts to hijack history.
Ronald Reagan, they would want you to know, won the Cold War and returned to the nation a buoyant optimism it had lost after years of Nixon lies and Carter malaise. Which is true enough. But he also slept through the AIDS crisis, saddled us with crippling budget deficits and presided over the Iran-contra affair.
How will those things balance each other in the final accounting? What will history's verdict be on Reagan's presidency? That's rather the point, isn't it? The question is still being answered, a process of which this movie is a part.
Except that the Reaganites refuse to wait. For disciples of a man who believed so deeply in the free market, they seem remarkably unwilling to let the marketplace of ideas do its job.
It's not just that they defend Reagan from criticism, but that they seek to pre-empt it altogether. The Republican National Committee even had the audacity to write CBS requesting that a panel of Reagan friends be allowed to edit the movie. Not to mention the campaign to put Reagan on Mount Rushmore, slap his face on the $10 bill and make every county in the country name a building in his honor.
I can think of no other president whose followers have so desperately sought to strong-arm history. Their refusal to let it do its work is unseemly at best. At worst, it projects the opposite of confidence and does to Reagan what his harshest critics never could. It makes him small.
Reagan's partisans should make their best case and let the chips fall. Instead, they behave like Soviet functionaries seeking to orchestrate a favorable consensus.
And like the Soviets, they fail to grasp the obvious truth. An orchestrated consensus is no consensus at all.

Network defends 'Reagans' series as air date nears

In the continuing offscreen saga that is CBS'-turned-Showtime's "The Reagans," the cable network yesterday publicly defended the movie in a teleconference for the nation's TV critics and said it would make tapes available Saturday for last-minute review.
"The Reagans," conceived as a two-part miniseries for CBS, will air commercial-free Sunday on sister cable channel Showtime, which is also owned by Viacom.
The Seattle Times plans to review the movie in Sunday's paper.
Producers yesterday for the first time addressed the political controversy surrounding the film, which was pulled from CBS on Nov. 4. Leslie Moonves, chairman of CBS, has insisted that he dropped "The Reagans" because it was unbalanced, and not because of protests and threatened boycotts from conservatives and Reagan fans.
What viewers will see Sunday is in keeping with the original vision of the film's creators, producers said.
"It's basically the movie we had hoped to air on CBS," said Craig Zadan, part of a team of producers that was also behind the Oscar-winning "Chicago."
Producers said they had been taken aback by the swift and controversial reaction to a film that few people have seen. That was part of the reason it was rushed into an earlier air date.
"It makes sense to put it out there and then discuss it," said Robert Greenblatt, Showtime's entertainment president. "We don't really feel that it needs to be defended that rigorously. It didn't seem that necessary for us to rush to its defense."
Reagan is portrayed as "deeply religious" but not homophobic, producers said, pointing out that the Reagans were the only presidential couple to have a same-sex couple stay as overnight guests in the Lincoln Bedroom.
"I think anybody who sees this movie will come away with positive feelings about both of them and their relationship, and that's the heart of the movie," said director Robert Ackerman. "None of us went into this with a political agenda. Our agenda is about finding stories we think are interesting."
Actor James Brolin, who portrays Reagan in the movie, addressed allegations that his famously liberal wife, Barbra Streisand, is further proof that the film was made with an anti-Reagan bent.
"She never did read it. She spent four hours, total, on the set. That was the sum of her involvement," Brolin said. "They're constantly inventing things about her. This was just another. I wasn't surprised."

Nancy character consumes 'Reagans' TV movie

It is perhaps unfair to judge "The Reagans," the TV movie that airs on Showtime tonight, on historical accuracy. It's television, after all.
Much of the controversy leading up to CBS shunting the show off to its cable sister with the lower standards seemed to me exaggerated on both sides. A docudrama should by now be an oxymoronic warning light that would let even the casual viewer know that all before them is not true.
But "The Reagans" fails by the standards set by the show's producers and creative team.
Even before the criticism of made-up dialogue and selective memory (the writer's, not Reagan's) the show was touted as a love story between Ronald and Nancy Reagan. That story line, director Robert Ackerman told reporters last week, would leave viewers "with positive feelings about both of them and their relationship, and that's the heart of the movie."
There's little heart in the movie, though.
Nancy is portrayed by Judy Davis as cold and manipulative and having more pity than love for Reagan as played by James Brolin. He comes off as kindhearted but doddering. (Think President Forrest Gump.) And that's just in the first 30 seconds.
After that opening scene that foreshadows the darkest days of the Iran-contra scandal, the movie flashes back to the day Reagan met his future second wife, actress Nancy Davis. Even there, Nancy is portrayed as scheming and underhanded as she persuades an intermediary to arrange a date for her with Reagan, then a fading movie star.
Nancy Reagan is shown popping pills, shaking her daughter violently, turning a cold shoulder to Ronald Reagan's two children from his first marriage, and plotting with businessmen and political handlers about how best to advance Reagan's political career.
It is much more the Nancy Reagan Story than "The Reagans."
In case the point is missed, Reagan tells his wife after a rare disagreement, "It's up to you Nancy Pants, you're running the show."
Not alone, though. From the start there are scrums of guys in suits whispering, casting glances and rolling their eyes as they plot how to turn Reagan from an avuncular movie and TV star into a crusading, conservative politician. When Nancy tells an adviser that Reagan won't run for governor of California because "he likes his life the way it is," the man asks her, "Yeah, but do you?"
The show is worth watching for the camp value of Davis' Nancy in full Mommie Dearest mode, as well as some appropriately slimy performances by the cadre of manipulators who aid her. Brolin plays Reagan too much like a "Saturday Night Live" sketch to ever find him believable.
The show fails even to portray the time span of Reagan's rise. The 1960s particularly come off as broadly drawn with students looking cartoonish, though that's probably how Reagan himself saw them.
CBS dumped the program after complaints from Reagan family members and supporters that it was biased and inaccurate. One of the most controversial lines was dropped in a final editing.
Originally, Reagan was to say a line about the AIDS epidemic the screenwriter said she invented: "They that live in sin shall die in sin."
In the program, Reagan instead says nothing at all when Nancy — in her one caring moment — urges him to do something about the epidemic.
Reagan is reported to have said something similar to what the writer crafted, saying, "Maybe the Lord brought down this plague" because "illicit sex is against the Ten Commandments."
This is where worrying too much about mixing a bit of fiction in historical entertainment is tricky. That quote came from a Reagan biography by Edmund Morris, a "biography" in which the prominent historian created a character based on himself who was inserted into Reagan's life story.
If that happens in the history books, who should worry that a TV program takes some liberties?
That said, it seems a shame that so much time could be spent convincing viewers of Nancy's inherent evilness when discussion of what happened to the economy under Reagan, as one example, was relegated to a note on the screen before the closing credits.
There are only hints in "The Reagans" that Ronald Reagan had political convictions. After an early speech that touched on politics, someone asked Reagan who wrote it for him.
"The words are mine. So are the convictions," Reagan says. And as he struggles with a decision to switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, he says, "The Democrats changed, not me."
The lone time the president is shown balking at the first lady's bullying, you want to cheer for him and hope it is the program's Rocky moment that'll find him asserting himself. But mostly, Reagan is seen as malleable and affable.
Reagan comes to the forefront of the program really only toward the end when the script hints that the first signs of the Alzheimer's disease that now plagues him were showing up.
In the end, it matters little whether the details are accurate. "The Reagans" gives short shrift to accomplishments and dwells on the negatives, primarily the travails of the dysfunctional first family — right down to their footwear. At Reagan's inaugural, his children are desperate for a drink and there's some question if Patty is high. Nancy stays in character, though, criticizing how they all look and lecturing Patty that in the White House, "We will not wear clogs."

THE FIRST ANNUAL MEETING
April 15, 1962
The first annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology was held in the Chevy Chase Room of the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel in Atlantic City on April 15,1962. Dr. Harold C. Hodge, President, opened the meeting by saying this was indeed an historic moment since the Society was formed a little more than a year ago in Washington, D.C. He pointed out that up to now there was no one to speak for toxicology and forming the Society would draw together those who have a common interest in toxicology. The criteria for membership would be based primarily on original research publications. The Society would encourage universities to recognize toxicology as a scientific discipline and assist in developing educational standards for the training of toxicologists.

Criticism for the memoir, titled "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan," also continued to erupt Tuesday from the political side as former President George Bush denied Morris' claim that he and his wife were unwelcome "upstairs" in the Reagan White House when he was vice president.
